Weight Gain

April 3rd, 2012 - 2:42pm by Stuart Zaas

Broncos defensive tackle Mitch Unrein walked into the club’s weight room for an offseason workout with new Strength and Conditioning Coach Luke Richesson when he discovered that his routine was going to change.

Unbeknownst to Unrein, Richesson was in the process of completely overhauling the team’s weight room, replacing nearly all of the old equipment with brand new machines.

That reminded the second-year player of another weight room that needed to be revamped.

Unrein had been planning a fundraiser to help improve the weight room at Eaton High School — his alma mater. He originally hoped to replace one piece of equipment each year, but with the timing of the Broncos’ redesign, a bigger opportunity presented itself.

“I was like, ‘I wonder what they’re doing with that stuff, I wonder if I could buy it second-hand from them or something,’ Unrein said. “So, I went up and talked to (Broncos Vice President of Operations) Chip (Conway) and Chip said, ‘No, we’re actually donating that stuff.’ I said, ‘Oh, really?’ I told him my situation with my high school and everything and he said that they’d be willing to donate some stuff to my high school.”

And just like that, Eaton High School received entirely new equipment for its weight room, which it desperately needed.

“We literally took everything out of my high school weight room. It was all just junk – if you’d have seen that stuff, you’d have said, ‘I can’t believe kids are lifting with this stuff,’” Unrein recalled. “It was unreal the old stuff that we had. I think it was like 1970s stuff.”

Unrein, along with volunteers from the Broncos and Eaton High School, hired a moving truck and transported the machines, weight plates, squat racks and benches from Dove Valley 80 miles north to the school.

He said that he could feel the positive effect of the new equipment on students before the new gear was even in place.

“When we were bringing that stuff in, we had a lot of the faculty, the staff, a bunch of students were down there just watching us set it up,” he said. “It was a huge thing for the school and I hope it motivates kids in sports.”

Even with the new weight room fully set up, Unrein still plans to hold the fundraiser and will use proceeds to help underprivileged kids in the community who can’t afford their sports fees or the new sporting gear.

“In any sport, you can benefit from lifting weights and working out and stuff like that,” he said. “Even if kids aren’t in sports, I hope it sparks a little fire in them to start working out at a young age.”

I think an email to blog admin is in order! lol

I’m not sure why I didn’t pick a name relating to the broncos……killerkod is just something I’ve used for a long, long time. Was thinking of changing it but I didn’t want to have to go through telling everyone I changed it……..lol

If I were to change it, I would have the handle magnificent7.

  5. killerkod says:

champbrandon……….I think you’re the official pup of the blog………lol

Lol same for me with gami3it. I use it for most media stuff like sites and games and etc. I finally got a name related to the broncos and I lose em. Never good to name after current players. Luckily TRB has taken on a name of its self and the royal beast was obscure enough to begin with lol.

does anyone know how to change the username? I made it last summer, forgot it, and then remembered. It was created when I actually LIKED Brandon “Selfish Ball-Hog” Lloyd.

  10. killerkod says:

you could keep it and say it’s for stokely………he just might be a bronco again before the season starts………….lmao

I don’t think you change it…………you just create a new account.

If we draft a DT in the 1st round, I would like it to be either Dontari Poe if he actually falls to us since his draft stock is falling or Kendall Reyes. I do not want Devon Still since he forgets that he is trying to win a football game or Jerel Worthy since, though he likes football a little better, he also forgets that he has a football game to win. Maybe we go with Janoris Jenkins to learn under Champ and get his life straightened out. If we go for WRs in the draft, we should just go get Wallace. If we want a receiver in the 1st and don’t want to pay for Wallace, then I want Hill.

TRB I used the yellow and brown ones in Madden a lot too. I think my W-L record with them was terrible, and the guys would always say “what are you using them ugly uniforms for?” haha, Now that Tebow is gone my yellow Champ jersey is definitely my favorite one hanging in my closet, thinking of alternate uses for my orange orton one… hey, it was a gift… haha.

  13. champbrandon2484 says:

thanks KK. I do not want Stokely. I do not want any other FA WR other than Wallace. If we go WR in first round, just do Hill.

  14. killerkod says:

They’re asking like 30 bucks for left over Orton Jerseys in the NFL Shop………lol I bet there’s like a warehouse full of them and I wouldn’t even pay a penny for one.

  15. killerkod says:

I agree…….stokely is too old but also, the price for wallace is just way too steep………I think our receiving corps is pretty decent as it stands now.

