Training Camp 2012: Day 19

August 13th, 2012 - 1:55pm by Tyler Everett

After the team had a day off Sunday, the Broncos returned to the practice fields at Dove Valley at 10:35 a.m. Monday morning. The practice was originally scheduled to start at 2:20 p.m., but was moved up to avoid bad weather forecast for later this afternoon. The decision allowed the Broncos to practice in some of the most favorable conditions of camp, as it was 77 degrees with a light breeze blowing throughout practice. Here are some notes from the practice, which featured a number of big plays in the passing game.

For today’s trivia question, the answer comes from one of the final plays of the team’s first session of team drills. A defensive player picked off quarterback Brock Osweiler on a pass over the middle. Who made the interception?

Leave your answers in the comments section of the blog, and the answer — and winner — will be revealed at 5 p.m. MDT.

ROLL CALL

Safety Jim Leonhard (knee), safety Quinton Carter (hamstring and knee), wide receiver Tyler Grisham (knee) and linebacker Danny Trevathan (ankle) did not participate in Monday’s practice. Linebacker Keith Brooking left practice with a hamstring strain.

Defensive tackle Ty Warren was excused from practice for personal reasons.

Linebacker D.J. Williams was back in pads after not attending Saturday’s practice, and defensive tackle Justin Bannan dressed out, marking the first time in a few practices that Bannan has participated.

PLAYMAKERS

Monday’s practice featured a good bit of back-and-forth battling between cornerback Champ Bailey and wide receiver Eric Decker in a continuation of what has been one of the most compelling matchups during this year’s training camp.

  • In one-on-one drills, what looked like a completion to Decker was slapped out of his hands by Bailey near the sideline. Later in the drill, Decker broke free for a touchdown. During 7-on-7′s, Decker was able to get behind Bailey and haul in a deep post route for a long completion. Arguably the most notable play between the two happened when Decker got a step on Bailey on a go route during a team drill. Quarterback Peyton Manning’s pass dropped right into Decker’s hands. Decker’s momentum carried him up the hill near the sideline, and as Decker made his way back down, Bailey gave him a thumbs-up.
  • Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas enjoyed a big afternoon, making several highlight-reel catches. Thomas pulled in one touchdown reception during a red zone period on a fade route with cornerback Tracy Porter and safety Rahim Moore in coverage. A few plays later, Thomas hauled in another touchdown after faking to the outside and breaking back toward the middle of the end zone, where he was all by himself for the catch.
  • Another wide receiver who played well was rookie Gerell Robinson. Robinson made a nice catch near the sideline for a touchdown during the red zone drill. Later, during a team drill, Robinson leaped to make an impressive catch along the sideline for a substantial gain.
  • Quarterback Brock Osweiler used a pump fake to help freeze the defense, then fired a perfectly thrown pass to a streaking Julius Thomas, who made the reception in stride. After the play, Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio shouted to his defense, “Don’t fall for the pump!”
  • The defensive line and linebackers won consecutive plays during a drill designed to simulate third-and-1. But on the third play, running back Lance Ball found room behind linebacker Wesley Woodyard and made the catch well beyond the first down markers.
  • During a run-focused drill at the end of the practice, running backs Xavier Omon and Jeremiah Johnson both found a way to push the pile and get into the end zone for short touchdown runs.
  • One of the best runs of the afternoon came from rookie running back Ronnie Hillman. Just one play after a scrum broke out during 9-on-7′s, Hillman took a carry designed to stretch toward the right sideline, stopped on a dime, and raced back toward the left side of the field, making it all the way to the end zone untouched.

The Broncos will be back on the practice fields at Dove Valley Tuesday morning at 8:50 a.m. MDT. The session is free and open to the public, with gates set to open an hour prior to the start of practice.

How the heck did you become a Bronco fan?

  4. oldsouthstander says:

    Daddybronc: Yes. Two.

I watched a little of the Faders/cowgirls “game”. It looked like they were trying to outdo each other shooting themselves in the foot with stupid penalties. One series the Faders kicked 3 times because they cowgirls gave the Faders first downs the first two punts.
    DDDDDUUUUHHHHHHH!!!!!!

  5. tlcat06 says:

Too bad Broncos are vegetarians… I bet deep fried SeaChickens are quite tasty… ;)

  6. DaddyBronc says:

    Cool –

BBBP #1 – Hillman carries the load this season and becomes our 1000 yard rusher.

BBBP #2 – Wolfe gets more sacks than Miller or Dumerville.

  7. onetrackmind says:

If you’re health conscious, baked SeaChickens are pretty good as well. Maybe the Broncos will be the cooks and the fans will be the ones to eat?

