Woodyard Earns Walter Payton Man of the Year

December 15th, 2011 - 9:59am by Stuart Zaas

The Broncos have selected linebacker Wesley Woodyard as their Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award recipient for the second consecutive season. Woodyard was notified of the honor in a team meeting (see above photo) Thursday morning.

The award recognizes a player for outstanding leadership both on the field and in the community.

Woodyard, who is in his fourth consecutive year as a team captain, works to improve the lives of children through his 16Ways foundation and through the NFL Play 60 initiative. He has organized two fundraising events for the foundation – an MVP dinner held at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Denver and his annual toy drive at the Denver Aquarium.

The team will honor Woodyard during Sunday’s game vs. New England, and a $10,000 donation will be made on his behalf to the charities of his choice. Woodyard’s name will be submitted to the NFL for consideration as the national award winner, which is announced during Super Bowl week. That national winner will receive a $25,000 donation to the organization of his choice courtesy of NFL Charities.

Previous Broncos nominees for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award include Champ Bailey (2008-09), cornerback Domonique Foxworth (2007), wide receiver Rod Smith (2006 and ’04), safety John Lynch (2005), linebacker Ian Gold (2003) and wide receiver Ed McCaffrey (2002).

Quarterback John Elway is the only Broncos player to win the national award, which was first given in 1970 and renamed after the Chicago Bears’ Pro Football Hall of Fame running back in 1999.

    Hi TRB and BFE!

    how are you guys today?

  6. killerkod says:

    Way to go Woodyard!

  7. Bronco_Turtle says:

Did you guys see Tebow doing the ‘Elway Pat’ to the football before firing Lasers? I LOVE IT!!!

    :o )

  8. killerkod says:

I don’t care what he does, as long as it equals completions and yardage in the first three quarters………….If there was ever a D to throw against, this would be the one!

  9. killerkod says:

It’s funny how things go in a run of a season…………welcome to the N”if”L!

Just think back to week 1. If we beat the raiders in that game, we go into the bye week at 2-3. Factor in pulling out another W against the Titans and we’d actually be 3-2 going into the bye.

If those were the stats, I don’t see Tebow having a chance at breaking in the line up, and mediocrity of Orton would’ve continued. We would’ve continued to lose games, be in the basement of the AFC, and would never have gone on this crazy emotional rollercoaster ride.

Makes me kinda happy we lost 4 of the first 5 and set the stage for this amazing season!

  10. strandoftds says:

Well here we are at 8-5 and Tim Tebow is 7-1 with 3 games to go, and hindsight being 20/20 I guess we wouldn`t want it any other way.

  11. killerkod says:

it also makes you wonder how the season would’ve turned out if we just started with TT from the beginning and Orton was traded away.

But oh well…………if, if, if, if, if.

No if’s about this one…………we’re leading the AFC west and control our own destiny. A big win this weekend would pretty much cement our road to hosting a wild card game!

    GO BRONCOS!

  12. buck484 says:

    Congrats Woodyard,a most deserved recognition.

  13. shaztah says:

I was just reading on the bleacher report about Orton possibly starting this week. In the article Romeo Crennell was talking about the QB contraversy that he has already experienced before (Quinn or Anderson in Cleveland). I guess Orton can sympathize, only his was WAY bigger.

  14. strandoftds says:

When K.C. comes to Denver in just 3 weekends from now and Orton starts, the fans will boo Orton to no end. I see a smashing win for us on Jan 1. That`ll be a nice way to start off the 2012 year.

  15. killerkod says:

I’m still pinching myself that we actually have a legitimate shot at hosting a wild card game………..

After a 1-4 start and looking at how horrible this team looked at that point, I had flushed the season down the toilet and thought that my season prediction of 7 wins was overly optimistic and almost impossible.

Now, 8 weeks later, we are leading the division with a respectable record and 3 winnable games to go.

    FOX:

Likes- His willingness to change personal based on performance.
His focus on defense and special teams.
    His agressive defenses.

Dislikes: Coaching not to lose offensively.
Complete fear of using the pass to attack the short middle.
His abandonmnt of screens, hooks,& shortcrossing routes.
Fear of the using the no huddle at home(use altitude advantge)
Settling for long kicks late in game, (ask superbowl loser buffalo)
Still telling Tebow to throw ball in dirt, & not publically stating this.

Overall Fox has been good, but if he allows himself to get as agressive on offense as he is on defense then things will really open up. The mike linebacker has been keying on Tebow.. When Tebow rolls out, we need to throw the ball to the area that the linebacker vacated. It’s simple. That’s what they did at UF. SHORT MIDDLE!! When you are playing against a tough defense and throwing deep with no short emergency dump receiver, that is very lame. I know alot of picks are throw in the middle short area, but so what. Let’s roll. If we do the same garbage that we did in the first half against the Bears this week, then we are toast. Time to Man up this week FOX.

Fox mans up this week after reading the Tebow SI and my post.

