Thompson First to Sign

May 21st, 2010 - 2:36pm by Kyle Sonneman

The Broncos have signed the first of their 2010 draft picks, inking seventh round pick cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson.

Thompson was selected with the first of the Broncos two seventh round picks (225 overall) out of the University of California.

While at Cal, Thompson was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection in each of his final two seasons with the Golden Bears.

The cornerback started all 52 games possible over his four-year career, setting a school record for starts as a four-year starter at cornerback for Cal. He finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in pass breakups with 36.

He started his career as a Sporting News Pac-10 All-Freshman selection after starting in all 13 games, and finished it with 257 tackles, seven interceptions that he returned for 204 yards, two sacks, 20 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries — one of which he returned 15 yards for a touchdown against rival Stanford — and two punt returns that he brought back for 389 yards, including a 73-yard return for a touchdown. He was named Cal’s Most Valuable Back on defense for his junior season, when he tied a school record with 18 passes defensed, and held the title again as a senior in 2009.

“Basically, I’ll do whatever the coaches what me to do,” Thompson said. “Any position they want me to play, I’m going to play it. I’m just happy I was able to be a part of something that’s good in Denver. I’m just hoping to go out there and compete and do my best.”

The San Diego Super Chokers will always have a lonely, empty, rusty, dusty, dirty old broken down three-legge’d edsil of a trophy case…haha! Oh, but Their soo dainty and pretty in their little powder blue tights.. maybe they could win a tu-tu contest on the beach and put that trophy in there??

It must be depressing to be a Sparkler fan and watch other teams win Super Bowls in your own stadium…¿lol It’s like the Dolts are keeping the seat warm for daddy….hahaha..

How many teams have won the SB in San Diego???

Tebow will probably win the Superbowl in their stadium before they do..

I LOVE ME SOME TIMTANIUM TEMINATOR!!!!!

Three super bowls in San Diego, 88, 98 and 2003.

  4. baylinorcrush says:

We were in two of those three:

    Redskins beat us in 88
We beat the Packers in 98
Tampa beat the Raiders in 03

  5. Orange_Crusher says:

San Diego better build a better stadium so TT has a nice place to win the SB….

  6. baylinorcrush says:

In 2011 it will be in Dallas
    2012 in Indianapolis
    2013 in New Orleans
and the Jets and Giants are fighting at having it in their new stadium along with Tampa for 2014, so no San Diego for at least five years looks like.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

San Diego owners are cheap, Spanos and company have been way cheaper than Bowlen over the years, probably part of why they could never get over the top.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

Maybe I’ll make some early reservations for New Orleans, the 2012 season seems to be a reasonable year to go all the way.

  9. Orange_Crusher says:

Oh, okay SD just escaped the wrath of the SB TEMINATOR, he’ll get e’m in the regular season games…

You know what kinda bothers me is the stinking Bears wearing orange jerseys….?? They want to be our puppy I think?? Maybe they should have hired Shanny and called themselves the Chico Bearcos… sheesh..windy city wannabees… I feel sorry for Lovie Smith because JC is a Coach Killer!!!!!!! If Lovie is fired, JC will be the kiss of death or the stink of stench to any coach that even tries.. That kids head is huge like a big fake orange pumpkin…lol

  10. Orange_Crusher says:

You know I’m kinda glad they don’t play the SB in Mile High. It would be okay if you have won a SB lately like Indy but if your on a dry streak like Dallas and watching Philly winning the SB in your brand new stadium…? Thats got to be a let down? maybe not? idk?

  11. Orange_Crusher says:

    Oh wait I just got a flash…..

Jerry Jones drunken rant about Tebow is going to come back to bite him like a a snake in the arse….

Tebow wins the SB in Dallas!!!!!

I personally wouldn’t care, the superbowl is such a neutral ground type of game, I’ll always remember how weird it was in the stadium in Pasadena in 1987 when a third of the crowd was for the Giants, a third for the Broncos and a third from the corporate world who didn’t care either way so it never gets real loud, it’s so dispersed. It’s such a different event from all the other games, to me other than it’s the greatest thing in the world when your team wins it, it really isn’t half what it’s made out to be seating in the stands, it doesn’t rockn’ roll like another game if you know what I mean.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

The thing that rocks about the SB is the whole week parties around town before the game. I attended most of the Bronco ones and found myself partying with the Leprauchan, the barrel man, all kinds of outrageous characters and Colorado figures like the Denver mayor and anyone who was anybody there at the time. That was the fun part, the game experience was a letdown and of course the fact we lost big after holding the lead at half time didn’t help any.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

I’d take watching an AFC championship in Denver over going to a Superbowl anytime, I was lucky enough to be at the “fumble” AFC championship game at Mile High and that was BY FAR the best game experince I have ever felt and will ever feel in my life. There never has been a bigger game at Mile High and I was there and will take that pleasure to my grave. Just remembering all of us fans staying in the stands for a full half hour after the game chanting SUPER BOWL, SUPER BOWL… and carrying that into the stairways on out of the stadium is the best Bronco high I have ever had.

