Veikune Joins Squad

November 17th, 2010 - 12:46pm by Eric Detweiler

The Broncos bolstered their linebacking corps on Wednesday, signing free agent David Veikune.

To make room for Veikune, the team waived linebacker Jarvis Moss.

Veikune played in 10 games for Cleveland last season after the Browns drafted him in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-2, 257 pound linebacker registered eight tackles in three preseason games this season before being waived on Sept. 7.

In college at Hawaii, Veikune appeared in 41 games as a defensive end, earning All-Western Athletic Conference honors in his final two seasons.

With the Broncos, the 24-year-old will wear No. 90.

Moss, a 2007 first-round draft pick, played 34 games in four seasons as a Bronco with one start, totaling 42 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

He better be a starter or I don’t see any reason to dump Moss for him,I guess we will see how good he is,I knew Moss was a bust anyway, but watch him go to another team and make headlines,if he does,we will know for sure that our coaches are worthless.

  2. BeastFromEast92 says:

I don’t know if anyone has addressed this or not,but SD is ranked 2nd in the NFL in total Defense. They are 3rd against the pass and 4th against the run.Their total Offense is ranked #1,and they are #1 in passing.
Funny how a team that is 4-5 can have the #1 ranked Offense and the #2 ranked Defense.I think they have has a lot of trouble on ST,so we need to play good ST Monday night.

Also has anyone heard the status of Goody,we sure could use him against the #1 passing Offense, and if Gates heals up and is ready to play,I think we have to put a Safety or an extra CB on him, cause we don’t have a LB with enough speed to cover him.I believe I would put McBath on him, cause Dawk sure dosen’t have the speed anymore.Gates will be the biggest part of trying to slow their passing game down, considering how good he is,and he is #1 on their team in receptions and yards.

If Matthews plays it will be hard to stop the pass and the run too, hopefully we can slow down their running game without giving up a ridiculous amount of passing yards like we did when Cassell threw for 469 yds and 4 tds last week.

We need to jump out early like we did against KC and hold the lead.We also need to play consistant on Offense and put together descent drives and keep our Defense off the field as much as possible,I think that is the key to the game, that and keeping our running game going, like last week.

Just one man’s opinion that don’t mean a Helluva lot.

Hopefully we can get moss for the practice squad or something…too bad I liked him

  4. baylinorcrush says:

    Hey, we got Polamalu’s brother!

  5. whitebronco#1 says:

Maybe this guy is a Special Teams addition, where Moss was playing most of the time. I think coaches are comfortable with the group of LBs that played vs. Chiefs on Defense, and there are a lot of ST players that are increasing their role on Offense or Defense (Larsen, McBath, Mays, Woodyard), so coaches need them as fresh as possible.

If not… yeah, Moss is a bust, but at least he knew the playbook.

Maybe Moss will find a place in Washington. With 2 years of experience at OLB and ST, he surely could fit in the skins’ new 3-4 def.

    Go Broncooos!

  6. strandoftds says:

ROCK N ROLL. Memories. I looked like that 11 years ago. Not no more. WILD.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

Funny about releasing Moss, only the timing of it was off, this is what I said yesterday on the Mike Rice blog when I listed the things I was most impressed with in the game:

    2. The front seven on D. I truly believe that we need to have Mays inside as a starter and keep Haggan outside. This combo along with Hunley outside and DJ inside really did a good job of controlling the edges and the D line was able to manhandle the middle. Ayers back will only help further, so I guess we will finally be able to say see you later Moss when Doom comes back next year.

Didn’t even need Doom back, Hunley alone was enough, that put an end to a storied first round pick that lasted way too long, what a waste of everything, time, draft pick, effort, roster spot, you name it…. Pretty cool I talked about it the day before he is released, you could say I saw that one coming, the Hunley performance was the final nail in his coffin.

  8. strandoftds says:

BFE, The Denver Post yeserday and today stated that both Gates and Mathews are questionable. Gates is not looking good as of today, but we`ll see.

  9. strandoftds says:

    Bay, do you mean Hunter?

  10. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah of course Hunter, I don’t know why I replaced him with Ricky Hunley in my head, wishful thinking probably, haha.

  11. BeastFromEast92 says:

Bay…you outta be ashamed of yourself, you know McD listens to us,it’s your fault we got rid of Moss.LOL j/k.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

It goes to show nobody reads my posts, no one corrected me yesterday, LOL.

  13. BeastFromEast92 says:

strandoftds…I don’t like wishing bad health on people, but I sure would like it if somehow Gates can’t play Monday night.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

Ok, I stand corrected, McD reads my posts, LMAO….

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Last I heard the Chargers think Gates will be able to go even though he hasn’t practiced.

  16. BeastFromEast92 says:

Hey could you pass it along to him that we don’t need the Quinn brothers.LMAO.

