Young Waived

April 30th, 2009 - 3:45pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos announced on Thursday that running back Selvin Young has been waived.

Young joined the Broncos in 2007 as a college free agent from the University of Texas. He played 23 games (13 starts) in two seasons with Denver, totaling 201 rushes for 1,032 yards (5.1 avg.) with two touchdowns and 38 receptions for 247 yards (6.5 avg.).

Agreed. So much potential. Nolan can whip that D into shape. McD will get the most from his QB’s and the rest of the O. I’m excited to watch Moreno in action.

  2. McDanielsDomain09 says:

hotsizzle yes a rivalry is a rivalry nd it always will be. i think itll always be bitter. i think tht the broncos-chargers has been the more headlined rivalry for the last couple years seeing as after 2005 there was a dynamic shift in the AFC west powers nd we went frm champs to the middle of the pack. i think the fact that we have a new coach thats gonna turn the team around, a young stud at rb, the fact that the raiders are prolly gonna suck for the next 10 years, nd the fact that the chargers continue to be a dominate team that the charger-broncos rivalry will become much larger than the raiders-broncos. still hate them M-fers tho

  3. McDanielsDomain09 says:

So wuhda u guys think of this Tom Brandstater character. I watched film on him nd i think hes great. he fits the scheme perfectly not to mention he’s 6’5. his filmed reminded me of Matt Cassel. i think in this system if hes really dedicated i think he has the potential to be the starter as soon as next year wen Kyle Ortons contract is up. If K.O. doesnt get it done.

So definately, Wuhda u guys think of Brandstater?

    Go Broncos

  4. tnalen66 says:

Too early to tell. We should know in pre season how he does.

  5. brian_schneider says:

If anyone can trun Brandstater into an NFL QB it has to be McDaniels, obviously look what he has done with Brady and Cassel. If I were Orton or Simms I would be watching my back. Next season we could have our franschise QB. Who knows right?

I really thought that Torrain would have been let go before young. They both have some issues, Torrain (injuries) Young (ball security/injuries). Ball security is something that can be worked on. Injuries not so much. I willing to bet we’ll get ride of at least 1 if not 2 more HB before our 53 man roster is complete. I would personally like to so Knowshow (duh), Arrington, and Buckhalter or Hillis as our short yardage guy. I think Torrain will be let go just because he’s injury prone.

Does anyone know what is up with Sheffler? I don’t know I just heard that we might trade him or he was unhappy? I didn’t think anything was happening there but I don’t know.

  6. Broncs55 says:

From what I hear, Brandstater isn’t the best qb out there… but neither was Cassel. I think he was drafted to just have around in case Orton was injured for the season. Simms, having the issues he has, could easily get injured as well. That is why Simms won’t start.

We need a 3rd string quarterback, just in case. I don’t think he has potential to start in any scheme in the NFL… of course I thought the same of Cassel so who knows!?!

I live in Chicago, however. I’ve seen Orton. People says he couldn’t beat out Grossman for the better half of 3 years. That is not true. Fans were so ticked about Grossman starting it was ridiculous! Orton got the Bears to the Superbowl. What does the coach in Chicago do? He starts Grossman for it.

Denver fans need to stop doubting Kyle. He may not know how to win the hearts of fans, but he knows how to play the game, and his position quite well!

Kyle Orton knows how to manage a clock. He knows how to read a defense. The bears are a smashmouth team and have been for years. They run the ball. Kyle wasn’t given the chance to throw down field. He can make the throws Cutler did, just not with the same velocity.

His arm is not as quick, however, he knows his strengths and weakness’. He does not make poor judgments. He will not throw into double or triple coverages, however if it is man to man, he will give his receiver a chance to make the play.

Everyone will stop doubting Kyle soon. He is a leader, he is a good solid QB. No, he’s no John Elway, or Peyton Manning, or even Tom Brady… but he is solid under center!

Cutler knew how to put up some big numbers. He knew how to drive a team down the field. The one thing the offense couldn’t do last year was score. They were horrible inside the red zone! Kyle can score though. He only takes what the defense gives him. He does not try to do anything stupid with the ball.

I think our defense improved immensely this offseason. I think we will be better at stopping the run with Dawkins, Ayers, Doom and the Bailey brothers! And with a solid offense, one who can score in the red zone, I think we are playoff bound! Do I think we are SB bound? No, not quite yet. However, I do feel a few key players on defense over the next couple seasons we could be. But heck, on any given Sunday, who knows what could happen!?!

  7. BroncoMath101 says:

Orton never got them to the superbowl, that was grossman. Actually it was their defense but Grossman was the QB when they went. I still like Orton better because he is more of a team player and doesn’t feel like he has to take the team on his shoulders and make mistakes like Grossman did. I don’t know about this QB we drafted but he has the size and arm and is smart so hopefully he will develop into a capable starter down the road. I think if he can ride the pine like Brady and Cassel did and learn a thing or two it will be most beneficial for him.

I am sad to see Young go and will be even sadder to see Scheffler go because he is a fan favorite but if we are going to support the Team then we might have to sacrifice him so that our Coach has all the players for his system that will make it a success and we know that his system needs blocking tight ends not necessarily receiving ones. I hope he stays around but we’ll see. Nothing will surprise me anymore (knock on wood).

    Go Broncos!

  8. Broncs55 says:

Bronco… Grossman was pulled 3/4 though that season due to a injury/lack of production. Orton came in and carried them through the playoffs. Grossman recovered and started the SB.

    That is my recollection anyhow.

  9. McDanielsDomain09 says:

    thnx for the feedback.
One thing i will say tho for the people who said brandstater isnt a good qb nd by far way down on the list of qb’s in this draft… DURH.. Brandstater is wut u call a PROJECT QB. His role will be to ride the pine for a year or two to master the offense. The key for him along with the team is CAN he Learn it nd does he have enough passion to become a great QB. Broncs55 i really dont think anyones doubting orton anymore. but one thing we miss is a star power QB. Not many teams get franchise qb. nd its even harder to find 1s wit star power. philip rivers franchise QB 0% star power, Jamarcus Russel David Gerard franchise QB 0% star power, even old guys like bulger nd hasselbck Franchise QBs but with little to NO star power. Aaron Rodgers Franchise QB nd a great player one of my favs. Not very much star power. there are like 5 or 6 Franchise QBs with star power Matt Ryan, Big Ben, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, nd Eli Manning. u could even consider Drew brees but i dnt think so. Even romo who is a good player at best has star power. ONe thing Jay Cutler had tht neither Orton or Simms has is star power. Each star has it for a specific reason Big ben tom cuz of super bowls, eli cuz of the play, peyton because of his knowledge of the game, matt ryan cuh of his rookie season nd jay because of his arm. Thats wuh we lost in jay nothin more in my opinion. We had THE GREATEST qb in NFL history and he had to much star power to handle. nd weve been looking for another ever since. Alot of people one a franchise QB with star power tht can lead them to the superbowl. but thats hard to come by. Now we might have found a franchise qb in one of the three guys cuz there all kinda young but its unlikely that well find an NFL STAR in them maybe Brandstater cuh he hasnt made a name for himself yet but who knows.

But one question i have for everyone is. if u had to choose would u rather have a Star QB with all the fame nd media in the world but not enough to get to the superbowl. or a good QB nd another ring!

Ill take that 3rd ring before anything. dnt think any team wants another tony romo

  10. beefdirkus says:

    brian_schneider:
I heard during the draft that Denver picked up a Tight End because Sheffler was either going to be traded or would not resign at the end of the year (this is the last year of his contract). I guess he was vocal and upset when they traded Cutler.
I have not heard anything recently but would not be supprised if they trade him. I think the new offensive sceme uses more of a blocking tight end, like Graham and the new draft pick (forgot his name), where Sheffler is more of a pass catcher.

  11. NY_BroncoMan says:

Interesting that Shefs agent is Bus Cook also???? Who cares about Sheffler…the dude can’t ever stay healthy anyway. He has potential tom be a great catching TE but he has not proven he can endure in his health as an NFL player.