  15. Yovi21 says:

I’ve been a Broncos fan since i was 8, and I turned 8 in ’99. just in time to not see denver win a SB. I want to see us win the big one!!! the greatest game I’ve been able to experience was the patriots broncos playoff game in ’05. but I am and always will be a denver fan, so Ill be here when they do it again!!!

  16. baylinorcrush says:

    Good for you Yovi.

  17. Orange_Crusher says:

I’m confused about how we play the 2009 season but the winner is considered the 2010 SB champion? or the 2010 season will end in a 2011 SB champion… ya know what I mean?

It just sounds a little off to me? idk?

  18. Yovi21 says:

Thanks Bay, that sounds like the greatest thing ever! I’ve been to several denver games with my dad and I’m not sure there is a better feeling, getting to the stadium hours before the game, watching all the tailgaters, seeing 76,000 people having the time of their lives all at once, and being able to see the players that make this game the best in the world! ah I can’t wait to go back!!!

  19. Orange_Crusher says:

    bay,

Thanks for getting me the answer to the SD SB teams… you’re a wealth of football knowledge…

    Bronc On Bro!!!

  20. baylinorcrush says:

That’s what happens when you play the regular season in a year but the SB in the next, but actually teams are known to be the champions for the year of the regular season, like we won it all in 97 and 98, even so the SB were played in 98 and 99, I think they only refer to a superbowl year by when it’s actually played when they refer to the super bowl history type of thing. Yeah it can get confusing…

  21. baylinorcrush says:

No prob, it’s more interesting than what my wife is watching tonight, and I went out to a late party last night so I need to recover, no party for this big boy tonight, the body doesn’t recover like it used to, LOL.

  22. Orange_Crusher says:

haha.. my wife wants me to go in and watch a ppv movie that we have rented twice and fallen asleep to twice, (last night) but if we watch it agin real fast we won’t have to pay again…hahahahahaha!!!! I guess I’ll appease her and save $2.99…haha, I think I’m about to fall asleep just thinking about it….. later bro..

  23. sndvl says:

Tebow winning the big one in big D, thats a great scenario to ponder!
I for one did say Gaff would be our #1 this year baylin! What do I win? lol
And I have to disagree that Orton is a one track minded QB. I mean, when you have Brandon Marshall to throw to, why would you look anywhere else???? With him out of the picture (grrrrr), it forces Orton to spread the ball. Thats why I believe he will have an outstanding season his second year in the system! If he starts. All 16 games. Without injuries.
    GO BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!!

  24. baylinorcrush says:

The one track mind thing is something I kind of said to be funny, but last year he did act that way not only with Marshall, when Marshall did not play, he one tracked mind it to Gaffney, let’s hope him being more in tune with the McD system this year will allow him to look at his second and third options. I’m not holding my breath though, could be hazardous to my health, LOL.

  25. sndvl says:

Not really bay, it would only last til you passed out. Then you would begin spontaneously breathing again! lol
I know what you mean. And its a totally valid argument. But I believe that was a game plan devised by a childish McD in an attempt to prove to a certain player that its the system…IMO.
I think Orton knows the system, and a lot of that one track, was a security blanket for him in his first year. I really do believe Orton can have a great year, given the chance, which leads to good things. But its not my QQ, its McD’s QQ. And his career hangs in the balance.
I never did get your take on how long do we wait for that elusive playoff berth…

  26. sndvl says:

Go back and look at the tape from the Thanksgiving night game. The Philly game too. The ball was being spread around!

  27. baylinorcrush says:

I don’t like watching tapes, but it sounds about right, as far as I’m concerned no playoffs this year but likely next year. You might of missed a specific post a while back when I’m thinking that McD might have gotten a deal from Bowlen guaranteeing him the full length of his 4 year contract before going ahead and drafting Tebow, since the guy is potentially a little further from being ready than other first round pick QB’s. Remember Bowlen is the first one who lead us to know we were going to draft a QB, he has been in on it since the start. Just saying that way McD is not on the hot seat quite yet and can get things done on a better schedule for Tebow to win long term. Obviously if he doesn’t get deep into the playoffs by his 4th year (2012) all deals are off. This is just me thinking, it is not based on anything anyone said.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway, my point is due to the drafting Tebow thing I don’t think McD will be on the hot seat for at least a couple more years regardless of performance, could be totally off on that, but that’s what my gut tells me. Tebow bought him time regardless.

