A cool rain sprinkled down on the Broncos as they began their afternoon practice in shells and shorts, but the clouds quickly passed and allowed the team to complete a crisp practice.
Some veterans like Jabar Gaffney, Brandon Stokley, Brian Dawkins and Champ Bailey were back on the field for the second session of the day, while others like Daniel Graham and Justin Bannan took the night off.
DRILLS
The tight ends unveiled a new drill tonight designed to improve ball security. Using a blue leash to rip the football from each others’ hands, one player would attempt to keep the ball secure while his partner would yank the leash and try to force a fumble.
The defensive line honed their footwork and attack angles in a one-on-one drill focused on collapsing the pocket. Coach Wayne Nunnely encouraged his players to squeeze the outside shoulder of the opponent and force them inside back to where the quarterback would be.
The offensive line worked on running in open space to set screens. Two lineman would sprint out to a teammate 10 or 15 yards away and seal the block.
David Bruton, Perrish Cox, Cassius Vaughn and Matthew Willis all practiced covering punts. Britton Colquitt kicked small punts towards the end zone so the speedsters could either catch them or keep them inside the 10-yard line.
SCRIMMAGE HIGHLIGHTS
In a 7-on-7 drill Kyle Orton’s pass sailed past Eric Decker’s hands and right into Andre’ Goodman’s bread basket for an interception.
Orton completed his first four passes of 11-on-11 drills, including a circus catch from Stokley reminiscent of his game-winner against the Bengals last season. Alphonso Smith leaped up to deflect the ball away from Stokley, but Smith fell down and the ball bounced off his feet and popped directly up in the air. Stokley accepted the gift and snatched the ball, running it in for a touchdown in front of incredulous fans and media.
Demaryius Thomas and Cassius Vaughn ran neck-and-neck up the left sideline and both turned for a jump ball from Kyle Orton. Both players got their hands on the pass, but Thomas muscled it away for the catch.
Tim Tebow slung a side-armed pass just behind Lance Ball, who was waiting for the pass behind the line of scrimmage. Ball couldn’t make the catch and Nick Greisen swooped in to scoop up the ball for a turnover.
Richard Quinn took advantage of Graham’s absence, making tough catches in traffic over the middle of the field and on the sideline.
THE SOUND OF SUMMER
With the evening sun camped out just over the trees, a nostalgic jingle rolled into Dove Valley on four wheels. Toward the end of 11-on-11 drills, turf manager Troy Smith drove an ice cream truck onto the practice field.
In the street you might see a kid drop his or her bike and sprint to the sound of bells signifying the ice cream man. The music had a similar effect on the football field.
Ryan McBean made a beeline for the truck as soon as he recognized the sound. Toney Baker wasn’t far behind, waving his helmet in the air and pumping his fist. D’Anthony Batiste leisurely skipped his way to truck.
Not one to deprive the fans, Don “Wink” Martindale took an armful of treats and flung them into the crowd. Soon after, McBean led a train of smiling youngsters to get their fill. The rest of the kids in the crowd scattered onto the field for their share.
Robert Ayers elected to stay back and stretch, but Richard Quinn made sure his teammate got a frozen treat, too. What could be better than enjoying dessert on a stick with friends and teammates under a Colorado sunset?
“This is a very physical camp,” Brian Dawkins said. “To do things like this adds a little something to it… a little boost.”
Not everybody recognized the truck’s song. Tim Tebow thought it was piped in as simulated crowd noise, and Champ Bailey mistook the sound for someone’s cellphone. Once he saw the truck, Bailey opted for a super flavor.
“I went for the Spiderman (flavor),” he said. “I just couldn’t do the chocolate… so I got something that was sweet.”
The Broncos will hold a closed practice tomorrow morning, but will be back in action at tomorrow night’s practice at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The practice is free and open to the public. For more information, click here.

I’m having a hard time fighting off Doom depression. I feel like we have already lost much of the wind from our sails, even before pre-season starts we are without any real OLB.. I heard that we are even going to go back to the 43 because Doom is OFTS. Wow, there’s a huge step backwards when the entire defensive scheme is re-adjusted right before the start of the season….
Not good at all when the say of the day for the last three months was “everyone will play soo much better the second year in the system”….
Then to think we are going to replace the NFL sack leader with Moss in a cast???????
Or that last year our playmakers where Orton, Moreno and Marshall. This year it’s Orton, Moreno and Willis…?