…Don’t get me wrong i’d like to see him stay but if he’s being a cry baby and start sucking binkies & bottles with Bus Baby then trade him and get another starter in a needed position for him. We drafted a TE and have Graham who proved he can be productive in the pass game as well, ..just not down field like Shef can. Thats what we’ll miss with Shef is the down field TE thret like Sharpe (i said “like” sharpe of course he was much better)

  12. dlmyers says:

Dallas has a standing 3rd round offer for Tony Scheffler. That was announced before and during the draft. Since Tony is JUST a recieving TE and the new offense utilizes TE for blocking mainly, why hasn’t Coach McD pulled the trigger? HUM

  13. denverbro89 says:

Maybe since we cut Young, we can pursue Larry Foote, him and Andra Davis in the middle, D.J Williams and Boss on the outside, Moss and Doom can come in as situational LBs, not forcing them to learn the position so quickly and thrown in the fire before being completely ready to play LB.

  14. SBXXXII..Iwzthr! says:

Broncs55…good post. Not that I need any confirmation that Orton is a solid QB, but you sold me anyway. I’m excited for him and hope he can really have a great career in Denver.

Hotsizzle…love your post about Woodyard. I completely agree and hope he gets some big award this year and puts a pounding on players! Hope Larsen can really do some damage, too!

    Go Broncos!!

  15. dlmyers says:

DynamicDave, 1am what are you nuts that early. You really must be looking for news.
Young did not surprise. Moreno, Buckhalter Jordan, Arrington, Torain, and Hillis.
Love the Chris Baker CFA pickup. Hope he is ready to start his NFL career.
Tom Brandstater is just a 3rd QB at this time. They do need someone to run the practice squad.
And I totally agree, can not wait to see Moreno in the offense.
    Stay healthy neighbor!

  16. broncoholico says:

Question: Why haven’t we looked into former Buc Simeon Rice? I know he may be on the decline a little bit, but it doesn’t mean he can’t be a temporary solution for us at the DE spot? Then we would just need a solid Nose Tackle to be legit.

  17. NastyNate says:

Broncoholic I think we haven’t gone after Rice cuz our roster is heave on DE and DT last time I checked we have 7 DTs and 5 or 6 DEs so thats probably why. not saying I wouldn’t mind him here but we do have alot of people on roster which doesn’t mean much.

And I think I would have rather waived Toraine I liked selvin he was a beast till he got hurt but I don’t mind cutting him cuz he was hurt alot so i just cant wait to see moreno runnin over the raiders

  18. highkilla707 says:

he’ll be a good 3rd down back somewhere else. but ya i here all this talk about Julius Peppers but y rnt we out there trying to get a player like this. I believe we could use someone like him

  19. NY_BroncoMan says:

Selvin had some decent vision and could see some holes but he was average in speed and his ability to make tacklers miss. He wasn’t a pounder either. IMO he was an average RB in a good O line system.

L Jordan would blow Young out the water. When Jordan is healthy he can be a top 5 back (def top 10) in NFL. Well at least 2 yrs ago he was. But if still in his prime (we’ll see) he can pound the ball for tough yardage, he can catch out of backfield (awesome with screens) and he is amazingly fast for his size. You put Moreno, Jordan and Hillis in our backfield (and if Moreno is all he’s cracked up to be) we easily have the best backfield in the NFL. That’s gonna be fun to watch unfold.

  20. Broncs55 says:

I’m not sure if everyone knows but we are nearing our salary cap. To get Julius we would need to release a lot of players. However, you cannot simply release players unless they are not at the end of their contract, or your contract states that the team can release you at any time without being penalized, which I don’t think any agent would allow!

Julius is a big time player. Big time players are big time names which require a big time salary. The Broncos, unfortunately, do not have the cap space for such a player.

  21. beefdirkus says:

    Broncs55,
You hit it on the head. A lot of people are discouraged that we did not go after Peppers or Foote or a number of other high profile players. The problem is salary cap room. There is not enough cap room to sign a lot of high profile players. If the Broncos did sign a high profile player, ie Peppers, they would need to release a few high profile players that are on the team to make room. When you release players, you still take a hit on the salary cap.
That is why it is easy to say the Broncos should sign Peppers or Foote, but where do you find the cap room and money?

  22. rebelbronco says:

broncoholico, we had Simeon Rice on our team two years ago in 2007 and he was horrible!!

  23. theise says:

I don’t care what people say. We have talent, it will come together, and we will be a great team. Let’s move forward and kick ass!

  24. BroncosLax says:

What do you think of the Broncos possibly signing Brett Favre?