  29. Yovi21 says:

I hope Orton can spread the ball around but when you have a guy who can catch 14 passes (gaffney) in a game and a guy who can do 21 (Marshall) I think both should get the ball, and when you have eddie royal who had 91 receptions his rookie season (2nd all time in rookie receptions i believe) and he doesnt have a receiving TD all season I know thats not his fault!! I think Orton can be a good QB but he NEEDS to be able to feel comfortable with all the receivers on the team! Thats just my opinion of orton but there is always time to change!

  31. eternalorangeandblue says:

    dumb idiot justin sider

  32. eternalorangeandblue says:

Yea Yovi and orange crusher I know what you mean. That feeling is irreplaceable. I remember my very first game was the 1998 division game against the miami dolphins when we CRUSHED the living crap out of them at mile high and went on to win our back to back championship.

  33. florio's_mom says:

Our goal is the superbowl, not make the playoffs.

I would rather wait a year until we become solid team that will be a superbowl contender then be a one hit wonder this year.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry to hear that the football world in general and the Denver Broncos in particular lost one of their great, Stan Jones, one of the great minds behind the Orange Crush just passed away. He was the Defensive line coach during that period and excelled in football in general his entire life. Do yourselves a favor and read the article about him posted on this site. Condoleances to his family and all his friends.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

Florio, since we haven’t been in the playoffs for 5 years, I think hoping to get in the playoffs first, then deep in the playoffs second is a sensible approach to wanting to ultimately get back to the Super Bowl, hence I agree whole heartidly that we are better off allowing McD a year or two to build sound structure enough to give us the opportunity to go all the way. Which brings the debate we have had to the table, is it better to let Tebow at it now so he can get his legs under him quicker to be ready for the future as we know he is the guy McD wants at the helm eventually, or do we keep Orton the starter for one more year because he give us a better shot at winning a couple more games than Tebow at this time but hence setting Tebow’s future back a year?

It’s a loaded question, very hard to decipher, on one hand Tebow waiting out a year will help him gaining valuable understanding of the system without being thrown into the fire, on the other hand by sitting on the sidelines for a year he will start at point zero next year as far as on field game day experience and will most likely have a difficult time of it early specially if we don’t have the running game ticking. On one hand Orton may have a much better grasp of the system this year so he improves greatly and spreads the ball around to everybody and makes a strong run this year to get us to the playoffs, on the other hand Orton reached his full potential last year and regardless of how much more he knows the system all he knows is to rely and force it to his main receiving target, probably Gaffney, and we end up nearly mediocre missing the playoffs again.

I think I personally would take the Tebow route now, because both routes (Tebow or Orton) involve risks and gambles, so why not take the route of the future now. Tebow highly motivated character basically is an insurance that regardless of how tough his first year is, it will have no lasting effect on him. Regular “don’t throw a rookie QB into the fire unless you absolutely have no other option” rules may not apply here. Another strong point that would lead me to lean the Tebow way now is the injured/rebuilt O line. Imagine what Orton can do, or cannot do, behind a line that doesn’t protect him very well and doesn’t offer a great running game. He is probably as ill equipped as any QB out there to deal with that, no mobility, no pocket presence and no quick thought process on his options, all of that could result in very poor results I’m afraid. Bottom line I see little gain to play Orton this year but much greater odds of mediocrity. Granted he might go 9-7 but that would fall short of making the playoffs anyway, so even if Tebow can only go 7-9 what have we lost? We gained a year is my point.

All that being said, Quinn will probably be the starter QB, LOL.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

And of course for all the bloggers who think we can win 10 or more games this year the above post was a total waste of time, LOL. If I thought Orton can get us to that kind of record, I would have no choice but to start him, but I don’t. hence the above post train of thought.

  37. baylinorcrush says:

And to the ones who think we can win 10 or more games with Tebow or Quinn at the helm this year, well I have a bridge I’d like to sell you…

Just my opinions, and I hope they are all proven wrong and we win the SB this year with whoever is our QB.

