Thomas Learned from Former Teammate

October 27th, 2011 - 3:23pm by Gray Caldwell

Demaryius Thomas first caught a glimpse of Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson in high school.

Suffice it to say he was impressed.

When it came down to making his college choice, he followed Johnson to Georgia Tech.

“He was one of the reasons I went there because of the type of offense, the type of player he was — the big, fast receiver,” Thomas said.

The two receivers spent just one year together with the Yellow Jackets. When Johnson was a senior, Thomas redshirted as a freshman.

“Basically I was just learning a lot of stuff from him,” Thomas said. “Most of the time it was reading the defense or coming off of press coverage and stuff like that, running routes.”

The two have kept in touch since their days as teammates. In fact, Thomas said he and Johnson spoke on the phone as recently as last night, just gauging how each other feels heading into Sunday’s matchup.

As for Johnson’s success so far this season, Thomas said he’s not surprised, putting it simply:

“He’s a beast.”

INJURY REPORT

For the Broncos, Brian Dawkins (illness) and Marcus Thomas (knee) were new additions to the injury report. Dawkins did not participate Thursday, and Thomas was limited. For the second straight day, Julius Thomas (ankle) had full participation. Elvis Dumervil (ankle) and Willis McGahee (hand) did not participate for the second consecutive day.

For the Lions, RB Jahvid Best (concussion), WR Rashied Davis (foot), DT Nick Fairley (foot), DT Sammie Hill (ankle) and G Rob Sims (illness) did not participate in Thursday’s practice. T Gosder Cherilus (knee), CB Chris Houston (back), S Vincent Fuller (elbow), QB Matthew Stafford (ankle) and DE Willie young (calf) had limited participation. DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, who didn’t practice Wednesday listed as “non-injury,” was taken off the injury report for Thursday.

Well for baseball fans evrywhere in Texas time has come for them to see if their beloved Rangers can get their first title ever, went to the pub the other night, that is all they are talking about, seems like football does not exist in these parts any longer, at least for now. Then it’s back to Longhorns, and Texans and Cowboys, maybe it’s best if they stick with baseball, LOL.

Lions best RB is out. Broncos best RB is out. Better passing team wins.
    Lions 27
    Broncos 13

Tied at 2 -2 in STL.

Sorry Bay – I think STL will extend it and take it. Pitching looks awful for both teams tonight.

  4. daddybronc says:

daddy is a blog killer – can’t say stuff like that to sports fans.

the tebowing thing is disgusting. but would you expect any more from a society that poses dead and makes it a craze. no wander the world hates us.

I probably jumped the gun on the decker wanting out, but I still stand by how I feel about wide outs.

  6. daddybronc says:

    ? poses dead

  7. RH709 says:

Yeah. Give Tebow some TEs. Sit back and watch the show.

  8. daddybronc says:

Put Tebow in and sit back and watch the show – always entertaining. Question is whether he can win enough.

  9. sndvl says:

Decker has shown more potential to be a star WR then Tebow has shown to be a star QB.

I’d hate to see our 2nd best wideout ride out. So much talent has been purged from Denver it’s tough to watch. Or decide on buying a jersey.
I mean, since Clady is no longer the blindside does that mean he loses blindside money?
What about O-lineman. How long will they keep taking blame for poor pass protection when it may not be them. TRB already hinted at the RB scenario. What’s that leave. TEs. Oh who saw Tebow flat out miss Fells at the 50. Wide open. Easy completion. For a long gain. If not to the house.

    At least we have Tebowing…

(of course this is Ortonistic pessimism what would I know)

  10. RH709 says:

Tebow did miss a couple of guys who were wide open. Live and learn. I’ll complain if he overlooks those same passes when KC comes to town.

  11. daddybronc says:

Ahhh Sndvl – feeling your pain with the 6th game of the world series. Definitely Ortonistic Pessimism – and I really don’t want to get rid of Deck – but now that Rec. core has gotten healthy and Broncos needing to be deep in the run game. Just saying Deck is expendable – especially if he comes up with an attitude. I’ve said it many times – attitude / lockerroom chemistry far more important in a winning team than talent,

    Denver Broncos 23

  13. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Nobody wants to get rid of Decker and Decker has not said he wants to go anywhere … lotta people getting ahead of them selves.

If Vick, Cam, VY can make it work to some extent its doable … the WRs and RBs have never complained about them … nor has the oline.

Its more frustrating in the early phases because Tebow is learning alot … and I mean ALOT … last week was by far his worst game … Last year … WRs weren’t wanting for catches. Lloyds production didn’t drop. IN sandiegos 2nd half … the passing was there. Miami was by far his worst game to date … and he will get better with time. Decker is the same guy that has fumbled many times last year and i think once or twice this year .. he is working on his game still and so is Tebow … the goal is to grow together … and he understands that. He just said its frustrating at time sbut he knows he got stuff to learn and so does Tebow.

    TRB

Going into extra innings in STL.

  15. daddybronc says:

Starting the 11th with both teams scoring 2 in the 10th – it’s not football but the drama is intense!!!

  16. daddybronc says:

TRB – the problem is the number of passes that the WR’s now have to compete for.

  17. badluck727 says:

No WRs dont have to compete for passes Tebow cant get them the ball anyway

  18. 4Eva-A-Bronco says:

Ok thank you all that replied to the post. Merely speculation about Decker leaving, makes me feel better for now. I will also say that if Decker does not want to bronco come seasons end, then good riddance. Well I do believe that tebow will play better as well. I still think our team is going to be fine and we shall find out, come this Sunday. Let’s go broncos kick some lion tail.

I don’t remember much winning against the elite teams with Lloyd’s style of play either. Who is he to judge now that he is gone. What, now he can decide what side of the fence he wants to be on. When he was here he couldn’t make up his mind. A lot like his style of play throughout his whole career. ONE SEASON he makes up his mind to put together a good year statistically. Big deal. It was with KO, and what did that get us? 3 or 4 wins total between last year and the start of this year. Tebow has 2 wins in 4 starts and one of those starts is without you B-LLOYD.
P.S. Thanks for going back to where you belong, with McDaniels.