  25. Dynamicdave says:

dlmyers, ha, ha. It was only 12AM in Vegas when I posted. Yeah, I think Denver has a full stable of RB’s to pave the way but I think Moreno will get the bulk of the carries.

  26. kase78matt says:

yea rice was bad thats y he was cut mid season

  27. kase78matt says:

some of u doom fans wont like this but i say we trade doom for peppers. peppers fits our 3-4 better and i see doom strugglin to start lb

  28. Deify_you says:

kase78matt I for one dont see any problem trading away Dumerville, but I think they want little more than Doom for Peppers though. I was hoping to see some draft picks traded for Peppers.

  29. kase78matt says:

they were willing to take a 2nd rnder for him so who knows

  30. BroncosLax says:

I also saw the issues with Doom in our new defense, I only see him as a new end, so I think A trade for Peppers would be awesome! Moss, Ayers, and Crowder should stay at end and put some weight on. Our Line Backing Corp is too deep; Woodyard, Williams, Davis, Bailey are all starters in my mind, and then we still have Webster, and signed Griesin, Not to mention Green so I think the need is DE who can play 3-4 that means size. We have good DE’s they are just undersized, Ayers Put 20lbs on, Moss put 10-20 on, and Crowder 10lbs. Thats just what I think and Marcus thomas can also convert to End or Put some weight on and become a NT.

  31. dlmyers says:

BroncosLax… man you need to wakeup and smell the coffee.
First you say go get Brett Favre (really dumb because he is DONE and Bus Cook). Now you post to get Julius Peppers and pay him (OH about $12-16million). Are you nuts. First off, like Coach McD stated when he took the job “we will NOT have a player make big $$ and cost the team” and second Peppers has NEVER played in the 3-4 so NOBODY knows how good he would be. BIG GAMBLE.
BroncosLax…another two pieces to your post. Moss has tried for two years to gain weight, did not happen. And Nate Webster was the first BUM that the Broncos cut.

  32. Dynamicdave says:

Dimyers, agreed. Peppers is asking too much and I actually disagree with the thinking that Doom won’t fit (kase78matt). They were saying for years that he was too small to be a DE yet he proved that heart and gameness and technique can get the job done. They may move Doom to OLB but IMHO he will still be a Bronco.

  33. BroncosLax says:

Sometimes to fix a Defense like our own we need to make a drastic change. True Peppers has never played in a 3-4 but look at him: he is a FORCE on Defense, He weighs around 290lbs, and he has speed that would rival dumerviles. Now I love Dumervile, but he does not fit as a LB. He is 5’11 and one reason mauluga fell was for his height. You say big Gamble, but how is it a gamble if he has proven him self over the last few years. Any Defense needs a piece to build around, look at The Ravens, Ray Lewis. they put pryce, Reed, Suggs, and other solid players around him. This offseason we got solid guys to add to the solid guys who were already present. Dawkins, Davis, Hill, to add to Champ, D.J, and others. In the Draft we got ayers a versatile guy, so what is wrong with getting one more? Oh and as for Favre I was not implying we get him, just that I like the idea. Youd say he’s done? He is not DONE he has a year or two left, and You can see this from game film from last year. With the JETS he had no PASSION, but with another team maybe he relights a fire and plays how he always has. I know one thing he has more heart then any NFL player in the league. That means if he comes back then he will give anything he has to the team he goes to, and I wouldn’t mind it being Denver, not to mention that he would look awesome wearing the number 4 in blue and orange. As for Bus Cook, the agent represents the players interests so if Favre wanted to return Bus Cook would find a place that would pay most, and a place where Brett would want to play. Dont suspect lingering tensions between bus cook and the former team of one of his clients!

  34. Dynamicdave says:

BroncosLax, Peppers isn’t going to happen. He wants too much money and McD made it clear that he will not bring in a high priced player. Also keep in mind that Denver is still working out contracts for 2, #1 picks. They only have so much money to play with. As good as it would be to have the talent of Peppers, he won’t fit in Denvers budget. Also, Peppers hasn’t signed the franchise contract that Carolina drew up for him so a lot of things are still in the air with him. McD wants someone with a team concept, not a “me” concept. He is also a risk to be paid the $$ he’s asking to play a position in a 3=4 that he’s never played before. Athlete or not, he would not be a guarantee to dominate that position. Sorry, but you spoke of gambles. That is a financial gamble that I would hate to see Denver make. Doom may not be at the DE position by the start of the season. He may be at OLB. He may be used as a hybrid. He is faster then you gave him credit for. His speed is what helped him be successful at DE. Also his strength. I think you underestimate him and his heart.