  16. champbrandon2484 says:

Man i hate this password thing. they know it is me since i JUST posted. I forgot what I was going to write because I wrote it in the password box.

    ILMSDB!!!!!

  17. champbrandon2484 says:

This is not what I was going to post, but Bucky Brooks from nfl.com has us taking Lamar Miller with the 25th pick.

“John Fox might elect to address defensive tackle at this pick, but adding a feature back is sensible, considering the age of Willis McGahee and non-existent production of Knowshon Moreno. Miller is an explosive runner capable of doing damage on the perimeter, and his ability to attack the edges will alleviate some of the pressure on Peyton Manning in the pocket.”

This made some sense, but now that the X in EFX has given Noshow a vote of confidence, this pick makes no sense anymore.

  18. killerkod says:

I haven’t been much of a Noshow supporter since he joined the broncos………he’s been too injury prone and could never seem to convert those third and shorts. He’s had flashes of potential but they’re always over-shadowed by the negative.

I’m willing to give him one last chance and hope he stays healthy for the year cause I believe he could be a nice compliment to McGahee’s power running game. Also, with PM the screen game opens up and he can catch on the outside, where he’s naturally more dangerous.

  19. killerkod says:

No doubt this would be the year he tears it up and leaves as a free agent next season……………lol

  20. champbrandon2484 says:

KK, is it just you and me now?

  21. killerkod says:

looks like it, for now…………sometimes there’s such a major lull on the blog and then at times it’s hard to keep up! lol

  22. champbrandon2484 says:

no one else has posted since 9:51.

  23. champbrandon2484 says:

If anyone else is looking on, please start posting about something. it is getting awfully boring here.

  24. champbrandon2484 says:

    So, killerkod, are you pro-Tebow and anti-Manning, pro-Manning and anti-Tebow, anti-Tebow and anti-Manning, or pro-Tebow and pro-Manning?

  25. VonDoomBroncos says:

Darn I didn’t want to be the youngest and my wish was fulfilled, lol.

I wouldn’t mind us taking Stephen Hill or Doug Martin first round if EFX really thinks it will help us “win now!” DT is so deep in this draft that even guys being taken in the third round can be immediate starters for us.. and not even out of necessity

  26. DenverOrange says:

any word on if B dawk is coming back?

  27. killerkod says:

    I’m PRO-BRONCOS all the way!

I supported TT when he was a bronco, as painful as it was at times to watch……….but I shed no tears upon his departure. I’m not a huge fan of him as a QB.

I’m super stoked to have Manning……….cause I strongly believe that a PM at 50% is still better than TT at 110% at this point. Let the lambasting begin………lol

If PM is where he was before his surgery and can stay healthy, then I have no reason to believe our team is better off.

  28. killerkod says:

Must be a tough decision for Dawk……..he’s paid his dues but hasn’t won a championship yet………..

I’m sure he’s weighing the options and thinking about his health. And I’m sure he doesn’t want to play if he can’t contribute the way he wants to.

  29. DenverOrange says:

surley we will know this month so we can be ready for the Draft

TRB, thanks for being proud of us “old geezers.” Just so you know though, I’ve had a computer since 1984, not too long after the first PC’s came out, but I first started working with those enormous, room sized ones in the 70′s, punch cards and all. Things have certainly changed since then, but I’ve always been sort of a “techie.” Those big 5.25 floppy discs are laughable now….gone the way of the 8-track stereo and rotary dial phone. Heck, I even remember when I was a child and the operator would come on the phone when you picked it up, and say “number please.”

Yep, it’s been a slow news week, but I’ve been neck deep in entredeux, French lace, Swiss Embroideries, and Bearissima cotton batiste all week, working on my granddaughter’s Easter dress. It’s a time honored tradition in the South, for mothers and grandmothers to make handmade dresses for their little girls, and button on suits or jon jons for little boys, for all special occasions, from bringing baby home from the hospital gowns and Christening gowns, all the way to white heirloom graduation dresses and wedding gowns….although the latter is largely a purchased gown for many.

LOL, I’m sure you guys could have done without that little tidbit of information, but that’s why I haven’t been on, and won’t be on much for awhile, because next week, I have to finish our income taxes, and those of several family members. We always seem to wait until the last couple of weeks every year, but none of us are in a rush to send a check to the IRS too far ahead of time.

Anyway, you guys have a great week, and I hope the Easter Bunny is good to all of you. Happy Easter, everybody!
