Who’s No. 1?

December 1st, 2010 - 2:55pm by Gabe Hiatt

In one corner, wearing red trunks with yellow trim, we have the NFL’s leader in touchdown receptions. In the other corner, wearing white trunks with blue trim, stands the league leader in receiving yards.

For the second time this season, two pass-catching heavyweights will attempt to outperform each other as Dwayne Bowe and the Chiefs host Brandon Lloyd and the Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

Both receivers scored two touchdowns in the Chiefs’ Week 10 loss to the Broncos in Denver.

Bowe’s 14 touchdown catches put him in first place in the NFL in that category by three scores. He’s notched 13 of those touchdowns in the past seven weeks.

“Bowe has become as big a play receiver as there could possibly be in the league,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “On third down last week, he had seven catches — all first downs. He has been a big red-zone target for them as well, so (we have) a lot of things to deal with on their offense.”

The Chiefs will have to deal with Lloyd, who is one of only two receivers to have surpassed 1,000 receiving yards this season.

His 1,122-yard total through the air is a league best, and he’s one of five receivers tied for third place with 9 touchdown receptions.

“I have a lot of confidence in (Lloyd) and he proves me right 75 percent of the time,” Kyle Orton said. “He makes great plays, makes spectacular catches.”

On Sunday, chances are both teams will look for explosive plays from their top receivers. Bowe and Lloyd both average more than 15 yards per catch for the season.

Thanks in part to the dynamic receivers, Orton and Matt Cassel are tossing up numbers that pace the league in the passing game.

The Broncos signal-caller is back in the lead with 3,370 passing yards — eight more than Philip Rivers — and Cassel has only thrown four interceptions, the same number as his former teammate, Tom Brady.

After scrutinizing the stat sheet, McDaniels voiced his respect for the quarterback-wide receiver combo in Kansas City.

“I think the last three or four games Dwayne Bowe has had the best stretch of any receiver in NFL history. One out of every four catches is a touchdown,” McDaniels said. “Cassel is one of only four quarterbacks ever to have 22 (touchdowns) and four (interceptions) at this point in the year.”

“There is every superlative that you could use in the last seven or eight weeks here in terms of where they stand in their passing offense and how explosive it has become.”

Sounds like we are going to be in for some aerial fireworks.

But I honestly would be more worried about that Moeki TE of theirs since Bailey will be assigned to Bowe and TE’s have been killing us like last game against the Rams and Dawkins is out.

  2. baylinorcrush says:

    Moeaki.

  3. broncos20 says:

very true Bay, TE coverage always been a weakness. Last week there wasnt enough pressure on their QB. THis needs to change this week!

    BLloyd = ‘Human-hightlight reel’..

I find it interesting how bloggs are flying in by the hour…

  4. Danso says:

Erika was telling what she was thankful for on the prior blog. I am thankful that our next three games are on the road so the team doesn’t have to listen to hometown fans booing. I attend a couple games a year to watch the Bronocos, a couple of Boise State Broncos and four or five Utah Jazz games. I have never booed any of the teams I follow. Of course I never leave a game early either. I stay for every play. A lot of fans missed what could have been a huge comeback and finish last week. Go TEAM BRONCOS!

  5. Broncosfolife88 says:

You know what woulda helped the pressure this season was Doom. He is definately a fan favorite. They should have him come on an do a blob one day.

  6. Broncosfolife88 says:

    *blog* lol

  7. strandoftds says:

    DITTO!

  8. baylinorcrush says:

Lloyd is officially Spiderman in my book, courtesy of Gruden Monday night football against the Chargers.

Talking about Gruden, he did have a meeting with University of Miami today but told them he didn’t want to take it any further, so he obviously has interest in coaching, but not for the U.

  9. Broncosfolife88 says:

Gruden would be a step up for defense I say we sign him at DC this team would tear it up.
Love the Spiderman name fits so well actually. By the way how crazy has Lloyd been this year I cant believe the way he is tearing it up.

