Yellow Jacket Connection

December 30th, 2011 - 9:07am by Stuart Zaas

Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas spent his first season at Georgia Tech with Lions Pro Bowl wideout Calvin Johnson. Thomas soaked up as much as he could from Johnson, who was a senior, which was evident this past December.

Thomas and Johnson finished the month with the exact same statistics. The pair tied for the NFL lead with 414 receiving yards in December, and both did so on 22 catches. Each player caught three touchdowns, which tied for fifth in the NFL during that span.

“It’s cool — two guys from Tech with the same numbers,” Thomas said. “It was just funny. I’m actually going to call him about it today and talk to him.”

The two have remained in touch since their days as teammates ended, and crossed paths earlier this season when the Lions visited Sports Authority Field at Mile High in October.

Thomas, who says that Johnson was one of the main reasons he decided to attend Georgia Tech, watches film of Johnson’s play throughout the season to try to pick up on things that the Lions receiver does well.

“When I started playing football, I went to Tech to do the things he did,” Thomas said. “We’re both big, fast receivers.”

Johnson has set a good standard for Thomas to strive for — the fifth-year receiver ranks second in the NFL with 1,437 receiving yards this season and is tied for the league lead with 15 touchdown catches on the year.

Thomas battled back from injuries early in the year to post a breakthrough December that saw him record his first two career 100-yard games. Johnson and the Lions clinched a playoff berth last weekend against San Diego — Thomas and the Broncos would like to continue that mirrored success this Sunday versus Kansas City.

I’m glad People got a chance to See the Real RG3 last night…

Outplayed by the opposing QB, but he won… Collin Klein outplayed him this year as well… He doesn’t have nearly as strong as arm as Vick, or Tebow… Evidence on the 3 deep balls he threw… two badly underthrown, (1 caught however) and one very badly overthrown while RG3 was moving…

    Love the Kid, glad he’s a Bronco fan… But Glad he’s not Coming here!!! :o ) :o )

  9. baylinorcrush says:

Turtle and his agendas, too funny.

  10. Bronco_Turtle says:

It was Unreal the offense in that game last night… Like Madden with Comp Tackling off…

17 TD’s!!!! Seventeen! The game will air on ESPN as an Instant Classic this week, so you guys will have lots of chances to see Baylors Offense RUN over Washington! It was AWESOME!!!

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!

  11. Bronco_Turtle says:

I know you watched the game Bay!!! LOL… my agenda is getting the most talent on the field…

  12. Bronco_Turtle says:

Thomas should be reaching the point in his life where his body is done growing so fast and it should show in his ability to stay on the field next season…

DMT is a STUD… Point blank… I’m excited to have him!!!

  13. daddybronc says:

I’m going to agree with Turtle….when Tebow quits under throwing the ball as well. It is obvious that Tebow could curl RG3 with one arm – speaking to durability.

Very entertaining game – that’s the reason I can hardly stand college ball – no NFL team could field defenses that bad.

  14. Bronco_Turtle says:

Here’s my AGENDA Bay… ;o) Just so people understand, in case they miss the games and only listen to you praise RG3 likes he IS the next coming of Elway…

23/37 For 438 yards and 4 touchdowns (or)

    24/33 for 295 yards and 1 touchdown…

People in the Audience… Pick RG3 stat line…

I’m not saying anything derogatory about RG3… But why can he be praised for doing what Tebow did in College and then Tebow get bashed for doing it (Winning) in the NFL?

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Comparing RG3 to Tebow is like comparing apples to oranges, not even close as to the depth of their skills as far as the NFL is concerned, just listen to all the analysts and maybe open your mind a little.

But we have Tebow, it is what it is, we need to make the best of it for now and if it’s meant to be long term I hope that pans out too.

  16. Bronco_Turtle says:

They said the same things about Andre Ware as they do as RG3… Ware even won the heisman… I can see the games, same one the anaylsts watch…

  17. baylinorcrush says:

You are right Turtle, you are always right. Absolutely zero agenda in your views, just purely neutral take on everything, my bad.