  35. kase78matt says:

i dont think peppers has mentioned wantin money thats not his problem in carolina he just doesnt want to be there n e more. i think thats where McD’s issue will be he just had a player like this y bring 1 like that in? i mean obviously peppers is worth a good chunck of money just makin sure ppl know he wants out of carolina for other reasons than money. and i dont think theres n e gamble with him other than him turnin around and doin this crap to us. play wise he’s amazing had a career high 14.5 sacks last season but we dont have that dynamic DT to get double teamed

  36. meisner says:

if we stay healthy this year. look for our offense to put up huge numbers
and orton never had a solid running game in chicago when he played, it was always off and on. we have deepest depth at RB in the whole league, there is always going to be fresh legs in there to either catch the ball out of the back field or run it. i also cant wait to see how orton plays with the best o-line and wide recievers in the league. look for eddie to be a wes welker type player, he should make the pro bowl this year. if nolan gets the defense in shape and have to scheme down, we do have a great secondary, a little old but thats why we took some players in the draft at safety and corner cause once dawkins bailey and others retire, these kids will be ready to start. im hoping for a great training camp and a great season

  37. monodono says:

Webster was a free agent, not cut.

bus cook is a snake, He uses questionable tactics reguardless of who he is looking out for. (himself) I hope The Broncos do trade Sheffler.

BroncosLax, your right on one thing you said, The Broncos have too many LB’s and not enough room even in a 3-4 D.
    Ayers, Robert DE/LB 6′ 3″ 272
    Bailey, Boss LB 6′ 3″ 232
    Davis, Andra LB 6′ 1″ 250
    Dumervil, Elvis DE/LB 5′ 11″ 260
    Green, Louis LB 6′ 3″ 237
    Greisen, Nick LB 6′ 1″ 250
    Haggan, Mario LB 6′ 3″ 263
    Kelley, Braxton LB 6′ 0″ 230
    Larsen, Spencer FB/LB 6′ 2″ 240
    Moss, Jarvis DE/LB 6′ 6″ 265
    Reid, Darrell DL/LB 6′ 2″ 288
    Schweiger, Jeff LB 6′ 5″ 276
    Williams, D.J. LB 6′ 1″ 240
    Woodyard, Wesley LB 6′ 1″ 230
Thats 14, counting all the Crossovers. The Broncos will sign one or two to the practice squad if they clear waivers. One or two will be ST players.
The Broncos Will keep as many as 10 on the active roster, maybe more when you count the Crossovers, but that’s doubtfull.
Bottom line is someone has to go and who it will be may be a shocker.
    Oh and favre sucks!

kase78matt, your right Peppers would be a great addition, but a gamble on weather He would want to back out, The Broncos don’t have that proven NT yet, and He would surely cost to much.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  38. BroncosLax says:

The Broncos also should sign Hollis Thomas a Proven DT. As for Favre, again I just like the idea and as I said before never underistimate him, wasn’t he spent before the season he led the Packers to the NFC Championship? Just a thought. As for Dumerville, I do not question his heart, as he plays with more passion then many other players, but his skill set is used as a passrusher in a 4-3, he is NOT a HYBRId, hybrids have height normally that is why he would not fit with our defense, If he stays a Bronco I would only want to see him play on the line, because that is where he can suceed. And I know Dumerville has great speed, I was just pointing out that peppers also has speed. Peppers is not proven? He has Size, He has Speed, He has Strength, and he is VERSATILE. He hasn’t played in a 3-4? You can say the same thing about Tyson Jackson who just happened to go 3rd in the first round to the Chiefs to play in a 3’4. Don’t enderestimate someone who would have something to prove, that is why I wont underestimate Dumerville. Peppers would help transform this defense period. Now will we get him? I doubt it but if we do, then I will be the first to welcome him.