  38. Orange_Crusher says:

I hope you can let me make payments on that bridge with a fixed rate low interest 15 year loan, because I think I’m buying…

Timtanium Tebow can win 10 games this year…
    Quality Quinn maybe 9
    Ordinary Orton 8

Maybe I should have picked Timtanium to win 15 games and that way their jersey numbers match their capability…lol

    ILMSDTB!!!!!!!

  39. baylinorcrush says:

    SOLD.

  40. champrox24 says:

is there going to be a fan fair this year?

  41. Orange_Crusher says:

I agree with every single thing in your above article except one thing. you think Orton will win one or two more games than TT and I think just the opposite on that one little issue.

If your thinking is that Tebow will make more mistakes and have more turn overs than Orton, I like to look at the stats on both guys over the last four years. It’s a fair comparison in the turnover catagory I think…

    Orton last four years:
    9,121 yards passing = 51 TD / 39 INT
    163 yards rushing = 3 TD / 11 FUMBLES

    Tebow last four years:
    9,286 yards passing = 88TD / 16 INT
    2,947 yards rushing = 57 TD / 0 FUMBLES

Man I bout fell out my chair when I saw that Timtanium never fumbled the football… unbelievable!!!

That being said, I really feel that it’s the Bronco Defense that will win 10 games this year. We just need a good QB that can get more first downs and keep the D rested better…jomho

    ILMSDTB!!!!!

  42. Orange_Crusher says:

It just occured to me that KO has more fumbles trying not to lose than TT has going balls out to win…

Just goes to show you cant win by trying not to lose, which is one of the main problems I have with the Ortman…

    jomho…

  43. Orange_Crusher says:

okay i just came up with an new nickname for Orton….

    The Ørtman……haha

  44. baylinorcrush says:

Good research OC, however you are comparing apples and oranges, Orton’s NFL stats to Tebow’s college stats, a more insightful look would be Orton’s stats at Purdue, that’s where he played in college if I remember correctly. But there is no mistaking that Tebow is one of the greatest stat QB all time in college, but like he says himself at this point he is satisfied just learning, NFL D’s coming after you is slightly different than college D’s, LOL. He has plenty to learn before he can get us to the playoffs, like a whole season of starting this season would be good, that’s why I think it might be best for him to get thrown to the wolves now. He is a gladiator and gladiators belong in the lions pit. It would be a pity to just have him watch the carnage from the sidelines. The point about a rookie QB being able to win ten games rests like you said with the Defense being able to dominate and win games for you and also with having a great running game like the Jets did last year for Sanchez. Well, at this point we have shown to have neither. Granted on paper we improved in both areas (questionable at the running game though) but so far to me it’s only worth the paper it’s written on, all I remember that’s worthy to me of evaluating the upcomig season is that we went 2-8 in the last 10 games we played being able to stop nobody on the ground and gaining very little on the same. That doesn’t bode well for a rookie QB to win 10 games. Just my opinion.

  45. baylinorcrush says:

I’ll save you the time, here are Orton’s career stats at Purdue:

Career: Purdue career leader with 2.43 interception percentage (23 interceptions in 947 attempts) … ranks fourth with .581 completion percentage, fifth with 947 passing attempts, fifth with 550 completions, fifth with 6,247 passing yards, fifth with 6,451 yards total offense, seventh with 32 passing touchdowns, 11th with 119.8 passing efficiency and tied for 14th with 23 interceptions … has three 300-yard passing games (two of them 400-plus) … third quarterback in school history to start three bowl games, following Mark Herrmann (1978-80) and Drew Brees (1998-2000).

  46. baylinorcrush says:

And I agree with you the Tebow stat about his having no fumbles with that many yards gained and TD scored is nothing short of amazing, worth re-posting:

    2,947 yards rushing = 57 TD / 0 FUMBLES

  47. florio's_mom says:

    Bay,

I posted a breakdown over 4 years in which tebow starts this years and one he doesn’t. I think that if he is our future, put him in now so he can gain more experience and get more comfortable quicker.

I mean just think about it, if he sits all year this year, then he will basically be a rookie all over again next year. Hence delaying any improvements in our record or playoff appearances.

  48. florio's_mom says:

    Also,

Starting first round rookie QB’s is hit or miss, but I’ve never heard of a first round QB who sat for half a season or more and become a good QB. *cough cough* jay cutler.

  49. Orange_Crusher says:

“Amazing” is a good word… I think even “Miraculous” is befitting that fantastic feat of football security!!!..

Dude, I think Timtanium could beat up Iron Man….lol

  50. Orange_Crusher says:

    Bay,

Sometimes I am almost certain that the Denver Post writers are just responding to our conversations….. haha

Go read that article they have up today…. haha