  18. Bronco_Turtle says:

Bay, It’s not like that at all… and I’m very seldom right, that’s why I try to post evidence…

I like RG3… I wish him the very best… he is exciting to watch… Everyone can have their own oppinion and what happens will happen, with or without us speaking our minds…

I feel strongly about things, like you… so I will present my side for all to see… I’m sorry if it offends you

  19. Bronco_Turtle says:

ONE LOVE in Bronco Country! :o )

If you want me to quit posting on your blog I will… But I really enjoy the conversations here…

  20. DenFan_Iowa says:

Can not wait til sunday hope the broncos keep winning I have watched three games in a row most in years.(2005) anyone

  21. applejack says:

    So, strong opinions aside,

What makes a great NFL quarterback?

Tom Landry described Roger Staubach as “possibly the best combination of a passer, an athlete and a leader to ever play in the NFL.” Staubach was the 129th pick of the ’64 draft.

Tom Brady was a 6th rounder.

    Drew Brees was pick 32.

    Aaron Rodgers was pick 24

    Peyton Manning was 1.

  22. Bronco_Turtle says:

What did you think of the TE from Washington, number 88? He looked like he could help out an offense somewhere…

Seferian-Jenkins was his name… TE is a position that needs the most improvement on our Roster at the moment I think… lots of weak spots but TE is a considerable hole…

  23. DenFan_Iowa says:

The problem with Tebow is people want him to lose. They cheer when he fails and joke about it with friends over a beer. They have giving the man no credit for what he has done. He gets bashed by ever man wearing a suit that gets paid to evaluate players but they are not worth the toilet paper I wipe with. I hope he keeps winning proves these guys really have no idea what they are talking about.

  24. daddybronc says:

Well… a little tension on the blog this morning!!!….it’s all good!…keeps the blood flowing.

Sorry Bay – you know I think BT is right and he’s right because Tebow does have the better college stats and a few NFL wins, that’s all we really know. Tebow may never get the credit for what he able to do because people continue to tell him HE CAN’T because of what they see. And yet…he continues to succeed. If he is given the opportunities that his real stats have earned him. Tebow will make good. If people continue to say he can’t and refuse him the opportunities. Well…

I respect what those who dislike Tebow are saying. I can see the flaws. And Bay, I respect that you have always said you want Tebow to have his shot. But you know as well as I do just how many Heisman-s have flopped. BT is def. right about that.

I hope EFX does not bring in another QQ for 2012.

I think the Tebow as starter is a done deal already for the fall. But I don’t think TT is impervious to not having the confidence of the front office.

  25. DenFan_Iowa says:

I get better info off of these blogs then i do from any other sites.

  26. 1nOnlyTRB says:

The point is in college RG3 is a mirror image of Tebow … but Tebow received and continued to received on unbelievable skeptism for a guy who hadn’t played in the NFL yet. RG3 is praised however and I like the kid, need more like him, his athleticism is pheonomenal and his arm is good. But Tebow had some pretty awesome stat lines in college too … passing and running wise. Just a different QB. Both hiesman winners. And if they were RBs Tebow would be Peyton Hillis and RG3 chris johnson. Just different styles. Either way … I wish RG3 the best … im always hopeful for black QBs … always pray they don’t blow it like many of them often do. Or get turned into WRs.

    TRB

  27. DrunkenBronc says:

Florida was stacked with NFL prospects….how many prospects come out of Baylor?

Florida > Baylor….stick Manning on the Browns and see how his passing stats would look.

  28. DenFan_Iowa says:

Well TRB do you think RG3 would do better in the Pros.

  29. DenFan_Iowa says:

I mean do you think he is more of what people want in a QB

  30. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I believe RG3 will be fantastic in the pros .. seems to have his head on straight unlike some of the young black QBs. Russel, young, marcus vick, etc. I look forward to seeing him in the NFL and I hope he succeeds. I believe guys like him are exciting in football. Would suck/be boring if everyone and every QB was a carbon copy of each other on all the NFL teams. TRB

  31. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I dunno … the definition of QB is slowly being re-written thx to guys like Cam and Tebow but it has long been trying to get re-written by guys like vick, mcnab, mcnair, randall cunnningham, and other dual threats before them that i didn’t mention. But its yet to be re-written so we will see. Lets not forget they game cam a hard time too because he was the prototypical guy coming from a pro style offense or watever. So by thier definition I would say No … what they want is a statue in the pocket LOL> TRB

  32. daddybronc says:

TRB – I’m shocked!!! If someone made a similar comment about being a ‘white’ QB – he’d be run off the boards.

