Almost There

August 20th, 2008 - 3:49pm by Elvis Dumervil

It’s great to be done with training camp and get into our regular season schedule. You’ve got more down time to get your body healed back up. You can eat more and get your weight back to where you want it — get your body right. It’s a great because the real deal is about to start, and that’s what it’s all about. I got through camp healthy, so I thank God about that.

It’s all progressed great. You’ve got guys, your teammates, that you go through blood and sweat with in the offseason. I’ve seen the committment that most people don’t see. You’re out there everyday in the offseason, working out. Now when you go out there in the game and see guys producing, it’s a good feeling. We’re excited. The coaches are excited. We’re happy with our packages and our scheme. I think the personnel is right where it should be. We’ve still got competition going. It’s a great deal, and I’m excited about that.

I’m approaching this game against the Packers like it’s a regular season game because next week in that last game, we, the starters, won’t really dress for it. This is my last deal, as far as the preseason, to tune everything up. I’m going out there to give it all I’ve got.

And now on to some of your questions since I couldn’t last week.

West Coast: I’m more excited this year because we’ve got a couple of guys now that have all played together, so we have that experience. The second-year guys have had another year to get better and develop. This scheme is all about stopping the run. You know I’m a guy who loves to rush the passer, but if you can’t stop the run, you never get a chance to rush the quarterback. Coaches always say you’ve got to earn the right to rush the passer. I think as far as this year we’ll get more pass rush opportunities because we’re going to stop the run.

To everyone who wanted me to get a sack against the Cowboys: With that sack, it was great coverage by our guys first and foremost. The quarterback was standing back there for a while because of that. I kind of got off around the corner and just kept pushing. The quarterback had a couple resets, and I was able to get to him. That was a great deal. It felt good.

Dave888259: I appreciate the support man. Thanks for getting that jersey. I’d love to look up and see a bunch of #92s in the stands. Most of the time, the D-line doesn’t get any love, as far as jersey sales. That’s a good deal. I’ll definitely play my part and make you proud to wear the jersey.

To the several people who asked about how Clady has looked: He’s great. For years to come, he’s going to be one of those left tackles that continues to get in the Pro Bowl. I have a lot of expectations for him. He came in, and I think he handled the situation very well, to come in as a starter. He’s poised. He doesn’t get rattled. He’s coachable. He’s athletic. He has a lot of upside. I expect him to be great for years to come.

rodsmithrules: You see those training camp fights and things happen all over, but you just don’t see them happen here. First, the guys here, we’re tight as friends. We’re more than just teammates. We’re a brotherhood. Guys are really close off the field. At the same time, you can get hot in situations. Competitions arise and in the heat of the moment, things can get crazy. But it starts with our Head Coach. Shanahan has zero tolerance for that. Guys know they have to conduct themselves well. This is a first class organization, and I think that carries out onto the field. It’s a mindset. You have to be prepared, and Shanahan always prepares us for those types of situations.

See you next week

You guys looked really really good against the Cowboys!! I cannot wait for the regular season to start either!!

Have you guys heard anything about Brandon Marshall’s suspension appeal? Is it going to get bumped down to 2 games?

I’m soooooo glad we have a team that has great chemistry and truly cares for one another. What a tremendous quality to have. :)

    Hey,
Good to hear the team is getting along well, and it always helps get some W’s. Last week was great and I look forward to watchin the Denver Defense come September 7th vs the Raiders. I havent heard any thing bout Marshall but the Broncos are tryin to keep the media from getting too involed so B-Marsh will probaly take the classes and the two games and will be on the field week 3.

It’s great to see you keeping us updated Elvis. We all know you’re probably very busy as it is so I for one am very grateful you take the time to communicate with all us fans.

Great sack on Johnson by the way. Keep ‘em coming. I know you will.

Also some people seem to think you are not good against the run. Do what you do best and prove all of your doubters wrong, I know you are more than capable of being a complete DE. Best of luck and thanks again.

Its always good to get the W against the Cowgirls. hey Elvis, are there any matchups against a certain offensive lineman you are looking forward too this season? Good Luck against Brett the Jet’s former team.

Thanks for the answer! I look forward to the Denver D whoopin’ up on the Packers on Friday! Keep on rockin’!

    Yo Doom,

You guys were great against the boy’s last week the team really looks like they are starting to come together! I know it is only the preseason but I but some of the young players are really starting to step up! Not to mention we will be even better with the bailey boys getting healthy!!
Once again I really appreciate you writing and keeping us up to date!