TIcat, you ma’am are well qualified to post here, btw. Don’t sell yourself short. As a matter of fact, your passion is amazing!

  22. MarshMelo15 says:

Cat, let’s hope so. But if for some reason he doesn’t, he will by the end of the game when Peyton dominates!!!

  23. MarshMelo15 says:

HAHA…cat that one took me a sencond… Good one!!!

  24. floridabroncosfan4life says:

  26. tlcat06 says:

He types too Quick like me, is the problem.

  27. MarshMelo15 says:

Florida…I agree. My friend is a Cowgirls fan and he was all hyped up with their shutout tonight. But I had make him realize it was against the Faiders, and not only that they only scored 3 points

  28. floridabroncosfan4life says:

My mom loves the cowgirls and dolphins and they both suck and have suspect offenses

  29. tlcat06 says:

Melo, how can you be excited when your team only scores three points…. O crap, flashes from last year.

  30. sndvl says:

Ah, you’re welcome. But not necessary to thank me. Just keep the posts coming :)

  31. MarshMelo15 says:

Yeah idk Cat..Jerry Jones does not know how to build a team, he should stick to building stadiums and running oil fields. cuz thats all he knows

  32. tlcat06 says:

He needs to get out of the way and let someone else plan it… I’m telling you. Bowlen has the right guys in place to build a tram and he can come visit it or chew people out when he wants to but he is not around all the time nitpicking everything. We’re under tons of pressure right now, but he’s not going to Peyton Manning and saying “this is the year or we’re replacing you” and he NEVER did that to John Elway!

  33. tlcat06 says:

Bowlen also realized He who must not be named was a mistake so he got John Elway in there to help him out.

  34. MarshMelo15 says:

I think bringing in Elway for his executive roll was one of the best decisions Bowlen has made over the last 7-8 years for sure.

  35. tlcat06 says:

It took 15 yrs for Elway to win and when he did he won two. Irsay is an idiot, but he knew that he was going to have to help Peyton out if he was ever going to get a SB out if him. Get him the players, build around him.

  36. MarshMelo15 says:

Elway is definitely bringing back a winning tradition around here!

  37. tlcat06 says:

Jerry Jones just wants high profile players that are supposed to be the best, but have such bad attitudes they can’t work together.

  38. tlcat06 says:

I agree, Elway is Bowlen’s best decision, but so is Peyton.

  39. MarshMelo15 says:

Exactly cat.. But if it wasn’t for Irsay’s idiot move, we wouldn’t have Peyton, and would probably still be with Tebow. So I say thank you to Mr. Irsay. Plus, I think it put a chip on Peyton’s shoulders because now he is gonna go out and show the world and Indy why he is still a top notch QB!

  40. MarshMelo15 says:

Without Elway there is now way we land Peyton. The only thing Bowlen did in that was agree to pay him 100 million

  41. tlcat06 says:

I have heard from so many Colts fans who say they’re so happy he chose Denver because they believe he can win another SB with us because our defense is so strong and they don’t think he could’ve won another with the Colts. So thank you to Mr. Irsay for being an idiot! LOL I love Andrew Luck, but they have to build around him now and it’s going to be weird. I don’t like their coach.

  42. tlcat06 says:

True to a point Melo, but Bowlen wants to win another SB and he had to agree to do this… Elway convinced him, sure, but without his $ it doesn’t happen, not that Manning couldn’t make more somewhere else.

  43. MarshMelo15 says:

I agree with those Colts fans…No way could he have one another with the Colts… You saw what they were like last year without him. They BARELY won 2 games. In all reality they should have gone 0-16

  44. MarshMelo15 says:

Cat, good chattin with you. I’m gotta go to bed, can’t stop yawning.

    Good night and god bless.

    ILMSDB!!!!

  45. tlcat06 says:

And I’m sorry, some of that could’ve nbeen Suck for Luck, but it certainly did not start out that way. Some say it’s a pity because Peyton left them unprepared… But I call bs on that. He ran the offense, was the offensive coordinator and called plays. He is better at that than anyone and there’s no reason to blame him for doing that! Get someone like Brock who is going to take copious notes so that you’re not left with nothing. Peyton Manning is more valuable to a team than Tom Brady ever could be.

  46. tlcat06 says:

    Me either, night, Melo!

  47. oldsouthstander says:

    DadBronc: Got your 2 BBBPs.

    Mello:
    1) DMT 1523 Yards, 11 TDS.
    2) Champ 7 Int, 2 for TD.

  48. gasperdn says:

It’s good to see Hillman back on the field!! Hopefully we can see his speed on Saturday against the Seachickens!!
