Training Camp Day 1: P.M. Blog

July 31st, 2009 - 9:32pm by Zach Eisendrath

Day one of training camp has come to a close. The Broncos completed their first evening practice on a brisk night at Dove Valley, lasting just over two hours.

After enjoying ideal conditions for the morning practice — warm temperatures with a bit of shade — temperatures dropped considerably for the p.m. practice. Still, for the most part the weather again cooperated, as the team managed to avoided the rain that fell at Dove Valley for much of the afternoon.

Here are some tidbits from the team’s second practice of the day:

ROLL CALL: After displaying his playmaking skills during the club’s a.m. practice, Brandon Marshall sat out the p.m. session due to a coach’s decision. Champ Bailey, Renaldo Hill and Marcus Thomas also missed both sessions, however, the trio did run sprints following the conclusion of tonight’s practice.

POSITIONING: Offensive and defensive starters didn’t change much from the morning session, other than Marshall not being out there with the offensive unit. We did, however, get a glimpse of who may be in the mix to return kicks this season. Alphonso Smith, Eddie Royal, Kenny McKinley and Matthew Willis took turns rotating returning duties.

  • Spencer Larsen, while wearing a defensive blue jersey, switched between offense and defense. Head Coach Josh McDaniels has made it clear that will be the norm this season for the inside linebacker/fullback.
  • DRILLS: The players got a chance to really start to get physical during the one-one-one drills. When running backs went up against fullbacks, Peyton Hillis was able to show his resolve. On one play he was beaten by Andra Davis. He quickly redeemed himself, keeping D.J. Williams away from the quarterback on the very next play.

  • Meanwhile, the defensive line and offensive line went at it, too. Darrell Reid and Ryan Harris had one noteworthy battle. Reid made a nice spin move on Harris to get by him, but Harris quickly recovered and maintained his ground. Elvis Dumervil and Ryan Clady also went at it during the drill.
  • The team stressed kickoff return coverage from the onset of Friday night’s practice. The opening special teams session proved to be the most interesting one of the night, as gusting winds made the task of snatching the ball out of the air more difficult. As the balls were released from the JUGS machine, the wind held them up before quickly dropping them to the ground.
  • In one special teams sequence, Matt Prater alternated between high and low squib kicks. The high-arcing kicks appeared to cause confusion for the offensive and defensive linemen trying to return them.
  • The tight ends drilled themselves on ball control during a series in which a rope was attached to the ball. While the players held the ball, tight ends coach Clancy Barone tried to strip it from their hands by tugging at the rope.
  • PLAYMAKERS: Kenny McKinley was very active in the passing game during the evening practice, tallying receptions all over the field. His biggest play came early in practice when Chris Simms found the former South Carolina standout for a long touchdown along the left sideline.

  • During 11-on-11′s, Smith jumped in front of a route, but the ball went through his hands and Royal ended up catching Kyle Orton’s pass.
  • Larsen’s versatility was on display in a one-on-one drill between linebackers and fullbacks centered around blitz pickup. He rotated from blocking fullback to blitzing linebacker throughout the period.
  • QUICK HITS: The unsolved mystery of the night came in the form of a car alarm from the team’s neighboring player parking lot. Although it’s common to hear horns at the end of drills during camp, it is unusual to hear that sound continuously away from the field. Though not confirmed, rumor has it that the sound was coming from Matt Prater’s car.

  • The evening session ended with sprints, and Rulon Davis — running with the rest of the club’s offensive and defensive linemen, showed his speed by finishing before the rest of his teammates.
  • TODAY’S PLAYLIST: As is quickly becoming a tradition during practices at team headquarters, music was again booming on the practice fields (thanks to the wonders of the IPod). Here’s a sampling from tonight’s practice selection:

  • Tom Petty – The Waiting
  • Michael Jackson – Beat It (Note: During team stretching, Alphonso Smith accompanied this song with his “Thriller” dance moves).
  • Ice Cube – Check Yo Self (Remix)
  • Pearl Jam – Even Flow (personal favorite of Kyle Sonneman)
  • Led Zeppelin – Kashmir
  • Below are more pictures from tonight’s practice:

    2. Dream says:

Absolutely wonderful stuff. Keep up the good work.

    3. West Coast says:

Nice photos. Great job. Moreno if your reading this, get your butt to camp.

    4. DCEBronco says:

Hey, I went to practice this morning and was told that I could not use my camera because it was professional. I am not a professional and just bought my Canon. I was a little disappointed since I didn’t bring my little point and shoot and since I am headed back home to San Diego this was my one and only shot to see the team practice. Please update the site so that others don’t make the same mistake as I did. THANKS

    5. Gray Caldwell says:

      DCEBronco,

Sorry about the issue you had today. We will look into it and make the necessary changes. Hope you had fun at practice nevertheless, and again, our apologies.

    6. navy_bronco_fan says:

Great stuff! Thanks for the great job of reporting guys. It’s so nice to be reading some football stuff again!!!! On another note – that picture of Dawkins is intimidating……I wouldn’t want to see that if I was trying to catch a pass over the middle, dang that dude looks mean…….

