Training Camp 2012: Camp Closes

August 17th, 2012 - 12:12pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos closed out training camp 2012 with one final shortened practice, open only to the media. The players wore shorts and shells during a session that was essentially a walkthrough preparing the club for its preseason home opener Saturday night.

Defensive end Jason Hunter (triceps), guard Chris Kuper (forearm), safety Quinton Carter (hamstring and knee), safety Jim Leonhard (knee), cornerback Tracy Porter (illness), linebacker Keith Brooking (hamstring), linebacker Danny Trevathan (ankle) and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson (concussion) did not participate in the final practice of training camp.

Head Coach John Fox said that Porter will be a “game-time decision” Saturday evening, and the same goes for Hillman.

“I’ve liked him,” Fox said of Hillman. “Every time he’s been out there, he’s flashed. Whatever we deem is going to be the best for him and for us, we’ll move forward with that decision.”

A total of 84,380 fans took in the team’s 16 practices that were open to the public during camp, by far the most that have ever watched Broncos training camp.

The total attendance in 2012 nearly doubled the previous record of 45,124 that was set last season when there were 18 practices open to fans.

Fox said he appreciated the spark the crowd provided.

“I think we’ve got great fans,” Fox said. “We’ve said all along, they’re very passionate. It really helps our football team. We hope that continues moving forward and I’m sure it will.”

With that, training camp officially came to a close. Sports Authority Field at Mile High hosts its first game of the Broncos’ 2012 slate Saturday night, as the Seattle Seahawks are in town for a game scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. MDT.

true cat on that point about the Farve/Rodgers situation……….I didn’t mean it in the sense of their relationship cause you’re right………….favre was an egotistical jerk………..I meant just having a young/vet QB.

  2. killerkod says:

    Calgary………

I agree…………and would like to see Os be number 2. I don’t think they’ll carry 3 QB’s cause they’ll need that roster spot somewhere else. Hanie can go for all I care……….never liked the signing from the beginning.

  3. MoyeBoy says:

Totally agree with you Kod on Brock being the number 2. I thought he looked really good for his first game in Chicago and even if we do keep 3 I think Weber should be the other. Didn’t like Hanie from the beginning either and for the Chicago game being his redemption game he played like crap.

I`m looking forward to seeing Hillman in action. Most likely got to wait another week or 2.

  5. killerkod says:

I agree strand………I’m looking forward to seeing him in action………would be great to see him in the 49′ers game.

  6. strandoftds82 says:

That would be cool. But if I`m the HC, I`d bring Hillman back slowly. Those Hammie pulls are ugly and can nag a player all year. They got to be careful with Hillman. IMO

  7. OrangeTsunami says:

I’m of the thought of keeping just 2 QB’s. Purely to free up a roster spot for a position player to add depth.

If we cut both Weber and Hanie, what are the odds that they are both picked up by other teams? Weber clearing waivers would be best case scenario IMO, and we can put him on to our practice squad (given he is eligible again). If Weber gets picked up (and retained) by another team, I could see Hanie sitting at home just waiting for a call. Point is, even if Osweiler is listed as our #2 QB, and if Manning goes down, there is nothing saying we have to go with Osweiler. Loosing Manning would be detrimental, and having either Hanie or Weber on the roster probably couldn’t save us anyway, so for me, I’d rather have that roster spot for someone who can contribute. Manning would go on the IR, and we can sign, call up, or resign someone else. There would be other QB’s available as well like maybe David Garrard, or even Mark Sanchez.. LOL!

  8. OrangeTsunami says:

I think DJ would also count against the roster if we decide to keep him

  9. OrangeTsunami says:

Kuper will also count against the 53 man roster. Having already practiced with the team, it is my understanding that he would no longer be eligable for the PUP list. So if we keep DJ, that’s two players on the roster who won’t be available, making carrying 3 QB’s pretty tough IMO. Then there’s Leonhard and Brooking. Will they be available to start the season, or even make the team?

  10. tlcat06 says:

OT–DJ Will count against the 53 man roster and we will be keeping him, at least I will be shocked if that changes, as the coaches seem to really like the guy even though he’s going to be out half or more than half the season.

I know that carrying 3 QB’s is kind of crazy, but everything I’d heard from reporters, even though they can be wrong, implies that we will.

  11. tlcat06 says:

btw, I think that Skip Bayless should be forbidden to talk about the Denver Broncos for the rest of his career.

  12. strandoftds82 says:

I bet we carry the 3.

  13. OrangeTsunami says:

Apparently no one liked my Sanchez comment… ;)

  14. strandoftds82 says:

OT, Heck, I`d rather have Garrard. LOL

  15. OrangeTsunami says:

Me too, was just joking around.. Had the radio on earlier, and people out here are saying the Jets have set Sanchez up to fail by not fixing the OL, and not putting any weapons around him (other than Holmes). Gonna be real interesting!

  16. strandoftds82 says:

More football in a few hours.

  17. strandoftds82 says:

I think the Jets will struggle this year. No weapons except Holmes and Tebow. Yikes!

  18. OrangeTsunami says:

I agree. I wish we played them this season.. It’s a very combustible situation out there in the swamps of NJ… LOL!

Training Camp officially closed… Excellent turn out. I wish I could have made at least one practice. Kudos to those that did. Next summer I will plan my Colorado vacation so I can attend a practice with my son!
I don’t think I had the chance to share, but last week during the game, he came into the room saw the helmet logo and pointed out he recognized them. Went and grabbed his pillow pet, watched some plays with me, saw the big hit by Ayers and said… To my astonishment “Broncos are mean. Broncos are cool” and then for the next 30 minutes, wanted to tackle me. I obliged. And every tackle was followed by a “Broncos Mean” and his own sack dance!

I’m gonna miss the game tomorrow. Got tickets to the Luke Bryan/Jason Aldean show. Good thing it’s preseason. Otherwise my “first date” may have been my “last date”! Lol

It was great to read about making tackling a priority on the previous entry. Great timing of it too because I was thinking about making my 4th BBBP concerning that stat!

BBBP #4- Joe Mays. Over 100 tackles. Leads the team.

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!

  20. tlcat06 says:

OT, I didn’t see your Sanchez comment, I was just skimming. I think I’ll stick with Os and Weber ;)

  21. tlcat06 says:

Sndvl, my cousin got me Broncos pillow pet for my birthday because he’s seven and we had a pillow fight with his. I love it that your son thinks the Broncos are mean.

  22. strandoftds82 says:

I`ll most likely watch tonights game. I got nothing else going on. Not planned anyway.

  28. tlcat06 says:

Skillz, your BBBPs have to be about a specific player I think.

  29. gijames says:

    Wow!
ok, so I am good with starting by cutting both Hanie and Weber , teams jump to grab Hanie the more seasoned vet, we bring back Weber to practice squad.
,If needed during the season, grab whoever gets tossed at qb from the Seahawks, or Cards

  30. wolfedom says:

LOL SEC. Mention beer, pizza, and rock and roll and SEC magically appears. Looking forward to tonight’s blog. I think the Jets are one of the worse teams in the league and until management and coaching changes are made they will continue to be. No difference will be made with any qb who plays there.

  31. skillz_inc says:

ok every individual on the denver defense will make them top ten ;)

  32. SECBroncofan says:

Watching Titans/Bucks…the Titans got 2 TOs in the Bucks redzone(int and fumble) Titans turn them into 10 points,C.J. has 2 TDs….it’s 17- 7 Titans in 2nd QTR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. SECBroncofan says:
