New Year, New Season

Season’s over and the year’s over also.

It’s been an eventful year for us. Ups and downs and a lot of challenges. We obviously didn’t get to where we were expected to go. Didn’t fulfill all of our goals and maximize our talent this year. I think this is a time right now right after the season to reflect on our own individual performances and performance as a team.

That being said, I personally recognize that there’s things that I need to work on going into next season. It’s important to be really critical of yourselves right now when things haven’t gone well.

On a positive note, we won our last game against a very good team who was really one of the top running teams in the league — the top running team — and we were able to answer the call and control their running attack and for the most part control their passing attack and play solid defense and our offense scored enough points to win.

Unfortunately it had to go into overtime, but it’s kind of been the theme of our season. Nothing has been easy for us this year. This win is also a little frustrating because like a lot of our other wins, we played really well. We played really well against some playoff teams and some really good teams, which makes it really frustrating to look back on the games that we lost to teams that aren’t playoff teams and the games that we gave away and those sorts of things.

It’s really tough to look back on, but you can’t look back because you can’t change the past. This is a time to be critical of yourselves and focus on what you need to get better on. This is going to be a difficult next couple of weeks I’m sure, or a difficult offseason, because whenever things don’t go well, there’s always a lot of changes made or at least some changes made. We have some faces that won’t be around here next year because there always are some people that are gone. Hopefully I’m one of the faces that’s still here, but you never know.

Tonight is New Year’s, which is the anniversary of when Darrent got killed, so that’ll be difficult for me to deal with. I think I’ll take a trip over to the Boys & Girls Club and hang out with them at some point today and tomorrow. I hope everybody learned from last year and is extra safe and careful in whatever way they try to celebrate the New Year.

I’m disappointed we didn’t make the playoffs but I’m excited about this offseason. Get a chance to get away and enjoy myself and friends and family as much as possible until it’s time to get back to work. It comes around before you know it. Time really flies, especially in this league.

I feel like I just got here and I just had my first start in Jacksonville, but I’m already going into Year Four. I’m a legitimate vet now. I can’t consider myself a young guy any more. I’ll be 25 in March which is five years to 30 which is halfway to 60. I’m pretty old and the time goes pretty fast. I can’t say I’m upset about it though.

Being a rookie is a lot more difficult than being a vet. In my rookie season, I had a lot of challenges and a lot of pressure put on me and I was able to step up and make some plays and make a little name for myself as a talented young player. Unfortunately, this past season, I don’t feel like I had as many opportunities, but you’ve got to make the best of the ones that you’ve been given, so I’ve been a little disappointed in myself for not making the best of the opportunities that I was given this year.

I don’t know, I guess that it’s time to refocus and work on the things that I personally need to work on so I can be ready for next year and have the best season I’ve ever had which will hopefully propel our team to have one of the best seasons that we’ve ever had.

I don’t think I’m going to watch the playoffs. I’m not a big football fan to be honest with you. I never really watch that much football. It’s my job. I wonder if detectives watch Law and Order. It’s hard for me to really get into too much football. I just get angry, especially around playoff time. I just get angry because I’m not there. Like I’ve said before, I get annoyed at the people who call the game because they have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about — ever. It’s probably the same feeling for lawyers and detectives watching Law and Order when they do that show. I’m sure it’s nothing like that in real life. People watching CSI who are actual forensic detectives or whatever that is. The actual forensic scientists or whatever they are probably have a hard time watching CSI because I’m sure that’s pretty phony.

I have a hard time watching playoff football because I get angry and listening to the people calling the game have no idea what they’re talking about which makes me even more angry, and then I’m not there so I’m upset about being home watching it like a regular guy. So yeah, it’s hard for me to watch the playoffs. SportsCenter doesn’t come on much at my house. I don’t watch too much ESPN. I’m a Broncos fan only.

I’ve got a lot of things planned this offseason, one of which is opening the Darrent Williams Teen Center in March. I’ve got NFLPA meetings also in March and I’m going to try to take a few vacations and get out of the country and get myself a little culture. Should be fun. I’m looking forward to it. I’ll try to keep in contact with some of my close friends on the team and hopefully we can hang out together.

I really do love the defensive backs and the people I’ve gotten to know and I’m going to miss the ones who won’t be back next year. Hopefully I’m not one of the ones that they’re talking about next year about how much they miss Fox. Hopefully Fox is still here.

I don’t know 100 percent what the plan is for the blog in the future. I’m definitely going to continue to do it, but I’m going to take a couple weeks off and drop some surprise blogs on you guys throughout the course of the offseason. So stay on DenverBroncos.com, take a look at mine and the rest of the blogs and keep up on our Broncos news.