  18. killerkod says:

Fox is a conservative coach armadillo…………so I don’t expect him to change in the near future. Actually he deserves kudos for adapting as much as he has. I also think he could try and take a few more chances here and there………but turnovers haven’t cost us games, and I’m sure he’ll take that anyday.

I’m sure they’ve been studying tape and devising ways to take advantage of a soft pats D. I’m expecting big games from Decker, Willis (I hope he gets more passes thrown his way) and DT. Play action will be TT’s best friend!

  19. killerkod says:

If Rex Grossman of all people can throw against this D, then TT should be able to have a field day! LOL

  20. tnalen66 says:

Joke: Tom Brady, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Patriots flag in the window. “This house is yours for eternity Tom, said God. “This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here.” Tom felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house.

On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just aroun……d the corner. It was a huge 3-story mansion with Orange and Blue sidewalks and drive ways, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous Broncos logo flag waving, a swimming pool in shape of a horse, a Broncos logo in every window, and a Tim Tebow jersey on the front door.

Tom looked at God and said “God, I’m not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I won 3 Super Bowls, and I even went to the Hall of Fame.”

God said “So what’s your point Tom?”

“Well, why does Tim Tebow get a better house than me?”

God chuckled, and said “Tom, that’s not Tim’s house, it’s mine.”

  21. Bronco_Turtle says:

:o ) That was really good… I’d not heard that before!

    Thanks for sharing

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA that was fantastic Tnalen66, I was waiting for the punch line cuz all along I thought that was Tims house but when I found out it wasn’t … that was just too funny and perfect. God not only a Bronco fan but a Tebow fan … hilarious. TRB

  25. armadillo_orton says:

KillerKod, Ijust dreaming….. Bye the way, I love Willis and I would like him to get Royal’s snaps.

  26. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Royal lost all his mojo … sad really. At least he still got his Special Teams Mojo. TRB

  27. daddybronc says:

The blogs sure seem a bit subdued. Buck-up Bronco Country!!! This is our year!

    who woulda thunk it?

I’ve already decided to take the approach that if the Broncos don’t beat the PATS this time around – no problem…we get them again in the playoffs! Good teams often split games – but the better team wins in the tourney!!!

I just happen to think that Broncos have the superior lines on offense and defense and in the end – the battles are won in the trenches. I’m still thinking that Broncos can win out the regular season. I’m thinking that the wildcard game will be more difficult than the divisional round. AFC championship game is gonna be a war no matter who gets there. And Green Bay looks unbeatable – it’ll take an act of God!!!

    Enjoy the Ride!!!

THIS JUST IN! Tim Tebow is not the perfect human being after all.

I know you’re shocked to hear this. We all are.

So was Chicago Bears corner Charles Tillman, who caught a lick of trash talk from Tebow during the Denver Broncos’ thrilling 13-10 overtime victory in Week 14 of the 2011 NFL Season.

According to Pro Football Talk, Tebow told Tillman his first-quarter pick was “lucky” in a quick conversation that was picked up by the NFL Network’s microphones:

“You’re lucky. You’re lucky to get one.”

Tillman turned toward Tebow and asked, “What did you say?”

“I said you’re lucky, man,” Tebow said. “Lucky, lucky. You know that, too, man.”

    Total votes: 341

Which raises two important questions about the impeccable Tebow:

    1) Is his heart not actually pure through and through? Is Timmy Terrific capable of verbal jibes, of rubbing his opponents the wrong way?

    2) What’s this “luck” he’s speaking of? I thought Tebow was all about divine intervention!

Valid concerns, of course, but the real lesson here is that Tebow is, in fact, human. Sure, he happens to be a human who, by most accounts, is incredibly affable, giving, caring and genuine, albeit whose religious fervor many football fans find off-putting.

But still, he’s human, capable of even the most frivolous of follies.

You know, like saying two different things in two separate settings about the same incident.

After the game, Tebow changed his tune somewhat about Tillman being just the second person to intercept him all season:

“That interception Charles Tillman had was a great play — you know, bad decision on my part, which I can’t have, and got to improve. But that was a great play.”

To be fair, Tebow’s duplicity in this case is more than likely a simple function of his competitive spirit manifesting itself more on the football field than in the press room. Tebow’s piety apparently doesn’t get in the way of him playing head games with his opponents in the midst of battle.

Next thing you know, Tebow will be crediting Denver’s victories to luck (which he probably should) rather than the grace and glory of a higher power…

    Or not.

IDK what these people are thinking. That’s the most friendly, wholesome “trash talk” I’ve ever heard!! It is bordering on ridiculous how far some people stretch to find something bad to say about Tebow. LOL

  30. 1980nmbronco says:

    Congrats to WW!!

  31. daddybronc says:

    1980 – Classic!!!

In his book TT hammers himself pretty hard for some of this ‘in your face’ type of stuff. Makes me laugh! LOL

  32. denver0723 says:

1980nmbronco, Yeah if you saw the NFL replay with Tebow wired, you could see him laughing about it and joking about it with Tillman. I would hardly consider it trash talk. He was laughing the whole time about it. People will do anything to take words out of context haha.

