Tuesday brought a lot less rain but a few more players to practice at Dove Valley.
D.J. Williams and Wesley Woodyard joined the festivities — two more veterans recovering from injuries — after missing yesterday’s session with flu-like symptoms.
Brandon Marshall and Lucas Taylor missed the morning session, which Head Coach Josh McDaniels said was a coaching decision due to soreness.
The morning session was a walkthrough format, and the team headed back out to the fields for an afternoon practice as well..
Here are some quick hits from Tuesday:
Ryan Clady, Jabar Gaffney, LaMont Jordan, Matt McChesney and J’Vonne Parker were a few of the players spotted walking around Dove Valley today. The veterans are not required to begin practice until Friday’s training camp kickoff.
The return of Woodyard and Williams meant rookie Lee Robinson and linebackers coach Don Martindale got a little more company. On the other hand, the absence of Marshall and Taylor meant Kenny McKinley and Nate Swift got some extra attention from receivers coach Adam Gase, as they were the only wide outs to participate in practice.
Ryan Torain was still the lone running back with coach Bobby Turner, working on different formations and practicing routes out of the backfield.
The rookies in the secondary worked with defensive backs coach Ed Donatell and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan for much of practice. They focused on play calls, going in motion and calling audibles.
McDaniels watched the quarterbacks — who you might have noticed yesterday are wearing new orange practice jerseys — for much of practice. He pulled rookie Tom Brandstater aside on several occasions to give him pointers on his footwork.
***UPDATED 4:50 p.m. MDT***
In the afternoon session, Casey Wiegmann made an appearance on the field and said hello to offensive line coach Rick Dennison. McDaniels made his way over to shake the center’s hand, and the three chatted for a few minutes before Wiegmann headed to his car.
The linebackers paired up in the afternoon, one acting as a receiver and the other trying to break up the pass. Assistant linebackers coach Roman Phifer — a three-time Super Bowl winning linebacker himself — acted as the receiver against Wesley Woodyard several times, once hauling in an impressive grab and spiking the ball with a laugh.
Marquez Branson, McKinley, Richard Quinn, Swift and Torain all worked with the quarterbacks, often lining up four-wide with Torain in the backfield to work on route running.
The quarterbacks also practiced play action by having each other act as the running back. Kyle Orton would drop back, for example, and Brandstater would pretend to take the hand-off out of the backfield before Orton launched a pass. Now that’s a Wildcat formation.
Now here are pictures from both the morning and afternoon sessions.

glad to see DJ getting back in action and hopefully woodyard will be a impact this year considering how good he did as a rookie..also glad to see torain is getting some practice he will be great in short yard situations
Glad to see DJ and Woodyard back as well. Both my fav LBs. Last year Woodyard showed alot of heart and intensity and even tho he only played a few games he came away with about 54 tackles on the year. He is the real deal, he has an uncanny ability to be “in the right place at the right time” since preseason last year. Saw some Tom Brandstater highlights, hopefully McD can make him the next big TB since he prides himself on his QB mentoring abilities.
J-Cut,
i believe Torain is very good, if he can stay healthy. Moreno better report soon, or he might fall behind Torain for awhile.
I agree with you royalbeast on Woodyard, unfortunately I think he will be a bench player, unless he can beat out Andre Davis, he is an inside LB, i believe.
true, they didnt even put him in madden 10 but I have a soft spot for underdogs in general in this case for undrafted players with potential. Because they tend to be more hungry and work harder than most. He might be the next big name undrafted player for us since Rod Smith all he really needs is a chance. dunno if he is a 3-4 guy tho but worst comes to worst we can use him in special teams.
I think the key to our offense this year will be good field position from KR/PR cuz one of the reasons Orton excelled in Chicago was he and his rb usually had less distance to travel. and good field postion hasn’t been our strength in recent years.
Oh mylanta, this is almost too much for me to handle!! All the players are starting to trickle into Dove Valley… YIPEEEE!!! Glad to see Torain was back in action a little.
With faith…
GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

Oh my god I am getting so excited for the season again…. I don’t know about the rest of you but I was really excited to hear that Clady is already hanging out around Dove Valley!!! If Clady can build on last years performance I don’t think it will really matter who plays QB (1/2 a sack in his rookie year- unbelievable!!)
Woo go broncos can’t wait for Friday- and hurry up and get Moreno and Ayers signed!!!
when are they supposed to release the roster?
Dont know much about em ATV but I have seen some highlights on everett pedescleux (youtubed alot of bronco acqusitions while I was waiting for training camp) and I enjoyed what I saw. Especially his 6’4, 312lb frame. good to plug up our middle. His a great pick up. Chris baker i know nothing about but im all for new dl members and scrapping the old era dl with the exception of a (doom and moss) and only reason I want moss around is cuz we spent a 1st round on him and he excells in 3-4 from what i hear.
I’ am extremely happy with every decision that has been made thus far. The Broncos needed change. I think we are almost were we need to be as far as a whole unit. All we need are a couple defensive linemen to step up this year, other than that i know we are ready to get back into playoff form.
McDaniel’s has done a great job so far it is time we give him some more respect. I KNOW FOR A DARN FACT THAT WE WILL SURPRISE NOT ONLY THE AFC WEST, WE WILL SHOCK THE WHOLE AFC.
Does anyone know how close we are on getting Ayers’ and Moreno’s deals done? I think it’s important we get those guys out on the field.
Hey ATV, how are ya?
Anyone else here incredibly happy and so THANKFUL Farve decided to stay retired?? So glad he finally chose to make up his mind. Its about time!!
Thanks for the post Gray!
07elway – I’m glad he made up his mind too, though it would have been nice to see him sign with Minnesota and really mess up that division, but that would have aggravated many-a Green Bay fans, so I think for him, it was definitely the right decision (plus it would’ve been just asking for a threatening injury).
