The Broncos practiced one last time on Wednesday morning before heading off to Chicago for their first preseason game. The players were in shorts, jerseys and helmets – no pads, and did a fast-paced walkthrough in several different packages and situations.
At the end of practice, media and fans cleared the field as the team rehearsed its pregame routine. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. CDT with KTVD-TV (Channel 20) carrying the game on television and KOA Radio (850 AM) broadcasting over the air.
RED MILLER VISITS DOVE VALLEY
The head coach from the Broncos’ Super Bowl run in the 1977 season attended his first practice of the year on Wednesday. Afterwards, Miller and his family met Head Coach John Fox.
“I had never met him,” Miller said. “His career is similar to mine in that you move around a lot and then you kind of get honed in and you can win some games.”
Miller, who won 42 regular season and postseason games in four seasons as the head coach of the Denver Broncos, shared a part of his philosophy.
“What’s most important is the team atmosphere, and the idea of helping your teammate as much as you help yourself,” Miller said. “Do everything for the team, not for yourself. If you can get everybody doing that and thinking that way, I think that is ultimately important.”
Miller believes quarterback Peyton Manning will help bring all the pieces together.
“They’ve got that one guy, you know?” Miller joked. “That quarterback is something else. That’s a key guy. And they’ve got some new talent and a couple of new coaches. I think they’re going to have a good year. Truly, I do.”
- Safeties Jim Leonhard and Quinton Carter, defensive tackle Justin Bannan, wide receivers Tyler Grisham and Greg Orton, and linebacker Keith Brooking will not travel to Chicago, Fox announced after practice.
- The status of rookie running back Ronnie Hillman, who participated in walkthroughs the last two days of practice, is still up in the air. Fox said Hillman will meet with trainers after they arrive in Chicago to determine whether he’ll play or not.
- Though the first official depth chart was released on Monday, Fox said the quarterbacks’ order on paper may not be the order in which they enter Thursday night’s game.
The Broncos return to the practice fields on Saturday with a morning practice that will start at 8:50 a.m.
