Wednesday Practice Report

July 29th, 2009 - 1:05pm by Chris Gentilviso

Wednesday’s practice came to a close with the Broncos completing an hour-long session chock full of different drills and installments.

Brandon Marshall, Lucas Taylor and D.J. Williams missed the morning session. Head Coach Josh McDaniels said it was due to residual soreness.

Here are some quick hits from Wednesday:

  • Brandon Stokley was at camp early for a second day in a row. His son, sporting a Carmelo Anthony Nuggets jersey Tuesday, wore an Eddie Royal jersey on Wednesday. Chad Jackson and Lonie Paxton were a few of the players spotted walking around Dove Valley today.
  • Linebackers coach Don Martindale had Wesley Woodyard and Lee Robinson working on goal-line stands, with each rotating between the tight end and linebacker position.
  • Marquez Branson, Richard Quinn, Seth Olsen, Blake Schlueter and Stanley Bryant rotated through several 3-on-2 blocking drills, under the watchful eye of coaches Clancy Barone and Rick Dennison.
  • Nate Swift and Kenny McKinley worked with wide receivers coach Adam Gase on establishing a first step in the slot position.
  • The quarterbacks spent most of the morning working on three- and five-step drops on a variety passing routes. Kyle Orton, Chris Simms and Tom Brandstater worked with a mix of wide receivers and tight ends.
  • Below are photos from the session.

i have a feeling Rulon Davis is going to be great!!

    2. broncofan96 says:

I think Woodyard is going to be a great linebacker for us

    3. broncs55 says:

I’m excited about Rulon myself, he seems like a hard nosed work horse!

    4. WEEBSY13 says:

Let’s hope that “residual injury” isn’t Marshall being a punk.

    5. Dr. Doom says:

I think the entire defense will be great. The D-line worries me though. We need to find a Legit Nose Tackle. Also Orton from what I’ve heard looks great in camp, lets hope he wins a lot of games for us.

    6. 07elway says:

haha, yeah that “injury” just seems a little too convenient for Marshall. Its almost too ironic he’s having problems already. It could be true that he really has some soreness but with the way he’s been acting… just too weird.

    7. TonyTZ7 says:

About that Nose Tackle, Keep an eye on Baker I think he we all might be pleasantly surprised. And as for B-Marsh it does sound mighty fishy.

    8. broncs55 says:

I agree with TonyTZ7. Baker seems like a beast to be reckoned with. He has shown bursts of good stuff in the past, he just needs to be properly motivated.

If he can anchor down that position, our defense will be in the top 15. With our ambient offense, if it is as good as what I am expecting it to be (which we would score a lot more with less turnovers than last year) we could go deep in the playoffs, heck, we could do what Arizona did last year, make a run for the big one!

      Lets get excited Bronco fans!

    9. eeerockski says:

Ronald Fileds and Chris Baker aren’t Albert Haynesworth, but they are big strong bodies who can get the job done. I hope if we DO trade Marshall, we can trade him to NYG or Balti for Ngata or another big boy. That would help, but I truly hope we keep him around for years to come. I think our d-line is gonna be fine. Better than last year, actually, although that aint saying much.

    10. meisner says:

Chris Baker is a rookie defensive lineman from Hampton University who joined the Broncos as a college free agent on April 27, 2009… Totaled 69 tackles (32 solo), 8.5 sacks (60 yds.) and one blocked kick in 11 games

      those are REALLY good number

    11. broncs55 says:

      meisner,

Very true, and thats why I’m excited about him as well. However, we will see how quickly he can mold. Everytime you jump a level, you are approached by the vets with better skills than what you have seen in the past, which present quicker reaction times, ability to fire off the ball faster, and more strength and know how.

IF Baker can develop in a short period and quickly transition to the NFL, he will have a great year. He has one heck of an offensive line to go against. That should help him develop as when it comes game time, he probably won’t see the same offensive line talent that the Broncos have.

I for one will be thrilled to see him perform!

      eeerockski:

I agree, I would love to get Ngata as well. I’ve heard rumors that Baltimore is interested in Marshall, but I’m sure not that interested for a trade such as that.

Personally, Marshall can ride the pine or get traded, I don’t believe it would affect our offense that much as our stable of receivers will put up good numbers with or without him.

IF Marshall can keep his nose clean, I have no problem with him. IF he can’t, as he’s shown in the past, I’d be surprised if he makes it through the year on this team!

    12. LBWilson56 says:

Meisner:I agree with u..R Daviseems like someone who has alot to prove and im betting he will be a great asset to the defense…
07Elway:Im with u,how convenient that Marshall is having a injury problem right now..i think he’s setting up his “sitting out”crap until his contract gets worked out,traded..or whatever…

    13. TheRoyalBeast says:

Come on yall, it wasnt only marshall that sat out for soreness, 2 others did with him and it makes sense since him and DJ both underwent surgery. All I am praying is that the soreness is gone when it is time to play in the regular season (if he plays for us which seems definite because we wont trade him for chicken scratch). Besides, Its no news that veterans DREAD training camp and preseason for that matter lol.

Im just ready to see some final decisions made on who the coaches deem the best to make our 53 man roster and the practice squad. All these names get jumbled in my head too much lol.

~Heres Hoping We Shock The NFL
      GO BRONCOS!!!

    14. Marshallman-15 says:

this is extremely random, but i think it’s funny how we think champ will get the most picks this season. he could, if the other team ever threw to his side…when we played the buccs’ last year, they didnt throw to his side ONCE! that’s how good he is. I think goodman or a saftey will.