All ready!

Fox, good season, and hopefully you DO stay on the team. Youre great for the team as a player and a person. And maybe you’ll get more opportunities to make plays next year. Have a good offseason, keep in touch with us with the blog, its real good.

p.s. How is a DB supposed to cover a WR when the QB has time every throw, although i think our young talent will develope nicely. Even champ and dre got thrown on because the QB’s had time to pick apart you guys. Keep the chin up. Oh yeah, and dont worry about LT, maybe if he didnt get to the secondary every run you might not have to make tackles. Not your fault. Have a good offseason, RIP Darrent Williams

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you Fox. Thanks so much for taking the time from your busy schedule to drop us a line here at denverbroncos.com. We definitely appreciate it. We hope that your offseason is a success.

As a Bronco fan for the last 28 years, this has been one of the most frustrating for me. Not because I thought we should win the superbowl… but because I wanted a strong season to build upon for next year. Instead, we are left wondering… What the heck is wrong? Our QB improved and seems efficient. Our wide receivers did well. Our RB’s gained yardage. But with that, we didn’t put up points like we should have. Instead, we got blown out of a couple of games, barely won some close ones, and won a few. I’d like to say “That’s the NFL”… but then one looks at the Patriots and says “What are they doing that nobody else can?”

    Maybe it’s the coaches?

Just as you say it’s time in the offseason for everyone in the coaching staff as well to look at themselves and say what could we do to be better?

Maybe the days of the West Coast Offense are gone. Seems like the Patriots and Colts style of football is working. Defenses are just too fast for the dink and dunk style….

Whatever it is, I hope next year is better than this year. Whatever happens and transpires. Thanks, Take care and Best Wishes.

Fox, man, I’m glad that you realize that you struggled this year and you’re going to work on getting better, you know, everyone has down years, the thing is, who rebounds and has good one’s in years following that? That’s what makes a player, and I know you have it in you.

When you said you’d be going into year 4 next year, I couldn’t believe it, then I realized, wow, he’s right. That struck me hard, time flies man, like you said, and before you know it, you’re going to be ready to retire, so wins or losses, you have to enjoy what you do right now, because it’s an opportunity that only the best get to experience.

Keep your head on straight, stay motivated, work hard, and do your best, that’s all you can do to this point. You’re honestly one of my favorite players on this team because you’re so down-to-earth and you are talented and have a chance to shine. Whether it’s as that nickel corner that we grew up to love in the 2005 season, or the safety/corner tweener that struggled this past year, you’re still going to be my boy because of your attitude and outlook.

    Stay up man.

Good luck during the off season Fox, I hope you make a decision thats best for you and your family. The team needs your heart back on the field next year. Come out fighting no matter where 08 lands you!!!

  6. shelbo bronco Says:

i think they should trade you for somebody who can tackle and cover without holding the reciever.

  7. bronx2729 Says:

Thanks Fox for the blogs, community work, and your play on the field. It’s selfish, but I’d like to see you stay in Denver eventhough I know you could start on most teams and I wouldn’t I blame you for leaving to start on another team. Think Shelbo is just an upset fan. I think its great and shows what a great guy you are by continuing D-Wills cummunity work and any team would be lucky to have you play for them and have you in thier community. I wish Javon Walker was more like you. I don’t understand that guy, at least not right now. This offseason should be interesting for you and the Broncos. I look forward to seeing how it pans out for you and the Broncos and I look forward for a great young team next year!

  8. precisiontint Says:

    Fox,

Enjoy the offseason. If you can. It is hard for me and I’m just a fanatic! I am glad you are a Bronco and I look forward to seeing you in uniform for training camp. A Bronco uniform.

It is always good to know that you are always looking to become better.
With Champ and Lynch back there, you have had good teachers.

Just remember that if you do what you always do, then you get what you always get. Try some different things. Switch it up a little. Find out what the greats have done and add that in to what you always do. I am sure you do these things already.

Thank you for your dedication to Broncos Country. All Ready!

  9. BLWWbroncos Says:

    Foxy,
Great end to a shaky season. Im not going to lie though I got a little nervous when we went into OT but the defense pulled it out and thats what we need. I know New Years isnt the best time for alot of Broncos fans and players but I hope you got a little celebration in, and I just want to say thanks for all you do in the community and trying to keep D-Wills spirit alive.

Well I hope you have a great off season and have fun on getting you some culture haha, I think thats something we all should do at least once in our lives. I hope you come back next year as a Bronco I would be heartbroken if you didnt, you do so much for the Denver community and I dont think we could thank you enough for putting this blog up so we know whats going on in your head.