  10. Yovi21 says:

Well I hope B Lloyd has a better day than Bowe, in other words GO CHAMP!!! I know this is random, but I just got done watching some of Knowshon’s college hi-lights and I have to say I am impressed. I hope that someday he can have that kind of production with the Broncos! The same goes for the other college superstars we have on the team: Tebow, Thomas, Decker,Cox, AYERS haha. Good luck this week, if we come to play this week this could be a great game!

    GO BRONCOS!!!
P.S. McD if you want to keep your job start to prove us fans wrong; win this week, win next week, win the week after that and so on.

  11. Yovi21 says:

and do it without cheating hahaha

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, week seven I came up here and laid up his #s and showed how he could possibly go up to top 5 receiving yards in a season, it looks like maybe top ten now since he has slowed down a bit. But by example Marshall’s best is like 1265 or so and Lloyd already has 1122 with 5 games to go!!!!

  13. baylinorcrush says:

    Rice is 1st with 1848

    Holt 5th with 1696

    Moss 10th with 1632

Lloyd could be right in there.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

Marshall’s #s put him at #156 all time, LOL. Go Lloyd, Go SPIDERMAN.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

That’s definitely one of the thing I look forward to see in the rest of the season, and before the season I thought Gaffney would be #1, hahaha.

  16. Broncosfolife88 says:

You know I never liked Gaffney something about that dude dont sit right with me, I mean sure he is talented and all but I dont know he seams a little off to me. Course hears to him proving me wrong lol.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

And I don’t like McD, that’s because they are both from N-E, LOL.

  18. strandoftds says:

Moments ago the NFL Network reported that Jon Gruden is not interested in the Miami Hurricanes job. They stated that he is interesting in going back to being a HC in the NFL again. The word is that he is waiting for the right oppertunity and might have a few teams to choose from for 2011. We shall see come the off season.

  19. Broncosfolife88 says:

Ya but heres the thing McD makes more sense to me thats why Im a fan. My love for the Broncos aside I really think McD is a good coach, he just needs a little time to put things in order. Seriously what were we expecting from this season? I knew it would be ruff but thats the thing you gotta get through the ruff to make it in the NFL, the ruff sets you up to be a competitor. Thats why I come on here and try to make my points. Thats why I’m saddend by whats happening with the fans, because McDaniel’s has what it takes to get it right here.

  20. Broncosfolife88 says:

Thats why I laugh at the Kool Aid jokes, because I look at McD from a standpoit outside of being a Broncos Fan. And make no mistake I am first and foremost a broncos fan, but I am also a football fan period.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

A pro McD fan arguing with an anti McD fan has no chance of getting us anywhere, so I’ll leave it at that, and by now you should know exactly why I feel the way I do about McD since I have posted 357 posts about it and they are more or less all justifiable, at least to me and probably 90% of the fans, you are in the very small minority 88, it is what it is.

  22. Broncosfolife88 says:

And it do what it does Bay at least we can agree on one thing right

    GO BRONCOS

  23. baylinorcrush says:

Real sad story in the DP just came out about McKinley’s gambling money troubles that led to his suicide.

  24. strandoftds says:

Ya, I heard it an hour ago on 850 KOA. It breaks my heart. I wish he would have reached out to someone. Anyone. RIP Kenny.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, Rod Smith had 1602 receiving yards in 2000 and rates 12th all time. Here is something to shoot for Lloyd, the most receiving yards in a season for a Bronco ever.

  26. baylinorcrush says:

He did, but it seems as if everyone just brushed it off and moved on, there were signs.

  27. caramelloo says:

I’m kind of shocked at the play of Bowe. He was a sometime player when he was here at LSU. Sometimes he would wow you, and sometimes he would just drive you insane bc of his lack of effort. I guess he is finally growing up.

I tell you one thing though, the KC Chiefs are starting to look like the LSU chiefs or the SEC Chiefs. They have about 5 or 6 guys in their starting lineup from the SEC.

  28. royalbroncofan1 says:

Good point caramello – actually quite a few players in the AFC West from the SEC.

  29. caramelloo says:

Thanks royal and you’re right bc the Chargers and Raiders have a bunch as well. I think that is one of the things that has helped the Chiefs gel together this year. The SEC guys have played with or against each other and they kind of know each others tendencies.

