Turner Lauds Tebow, Miller

November 23rd, 2011 - 4:50pm by Max Henson

Week 12 presents Norv Turner with the same two challenges every opposing head coach now faces when preparing to play the Broncos.

On defense, limit quarterback Tim Tebow’s ability to extend plays.

On offense, keep linebacker Von Miller out of your backfield.

Easier said than done.

“We’ve played against (Tebow) twice now, and the impression he’s made I think with our guys is that you have to work to get him and then get him on the ground,” Turner said in a conference call Wednesday. “He’s an elusive runner, and he’s a very big, strong guy, so you have to do a good job of staying alive, and everyone’s got to rally to the ball.”

Chargers safety Eric Weddle echoed his coach’s sentiments regarding Tebow.

“He’s a heck of a player,” Weddle said. “Just the way he is as a football player and the way he’s quarterbacking and the way he runs around and plays…

“We know what he can do. It’s going to be a tough challenge.”

The same could be said for Weddle’s teammates along the offensive line, which is battling through several injuries.

Starting right tackle Marcus McNeill missed last week’s game in Chicago with a neck injury, as did starting right guard Louis Vasquez, who sat out with an ankle injury. Both players’ status is uncertain for Sunday.

On top of that, starting guard Kris Dielman has not played since Week 8 due to a concussion and he’s been ruled out for the year.

In the face of those injuries, Turner said he was pleased with his O-line’s effort last week against the Bears, saying they “held up awfully well”.

Turner also knows that group will need to be at their best Sunday with Miller and his 9.5 sacks coming to San Diego.

“He’s playing in a very physical manner, and you can tell that he’s — in the six or seven weeks that it’s been since we’ve played him — that much better,” Turner said of Miller. “He’s the real deal, and he’s the full package in terms of being able to rush and run.”

“He plays fast, he finishes, he’s aggressive, and those are all the things you want in a guy.”
