Working Toward Ultimate Goal

August 23rd, 2012 - 5:10pm by Gray Caldwell

A year after an AFC West championship and a win in the Wild Card Round of the AFC Playoffs, expectations were already high for the Broncos.

They only got higher with a free agency class that included four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning.

But as far as Head Coach John Fox is concerned, he’ll let all the bold predictions come from outside the building.

“At the end of the day, I’ve been of the school (of thought) of understate, overproduce,” Fox said. “We’re obviously very pleased to have Peyton, yet we’re still trying to get ready as a football team, and we’re definitely not there yet.”

At the same time, Manning said the Broncos’ focus from the first day of offseason conditioning is on one thing — the Super Bowl.

“That’s our goal as a team every day,” Manning said. “That’s why we’re working hard, that’s why we pushed through two-a-days, that’s why we’ll be lifting weights here in 10 minutes, and trying to get better.”

Manning has reached that goal twice in his career, winning Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears.

Now in his 15th NFL season, the quarterback’s desire to get to the top of the league each and every year hasn’t waned.

“I really have tried to play with a sense of urgency since I’ve been 22 years old,” he said. “I think it’s only fair to the players on that current team that you give your very best. We all know that there’s not many players — the same players aren’t on the team in 2012 as they are in 2013, so it’s only fair to the people here that you’re giving your best effort in trying to have a sense of urgency, in trying to win now.”

But the next task ahead of the Broncos is the third game of the preseason, likely the starters’ final tune-up before the regular season begins. And Manning echoed Fox’s sentiment — the team still has work to do.

“There is a lot of time, and a lot of things are going to happen, between now and when the Super Bowl is played,” Manning said. “Our goal right now is to get better this week, play well against San Francisco, and try to beat Pittsburgh (in the regular-season opener).”

They snub him completely and I will be very disappointed.

Rod Smith will be in the HOF some day, but when? Rod is a class act!

Know y’all probably don’t care but this place is a ghost house besides us!

I love Rod Smith. I am so proud of Bowlen for inducting him into the Ring of Fame and I am so glad they chose to do it during the Texans game. Its only right.

    Rod Smith (con’t)

Only undrafted player to reach 10,000 receiving yards, and the 24th in history to eclipse that figure.

Has the most catches (849), receiving yards (11,389) and touchdown receptions (68) of any undrafted wide receiver in NFL history.

Holds Broncos franchise records in career receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches.

Ranks first on Denver’s all-time yards from scrimmage list.

    Hey all!

  8. tlcat06 says:

OT if he doesn’t make it into the hall its shameful!

  9. tlcat06 says:

    Hey DB what’s up?

  10. strandoftds82 says:

    AMEN to that Ticat!!

  11. strandoftds82 says:

OT, your making my head spin. LOL

  12. strandoftds82 says:

    DaddyBronco, how goes it?

  13. DaddyBronc says:

OT – Meck is my favorite from your list. What the stats don’t tell is how much of his career he sprnt double teamed and the havoc he reaped on offenses. Meck was the highest motor guy from that era – my opinion –

I never watched Gradishar much because he played for the Broncos before I was a Bronco fan, but obviously belongs.

I can’t believe Rod Smith is not in the HOF – makes no sense when his stats exceed many famers.

  14. DaddyBronc says:

    All is well in SoCal!

  15. tlcat06 says:

DB he’s not in the fame because the Broncos get no respect from the fame!

  16. DaddyBronc says:

Anybody have any definitive idea what MJD is doing?

  17. strandoftds82 says:

I remember Rod Smiths first catch ever, a TD against the Washington Redskins to finish a game thrown by John Elway when the clock was at zero. Rod just jumped up and snagged the ball out of the air. I remember it like it was just yesterday.

  18. strandoftds82 says:

Mums the word so far on MJD.

  19. strandoftds82 says:

Elway and Meck are from the same draft class of 1983. HaHa!!

