Even though linebacker Danny Trevathan never had the chance to play with linebacker Wesley Woodyard at Kentucky, he heard plenty from the former Wildcat.
Now, he’ll have a chance to be teammates with Woodyard, a player Trevathan said he tried to model his game after.
“I had to be myself, but at the same time I learned from him,” Trevathan said. “He was a great football player – he played every aspect of the game, he even returned kicks. That’s why I wanted to return kicks – until I broke my wrist and that was over.”
Despite never overlapping at Kentucky with Woodyard, Trevathan said that Woodyard, who was, “just been born to be a leader,” gave him advice all through college.
The rookie linebacker said he’s talked to Woodyard since joining the Broncos and that the advice has continued pouring in.
“He’s been giving me advice since I’ve been in college,” Trevathan said. “He told me to just play ball. It’s just like being at Kentucky, but you have to handle yourself like a pro here. You have to know the ins and outs of the system. I’m trying to go under his wing.”
Woodyard earned a spot on the roster as a college free agent due to his play on special teams and has served as a special teams captain in each of his four seasons as a pro. Trevathan knows that special-teams play is key to his future success in the NFL as well.
“That’s your ticket,” Trevethan said about special teams. “You want to establish yourself in that aspect of the game – especially being a rookie. There are a lot of people in front of you that have needs for their family. By the way of making this team, you have to learn how to play special teams and be accountable and available wherever they need you. (Special Teams Coordinator Jeff Rodgers) had me playing a lot of positions today on special teams and I’m trying to get them all down. I want to be the person that they come to when they need (something).”
By chance, Trevathan ended up being assigned the same number Woodyard wore at the beginning of his career – No. 59. It wasn’t intentional, but now that he has it, Trevathan hopes he can represent it like Woodyard did.
“It was out of two numbers, 57 or 59. It was crazy how it just happened – I forgot (Woodyard) had No. 59, I saw the pictures of No. 52. It’s 59 and I’m going to try to rock it like he rocked it.”

I think LA needs a team but the NFL is not realizing that they need to beat out college sports. UCLA and USC football is huge.
Seems like D.Tre has his head in the right place.

Can you believe that he wrote that the Bronco / Raider rivalry needs to be reborn??? Almost funny!

I like the idea of having semi-pro football teams. Teams could eliminate practice squads and bring up and drop players easier. Or just have extended practice squads that play Saturday games. Helps to find out who really is a character player and who is just flash.
I don’t think any of the 5 teams mentioned for relocation could move, with the Exception of the Jags. It would take a long time for the LA Jags to catch on in CA, especially in those uniforms. I mean, I like their uniforms all right – they just wouldn’t fit in LA. IMO – I like the idea of adding 8 teams to the NFL and extending the season!!! Just me – i’m sure!
DB – -done his best but this blog is just plain…..
in hibernation…. till somebody says something stupid for somebody to get excited about. I tried…guess it wasn’t stupid enough! LOL
Daddy out – I guess the blog Killer can have at it.
Extending the season would reduce the quality of football played IMO. The season is already a grind on players, if they had more games there would be much more injuries. Then we would basically be watching games being played out by 2nd and 3rd stringers….
not to mention the fatigue factor.
I wanna apologize for my language last night,I was totally out of line.I wanna apologize to Turtle for Some of the things I said to him,but not all things.Guess that’s what happens when you drink too much!Well off to the pub!

The Jags could move to LA. Change their uniforms and name to the Argonauts…and then maybe, just maybe be able to support their “own” NFL franchise… Lol
come on bfe you were fine. i’ve done mucn worse. and everyone one here knows and loves the beast so you get away with more than most! but nice of you to apologize anyway. i see another slow blog day. i had to skip out to get in a quick workout and now i’m off to dinner with the mom so i’ll tryta be back tonight and check out the latest.
lotsa good points there daddybronc. the la market is college dominated in football, i agree and the nfl should absolutely be there. cant figure out why its not. even with useless politicians and leaders, they should still be able to lure pro football. i also agree LT was done when sd let him go. they knew it, he knew it, and his play showed it. but what a rb in his prime. very few better but he burnt out quickly once it was down hill it was a 90 degree dropoff. anyway i’m out til later. keep it goin and watch your back guys….
Hey melo – not an idea I would die for but, while I’m sitting here having no sports to entertain me – it was an idea to contemplate.
It would really be a lot better if it were organized like AAA, AA, A, B levels all as pro teams. I think a lot of great football players are being lost to that communist sport – referring to soccer – and the solution is to allow more people an opportunity to find their spot in sports. There is a phenomenon also with athletes that some are late bloomers. While late bloomers are still pretty much done by the age of 40 just like the others – there is no way some of these great athletes find there place in pro sports at this time. There are also great athletes that have all the talent and work ethic, but they never get looked at by scouts because they have the wrong body conformation, height, weight, left handed, etc. I mean that the David Ecksteins’ and Drew Brees’ just rarely are allowed to even try out.
BFE – congratulations on getting your handle unfettered.
I never have any idea what or who is getting censored or what the real standard is – because it changed a lot since I’ve been reading the blog – but I took no offense at anything that was said and BT holds his own quite well – so I too think you were fine last night (for a guy that was juiced.) LOL
I think the blog killer got this one too!