Once Knowshon and Robert sign, regardless of Marshall situation, we will be in AWESOME shape. Glad we’re finally gettin’ there
Torain ATV fan THANKS FOR THE LINK.
Now Im debating on which jersey I should get.
I was thinking of getting the Blue Superbowl 32 Atwater Jersey or the White Davis jersey.
HELP IM GOING CRAZY WICH ONE SHOULD I GET!!!!!!!!!??????????
07 elway,
doing good, everytime i go to other blog it seems no ones there. Once in a while get lucky, usually day. Have you heard any news on DD, is he feeling better.
haha, that would’ve been humorous to see Favre really mess up that division but it was time for him to hang up the helmet. Like you said he probably would’ve ended up with a really bad injury.
Yeah its really slow on the other blog… nothing to talk about, yet. Haven’t heard anything new about DD since yesterday. He was telling me that if he didn’t start feeling better by last night he was gonna go to the doctor, have a bad feeling that’s what he ended up doing. And then I guess today Doc came on there and said he’s sick too!! Told them don’t get me sick through the internet or whatever… haven’t been to the doctor in years, don’t want to start now! So that’s all I know for now. If DD doesn’t get better by Friday, I’ll probably take over the training camp coverage he was gonna do for the other blog. So if that’s what I end up doing, then I’m really going to try and go out to CO and see if I can make it to some sessions.
I want 27 and 56 there!! Where are them??
@broncochick1,
I think the whole league is waiting to see if a deal gets done for Crabtree out in SF. He was drafted #10 but wants top 5 money. If they give it to him it will affect what the agents for players drafted around him(Moreno 12, Ayers 18) can ask for. Don’t start to worry until after Friday.
Peace!
go with Atwater
u get 3 for $99, free shipping
I agree with d-unit, if it is after friday and they ain’t signed then start to worry. It is good to see Wes and DJ back in action would be great to have them both on the field at the same time. But it will be hard with Davis there.
What up everone else?
Man I didn’t know we had Roman Phifer on our staff. He was some what underrated and I liked him when he played. Choakland will go and mess everything up by over paying the wide receiver they drafted causing players after him to want more money!
Ok… I’m liking our LB situation more and more… Last year seemed that we didn’t have the right chemistry at LB.
I think we’ll FOR SURE see more of Woodyard and I wouldn’t be surprised if he took someones spot…
Wow… those jerseys have a good price tag on ‘em… Too bad they don’t have the amazing yellow throwback jerseys because I would then get one…
i agree with you BRONCOBAILEY…i honestly feel like we have the best LB corp. but to be honest i thought the same thing last year until this guy named Nate Webster let me down…lol….IM SOOOOO READY FOR THE SEASON
yea, I think we had too many guys switching in and out… so this year should be better… and next year, even better!
I love those orange jerseys! As a matter of fact, in honor of training camp commencing, I went to my local Wal-Mart and bought a six pack of Orange Crush! I think Chris Baker is a diamond in the rough and it is so great to see the magnificence on display thus far. Just do your best, Broncos and things will work out well. I’m so proud of you. Let’s flummox the experts. GO BRONCOS!!!
haha… Now I’m thirsty
Ay what’s up with the bronco’s rating on madden we do not deserve to be given a 70 ovr rating, the texans and the raiders are higher than us!!! We deserve at least a low 80 but i assume it will be fixed with a simple update.
Plus i thought Kyle Orton would at least be a 81 ovr or an 82 but he’s rated at a crappy 74 ovr.
And did any body see marshall at training camp? That’s really discouraging when one of ur best player only shows up so he doesn’t take a pay cut.
I say, see how well he plays up until about week 6 or 8 and sign him the big contract because if he leaves a year after cutler leaves im going to be greatly upset with pat bowlen and everybody else. He caught 200 passes in the last 2 seasons come on! Marshall is not Javon Walker.
Sign Marsh, sign them rookies, and lets win the division this year. GO BRONC’S!!!
The Madden ratings are a bit different… like a high 70 is a low 80… Yes, I still believe Orton should have better ratings… but they made more variety in the ratings… like only the elite are in the 90s… so yea…
gray bronc why is that discouraging i mean you wouldnt go to work for free would you…so why should he thats all thats on my mind when i go to work…my next paycheck
but on another note anybody know if chris simms has actually been signed or can he but cut and replaced by mike vick cuz i heard McDaniels might think about signing him…that could heal up some damaged cuts…from cuter
We all know vick isnt a good fit with us but I admire McD at least talking about it openly and willing to do whatever makes the team better. Many organizations are acting scared about it. I repeat I do not think he is a good fit for us and doubt that we will actually get him before my words are misconstrued. he is a gunslinger and a runner and McD prefers more low risk guys.
but heres the news:
Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said “we’re not bringing him in right now,” but acknowledged that the team is always weighing its options. The Broncos have uncertainty at quarterback after trading the disgruntled Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears. Kyle Orton is penciled in as the Broncos’ starter.
“We’re always going to try to do what’s best for the organization — that could mean it’s a player or a situation that we’re going to evaluate,” McDaniels said. “We’re always going to try to make sure that we leave no stone unturned. If it means adding a player, we have looked at every player that we feel out there could help us at this time.”
Thanks for the post Gray!
I love the fact Torain is working one on one with Bobby Turner. It sounds to me Torain may actually have His break out season this year if He can stay healthy!
Besides I think Moreno needs another year of development, He came out of collage early.
I also love that the quarterbacks practiced play action by having each other act as the running back.
That was one of my biggest critisisms of Cutler, He would do a play action as if it was a hassle for him, half-assed.
You got to sell sell sell!
Control those Line backers!
Make them think not react.
TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !
GO BRONCOS ! ! !