I wish RGIII the absolute best as well!!! LOL (he and Luck and the rest of the great college QB’s…just not in Denver.)

  33. baylinorcrush says:

    Just got done with lunch.

It’s a free country, it’s a public blog, no one will ever tell anyone they can’t post their opinions as long as they are acceptable to the moderators. However my recommendation is not to always getting involved over and over in rebuttals of whatever other bloggers say just for the sake of argument. Posting our own opinions is one thing, trying to constantly rebute the opinions of a select few is tiring to say the least and counter productive too. We are never going to agree on everything and that’s the beauty of it otherwise it would be boring as hell. But hanging on to the same arguments over and over is just over the top. I post my feelings, other post theirs, we agree to disagree, next subject please. That’s how we can keep a blog entertaining. Trying to make it a constant battle as to who’s right or wrong is wrong. Whether everybody is right or everybody is wrong, no one cares, at least I don’t. Some folks are just too intense is all, this is just a game and that’s unfortunately too often overlooked, so enjoy, let it flow, I try to.

  34. applejack says:

RG3 (like Von Miller) grew up in an intact two parent home. Fathers, fathers, fathers…..

  35. baylinorcrush says:

TRB is black, he is allowed, LOL.

  36. daddybronc says:

Oh AJ – you are way off. This is the 21st century. What do you mean? I can show you hundreds of single parent (mom only) homes where the kids turned out fine. LOL this blog is headed far afield… and I don’t have the time!

    Football anyone?

This week seems to be dragging. My Chemistry is telling me it should be close to the next dosage/fix of Bronco football…and it’s still 2 days away.

  37. daddybronc says:

I know TRB is genuinely African-American, that’s great! I just don’t think we ought to be voicing that type of preference. Almost like black athletes have a corner on ‘blow it’! They don’t !!!

  38. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Lol I am indeed black, but which statement exactly daddybronc were you referring too?

  39. applejack says:

    Daddybronc,

Not sure where you see that I said single parent homes (mom or dad) couldn’t raise great kids.

  40. daddybronc says:

AJ – I don’t know if the way I wrote that came across enough tongue in cheek. It was. I used to work with juvenile delinquents. 100% come from missing, abusive, or un-involved fathers. Has a lot to do with why I have 13 kids, and am very involved.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

For somebody who wanted to talk football…. haha, looks like a quagmire of sort.

  42. daddybronc says:

“I wish RG3 the best … im always hopeful for black QBs … always pray they don’t blow it like many of them often do.”

I know you didn’t mean anything by it. Just giving you a hard time. LOL

  43. baylinorcrush says:

Which brings me to the QQ.

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. daddybronc says:

Sorry Bay – I’m a quagmire waiting to happen!!!

  45. austin-bronco says:

Did you get my prediction Bay? it ended up as trhe last post on the last blog.

  46. baylinorcrush says:

    Sure did Austin buddy.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

Well, time to take all the outdoor Christmas lights down.

Keep it on the light side, you hear, LOL.

  48. 1nOnlyTRB says:

DB, Oh lol … that statement … they do man … and its mostly because of upbringing. Most of these black athletes used sports as a way to stay off the streets. But some of them still have hood dreams and wanna carry weapons, still stuff, fight with dogs, get stabbed by their crazy hood girlfriennds (cough cough lol) … its so infuriating when u have everything and throw it away for trying to still be a “thug”. Similar to rappers. Say they wanna make it, make it out and then go runnign back to doing dumb stuff. It buggles my mind but like you say … a strong family upbringing with both parents helps in these situations … thats how the big man upstairs invisioned families. And yea I guess technically im the definition of “african america” since I am nigerian born and partially raised. lol TRB

  49. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I see what you did there baylin, with the christmas lights and keeping it on the “light” side … youre a clever one :-) LOL

  50. daddybronc says:

Hey Bay – I’m totally offended that you would take down your Christmas lights before New Years. That is totally wrong!!! Where is it written that you can take down your lights early!!! LOL

Just pointing out that some folks could argue anything. It really is just as easy to be civil. LOL