    7. J-CUT ROCKS says:

i hope smith can make a huge impact this year…nice job reporting..and that picture of dawkins is awesome…he is a BEAST

    8. Dr.Chris24 says:

Dawkins looks like he’s about to take out the cameraman.

    9. 07elway says:

haha, great minds must think alike Doc. I was just about to say something pretty similar to that. He looks like a beast in that picture… totally awesome!

Thanks for all the updates. Great job at keeping us informed.

      With faith…
      GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

    10. Ellismate_#1fan says:

Things look like they’re going well. I like that we’re practicing in pads, that’s exactly what our defense has been missing…TOUGHNESS!!!

Did you guys hear about Cutler and Urlacher?? Cutler has gotten Urlacher mad at him. I always heard that he was a bad teammate when he was in Denver, but the Broncos/Cutler fan in me didn’t believe it. Now the fact that Cutler isn’t a Bronco anymore, I believe. We don’t need a guy who is making enemies on his own team.

      GO BRONCOS!!!

    11. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

It’s nice to see that Spencer Larsen is poised to be in the mix on both offense and defense. He can do much better than that fool Vrable. All in all, I’m in good spirits after seeing this clip. Success is ours for the taking this season. GO BRONCOS!!!

    12. Dynamicdave says:

Urlacher is not mad at Cutler. I’ve read all the articles. Some idiot friend of Urlachers said some unfounded things and word got spread. Urlacher said it’s not true and he is glad Cutler is on the team. See, this is how rumors get spread.

    13. Dynamicdave says:

Ellismate, here is a transcript from them.

“There’s nothing between us,” Cutler said Thursday, when he reported to training camp. “I just want to put that to rest. There never has been anything between us.”

Urlacher added: “I never said what I was quoted as saying and that’s it. I have a lot of respect for Jay. I think Jay knows that.”

Please read deeper before spreading rumors. Leave that to NFL Network and ESPN.

    14. monodono says:

We should start some more rumors and maybe by the time we are done Cutler will have lightning shooting out his ars………….

    15. monodono says:

Moreno comes out of collage early and undeveloped holds out? Moreno will be lucky to make the TEAM with that aditude. I could see Ryan Torain and Correll Buckhalter splitting carries with Hillis creating huge numbers with the slack, While Moreno sits and developes.
Please Mr. Xanders, get it done. Even Detroit has all of thier rookies signed.

    16. BroncoAussie says:

Man Dawkins is a beast and nice update guys. Training camp got to love it, football!

    17. broncofanlvnm says:

These updates are great. The next best thing to being there! Keep up the good work. It really helps get the fans enthusiastic about our team! I’m really excited to see them in action. Surprises are in store the rest of the league!

    18. Broncoboy6 says:

Aloha Everyone. Ooh boy, I wish to be there someday. Man, Brian Dawkins Looks CRAZY, AND I LOVE IT!!!. I am going nukin futs already. GO BRONCOS!!!. Mahalo & GOD bless.

    19. BroncosRockdaRockies says:

      GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    20. samoanbronco says:

Oh yeah!!! Weapon X (on opposing offences) “You are marked for termination!” SHAMBAMMM!!!

    21. qgriffin says:

There’s more truth to rumors then you know. remeber when brian Gresie got punch by trevor pryce OOPs (fell on his drive way) Where ther smoke theres fire. Cutller has been know to be clickish and to drink a couple of drinks. These stories seem to come from to many people and sources to be false.

    22. Deify_you says:

Just learned that Moreno and Ayers are the first hold outs since Tatum Bell in 2004.

    23. hrdnokd says:

Can anyone tell me why Ayers has not signed yet? 17 is done, so is 16….some is dragging feet here!

    24. dlmyers says:

I have said it before, IMO the player can get his agent to get him to camp. These agents are selling the money aspect because of the CBA maybe. If the player REALLY wants to start his career then HE can make sure he is in camp.

Yes Cutler is a wimp. Two buddies yuking it up in Vegas usually tell the truth, but not for publication. Of course Urlacher will spin it softly. Even Olin K. said that he was a ‘weird dude’.

    25. Marshallman-15 says:

BRONCOS RULE!!! We may have already clinched the playoffs this year!

    26. imready says:

Good to hear the players comments on wearing pads and having contact
during camp, nothing but good stuff! I like the atitude of this team already and think the Broncos are gonna suprise some people on both sides of the ball! GO BRONCOS!

    27. Marshallman-15 says:

      rated 24th this year, bullshinto

    28. Torain ATV fan says:

For those of you thinking Marshall will leave after this year. Remember the Broncos can put the franchise tag on him at the end of the year, if he stayus clean outside of football. Also he will be a restricted free agent, means we can match the contract and he cant leave, due to the collective bargaining agreement.

    29. bronco#80 says:

man i cant wait for football season to start, im so pumped, 1 more week till preseason. I have a really good feeling. :)

    30. Torain ATV fan says:

dont know if you guys have seen this before. but is cracks me up alot. A picture of cutler crying, you have to stroll down a bit to april 1st.

    31. monodono says:

Now thats funny I don’t care who you are……..