One thing about being a fan is that from year to year or game to game one sways from optimistic to pessimistic and everywhere in between depending on our emotional range and the number of W’s in the column… lol
Last year at this time I felt a strong positive momentum going into the season, even with Orton at QB I was feeling and preaching 10 Bronco wins…
Let me tell you that I was riding high at 6-0 when the sky turned dark and I fell off that mighty tall horse and broke my sitti’n muscle…
This year, I have to be realistic, these injuries along with having rookies that can’t contribute are going to be a huge factor in our ability to win…
I wish I could just be a cheerleader and say “yeah hoo-ray 10 wins Broncos!!!” But I am in my second year in McD’s system and am more versed in his ability to “win now, we are not rebuilding”…..huh? yow-za! not rebuilding?? hmm..
Anyway, I’m thinking the Broncos, in their current state of flux, will be hard pressed to win 4-6 games this year…
ILMSDB!!! W or L!!!!
I agree KFS, I hope he can throw more TDs but ill leave the other scores we will have to our talented backfield! I have faith in Orton this year!
I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT IF ORTON WOULD OF NEVER GOT HURT AGAINTS WASHINGTON, THAT COULD OF BEEN OUR TURNING POINT. HE DID BETTER THAN ANY ONE THOUGHT HE WOULD. YOU COULD TELL EVERY ONE QUIT NEAR THE END OF THE SEASON. I JUST HOPE THEY DELIVER FOR MORE THAN 16 GAMES , WE CANT LOSE THE FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON AND CALL IT QUITS!!! IT’S GOING TO BE ONE GAME AT A TIME….
60 MINUTES OF FOOTBALL GO BRONCOS!!!
This blog gonna ever get fixed??
Well I was gonna wait till preseason to predict our win loss record,I was leaning real heavy on 10-6,but now I will say with the loss of Doom, but with the signing of White and the rookies playing good,if we get Clady back and Harris and Kuper are healthy, and the Dline holds,I’ll predict 9-7,and that’s being generous. But there’s a lot of ifs and ands in there!

OC, nice to see you finally coming out here with your thoughts during this unbelievably tough week. I was here the entire week and trust me I went through the mourning multiple times over and everything after that and poured my feelings out the best that I could.
However there is a season to be played, they won’t let us off the hook, so we need to go to battle, this season more than probably any other will show exactly what kind of character guys we have, fighters or just out to make a buck, as long as they give it their all I really don’t care if we win just 6 games, this is a rebuilding season, I don’t care what McD is preaching, and with this unreal bad luck injury wise my expectations have even been dampened more than they were to start with. My mind always said 8-8, my heart talked me into looking at a 9-7 season, now it somehow has lost some of it’s importance to me, the fight in all the players is really all I’m looking for now, and I’ll take whatever record comes out of it.
And fighting your all, the way things look so far, is going to be a real tall order, after all in the NFL there is not much difference on what you make whether you win or lose, if the season starts out tough it will be interesting to find out who will fight to the end and who will not. And the scariest part of it all is that the last couple of years we started off real well just to lose a few and then basically let the season completely slip away, it’s going to have to be a total mindset turnaround and with what has transpired it will be one of the tallest mountain we have climbed yet. Not rosy, but there are plenty of guys here who are sporting the orange color glasses who will plenty make up for our vision of things with their unending cheerleading.
Either way I can’t wait for this season, not with hopes of grandeur or playoffs but simply to find out what we are made of and how McD’s plan is moving along, I will be on the edge of my seat for all 16 games, you can count on that, 4-12, 8-8, it won’t affect my enjoying this season. With all the seasons that I have watched, each one of them brings me different expectations, you have the lows and the highs and no one stays down low forever and no one stays high forever either, it’s an up and down thing just like everyone’s life, I try to enjoy the ride no matter what part of the curve on the chart I’m at, and now we are probably half way up, hence 8-8 would be a great representation of that. Just my opinion.

Well I have seen that most people are very upset about Doom not playing for the whole season and trust me it will upset me the whole season…but just because he’s out there is NO reason that we can’t get 9-11 wins this season! If you look at it and everything our whole offense has improved majorly with the additions of Willis, Thomas, and Deck!! Our Secondary has even gotten better with the addition of Thompson and especially Cox! We finally have a great return man so Royal won’t have to be out there getting winded the whole time. Speaking of Royal, they also threw him in the slot which is where he should be playing and it looks like so far in training camp that he is excelling extremely well in that spot!! I am certain that Moss and Ayers can do well in the OLB spot. They each have great potential!! Also I still think we should pick up Adalius Thomas for a 2 year contract just in case, or Schobel. I can’t wait to see Woodyard really step up and get his chance this year!! Our running back core has gotten even better with the addition of White. We finally got us a pretty good power back! Orton also looks incredible compared to what he did last year. I have a feeling he will easily go for around 4200 yards or more this season. He could’ve came close to that last year if he hadn’t gotten hurt!!
