Back from Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl, General Manager Brian Xanders sat down to discuss his scouting trip to the annual college all-star game.
Xanders, the personnel staff and the coaching staff were all in Mobile from Monday to Wednesday, and the team is now working toward the NFL Scouting Combine.
Why is the Senior Bowl an important part of draft preparation?
“First of all, for our scouts, it’s a great opportunity to meet and interview players for the first time. When they’re on campus, they’re playing football and they’re going to school. But this is a great chance to meet them one-on-one. We get in on Sunday morning and then really chase down players, assigned by scout, and we interview them on all of the questions that we have on their background, football character and personal character.
“The second reason is it provides the first live exposure for a lot of our coaches. They can see the velocity of the football, to see them catch, to see them compete against good players, to see them in person, their body types, see how they work and compete in groups.”
What are you looking for when you watch practices?
“We saw four practices — two North and two South. I’m looking for guys that stand out in terms of athleticism, explosion and quickness, and it’s in all positions. Defensive backs, receivers, defensive line, the quarterbacks, running backs — you want to see some traits that project to the NFL.”
Are you happy with what was accomplished in Mobile?
“We got a lot done. We got the interviews in and we met as a staff. It’s a great opportunity to get everybody together and start the process for 2012.”
What was said in the full staff meeting?
“Just, ‘Here’s the plan, here’s what we’re working on, here’s your assignments — go execute the plan.’ It was good to get down there. It’s one of the first steps in the process.”

Clausen?!? NO! Any one think its odd that the Dolphins have another former bronco DC, Nolen, now Coyer. If the Phins go after Flynn or draft a QB Moore could be available and i would take him. I don’t like i idea of giving up a draft picks for someone else’s garbage.

knowing all this.. I appreciate how Champ is still going 100% at his age. It used to be Champ, Mathis, Trufant, Samuels, Al and Charles Woodson,etc.
now its mostly Champ and Charles (although he mostly plays safety).. Champ is truly Ironman.
I haven’t posted since the Del Rio move. Just wanted to say woo hoo! publicly. That couldn’t have worked out better for us. While I liked where Allen was going, I love where Del Rio IS. I believe he’ll be a great compliment to Fox. Only way this could get better is if McCoy stopped calling our plays. I think hes been great at developing our young players and even creating schemes, I just don’t like his play calling.

I was thinking why would Fox want him anyway? I think we have the better ND QB. He’s been in our system, has had more success than Jimmy Boy (not to mention i hear he is a somewhat of a head case) and won’t cost us a draft pick. Which is something we definitely need.
As for trading our #1 for more picks. I think that’s a bad idea too. While it may give us more picks that we need, we lose out on a first round talent that this team needs in our rebuild. IMO, it can work for certain organizations like NE, Bal and the Saints since they are already filled with high quality players, who are looking to add depth, we need players on the field producing. Then we can work on depth.
Man, The Beast was definitely in Beast Mode tonight.

A great job by all current and past players and coaches. I was very happy for MARSHALL. Thanks again McDenial! Miller could of been the MVP if it wasn’t for Marshall’s monster game. 2 sacks 1FF.Meyers looked real good. Great trade for Kubiac not a good move for Shanny. Statford should of been there instead of Newton.
Our OFFENSE could of been great if McDanial wouldn’t of shipped them out.
You Clausen fans can wait another year and the PANTHERS will cut him and then he will be free. I like the FOX comments on Clausen. I don’t think Fox wanted to draft him but the GM did.

Man I missed the game. Was in NY all weeked visiting my sister and we were all over the city. Just saw the game and thats how my boy does it. The man is a beast. Granted it was lazy football out there but give him a QB and he will go to work. People may not tackle but they atleast try to cover and he still did his thing. At the end of the day it was a record. Props to the beast. Still miss him in Denver. If there was a way to get him back I would be all for it. We need a vet reciever who goes after the ball not to mention yac. But he is a florida boy and he is happy to be there. So best of luck to him. Hope he gets Flynn as his QB and a coach that knows how to use him. And I udnerstand it was just pitch and catch football but I always love to see the man work lol