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’d say Gates will go,even if he is injured, unless its major, players like him are pretty tough.

  18. baylinorcrush says:

But actually when you hear Gates talking about his injury, it appears pretty serious and he might miss the game even so the team thinks he will be ready to go because of the extra day:

“It’s a tear. It’s not a tough-man, grind-it-out thing. I tore it,” Gates said. “It’s got to heal. That’s a big part of me running and cutting.”

Gates was able to play against New England and Tennessee despite limited or no practice time. He hurt his plantar fascia against Tennessee on Oct. 31, when his 48-yard touchdown catch late in the third quarter put the Chargers ahead in a game they’d win 33-25.

Gates didn’t practice at all before the game at Houston and was inactive.

“For what I do, my feet and my legs are my two big assets,” said Gates, who has 40 catches for 663 yards and nine touchdowns. “I’d prefer not to hurt the team. That’s the decision I’m going to have to make and the coaches are going to have to decide. Am I actually beneficial at this percentage? I don’t know. Who’s to say?

“I know I did all I could do to get out there against the Patriots, all I could do to get out there against Tennessee, all I could do to get out there against Houston. I just couldn’t do it. And I’m going to do all I can do to get out there against Denver. Whether I can do it or not, I’m always trying to play. But it’s painful.”

Gates said he’s been doing what he can the last week and a half to stay in shape.

“It might be baby steps, but it’s going in the right direction,” he said.

  19. whitebronco#1 says:

I think Gates will play. Chargers come from their bye week and have an “extra day” as the game is on monday. Gates doesn’t really need to prepare physically all week for this game. If he can get a couple limited practices on friday and saturday he’ll play.

If Gates plays is a completely different game than if he doesn’t. They know we know it, so they are just making our game planning a bit more difficult. We have to prepare to play vs. Chargers WITH Gates.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

Obviously McD hasn’t paid me one bit of attention about Brady Quinn since I have asked to go with just two QB and trade Quinn before the 53 man roster cut. As for the other Quinn, I’m afraid we have another large specimen type of player like Moss who no matter how long you try to break him in is more about natural body and ability than the brains required for the mental aspect of this game to be successful in this league. The TE’s McD keeps bringing in should be a good sign of that. BTW, I believe Tennessee picked up CU TE Greer whom we just released to make room for Ball.

  21. BeastFromEast92 says:

Players know when they can play and when they can’t,I wouldn’t risk my career,no matter what the coaches say.I agree,we have to anticipate Gates playing, and if he don’t,well it’ll be a lot easier on our LBs and DBs.

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah they signed Greer to their PS.

  23. royalbroncofan1 says:

Yeah, I read your post yesterday bay, but it’s definitely worth another read…lol. You were on it about Moss. Just came sooner than expected but really as we all know, Moss made no impact on Defense and had the terrible hold on ST, that nullified Eddie Royal’s punt return for a TD vs. the 49ers. Best wishes to him as he moves on.

David Veikune has good size and speed…(6’2″ 257 lbs) and runs the 40 in 4.79. He played DE at the Univ of Hawaii and converted to LB with the Browns. Veikune was a sack specialist in college.

  24. eddiecheddar says:

some quick facts about Jason Hunter, he came from the lions where he had five sacks last season as a 4-3 defensive end which is more sacks than any bronco on this roster not named DOOM had last season, and this season he has moved to outside linebacker and is doing a pretty good job for us

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

I guess it’s worth a shot,Moss was just taking up space and $$$$$ anyway.I think if we get Ayers back,we will have a pretty good LB core, and next year when Doom returns,we should be pretty good, but we do need some DLs in the draft.IMO.

  26. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah Hunter and Mays have impressed me,not to mention Haggan blew my mind last week,I didn’t think he had it in him.

  27. whitebronco#1 says:

BFE, I’m in for some DL in next draft.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

    That would be about time…

  29. royalbroncofan1 says:

Jason Hunter was an undrafted rookie free agent in 2006. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers and played there for 3 yrs. He actually only spent one season in Detroit.
Kudos to Hunter for making it in the NFL as an undrafted FA out of North Carolina.

  30. nalibok says:

Moss was a pathetic bust anyway.

I wonder why the Browns got rid of this 2nd round pick so soon. Has talent, but had off the field problems?

  31. timmah says:

My question is what happens to haggin when ayers comes back does he stay on outside or will he go back into the inside. I think he has more of an impact on the outside than in. Plus with him and ayers on the outsides and dj in the middle along with mays i think that would be one of the best linebacking crew we have had in a long time…and hunter coming in for third downs or as a replacement it would be hard to stop them all the time . If we can get to philip cry me a river early and force some turnovers we can win.\\

    go broncos.

  32. theronmexico says:

This dude looks like Tarzan – - hopefully doesn’t play like Jane.