On to our WR’s Lloyd and Gaf. The difference between the two from what I’ve seen this year is…… Lloyd keeps working even when he isn’t getting the ball. While Gaf tends to fade away when he isn’t getting the ball. He gets the Marshallitis (Inflamation of the ego) it usually occurs when a guy isn’t getting the ball as much as he THINKS he should. As a result he kind of pouts without really showing it, but you can see it by looking at his lack of effort.

  30. royalbroncofan1 says:

Chiefs are young but have some great Team speed. Not looking forward the “fingergate” rematch this weekend, but I’ll definitely tune in…lol.

Lloyd sure is having a great year. He does work hard running his routes and selling the D that the ball may be coming his way, even when it does not. It was good to see Eddie getting some late action last week, as they usually don’t call his # late in the game.

  31. Crazyhorserider says:

Firstly about Kenny McKinley, may he rest in peace. Gambling is a big problem with sports stars and I just hope the Broncos recognise this and have somebody looking out for the players in future. Not that I blame them but I want all the players to know that help is available for addictive behaviour.

As for this stats blog I find it all very misleading. Yards can easily be gained if your opponents give them to you. It is scoring and winning that matters. A better guide is the amount of yards made after a reception which points to the elusiveness of the receiver and his game winning capabilities.

However it is a team game and all records depend on the team performance as much as an individuals performance.

Unfortunately however good Brandon is doesn’t take away from the fact that the team is in a dire position and the overall performances of the team are not good enough for the Broncos. The fans deserve so much better.

  32. royalbroncofan1 says:

Yes we do deserve more but not much to cheer for this year as obviously the “Team” isn’t doing good a whole so we’re just recognizing the “small stuff”….lol.

  33. caramelloo says:

I hear what you’re saying but in this dark time we are in….. Lloyd is one of few bright spots.

  34. footballMANIAC says:

How do we have the top passer in the lead but are 4th in passing yards per game?

  35. socalbigbroncofan says:

I really beleive we can get Gruden. but in order to do that we need to get rid of mcd. its coming real soon. i feel it and i know gruden is looking at denver just like the rest of us waiting for mr. b to make it right. and gruden and tebow will be a great hc and qb for many years. ITS TEBOW TIME. GO BRONCOS.

  36. sndvl says:

What I don’t understand, from the proMcD group, is what evidence suggests McD will be a good coach? Where is it? Because he came from the NE tree? Because he understands the intricacies and nuances of the game? Because his father is a highly successful coach? Is it his draft classes? Free agent acquisitions? The trades? His knack for personnel evaluation?
Or, could it be because of his ‘potential’? I want facts, evidence, even small things like maturity.
Idk, there’s nothing I can do about it. Or can I?
I’ve got a Benjamin and so does my brother. By my count, we only need 59,996 more donations!

  37. caramelloo says:

Fact: Not one Bill Belichick assistant has had success! Even Charlie Weis couldn’t make it in college at Notre Dame.

Fact: It takes two Belichick assistants combined to do what one couldn’t do and that it succeed. All we have to do is look at this weeks Broncos opponent for prove.

  38. casinoroyal19 says:

I agree with socal 100%. I watched every episode of that gruden qb camp thing on espn and he seemed to like tebow the most. You could tell he was salivating at the thought of coaching with him. You have to think he would love to coach here. He would have so many young weapons. Idk, it may be just wishful thinking but every time I watch mnf I think about gruden being our coach. Does that happen to anyone else? Lol

  39. samurai713 says:

Go Broncos!!! Brandon’s year is as good as it is because Orton looks for him, sometimes even when he’s not exactly open. That said they are playing really well given the circumstances they’ve been put in. Pro-bowl would be likely if on any other team, but idk if they can get in with our record and all the drama.

  40. BeastFromEast92 says:

Gruden coaching Tebow, and the guy knows Defense too!

    My Christmas list:

    1.Clean house
    2.Hire a new GM
    3.Hire John Gruden as HC
    4.Hire a new DC
    5.Trade Orton and start Tebow.
    6.Use the Draft on D-E-F-E-N-S-E!!!!!!!

