Thomas Agrees to Terms

July 31st, 2010 - 3:30pm by Gray Caldwell

Demaryius Thomas

With training camp just a day away, it’s a full house in Dove Valley. Demaryius Thomas agreed to terms with the team Saturday, joining the eight other 2010 draft picks who have already signed with the club.

Thomas, a 6-foot-3, 224-pound receiver averaged more than 25 yards per catch last season and ranked second in the ACC in receiving yards per game, began practicing a little later than the rest of the team’s rookies during OTAs due to a foot injury. But when he found the field, his work ethic impressed his coaches.

“I think that everyone has seen this guy make tremendous catches, and then there’s been some other ones that he’s dropped,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said earlier this offseason. “I think that comes with playing and knocking off some of the rust.”

“He hasn’t made the same error a lot,” he continued. “In terms of trying to get better at the things that he has struggled with or made an error with — he has really worked hard to try to fix those. He’s had a great attitude and approach.”

Thomas said he feels he improved “a lot” throughout OTAs, and he’s excited to put the pads on during training camp.

As a senior at Georgia Tech, Thomas was a third-team All-American selection by the Associated Press in 2009, a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award — given to the top receiver in the collegiate ranks — and first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference.

In a run-dominated Georgia Tech offense, Thomas amassed 1,154 receiving yards and eight touchdowns as a senior, bringing his career totals to 120 receptions, 2,339 yards and 14 touchdowns with the Yellow Jackets.

To put his production in perspective, Georgia Tech led the ACC in 2009 by averaging more than 295 rushing yards per game. The Yellow Jackets ranked last in the ACC in passing offense, yet Thomas found a way to excel. His 82.4 yards receiving per game last season came when his team averaged just 126.7 yards through the air per game.

Thomas said he believes he can transfer that production to the NFL, especially in Denver.

“I think that I’ll fit well,” he said when he was drafted. “I’m a playmaker.”

  6. Danso says:

Well done Bronco mgmt. For all those who complain about signings etc. I’d say they got the job done timely. Here we go- go TEAM Broncos

  7. skivett says:

I think he will be a huge impact, but maybe not until later in the season, because the offense he played in college was nothing like what he has to learn now. I think he will make some big plays right away, because he is such a gifted athlete, but once he gets used to the pro game, he can be just as dominant as Marshall was. Remember, Marshall didn’t break out until his 2nd season. So we may have to wait, but this guy will pay off in the long run.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

Ok, Thomas day, no hold outs, done with the business end of things for this year, let’s get on with the football part of it. Tomorrow, first full team TC practice! How refreshing….

  9. baylinorcrush says:

    Final money talks, I hope:

Demaryius Thomas, the Broncos final unsigned draft pick, has agreed to a five-year deal with the Broncos worth $12.155 million, with $9.35 million guaranteed. According to a league source, the max value of Thomas’ contract is $15.5 million with escalators.

  10. SiriusBroncosFan says:

Thomas will definitely make a few plays this season. With a 6′ 3″ frame, how could he not make a few big catches?

  11. baylinorcrush says:

I said all along that all the draft picks should be signed in time this year since we had no high first round pick (Moreno held out last year, he was #11 pick), glad to see that was the case, anything less would of been real disappointing.

  12. SiriusBroncosFan says:

Does anyone else think that Eddie Royal looks like Mini-Me next to Demaryius Thomas?

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Thomas has all the intangibles, he just has to learn how to run routes, he has done very little of that in his career, so it’s still a huge learning curve for him, patience will be key for him this year, like with the O line, like with the QQ, this year will require patience on O all around, while the D can get after it and hopefully keep us in many games, just my opinion.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

Well, yeah, Royal is only 5’10″.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, nice to have the blog running smoothly again.

  16. SiriusBroncosFan says:

    5’10″? I thought he was like 3’8″

  17. baylinorcrush says:

Not a big Royal fan I take it…

  18. SiriusBroncosFan says:

Oh, no. I think Royal’s a great receiver. I just think it’s funny when you see the two standing together. You’d think Demaryius’s son was on the field with him.

  19. dirty yella says:

Nice, I think we might see a potential R.O.Y…. Orten gunna make it rain on him like there is a Quinn Tebow fire under his a$$!

  20. strandoftds says:

Man I`m so stoked that Thomas has finally signed. Everybody is now on board. Yaaaaaah!!!!!!! And from what I read in the Post this morning Mays is excellent on special teams.

  21. BeastFromEast92 says:

    WTF…………is wrong with this blog???????????????

OMG, I am sooooooo excited. This offseason has suprisingly flown by and football has finally came back around! We can finally have EVERYONE in camp for a true competition!! We have sooo much potential at every position and I know that the best player will win that job and bring us 10-11 wins this year!!! Come on boys, lets shock the world!!

I love me some Broncos Country!!!

  23. 07elway says:

Boy oh boy is this a relief!!!!! Got Bay-Bay signed just in time for the big day! I can’t stop smiling over here. This training camp is gonna be out of this world crazy with all the competitions going on for starting jobs… I seriously cannot wait any longer. Thank God is starts tomorrow! ha

Big round of applause to our stellar management for getting Doom and all our rookies signed on time. Impressive… they all made me anxious but job well done.

    Go get ‘em boys!!!!
    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!

  24. strandoftds says:

Let the games begin. GIMME SOME TNT!!!!!!

  25. broncosfreak30 says:

Let me also just say that I am very happy that we haven’t suffered any bad injuries and hopefully we won’t. Clady should be ready to go and everyone else looks really good. It seems like a lot of teams our having unfortunate injuries right now. Foxworth with the Ravents, Dez with Dallas, Jackson with Eagles, Smith with Panthers…the list goes on and on! Let’s just hope and pray for a VERY HEALTHY training camp and preseason!!!