    Heres to next season!
    Love ya,

    Hey Fox,

    Happy New Beginnings!!

What a year, huh? I’m so glad that I got to know you off the field through your blogs. Like I’ve always said, your are such an awesome guy and we here in Broncos country love us some Foxworth! (that sounded so country…lol)

Seriously, though, I can’t help but feel a little sad knowing that you may or may not be with the team next year. I know you will make the best decision for you and yours, but we sure would like to see you back. I see great potential in you, Fox. Just this year I’ve seen you grow. You’ve been such a pleasure to watch. Especially in them blue pants with the orange stripe down the side. Mm!

Wait. Let me stop. Bring it back.

Thank you so much for all you’ve done for the team as well as the community. We are looking forward to the opening of the Darrent Williams Teen Center and you better believe I will do all I can to make that a continued success.

God Bless you, Fox. Enjoy your time off, ok?

Wow, Fox living in Virginia and being a UVA fan, I covered you then, and remember watching a Maryland, and Virginia game and the announcer saying what a bright young man you are and how much of a special player you were going to be on Sunday’s. He was righ tbut what amazes me is your personality. You seem to care about the team and fans more than yourself. Keep this up as you will be a foundation for this team to grow on. Also, I thinbk us fans would like to see more team celebrations and excitement coming from our team when we make plays. And Fox, do us a favor, talk to the team about bringing back the mile high salute. There is some kind of majic with it including two super bowl wins. I think the fans at the games will explode if you all bring that back out. Thanks and good luck in the offseason.

  12. cornersfan Says:

Thanks for bringing us this blog every week! Its been great reading it and getting to know you more than by just your skills on the field. I hope you have a super offseason. I’ll look forward to your blogs and I’ll try not to miss one. They were the highlight of the football week, except for the games of course. Thanks for the finale on Sunday! I had a blast with my mom while we were there. That was actually the 1st Broncos win I’ve seen live :) but hey, I’m 9-0 at Denver sporting events in ‘07 so maybe I should’ve tried to make more Broncos games :) Take it easy and get some rest because all of us in Broncos Country are looking for some domination in ‘08 after all this talk you’ve put up :) Love ya!

  14. Chemaster Says:

Thanks for the insight from a players perspective - it reminds every fan, that you are not machines, who have to function perfectly in order to be of value. We are often to fast to call for the head of and individual for one mediocre performance.
Enjoy the offseason. I love to hear your plans for the Darrent Williams Youth Center. I wish you fun catching up on culture. I myself enjoy arts and architecture a lot.
You don’t explicitely include efforts to stay in shape - is this too trivial to mention? I do suspect, that some of the injuries, especially in training camp, are due to lazy offseasons. We often read about linemen returning overweight to training camp, but never about receivers or DB’s being slower, probably because weight is more obvious. Can you comment on your workout regimen while officially on vacation? Thanks!

  15. Dekreybroncofan Says:

    Hey Fox,
I do really hope youare here next year too, but as you know I dont think thats possible. I am also really pulling for Javon, but if he dosent want to be here thats his own thing… Well have a fun offseason, and I hope New Years wasnt to hard because of D-Will

  16. JMB Says:

    Hey D-Fox,

    You are a true BRONCO!!!

A true hero off and on the field.

I think the NFL announcers are a joke as well. I just mute the TV and throw on 850KOA….

Good luck this off season and I hope to see you in a DB uniform next season.

    Much Love!

  17. imready Says:

happy new year fox! i wouldn’t worry too much about the broncos dealing or dumping you, with your versatility and talent i don’t think you’ll be going anywhere.
i agree with you 100% about the guys calling the game, they don’t know what they’re talking about. guess that what the mute button is for, isn’t it?
don’t get too much culture on vacation, we like you just the way you are! have fun, that’s why people take vacations!

  18. vraptor567 Says:

that was well said, but in retrospect the team really, really needs some help. The offense is on track, but the D is seriously lacking. I know we are all outsiders here so it’s hard to blame the players when the problem could just as easily be with the coaching staff, but clearly something will need to change to be the winning team (we all know the BRONCOS should be) next season. I know you will be part of the solution and hopefully next season will see you off to the pro bowl. See you next season

Hey man……I was not having a happy new year….I was thinking about Darrent non stop the whole week. In memory of D-Will I wore my D-Will rubber band(I wear it everyday) and my All Ready T-shirt. I said a prayer right at 12 and had a 27 second moment of silence with my bro and ken he is like a bro to me aswell. I hope to see you in Broncos colors the rest of your career.I am goin out to Colorado in July or August I hope I see you.I remember that J-Ville game can you ……of course you were the rookie of the week !!! What a game you had when D-Will and CHamp were sidelined with injuries.Once again I hope you stay you are my 2nd favorite player in the NFL and if you have to leave(PLEASE NO !!) you will still be my second favorite in the NFL. You always have me as a fan as does Javon. Best wishes to him. I hope he stays but he has to do what is best for him.I hope you keep the blog next year too. Thank you for having this blog it really is great to here from you off the field. Domonique Foxworth - a great player and an even better person.

