Top 5 Plays: Defense

February 18th, 2011 - 5:07pm by Gray Caldwell

On DenverBroncos.com, Broncos TV took a look back at the top five plays on defense from the team’s 2010 season.

They are as follows:

5) Brian Dawkins’ interception of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2. The veteran safety said he let the tight end gain a little space, hoping to bait a throw by Hasselbeck. The quarterback obliged, and Dawkins leaped to make the interception.

“I didn’t think he could get there, but he got there,” Hasselbeck said.

4) Jason Hunter’s interception of Mark Sanchez in a close loss against the New York Jets. It’s not the last time Hunter is featured in the top five.

3) A goal-line stand by the defense against the Baltimore Ravens, the final play of which was a fourth-down sack of Joe Flacco.

2) Syd’Quan Thompson’s interception on a pass tipped by Brian Dawkins and Justin Bannan. It effectively sealed a Broncos win against the Houston Texans.

1) Mario Haggan’s takedown of Matt Cassel — he had three sacks on the day — which resulted in a forced fumble. Hunter picked up the ball and raced down the sideline for the defense’s sole touchdown of the year.

Let us know what you think of the selections. Agree with the rankings? Did we miss any? As always, leave your comments below.

I`ve been watching the combine every year since they have been showing it on the NFL Network. Interesting to watch and see how they all evaluate players at their positions. Fun to see.

Yes it is….. cool to see so much talent assembled.

Clayton last night went on a tangent and was saying how bad Tim Tewbows release is and how inaccurate he is. Same old noise. He said that the Bronco`s might have to go and draft another QB in the next year or two. He was speaking in a matter of fact. I thought whtatever dude. Give the guy a chance. Your not God. I say Tebow is going to blow up the NFL in two years. He`s goona be fine I think. I had taken it personal is all. These guys think they have all the answers. Their idiots.

bay – glad to see the have a mediator involved, but then maybe that’s not a good sign. A mediator takes the place of an arbitrator… right? (outside of court).

  5. royalbroncofan1 says:

    Clayton – that twerp!

  6. baylinorcrush says:

I have been in the middle of mediation before, the most expensive way to go about resolving anything, because not only do you pay your own lawyers in a case but you also have to pay the mediator. However the reason you go mediator is to avoid going to court which long term would trurn out to be the most expensive way to resolve anything. I remember a mediation back 15 years ago which was costing me about $800 an hour, between my two attorneys and my share of the mediator’s bill (always super high pay these guys are, usually ex top of the line attorneys themselves)), and it lasted an entire day, it cost a fortune, like a $5,000 plus day but the other party ended up listening to reason because of the mediation and the case was settle out of court more or less in my favor.

  7. royalbroncofan1 says:

    Ok thanks bay.

So if there is no CBA in place come draft day, then every team will be forced to draft more out of immediate needs than they have in the past.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

But only mainly the bad teams like us, the good teams can still think investing in the future, we are not going to have that luxury, they must be first year producing picks.

i agree strand… some people just like to hear themselves talk!!! its ok though, all the negative enegery fuels the beast!!!

  10. royalbroncofan1 says:

Right.. like the Pats, Steelers, Pack etc.
That’s why I’m looking at Peterson as more of a luxury at this point.

  11. strandoftds says:

It`s a good motivator for Tebow. I just take it to personal is all. I don`t like it when they come across as matter of fact know it alls. In the end they just look like idiots anyway. Tim Tebow is going to out perform everybody on the Broncos this off season, CBA or not. He`s not going to allow himself to fail. Tim is going to succeed. These NFL sports analysts are all gonna eat crow.

    Bill Williamsson at ESPN writes

Newton to Carolina would please Denver.

The Denver Broncos hope Gil Brandt is right.

The former Dallas Cowboys personnel honcho and longtime draft guru said he’d be shocked if Auburn quarterback Cam Newton wasn’t the No. 1 overall pick by the Carolina Panthers.

“It would shock me… if he’s not the first player picked,” Brandt said. “If I was drafting and I had Carolina’s [No. 1] pick, I’d feel really good about who I was getting as far as ability. “

That would be the best-case scenario for Denver, which has the No. 2 pick. If the Panthers do pick Newton, it would basically open the entire draft to Denver. The Broncos are fully expected to take a defensive player. So, if Newton goes to Carolina, the Broncos will be guaranteed of getting their first choice.

Denver is expected to consider Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers, Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson. There’s a chance Texas A&M pass rusher Von Miller could also get in the conversation.

A lot could be determined at the upcoming NFL combine. Whatever happens in Indianapolis, the Broncos will surely be hoping that Newton has a tremendous showing to further entice Carolina.

  13. strandoftds says:

Royal, That would be cool for the Bronco`s. Sky`s the limit if that were to happen. I don`t know if I could see Carolina selecting Cam Newton sense they got QB Jimmy Clausen in the 2nd round of last year. Wouldn`t that be a wasted pick then. Well, stranger things have happened. Also HC Ron Rivera is a defensive minded coach and might be thinking defense all the way. This will be fun to see come draft day. I can hardly wait.

  14. strandoftds says:

If the Panthers do pick Cam Newton it would bother me one bit. Let them take Newton then we can select any player that our heart desires. I still say Fairley or Dareus.

  15. strandoftds says:

TT15, Like your handle. SKY`S THE LIMIT!! SIGN CHAMP!!

  16. royalbroncofan1 says:

Just thought I’d post what was out there. Personally I don’t see it either but like you said.. never know.

  17. strandoftds says:

Ya, stranger things have happened. If Cam doe`s have a great combine he might go straight up the charts. One thing that is funny though is that many have said Cam Newton is just a right hand version of Tim Tebow. If Cam is another Tewbow then why is he going up the draft bored to #3 at this moment to the Buffalo Bills. Major contradictions here. I`m confused by this matter.

  18. strandoftds says:

Panthers put franchise tag on Kalil their C.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

Bill Williamson was an idiot when he was at the DP and he is still an idiot.

  20. strandoftds says:

I think the Panthers are going to go defense with their #1 pick but who?

  21. strandoftds says:

    new blog

  22. luigi303 says:

jeremy shockey released by saints, what do you guys think about picking him up?

  23. broncosfreak30 says:

You know honestly, I hope that the Panthers take Peterson so it doesn’t come down to us thinking about him and we get Fairley!

I just know one thing, if Fairley is there to us with the #2 pick, we better pick him! Some people talk about character issues but those types of things just drive players like him! Suh has the exact same nastiness that Fairley has and look what he did this past year, not to mention defensive rookie of the year! I want someone nasty on our DL. If Fairley is available then sign him and then try to get either Taylor or Austin in the second round and I think we should be good on the DL with having Ayers and Doom as DE’s!

  24. broncosfreak30 says:

We should find some way to sign Shockey!! That would be a really good pickup and even with him I still think we try to sign Rudolph or Stocker!

Out of the two, I’d really prefer Stocker just because Rudolph has been plagued by injuries in his college career and we all know how that goes! Stocker is a big guy and him and Shockey would be the missing pieces to our offensive puzzle along with us getting Deangelo Williams

  25. broncosfreak30 says:

YEA BABY WE SIGNED BAILEY!!!! HELL YEA, THANKS ELWAY AND OUR ENTIRE ORGANIZATION!!!