  33. footballMANIAC says:

I don’t think we really need another linebacker. I’d rather see another D-lineman come into our rotation or another running back (which, by the way, I’m glad McDaniels has finally moved past Maroney). Even a reliable pass catching tight end would be nice. Or a corner.

  34. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Wish I could justify not getting rid of Moss. But can’t really, maybe the broncos just werent a right fit for him. Maybe he will excell elsewhere. Miami may pick him up. We are so thin at the position however that I woulda preffered if someone else was dropped but oh well.

    Bay,

Darn you, you beat me to it. As soon as i saw his picture i was like, HOLY SMOKES, Polamalus younger brother. With any luck he plays like him. Might be a great adittion, after all, once upon a time he was a 2nd rounder which means he excelled in college. He may be hungry to prove himself now in the NFL. Sorry to see Moss go, with any luck we get him on the practice squad or something. Its almost as sad as seeing josh barrett go. Underacheiver at his position but great at ST.

ps: I saw the misspelled hunter but so much time had passed from that post I just let it slide. But when I saw it again here i was like wow, he must really think his name is hunley lol (even tho im sure it was just a copy and paste) … Dont frett, we all read your posts :-) LOL … TRB out…

  35. baylinorcrush says:

timmah, Legwold says the plan is to put Haggan back inside when Ayers comes back on the outside and put Mays on ST. But I agree with you Haggan oustide and Mays inside this last game was hard to beat. So it looks like Hunter will keep his outside spot even when Ayers is back.

  36. footballMANIAC says:

So will Ayers just get benched then?

  37. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, yeah what can I say, I go way back and Ricky Hunley meant a lot to Denver so I guess his name is still stuck in my brain somewhere, here is a little background on Hunley for the ones who didn’t get to see him play:

Eventually the Bengals traded Hunley to Denver for first and third round picks in the 1986 draft and a fifth round pick in 1987. Hunley’s starting deal of $1 million over four seasons, a $1.75 million signing bonus, and $60,000 of incentives caused enough of a splash to initially alienate several less well-paid Bronco veterans. But he eventually proved a sound investment, leading a solid defense that more-than supported John Elway’s offense en route to consecutive AFC championships in 1986-87. Elway was certainly much happier watching Hunley from the sidelines as a Bronco than he had been running from him in Stanford’s backfield as a collegian.

  38. baylinorcrush says:

I don’t understand your thinking, Ayers and Hunter will be outside, Haggan and DJ inside.

  39. baylinorcrush says:

What I meant was Hunter will keep his spot even when Ayers comes back outside because Haggan will have moved back inside, so the loser in all that is Mays.

  40. baylinorcrush says:

No comment so MANIAC must of got it.

  41. 1nOnlyTRB says:

He probably posted before he saw your post. But yea, hunter has done pretty well, but so has mays. The thing is neither one of them are exceptional. They are just both ok. But I agree, would like to see Ayers and Haggan outside with DJ and Mays inside, but there was a reason haggan was moved back inside. All this is gonna be crazy next year when Doom is back. Will probably be doom and Ayers on OLB and DJ and Haggan(I hope mays) inside. Haggan is getting up there. So next year, instead of focusing on the LB corps looks like we can focus completely on DL. We need youth there soo badly.(would also like Mike Pouncey as our LG).

  42. footballMANIAC says:

Sorry bay, I was distracted. Yeah, I get what you’re saying now. I was confused. I thought you meant Haggan and Hunter on the outside, Mays and Williams on the inside.

  43. areferee says:

Played a team from Hawaii in college. They kicked our *sses. Tough. Veikune can team up with Syd’Quan as the “Hair Pair”.

    We don’t need Polamalu. We’ve got Syd’Qu and Veiku…

  44. strandoftds says:

I hear ya BFE. I never want to see anybody hurt. Gates is a Bronco killer.

  45. strandoftds says:

Prediction, Both Quinns will not be on roster next year. Just a guess though.

  46. baylinorcrush says:

Good we’ll be able to hold a Quinns going away party, haha.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

Actually next year we might have to hold a league taking a year sabatical going away party, not so much fun.

  48. strandoftds says:

I can see it now. When the draft comes around there is another Quinn coming out in this years draft. lol.

  49. baylinorcrush says:

The Quinn Triplets, please give me a gun quick, I need to shoot myself, LOL.

  50. milehighmagic88 says:

Hopefully this Veikune guy gives us some something positive. At least he came from a 3-4 in Cleveland. The playbook shouldn’t be too difficult for him to learn, at least I wouldn’t think.

And I was just watching some parts of that Chiefs game and I just wanted to say that Ryan Clady is a beast! It looks likes he back to his old self. Tamba Hali kinda got the better of him in both games last year. But on Sunday Clady dominated Hali from start to finish. It was awesome to see.