Oh yeah sorry to bug you with so many questions but I have watched P. Hills play quite a bit in college…. Do you think he still has a chance to start- I get the feeling he could be a great H-back type player like Chris Cooley (skins) or maybe even Dallas Clark (colts)!! What do you think?

  8. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Keep it up, Elvis, that’s all I’ve got to say. The defensive line is the key to the Broncos being an exceptionally successful team this season. The camaraderie appears to be at an optimum level and it’s nice that this squad really looks out for one another. I have a feeling that we can be 11-5 this season. Obviously, Elivs, your stellar play is a key ingredient in my assertion.

    DOOM!
Hey I think the nickname is starting to take. While I didn’t hear it in the stadium on your sack, people are starting to use it on the boards and newspaper articles. I am pushing to make it a tradition like In-Com-Plete! My next step is to see if I can get the new staduim announcer (Alan Roach I think) to incorporate the DOOOOOOOOOOOM! when you do your thing.

When the cowboys’ FB Darryl Johnston used to carry the ball the Dallas fans would chant Moooose. I think it would be sweet if we could get 76,000 plus on board with this thing.

Tear it up big guy, and thanks for taking the time to chat with us. It means a lot to us working-class Broncomaniacs!

    Elvis,

First off, thanks for giving us Bronco Fans someone we can really brag about on our D-Line. It’s been awhile with injuries and bad luck for us. You are the real deal, when I heard of your accolades in Louisville I knew we had someone special that not to many people knew about. But I told my buddies about you before you were starting. I’m in the tough city of Los Angeles. I’ve been a Bronco fan all my life. I’m surrounded by Charger and Raider fans and I’m keeping it real for the Broncos out here. My question to you is. This year after you get a sack, could you bring back the Mile High Salute!? When Terrell used to do that after a Touchdown, it was good energy for the whole team. We need to get the whole team back on that energy, we won Super Bowls with that salute. Also, can you help the rest of the D-Line realize their potential? Mike Shanahan has you all there for a reason. Make Jarvis step up this year, he has too much talent to not be competing with you for sacks this year. And Crowder, well he is 1st round talent that only went 3rd round for his character. But something I love about the Shanahan and the Broncos is the character the organization has. My good friend got drafted to the 49ers about three years ago. I saw how the 49ers just play way too much. They don’t take football seriously, it were as if they were fine with losing. But the Broncos seem to know that it’s time to get serious. We need to win Super Bowls before it’s time to play. Don’t get me wrong, have fun…..but we need to take care of business. You’re one of my favorite guys to root for, keep up the great work. I wanna see you as the AFC if not the NFL sack leader. If you do that we will be winning a lot of games. Good luck, and stay healthy.

    Elvis,

Congrats again on the Cowboys game. It was great to see the team play well on both sides of the ball. I think that the D-line is very underrated and you guys will turn some heads this year!

It is really good to hear that you guys are a tight group off the field. I’ve always thought that a great team chemistry will help you be very successful. If you are friends off the field, than you will definitely go to battle for your brothers on the field.

Good luck against the Packers and I’m looking forward to that Monday night opener against those punks from Oakland.

    Cool,
It’s going to be a Cardinal reunion for you against the Pack. Try not to crush Brohm when you get to him… but please feel free to take out your aggression against Aaron Rogers. D line guys may not have huge jersey sales #s, but there are a lot of 92 jerseys here in Louisville… although if I show up to a Bronco game in a 58 Cardinal jersey you had better get in Wesley Woodyard and Marlon McCree’s faces and remind them that UK sucks.
    Go Cards
    Go Broncos

    All hail the Sack King!

  15. West Coast says:

Doom…Thanks for the reply. I am so pumped right now I cant wait till September. I keep rewatching the Cowboy game over and over and am impreesed with how our run D is shaping up. Last night my wife asked why I keep watching it over and over and I told her I had to evaluate our players. She thinks Im freakin nuts. They just do not understand!…….West Coast

  16. IA_broncosfan53 says:

Doom, I was so excited to see ya get your first of many sacks this year in the Cowboys game. It looks like the line in the first two games are playing together more than several points last season. As Denwu said, I cant wait to be able to brag about the defensive line this season.

Im going to try and find a 92 jersey online somewhere to wear to the kansas city game and maybe ya will spot it in the stands before the game. Good luck tomorrow!

  17. HOGblog says:

Hey guys, as long as your mentioning former Kentucky players, (Woodyard, McCree) YOU better not forget about D-Rob! He was a UK Wildcat as well. And the #4 pick in the 1st round. Show’em all some love!