    15. HomeTeam007 says:

Anybody gonna be at the traing camp opener Friday morning? I am!
I must say that I am totally stoked on the crew we have coming into camp. I really can’t see who to cut at this point. Its gonna be tuff and competitve and awesome and sweet. I agree on our linebackers. That is a nasty crew. Watch the Orange Crush come back into full effect this year. I honestly dont even care if we make the playoffs this year as long as every team out there is afraid to play against the Denver Broncos Defense. I know that in time McDaniels will have us a winning machine.

There are so many people holding thier breath this season…..not me; I am shouting” Go Broncos!!!!!!”

      Who else is with me?

      Orange Crush!!!!!

    16. gary bronc says:

Does anybody remember back in 2005 when we played the raiders late in the season and big Al Wilson stopped their running back on a key 4rth and inches as he jumped over the pile… well i wanna get back to those days, that excitement and intensity on defense that’s what we’ve really lacked these pass 3 years and i think with these key addition like Andra Davis and Brian Dawkins the Bronco’s are really going to be a force on the D. GO BRONC’S FO LIFE!!!

    17. lostfan says:

it’s a great time of year, training camp has started; i get back to the states thursday night and then after some jetlagging will be able to visit the broncos training camp for the first time in many years…YEAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! can’t wait. personally i beleive that the media and the nfl nation will be presently surprised by the 2009 Broncos. it sounds like the media hates the broncos almost as much as they hated bush…..

      GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    18. babychamp-broncos^ says:

TheRoyalBeast—I’m with you I can’t wait to see who starts and everything because I remember last year when nate webster was named our starting mlb over koutouvides everyone one was upset…..lol idk why i think thats funny but he did a horrible job at mlb..so did koutouvides when webster went down and he had to start….just a random thought :)

    19. gary bronc says:

i remember getting madden 09 and saying kout-a-who?? lol

    20. babychamp-broncos^ says:

Hometeam007 I’m with you to the fullest and I look forward to competing in the fantasy league and taking you and all the fellow bronco fans down respectfully haha

    21. speespeeCU says:

So how do you guys see the D-line shaping, who do you think starts??
I was thinking about it and I really couldn’t pin down the players and where they start but this is what I was thinking so far (I am sure it will change several times throughout the preseason)

At DE I was thinking we might start Marcus Thomas, and Kenny Peterson- Ayers might rotate in if he is used in multiple positions! Maybe Rulon Davis works his way to some PT!!

At NT I am holding my breath for Baker, Pedescieaux, or Carlton Powell. I think Powell might be able to step in this year- he was hurt his whole rookie year but he was a great run stuffer in college- if he could gain a little weight I think he could be a pretty good NT!!

    22. gary bronc says:

Hey just a thought but does anybody think Colt McCoy would be a good fit for us next year?

I guess we gotta see McDaniels system first but just a thought.

    23. broncosnugsfan says:

I doubt Baltimore would trade marshall for ngata. But maybe Kelley Gregg could be an option.

    24. West Coast says:

broncosnugsfan…..I can’t see us pulling the trigger on that deal unless it’s Ngata and a 1st round pick. Don’t be surprised if it happens. Marshalls interview on Monday sealed his fate. Yes Marsha is a great WR. Yes Marsha caught a ton of balls last year but Jay threw to him 188 times. Most in the NFL.

      Bring on the Bengals……..

    25. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Let’s get going guys, it’s going to be a great season. GO BRONCOS!!!

    26. OGBronco4life says:

I sincerly believe that our beloved Broncos are going to the playoffs this year. First, the D-line will be key in doing so. The starting line will look like this:

NT Ronald Fields 315lbs, his experience and love for contact will win him the job
DEs Marcus Thomas 315lbs and Kenny Peterson 300lbs.

Keep in mind that we have some beef this year, and McD loves the big boys:
      Powell, Carlton DL 6′ 2″ 315
      Pedescleaux, Everette DL 6′ 4″ 315
      Parker, J’Vonne DL 6′ 5″ 340
      Clemons, Nic DL 6′ 6″ 300
      Baker, Chris DL 6′ 2″ 330.

Yet, the key for the unit will be LB.

ILBs DJ Williams 245 lbs and Andra Davis 251lbs
OLBs Robert Ayers 270lbs of lightning and Darrel Reid 270 sturdy lbs.

Thats alot of beef to push around. This ain’t Shanahan’s Broncos boys.

      Broncos Rule!!!!

    27. broncochick1 says:

I am excited about this year and I have read on Fox Sports that internally the Denver Broncos think they can win at least 10 games. I would like to see 8 and I would be really happy.

    28. broncs55 says:

      broncochick1:

If we win 8 games, no one can say we got any worse! That will be a victory in itself, however if we win more than 8… obviously, we got better!

The key to winning games is not getting big time yardage, its getting more points than the other team. As long as we can do that in the majority of our games, we will always come out ahead! McD obviously knows this. Managing the clock is what Orton is all about, he keeps his own defense off the field, tiring out the other team’s defense, that why his wins are greater than his losses. He may not have put up big numers, but the man can manage a football game quite well!

    29. griff77302003 says:

Yes it would be great to win 10 games or to make a playoff run or in the wildest of FANTASIES make the SB lol . I’m going to stay in the land of reality and hope we have an 8-8 season. What a wonderful season that would be , yet very hard work to accomplish with all the young and new talents and systems we have . Whatever happens ( 4-12 or 16-0 ) as a true fan I say GO BRONCOS !!!