Have a happy new year and thanks for doing the blog. I love reading it. Don’t say that your old because I’m only 5 years younger than you and that gets me to thinking that I’m old because in 11 years I will be 30 and halfway to 60. As far as a place to go to out of the country, how about Dubai, United Arab Emirates. That is a beautiful city. Have a good offseason.

  22. ramboskithefan Says:

i hope all the broncos dont put any mind in what sum of these fake fans say..cuz on the real the avg. fan probably dont even got a computer to send these messeges and know u for how u act on the field!!! your the man and people forget the year we almost made it to the superbowl…your rookie year….you and darrent were always making huge INT’s for us….this year Karl came on a lil stronger..and we got rid of Jeff….now its time for Champ, u , and karl to run this secondary…..much luv

Italy’s a nice place to go because it’s the land of my ancestors, so it’s special to me. Anyway, hopefully you remain with us, Fox. I would imagine that your versatility makes you invaluable to the current regime, but as you stated so eloquently, one never knows. Endure to the end and all will be well. I fully expect ‘08 to be a successful season and a return to our previous glory.

  24. ncheel2 Says:

    Hey Domonique
Greata season. Man life offers lots of ups and downs and this year the Broncos had that. There seem to be lots of areas that need improvement and offense, defense, special teams and coaching needs it.

One of things I like about your game is that you add lots to the team. THe fact there you’re a pure corner and played it well when in the game, played the nickle very well also, and even filled in as strong and free safety when needed, says a lot about your character and ability to help the team.

These nuckle heads of shelbo bronco and broncofan in the 831, are just losers who have never even played the game-like some of the tv personalities who attempt to call the game also. I bet these losers remind me of those losers who can’t even catch the ball at half-time games. Everyone has areas to improve on, yet losers talk down your game. Hey shelbo and bronco831, you ever played college fb, ever played in a bowl game, last time I checked I didn’t see your name on a nfl roster. I bet you’re losers at your job also-who evaluates you?

I’m a broncos fan forever, not a fare weather fan as many are. You being a young guy have alot to give to the game. We want you here for your play on and off the field, and if the broncos don’t see the potential, it is there lost. Most players can’t do as you did, having to understand and produce in three different positions. It was obvioius that Paymah who was drafter before you couldn’t handle it because if so, he would have been in the game early on. Man you got game and just keep it up. I wish you stay here in denver, but you got to go where is best for you and where your career can jet. Don’t worry about loser talk, there are lots of haters.

    Broncos f4ever

  25. BLWWbroncos Says:

One thing I think we should do is lobby and try to get the MNF announcers FIRED!!!! They are the worst of them all, they talk about one thing for too long even if it doesnt pretain to football I hate it! I usually mute it and listen to some music while they play. I remember the Monday Night game against Green Bay all they did was talk about Favre, it was horrible.

  26. FSUBronco Says:

    Domonique,

What’s up with Javon wanting out? I finally get a fellow Nole on the Broncos to cheer for, buy a jersey, and then he bounces 2 years into a five year deal? I guess if he doesn’t want to be here then no use keeping him, but I’d love to see him stay. I know Brandon had a HUGE year, and quite honestly IS our franchise receiver, but Javon should be reminded that Swann had Stallworth, Rice had Taylor, Irvin had Harper, oh and those three tandoms in Indy, Cincy, & St Louis aren’t half bad either. Wondering if you know if he’s for sure gone, or if he’s just frustrated.

Also, any news on your side of the ball as to who will replace Bates? I’d like to put in a word for Tampa’s DB’s coach Raheem Morris. I see rumors that Oakland is talking about firing Rob Ryan and bringing Morris in. I can’t see them firing Ryan for Morris, but we should bring on which ever guy they don’t.

  27. BLWWbroncos Says:

Im not 100% sure why Javon doesnt want to stay I think he should. He didnt really do anything this season because of his injuries so I dont know how he can come to this conclusion.