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM! You Rock dude! I loved your comment as to the only way for you to get yours, is to stop the run! I know with the new scheme, commitment, and high expectations, we wont endure another “Freakish” year like last year. Hey, it’s over. We’re moving to 08…Kick A** Doom!

  18. I agree… GO CARDS!

  19. 24zone says:

    Great Job Elvis!!!

Film Analysis(wish I had coaches tape)

    O-Line
Kuper can accelerate well, and is playing well with only one hand. However,When pass blocking, his feet go quiet, and gets left behind. Head down and high pad level at times.
Harris and Clady are doing a great job, but will have their rookie mistakes, but they look like athletic bookends for a long time!
Hamilton looked rusty, hes better than that. I think the same with Weigman.

Cutler helps his O-Line a ton when he makes his reads and gets the ball out quickly, A+ grade for him.

Scheffler and Nate Jackson-are we getting better in the blocking department?

    D-Line
I think Thomas and Robertson will do well. To me it looked like Thomas needs to learn double team skills.

Engleberger is a hard worker/character guy, but my lord, get some pash rush moves please!!! Effort alone makes plays sometimes, but use some skill!! I did not see any basic swim or rip or anything!! If you are not a high quality bull rusher, develop other skills please.

The first thing I notice in the secondary was that Bly was not locked up with T.O. This tells me something…I think Fox did a nice job, and I would call it a battle for starter with Bly and Fox.

If the front four doesn’t get a pass rush, blitz D.J.! Its great having him in coverage and running down plays, but he proved last year that he can bang inside and play in the middle. I havent seen enough of Niko to make a grade, seemed to be in decent position enough.

Having Stokely and Royal is a huge help for the Offense.

    Stay Healthy!!

24 zone we can watch all the highlight videos on nfl.com we dont care what you think. This is about DOOM here the guys a beast look to see him getting the majority of sacks in the league this year

    Elvis Dumervil=NFL Sack Leader

God Bless and im hoping for a great year from the defense

  22. meisner says:

also, what do you think of Robertson so far? and how much do you think he will contribute this season?

  23. Opie2k5 says:

I have been a huge fan of yours since you been in college. Me being from Louisville, you were always a bright spot on our defence. You have tons of love back here and just wanted to wish you the best of luck for you.

  24. tat2matt says:

Hey Doom, had you on my fantasy team last year and you did me well, so I’ll have you there again this year (although I’ll have to take you earlier because you’re not a secret anymore). So no pressure or anything, but I need about 100 tackles and 32 sacks from you this year. Thanks in advance.

  25. Fred the Bunny says:

Hey, Elvis knows all about Brohm, lol.

    I’ve gone to practices.

He can cut through a block like a knife.
Quick as hell off the snap….

But Elvis will tell you…he loves him some Freeney.
And I have a feeling if he keeps it up, he’ll outshine
    my Colts player.

    Go Cards!

  26. Dave888259 says:

    Dr. Doom,
Thanks for the reply. And to fulfill your dream of a stadium full of 92’s… Just keep doing what you’re doing, and it’ll come.

  27. Dave888259 says:

Excellent sack last night, Doom. I love watching you play. And I was real glad to see Marcus Thomas involved on that play too. I’ve been saying since we drafted him that he could be one of the main keys to this defense becoming great again, and it’s nice to have my faith in him rewarded from time to time. Sorry to hear about the finger, hopefully it’s nothing serious. At least you get to take the next game off, let your body get totally healthy before you welcome Jamarcus Russell to the role of a full-time NFL starter… I’m sure you’ll teach him some valuable lessons. ;)

  28. broncos14441 says:

Does any1 have the new madden? Well, if you havn’t, Dumervil is 90 overall. Keep making big plays Doom!

Hey Elvis D. I’m currently deployed to Iraq and I just realized we have a system here known as the LVIS - Large Vehicle Inspection System - which has a painting of Elvis P on it. However, when you all take down the AFC and head to the Superbowl, I’m going to see if I can get them to paint a picture of you up there taking down a Q-back!! Since I’ll miss seeing your season, I hope you have a great one. I’ll be reading about your stats in the Stars & Stripes. Give a shout out to all the USAF people over here in Iraq if you get a chance…

  31. Dumervil 09 says:

Good luck for when you and the bronco play the Cardinals, it sould be easy if you and the D-Line get after Matt Leinart and Kurt Warner