  33. daddybronc says:

Sndvl – a lot of us worried about you for a long time. Nice to have you on board! Your prediction still indicates you haven’t imbibed near enough orange drink. Haha LOL

  34. daddybronc says:

I still think that INT was not a bad pass. I think Willis fell down. Um…that is luck for Bears unless we think God is on the field tripping folks. LOL

  35. 1980nmbronco says:

I thought that article was pretty funny. I just saw that Dawk and Goody were practicing today!! That is good news, I was already having nightmares about Moore trying to arm tackle Gronk before he ripped off a 40 YAC TD!! I don’t think Dawk will let him get away with anything like that!!

New England Patriots (10-3) at Denver Broncos (8-5)

Poof. There it goes. Teblowed up. The way I see this game is that New England’s going to get a good lead early, and Tim Tebow is going to have to play well early to keep the Broncos in it. And that is not Tebow’s game. Maybe it will be Sunday, magically. But in a battle of four-quarter quarterbacks, give me Brady — even against a tough D like Denver’s.

Maybe he was all out of “God Bless”es … but if he did … no shocker here. He is human. Prone to frustration and fiery on the field. I watched the SFX but I didn’t here that … maybe I wasn’t payign attention … heard on the game and on sfx right after the game last night … ill give it a listen later when I get off work. But just more fodder to hate him or love him for the media. besides … the site that said this is still calling that random guy Tebows pastor … after the guy clearly said I am not Tebows pastor. TRB

TRB – it wasn’t an in your face at all. It was a good natured ‘haha – you got one over on me.’ Somebody is trying to make something out of nothing. Makes me feel like it’s a courtroom. All deception and innuendo.

  42. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Oh so you heard it too daddybronc … man i totally need to relisten to it … not that its that important or anything.

Glad to hear the vets are practicing again …. we will need em against our best aerial threat this year since Tebow’s started.

  43. daddybronc says:

Oh yeah – they have portions of the game being played here on the Bronco site – also on NFL.COM.

  44. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Lol sounds like it DB … many have been waiting for him to do something out of character and hypocritical … he aint done it yet. So they will take what they can get … its annoying when a Christian talks the talk and walks it cuz many are used to meeting christians that act holier than thou and are hypocrites … these days man even associate hypocricy with Christianity … so they just waiting for Tebow to punch someone, get some one pregnant, rape someone ala roethlisberger, or kill puppies ala mike vick or something … but nope … he is walking it and it makes people mad. 45. daddybronc says:

Yesterday was a great day bowling. I’ve broken 200 a lot over the years, but yesterday was the first time I have ever broken 200 twice in a 3 game series. Any of you young bucks that do it all the time – well – good for you. But it was a milestone for me in my declining years. LOL (My hip and knee get giving me fits and so 3rd game was a 149 – oh well)

Then last night I the family was visiting friends. This friend is a camp director at a kids camp. We played paint – ball for 3 hours. It was 35 degrees when we started and 22 degrees when we finished. The paint doesn’t freeze because there is oil in there – but a lot of the balls weren’t breaking and they were hard. Today I am hurting and welted all over.

Hoping softball gets rescheduled again tonight – I’m feeling a great deal “old” today!

    Enjoying the Ride!!!

  46. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Nice … I love bowling … but I dont get to do it often .. but I doubt I have broken 200.

Now paintballing I love … im actually doing it this friday and yes the paint doesn’t freeze but the balls don’t break at times … its like getting pelted by stones lol. Also makes it harder to know if u shot someone and if they should be out. I have a gun my self …wit a c02 tank so it doesn’t do well in the cold. So im not sure if i will use it this weekend … depends on whether I suppose. looking forward to it tho. Its been months.

My father in law is in his 80′s but he is a HOF bowling coach at some level for the Idaho Broncos. He keeps me and my kids bowling regular and doing it right. His hips are far worse than mine so he kicks me in the butt. He still beats me whenever he feels like it – humility is good! My high score was a flukey 267. I am going to retire my ball if I can just get one 300 game. I don’t like it like I do softball.

  48. daddybronc says:

My kids love the paintball and there seems to be something cool about ‘lighting him up!’, from the perspective of my kids. I’m trying to enjoy it, but today it just seems dumb. Why would I do that? I was supposed to be on a fishing charter today!!!

Way too much playing going on – we are pretty much shut down until the New Year. Wish I had some money. LOL

  49. daddybronc says:

I wanted to express appreciation to Bay. (He may not like me much. We do approach life from different perspectives, so that is way OK with me. I don’t care if he hates my off topic posts – it’s a free country! and blog.) But I have gotten to where Bay’s morning postings are one of the first things I read each day. I always want more. I know a lot of the stuff is copied and pasted – but I don’t have the knowledge of where to look for all the stuff that he regularly posts. Kudos Bay!!! You take a lot of shots here so I thought it appropriate to give a high five.
