Wednesday Practice Report

July 28th, 2010 - 4:37pm by Gray Caldwell

Dove Valley is back open for business.

Rookies and early-reporting veterans took to the practice field Wednesday in shorts and shells — no pads — for the first “opportunity practice” of the summer.

The group included all seven signed 2010 draft picks, including Eric Decker, who saw his first extended action during practice. The veterans in action were Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, Darcel McBath, Kenny McKinley, Marquez Branson, Nick Greisen, Russ Hochstein, Kolby Smith, Britton Colquitt, Ryan Harris, J.J. Arrington, Lance Ball and Bruce Hall.

There was a notable difference on the team’s practice jerseys — a patch with the logo for the HealthONE Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center. In addition to the patch, HealthONE will donate one dollar to the Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation for every fan that attends training camp.

It was a quick practice — it lasted a little more than an hour, with lighting and thunder occasionally crashing in the distance. Below are a few quick hits and photos from Wednesday’s session.

QUICK HITS

  • In addition to the rookies that participated in practice, Eddie Royal was seen on the sideline. He watched practice from a door near the locker room before heading back inside.
  • A few position groups had far less players than normal, meaning there was plenty of one-on-one coaching to go around. The only two defensive linemen at practice — Ben Garland and Jeff Stehle — got plenty of work with defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely. Branson, Riar Geer and Nathan Overbay got extensive face time with tight ends coach Bob Ligashesky, and Orton and Quinn worked closely with quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels for the majority of the practice. These opportunity practices are designed to give rookies a bit of a head start heading into training camp — having less bodies in the position groups is one way to accomplish that.
  • Overbay handled the long-snapping duties during special teams drills. Throughout OTAs, he occasionally worked with Lonie Paxton after practice to improve his consistency.
  • During one of the more interesting drills of the day, cornerbacks practiced covering one receiver while the pass went to another. Their task was to break away from the block of their receiver and make the tackle.
  • Decker ran routes and participated in practice after missing OTAs with a foot injury.

Thx for the articles and pictures, the more visual aids I see the more excited I get that football season really is on the horizon. Makes it realer lol

Look out for Cox and Decker. They will be Good. And soon Darcel McBath wil be a starting safety cuz that kid is amazing, hands down.

“QB quagmire” still gives me a headache but I will be excited to see who gets deemed worthy of the position. Tebow deal better get done soon. He is missing “opportunity” lol

      Go Broncos 2010. TRB out….

On draft day I remember begging us to draft Decker. He sure looks the part of Eddy M. Hopefully we will see Tebow and especially Thomas out on the practice field ASAP.

TRB I really like McBath and even Bruton as our safeties of the future. Who better to learn from then a warrior like Dawkins. Heck I’m just glad to see players out on the field and the season inching closer…

P.S. lets get as many people as we can to attend training camp, that 30,000 and show the NFL why Broncos fans are the best in the whole country.

Just listened to an interview with Decker on 850 KOA. He sounds good and confident. Eric said that his injury to the heel feels fine. In April he had a metal plate and screw taken out and at this time feels fine. Eric also said that his heel feels good and that his route`s and cuts on the field are good but that it`s mostly the mental aspect mow. Sounds good to me. Can`t wait to see him play. He`s gonna be fine I think. It was an awesome interview. Very refreshing. GO ERIC!!!!!

I CAN’T WAIT, I FEEL VERY GOOD ABOUT OUR DEFENSE . THE OFFENSE IS SOMETHING THAT I JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE, I FEEL OUR OFFENSE MADE OUR DEFENSE JOB HADER THAN IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE, BECAUSE OF THE LACK OFF RED ZONE EXECUTION AND LONG DRIVES. BUT I HAVE GOOD FEELING ABOUT DECKER AND WITH GAFFNEY AND ROYAL WE SHOULD BE FINE, I JUST HOPE THIS POWER BLOCKING WORKS.I WISH IT WAS SEPTEMBER I CAN’T WAIT!!!!

60 MINUTES OF FOOTBAL GO BRONCOS!!!!

Man, I take the day off from the blogs and a whole bunch of new stuff comes rolling in. Go figure. lol

I just can’t wait to have Bay-Bay & Tebow become Broncos officially so we don’t have any holdouts and we can get this TC off to a great start. I’m so ready for camp to begin… more like very anxious! The guys look good in the pics. Thanks for keeping us updated on it all, Gray!

Keep the faith Broncos Country… its gonna be an awesome season,
      GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

ok so I was thinking, does anyone else think Stokes is done in Denver? I think it would be best if we tried to shop him a lil, see if we couldnt get a 6th or 7th round pick for him. I like Stokley and what he’s done in Denver but I’d like to see Kenny get a shot, something tells me if we give up Kenny we might regret it! kind of like someone named Dominic Hixon! we let that one slip through our fingers! I hope we make the right moves in 2010! I have faith we will!

      GO BRONCOS!!!

Stay healthy. Play up to your potential. Earn your place on the team. Earn your playing time. Show us why McGenius wants you to be a Bronco. Show everyone why you deserve to wear the Orange and Blue. Let McGenius work his magic and lets play some football.

      Go Broncos!!!

07elway,you took the words right outta my mouth girl.

lol @ BFE… Great minds think alike!! If I thought I was anxious for Doom to get signed, these deals with Thomas & Tebow are just as bad. Camp is creeping up. I sure hope their agents are jerking them around (probably are anyway). We got 2 guys that are just itching to get to practice and this is a critical time. As rookies they got these few extra days to learn some stuff and here their agents are being probably putting up a fight just to make sure they get a decent share of money. Argh! Buggers.

      Keep the faith Broncos Country…
      GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!!