  28. rusty_ball Says:

Yes Dom, it was a rough season. You made a comment about looking ahead, yes look to what your improvments can be, you never quit trying to improve either in your professional or personal life, but look back also. History is one of the best learning tools. As to the future 5 years in, your butterflies are over. You have showed that you can learn and improve each season. The team as a whole, What went wrong? Only you, your team mates and coaching staff can answer that. I have my views, but I’m just a fan, not a coach, so I won’t even attempt to comment on that, I f I knew the answers I’d be a coach not a towboat Capt. You are in a very gifted position, you have a team that has a lot going for it. Team mates that act and project themselves as leaders and teachers. I see very little personel “EGO” problems with the team, and the ones I see usually disapear very shortly. You can pat yourself on the bak, you as a leader help to present the Team aspect of the game.
It’s the off season, go enjoy your family. I know the joy of getting to spend those precious times with family, I spend a lot of time away from home, and relish those days I can spend with the family enjoy them and good luck

  29. atwater8 Says:

In 97 the year we won the super bowl…Elway restructured his contract to make room for Neil. Champ has so much doe…do you think he would do the same? All the cash in the world can’t buy the ring. I hope the leaders on this team set the same example. All it takes is one guy to start it…and I think it would inspire not only the current looker room but also FA. You’re the man Fox!! I hope they sign you soon

  30. tigervixxxen Says:

I hope you enjoy some time off this winter and get he rest you need. I think a lot of Broncos fans don’t watch ESPN, I’ve been saying for a long time there is an east coast bias and sometimes thats not very fun to listen to. I will be watching the playoffs and I know the Broncos will be back very soon. There were a lot of teams who rebounded from not so successful seasons in 2006 to make the playoffs this season. Stay safe and keep in touch, we all look forward to your next blog soon.

  31. Shutdown Says:

    Hey Dom

The season didn’t come out as well as we’d all hoped, but I think the potential is enormous. There’s a lot of young talent that just needs to be developed. Way to stick with it and give us some exciting football to watch. I’m very excited for next year! In fact, I just got a new Denver pennant to hang on the wall. Well, it’s not actually new, but pretty oldschool with the big D on it and everything awesome. Good luck in the offseason and hopefully we’ll see you back next year.

I wanted to ask you a question about Bates stepping down as DC. Why do you think he decided to leave? I know that you and certain other players on the team always bring your best to the field, but do you think that lack of effort on the part of other players was frustrating to Bates while trying to put the new scheme in place?

  35. superchop7 Says:

Hopefully, this isn’t the last comment I leave you and I hope you can stay in an orange and blue uniform. You will be a crucial part of the success of the team in the future and I hope the front office sees it also. Best of luck where ever you may be next season and thanks for all the memories. It’s a distraction,……. probably ruined our entire season.,,,, not that “I” have a problem with it,,,,,it’s the other 4 million Coloradans that are causing the ruckus.

  40. flyeaglefly Says:

Hey Fox,Honestly You did not have the best year,I would suggest you ad 20 to 25 lbs and watch every playoff game to see how the Corners and dbs are supposed to tackle. Before a player can be GREAT he must have a passion for the game and the focus on his position. When you say you dont want to watch the playoffs tells me you are not 100% committed to the game. I think you have the potential but lack the commitment. If you are back the first thing to do is give up Blogging and Focus on Playing the Game. Good Luck

  41. ncheel2 Says:

Flyeaglefly your comments reminds of some of the other losers that post negatively. I ask folks like you all the time- what’s your 40 time, how much do you bench, and I missed seeing your name on any pop warner team roster. Honestly, the team did not have a good year. Coaching was poor, offense out of whack, and defence trying to find an identify. I think Fox did a decent job. Going into the season, he was to start opposite champ, then they brought in dre, and he came in to start on injuries, etc., and is the nickle. Again when injured, he was in for Lynch and Ferguson, even though others were on the bench heavier and true safties. If I was on a team I’d like to have a player that could play two-three positions well. Again, I don’t know everything about player competence, but having a player like Fox is a no-brainer. But losers who don’t know the game, probably can’t see this, but zoom in one small thing. I don’t want to be associated with a losing team either, so if players don’t want to watch all of the playoff games, that’s their deal. They deserve time to relax and get away. You are stretching in by talking all this madness about his commitment level- I bet you’re couldn’t do 1/5 of what these players do on the field. I’m hard on players also, but to point of talking them down as losers as you do, who couldn’t even run the length of the field. If you could, have someone time you and post your time here. Good luck loserflybird.

So, I’m asking the impossible, but am wondering how I would go about inviting you to my class to talk to the students about the importance of education. We use the College in Colorado site. My students are juniors and seniors in high school and I am desperately struggling with finding ways to make an impact on their futures.

I know this is not a typical response to a post, but, hey, creativity might get me what I need for my students.

    Thanks,

    Linda