  41. jeoronia says:

So everyone wants Gruden and get rid of McD but tell me this how will Bowlen pay for three HC. He still owe Shanny and now will owe McD two more years. Just that is about 17 mil Shanny 10 and Mcd 7 not going to happen sorry dudes. I dont think the Broncos get a HC for Xmas. only way is if Elway buys part of the Broncos

  42. jeoronia says:

the only way for Bowlen to get out of what he owes is to fire McD for cause. We all have good cause. This is what Bowlen sould say to day I have kicked out HC McD for cause BECAUSE he made my team a dumpster fire and sent them to the crapper. that is all i have for today

  43. milehighmagic88 says:

The thing is, $3 million is not that much for an NFL owner to pay. At least it shouldn’t be that much. It’s impossible to own a multi-billion dollar sports franchise if you aren’t willing to dish out an extra few million to make up for mistakes every once in a while.

  44. BeastFromEast92 says:

The way I figure it,if Mr.B don’t fire McD he will lose more than that in revenues, just saying.
You can’t keep a guy that has done what he has to this team just because of money, the fan base is already shrinking, that means less revenue from merchandise sales and ticket sales, the money he has made from Tebow alone would buy out McD’s contract.Hell trade a player or 2 to free up some cash and give it to McD,and send him packing.God knows we have plenty of players that don’t earn their money anyway.

    BFE

  45. milehighmagic88 says:

To clarify, McD is making about $3 million a year. I know paying three coaches will be more than that. But that’s my point. If you aren’t willing to buck up and spend some extra millions to get the job done every once in a while, then you shouldn’t be an NFL owner.

I know I’m not an expert on Bowlen’s personal financial situation, so don’t mistake me for being judgmental. But the unfortunate thing about being an NFL owner is you better have a lot of money for times lie these. That’s the whole reason normal guys lie me can’t own a team.

  46. milehighmagic88 says:

    I mean times LIKE these

My ‘K’ button isn’t really working for some reason. I have to press extra hard. lol

  47. jeoronia says:

Big name coaches what to win now. So a big name coach to the Broncos might not work. If the Broncos are to get rid of McD they sould go after a great DC not a good one a great one . The first thing is a GM that does he job then the GM will get the HC. So Dungy for GM that is start

  48. Yovi21 says:

Ha, I don’t like what is happening here, but I had a thought. I say that if we can find someone who is a better option or more qualified as a HC than McD (Gruden) then fire McD pronto! If not then give McD another crack at it and see if he finally has the hang of it, but what I’m trying to say is, I don’t want to rush into another question mark coach and start this whole process over again. If Denver plans to get out of this slump they need to grab someone who has experience in winning AS A HEAD COACH!

GO BRONCOS, did Parcells leave Miami?

  49. baylinorcrush says:

And to clarify further Jeronia, we are only in for 3.5 mil for Shanny next year (and 3.5 mil this year), not 10 mil!?!?!

And McD is 4 yr 12 mil, how do you get to 10 mil!?!?! Fact is he has two years to go and under 7 mil left in his contract.

Point is you should check your facts before stating things dude, around 10 mil between the two doesn’t look anything like 17 mil, just saying.

  50. baylinorcrush says:

Yovi, this is where things are at with Parcells as of two days ago:

In October, Parcells’ suddenly walked out. He turned over total control to General Manager Jeff Ireland, cleaned out his desk and retreated to the golf courses and horse tracks neighboring his home in Jupiter, Fla.

Cynics suggested that Parcells sensed that his team never was going to reach his expectations and bailed out to leave the daily headaches behind. The other feeling is that Parcells believed the organization was in good hands and he wanted to make a clean break to contemplate his next career move.

“One thing about Coach Parcells,” said Harvey Greene, the Dolphins’ senior vice president of media relations and long-time sports public relations expert. “I think you can’t predict anything in terms of long-term plans with him. Right now, we’re operating with him still being affiliated with the club.

“He still communicates on a regular basis with Jeff and [coach] Tony [Sparano]. He’s still being paid and he’s still part of the organization. The work he’s doing, he can do from home or other locations. He looks at tapes of our games and other games. He wasn’t involved in the coaches meetings when he was here. It was more of working with Jeff on personnel.”