I love me some Broncos Country!!!

  26. broncofanlvnm says:

Like rbf1 coined. T n T is coming soon! Can’t wait to see them explode into action!

  27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    SiriusBroncosFan,

Yea eddie is only 5’10. but every time he stood near the beast who was 6’4 and Thomas who is 6’3, he looks short. My measuring stick for Royal in value to this team is Desean Jackson. They are so similar in many ways, both 5’10, both speed guys, both drafted in the second round this same year. Only diff is Desean is slightly faster but skinnier, Royal is fast and better built. So my motto is always, whatever Desean can do, Royal should be able to do better.

Glad Thomas is on, out of the draft, him and Danario Alexander were the only WRs I wanted to fill the shoes of my WR hero, not rod smith, my other hero, you know the one lol. Hopefully he is a combination of both heroes. Ive always had a thing for WRs, love the position with a passion, best of luck Bay Bay. TRB out….

  28. broncofanlvnm says:

You know what the best part of this last signing is? We are actually going into TC with ZERO distractions!!!!!!!

  29. Danso says:

Isn’t this sweet- everyone on board & ready to go for tomorrow-I think we are getting started on a great run for the next few years. A TEAM is being built the right way. Go Broncos!

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, the year of the drama Queens is over, good luck to the Dolphins and the Bears. It’s nice not to be in the news of late for all the wrong reasons, a breath of fresh air has permeated the Rocky Mountain area once again.

  31. KnowshonForSure says:

I can only see one comment.

  32. weareamr says:

Let the competition begin! May the best rise to his potential and become a badazz for the Orange and Blue. Let McGenius flourish as a coach and his team reach the bowl game this year and for years to come. Lets play some football.

    Go Broncos!!!

  33. baylinorcrush says:

I see many of you guys having trouble with the site, everything is working well for me now, they shut down the blog from last night 10 pm until 8 am this morning for maintenance and I had some issues this morning after 8 am, but it’s ok now, for me anyway.

  34. strandoftds says:

I`m looking forward to hear about the training camp battles. It`s gonna be good, thats for sure.

  35. ukbroncos says:

Bay, Did you see Klis actually use the word “quandary” whilst talking about Orton? See article starting “Battle has begun…..”. Perhaps he reads you as well?

So who is going to be at QB when I finally get to see the broncos play after 24 years at Wembley?

  36. baylinorcrush says:

ukbroncos, I believe you are absolutely correct, Klis reads us like we read him, and he is a smart enough man not to fall into plagiarism, so he still has the QQ, but he turned it into the Quarterback Quandary, not my patented Quarteback Quagmire, LOL.

  37. baylinorcrush says:

Reading the article I couldn’t see the word quandary, but it was implied if nothing else. However in this quagmire, the one who is really getting the shaft so far is Quinn, hardly anyone in the media bothers to even mention his name when talking of the possibilities at QB, and just 4 months ago he was the media darling, news one day, relegated to the curb the next, brutal.

  38. dcftcollins says:

thank you no problems with the blog now

  39. dynogolf says:

With Demaryius Thomas now officially a Bronco, the Josh McDaniels era is finally underway. As exciting as it was to watch Cutler to Marshall, their negatives far outweighed their positives. I respect McD for cleaning out the locker room and making character a priority. Now lets hope these “good” guys can perform on the field. I’m excited and proud to call myself a Bronco fan!!

  40. royalbroncofan1 says:

Alright !!! Great news again!! Glad to see we’ve got Thomas on board!!
It’s going to be a transition to the NFL and the speed of the game. Demaryius no doubt has the skills and discipline to excel at the next level!!

    Congratulations -Demaryius Antwon Thomas!!!!!!!

Welcome to Broncos Country !!!!! :-)

Knowshon carted of the field with a right leg injusry and bucky also hurt left leg.

  42. KnowshonForSure says:

    According to Sherman Woods

At approximately 10:00 a.m., running back Knowshon Moreno was carted to the locker room with an apparent right leg injury. Correll Buckhalter also appears to have suffered a left leg injury.

  43. baylinorcrush says:

I wonder how the Arrington trade looks now…

  44. KnowshonForSure says:

Lets just hope nothing serious. I got a feeling the Arrington deal will look silly, if they aint healthy enough to play in the regular season.

Share ShareBroncos running back Knowshon Moreno was just carted off the field with what appears to be an injury to his right knee or ankle. After reaching the team’s headquarter doors, Moreno had to be assisted off the cart by members of the Broncos’ training staff.

Moreno is the Broncos’ starting tailback who gained 947 yards, on 3.8 yards per carry, last season. He was the Broncos’ No. 12 overall draft pick last season.

Moreno’s injury came as the Broncos were lining for offense vs. defense contact drill.

  46. KnowshonForSure says:

Knowshon is someone we cant afford to loose, so lets hope its nothing major.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, since you just got your new handle it would be a shame for it to go to waste…. For sure, not so sure?

  48. baylinorcrush says:

On the other hand I have been dying to have contact practices with pads on, I always say it helps separate the men from the boys, and invariably you will have a handful of players going down at TC, it happens to every team, that’s why you need to be loaded at every position, and in my viem McD has clearly failed to load us at the RB position this season. I just posted another comment about that on the latest blog, so I won’t go on about how disappointed I am with this part of it again.

  49. bronconation28 says:

about damn time they sign thomas

  50. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, KFS thanks for your prompt reporting on the injuries, you beat everyone to it, where did you get that info from Sherman Woods, or is it a secret, LOL.