I can’t wait for preseason to get here so we can all see who all steps up!!! Our whole defensive unit just seems soo pumped up!!!
Ohh yea…
I LOVE ME SOME BRONCOS COUNTRY!!!
Still not fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bf30….I will have to agree to disagree with Orton getting 4200 yards, why??
because I think we get our running game going this year,if Moreno and Buck get healthy, along with the bruising Lendale White. That is the reason Orton had 3800 last year is because our running game wasn’t up to Bronco standards, you rush more and you have to pass less, and vice versa.I think Moreno gets 1200 yards,White gets 700 yards, and Buck gets 400 yards.Just one man’s opinion that don’t mean a Helluva lot.GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BFE
I hope everything goes well at the practice tonight at Inveso, jaleous of all the folks who will attend. I’ll have to wait til the 15th to get my fill.
6-8 pm.
All is not lost. While injuries have mounted up it allows others to get reps and hopefully we find some surprises in who can step up and make a difference. TEAM chemistry should be better with the the locker room cleaned up of the me guys and now pulling as a TEAM. Remember when the going gets tough the tough get going. Let’s see some tough Broncos step up this year.
boyy the injury bug is smackin the broncos.. I wish the best for us this year.. our scedule isnt as bad as last year so it shouldnt be as bad.. I put it this way, everybody on the team are professionals, so we shouldnt be worried if Moreno, Dumervil, Clady, and Moss is out because the next professional should be able to step in their to fill the void and make an impact. if you get paid millions of dollars, then you should be able to do what is asked of you.
been away for awhile. and i have no idea whats going on with these blog pages. finally figured out how to see the blogs and now can only see one comment beneath the banner that says ’66 comments’. cannot find the other comments and dont know where my comments gonna go either. but go broncos.
In my whocaresbutmeopinion, Orton will have a breakout year just like When T.O. left The Pokes, so to will the Broncos without B.Marsh. A secound year in the system and lots more WEAPONS to play with. Orton will make the ProBowl this season and he will earn it.
Whats up with Hochstein?
And at the end of TC I hope Reid starts at the weakside rush linebacking position because I think he showed last year that he has the strength to hold the edge and that he also can rush the passer standing up or with a hand on the ground. That puts Ayers on the strongside with alot of able bodies fighting to play next to DJ.
Looking forward to Aug 15th.
Go Broncos!!!
Is the fullback completely out of Josh McDaniels’ offensive philosphy now? Spencer Larsen on occasion and that’s it? I’d really like to see a fullback that can catch back in our offense.
well. there it is. ok then
i am actually thinking its not all doom and gloom. its not looking great for us but there is some things that are good. doom being out will give us a look at where moss is and whether he should be kept and also what we have in robert ayers. not to mention extended playing time for ayers, wich is what he needs. woodyard also is a strong player that will be put out there more, and our 5th round pick cox along with alphonso smith makes for great depth and youth at corner. lets play these young guys in this year of low expectations and get them ready for the future or get them out of here if they cant meet standards. mcdaniels is not going to call this a rebuilding year and if we had all of our guys i would say maybe he’s right but with these guys going down it tilts the balance towards a building kind of year. but great coaching could take us a long way. the talent is there we just need it brought out.
Bfe92….I would have to agree with you a bit. Moreno should get at least 1000 yards and I’d be highly upset if he doesn’t! He should’ve gotten there last year!!
….
I love coming here and reading all the optimism. I share with a lot of you faith that the blue and orange can still have a great season even with all we are stacked up against right now. We still have a lot of talent that will be suiting up for us this year, I think we gotta helluva coach that knows how to get the most out of his role players. I am predicting an AFC West championship for the Broncos with an 11-5 record. I can’t wait for the season to start!
Raiders Suck, Chiefs Blow, Chargers Swallow
Everyone is so quick to bash on Kyle and want Tim to start as quarterback this year. You were all so quick to bash on Kyle last year when you got rid to the biggest cry baby in the NFL. Kyle works hard and always has and always will. He is not a show boat and is not out for the big pay and million dollar indorsement deals. He has a strong person with a great head on his shoulders and wants to win football games. You all need to give him the chance he deserves to make the Broncos offense a success. I mean really….look at what he did in Chicago as a rookie and what he did last year when no one gave him a chance. Yes, true they didnt make it to the playoffs but new coach, new team, new players and still did a heck of a job. So before you go jumping on the Tim T band wagon like everyone else think about the person who was the lowest paid starting QB in the NFL who hasnt complained once about money or wanting the big pay day. The guy who gives back and works hard day in and day out. Kyle is the QB of the Broncos so start supporting and not hating.