  39. BroncosLax says:

I also don’t like how everyone inside and out of the Broncos Community is putting down Kyle Orton. He is a proven starter, and knows how to WIN. He may not put up numbers to rival those of Cutler, But he is savy, and intelligent. If you remember, Cutler often locked onto Brandon Marshal, trying to force passes in, ending up making mistakes, 18 INT’s. A guy like Orton will consider all options and that means no looking onto Marshall (Sorry Brandon). And McDaniels is smart because he notices that Orton is just not as good of a QB as cutler, so what does he do? He drafts Knowshon Moreno, the best running back in the draft who plays an all around game. I can help but to quote monodono; “TIME OF POSSESION!” Our new revamped running game will help with time of possession, which lacked last year. Who knows the best medicine for a defense may be a great running game, which is what I see with our new depth at RB!

  40. Dynamicdave says:

I like Orton. True, he won’t light up the field as Jay could, but he is smart and has good managing skills. He will fit into McD’s system, which is all about ball management. Orton should thrive in it. My question was why they got Simms, who is a left handed QB and Clady won’t be able to protect his blind side? Don’t get me wrong, I like Chris, but It seems odd to pick up a left handed QB with Clady working the wrong side to protect him. As for Peppers, I would be shocked if Denver somehow got him. They would have to release 2-3 players to be able to afford him and as I said, McD made it clear that their is no I in team. Peppers will cost too much. Denver has already extended themselves with 2,1st rounders, all the 2nd rounders and FA and UFA. I just don’t see their pocketbook being that deep to acquire Peppers.

  44. Dynamicdave says:

kase78matt, actually, Peppers was offered 1 million per game by Carolina. 16 million a season. Do you think he would play for Denver because he “loves the game?” I think not.

  45. buffs78 says:

josh sucks tearing down the 2nd rated off-when he should be working on the def-trading a 1st round pick already from next yr to get a running back when we already have some good ones-i have never said this but gor raiders-i want to see josh go down hard and fast-he has completley tore this off up

  46. buffs78 says:

every one is backing orton when he sucks this yr and culter tears it up on the field then we will see the conments all u backing orton will need to shut your mouth when this happens and dont blog orton sucks go cutler

  47. BroncosLax says:

buffs78 you are smoking something really strong because the Broncos traded a first round pick for one of the best coverage CB’s in the draft. Orton is going to have a great year with our offense, and Cutler will find himself wishing he has the b****s to take what happened and move on when the bears miss the playoffs with Mr. SCREWUP! Orton must have been celebrating when he found out he was going to be traded away from the bears, a team with a weak offense, and a weakining defense, to tak the reins of the Broncos fine tuned offense that is only improving. It’s fans like you that the Broncos don’t need so go and support the Bears or the Raiders, tey deserve you. You dont deserve to be a Denver Fan!

  48. Dynamicdave says:

Broncoslax, couldn’t have said it better. buffs78, you need to know a thing or too about football, as well as being a fan. # 2 offense, yes, but we stunk in the red zone. Yes, our RB’s were beat up but Cutler was still forcing the ball in the red zone and getting intercepted. You have it in your head that Denver is running Shanahans system? Sorry to disappoint, but this is McD’s system and some of the players don’t fit. If you don’t think that Moreno can thrive in this offense, which is all about ball management, or that Orton won’t be successful with all the weapons he has, you are only lying to yourself. Talking about a negative post. You wish bad on the Broncos? You say Orton sucks this year but the season hasn’t even started? You said he traded away his 1st round to get a RB? No he didn’t. Get your facts straight before you rant. He gave away next years 1st to get a 2nd round pick in Smith (CB). He may be a gem. He might even be good enough to replace Goodman in a year. He is the same size as DWill. You said McD has done nothing for our D? Ayers is nothing, I suppose? We have new safeties to help our ST which was the worst in the league. He got a CB. He picked up a lot of UFA on D. Baker will be a good player. Know your facts before you blog. You root for the Raiders to beat Denver? Then why are you here? You are not a Broncos fan. You give true fans a bad name. Move to Oakland and support them, rather then wasting our time with your gibberish.

  49. Dynamicdave says:

Meant to type “thing or two”, not “too”. My bad.

  50. monodono says:

buffs78, is a Raiders fan just getting you all rieled up.