  20. tlcat06 says:

DB he wants to stay with the Jags or so he says. I think he will stay in Jacksonville… but he might be saying that to get them to trade him! I know the Colts are going after a CB and not a RB.

  21. DaddyBronc says:

Somehow we need to make some noise such that Canton gives equal recognition around the league. It makes sense the the talking heads who get a vote are centered in New England / New York regions – that they are going to be fans of the east coast teams and give greater recognition there.

Somebody young with a lot of energy needs to assemble their soap box – initiate a letter writing campaign – maybe a boycott or two.

I think the solution is to be more balance in who votes them in.

  22. strandoftds82 says:

I`m gonna hit the hay. I`ve had a long day, brutal.

  23. tlcat06 says:

Me too! I agree. I will write letters if I have an address.

  24. tlcat06 says:

I am too strand! Back to real life for me tomorrow! Meetings! Night guys!

  25. DaddyBronc says:

Good Morning Broncos Nation! hahahaha ummmm, I mean COUNTRY! LMAO

    TGIF!

Here’s something that has to make you smile……….and start your Friday off right……….

My 16 month old is ready to watch her Broncos with daddy!

  28. ScalptheChiefs says:

Haha awesome kod, I jus got my little girl her first Bronco jersey too! Good ol number 18. Have to brainwash them early eh bro?

  29. killerkod says:

oh yeah……….if she wants to watch football with her dad, she’d better be cheering for the Broncos! LMAO

You watch, when she’s a teen she’ll rebel by wearing a Faiders jersey! hahahaha

  30. tlcat06 says:

    Kod, she is adorable!!!!

So, I had an awful dream last night that Elway traded Champ to the Colts… 330 in the morning dream. I woke up screaming. Now that I’m awake I realize that somehow Champ was a vampire in my dream and thats so no realistic and John Elway wouldn’t do that to us! Right? He wouldn’t d that to us. I keep telling myself that……….

  31. killerkod says:

    lol@cat…………

When I read he was looking for a vet corner, that was the first name that horribly popped in my head. But then I reassured myself that the orgnization would never let him go like that……………he’ll be a Bronco until he decides to hang them up.

and thanks……….orange def looks good on her! I’ve started to call her lil’von…………I don’t think my wife approves! hahaha

  32. killerkod says:

I keep going to the mail…….anxiously awaiting my broncos prize pack……..but alas, it hasn’t shown up yet. :(

I know it’ll take a while longer to get it up here……….but I’m just so darn excited to have it in my hands!

    SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. killerkod says:

Just read the Grisham has been released…………

  34. tlcat06 says:

LOL that’s so awesome! You’ll have to tell me what’s in it… They’re done giving them out right?

Well I didn’t think of Champ until my dream and I had a terrible time going to sleep. But now I’m like “why would the Broncos help the Colts out? Peyton would be pissed!” so I’m sure he’s not going anywhere. There is no reason for us to trade him and John Elway knows he’s a Bronco HOFer five years after he retires.

  35. tlcat06 says:

Me too, Kod. I’m not surprised that they’re releasing people, but I’m shocked they haven’t released more people.

  36. killerkod says:

I think so…………it was just a training camp thing. I’ll be so happy with whatever’s inside the pack cause I know it’ll be all Broncos and that’s what is AWESOME about it.

And I agree…….why on earth would you tweet something like that before having a deal done……….just to stir the pot?

  37. killerkod says:

I know it’s not really important or crucial………but I want to see Manning throw for at least 1 TD against the 49er’s.

  38. killerkod says:

yah, the hardest cuts are to come after the cardinals game………….coaching staff have some tough decisions looming.

  39. tlcat06 says:

Kod, that’s what the rest of the NFL is thinking. I think he really should be on some medication, Irsay has a screw loose. Even if something comes out of this, it’s ridiculous to do what he’s done. He is obviously not going to get someone of Peyton’s worth so I don’t understand.

They are saying Manning might play less against the 49ers than originally thought. Think he should play into the third quarter if this are going well, I don’t mind if they pull him out if the pass rush is getting to him early though, your thoughts?
