The Draft — Covered

April 24th, 2009 - 4:04pm by Gray Caldwell

So the 2009 NFL Draft kicks off at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday afternoon, and DenverBroncos.com has got you covered.

(Check out the Broncos 2009 Draft page here.)

Starting about an hour before the draft begins, we’ll begin a live blog that will run all the way through the end of the first round. There you can discuss any big moves or surprises in the early goings of the draft, as well as comment on the Broncos’ first round selections — Nos. 12 and 18.

We’ll keep you up-to-date on all the picks and any moves the Broncos make.

In addition, Broncos TV will have exclusive footage of Head Coach Josh McDaniels, General Manager Brian Xanders and the rest of the front office in the Broncos’ “War Room” at Dove Valley as they prepare to make the team’s first two selections.

We will also post video and information on all 10 of the team’s draft picks from both days to go along with quotes from McDaniels and the draftees.

There will be daily wrap-ups on Saturday and Sunday, as well.

On Sunday, for rounds 3-7, we will begin a blog in the morning that will be updated when the Broncos make their selections. In addition, the team’s two first-round selections are scheduled to arrive at Dove Valley Sunday, so we will have video of their introductory press conference.

In other words, DenverBroncos.com has all of the Broncos draft day coverage you need. So stick with us on Saturday and Sunday as the team makes two first-round selections for the first time in franchise history, and amasses the most picks in one draft since 1999.

finally im first to post. YAAAYYY. I like tyson jackson or raji at 12 and then the next best defensive player at 18 then ron brace with are 2 round pick

  2. archangel77 says:

bronco#80; I agree with you about Ron Brace. With McDaniel’s stipulating that the Broncos are not going to use their first two picks to move up; a player like Brace is more likely to be drafted then Raji who will likely be off the board before we pick at 12. Brace could be that “big body” that McDaniel’s talks about. The problem with Brace is his lack of versatility. Whether in a 4-3 or a 3-4 Brace is a straight up Tackle who has virtually no lateral movement. McDaniel’s mentioned in his latest presser that our team would be lucky to bring 6 D-Linemen to a game so a player like Brace who can not collapse the pocket or move laterally may not be able to bring enough to the table to be drafted at that spot. I agree that Jackson appears to be the perfect prototypical 5 technique and his stock has been rising. Another guy that I like and may be a surprise pick by the Broncos is Robert Ayers from Tenn. During workouts at the Sr. Bowl; Ayers ran over some of the best seniors there and showed better speed off the corner than I thought he had. Go to the NFL Network combine videos and watch the tape on Ayers. It’s impressive! I think that the first two rounds of the draft could look like this:
    12. B.J. Raji,Tyson Jackson, Knowshon Moreno, Clay Mathews
    18. Percy Harvin, Brain Cushing, Josh Freeman, Ron Brace
    Round Two:
    1. Connor Barwin, Patrick White, Chris Clemons, Ricky Jean Francois (3rd round).
Of all the the individuals at the number 18 pick I think Clay Matthews and Percy Harvin are the most intriguing. Harvin brings amazing explosion and versatility (can you imagine a speed set with Eddie Royal and Harvin lined up at the number 2 and slot receiver spots, not to mention having a kick off set with Royal and Harvin waiting to return the kick). Matthews, I believe, has the ability to be the true star coming out of USC. For this guy it is simply in the blood. His performance at USC is amazing when you consider he was a walk on and did not start until his Sr. year. In two years he could be the steal of the draft, even for a first rounder. The title of steal of the draft though will most likely go to the DE/OLB from Cincinnati, Connor Barwin. This kid projects as a football player pure and simple and has the physicality to play at three different positions his rookie year (DE, OLB, and TE). You can’t beat that kind of multi purpose guy. I can’t wait for the draft.

  3. Greatness007 says:

lol Bronco80 I dont think he will be there, but a good pick. If we don’t trade we need the best weakside LB on the board. So if Sanchez is not at 12 they will pick a LB. I think Raji and Jackson will be gone.

  4. Greatness007 says:

The Broncos are in talks as we type with Jacksonville to move to 8! All I think there willing to give is the 12th pick to move , but who knows if they will give move. All I know it won’t be the 12th and 18th pick.

  5. archangel77 says:

There is also some scuttlebutt that Kansas City is talking trade with the Broncos for the number 3 pick. I think that McDaniel’s is sincere when he says that their comfortable where they are sitting. It would have to be a phenomenal package for them to move in either direction at this point.

  6. Greatness007 says:

archangel good first post! I think all the old New England connections are just giving each other steals and I won’t be surprised if we deal with KC, but the Jacksonville talk is more serious!

  7. archangel77 says:

Greatness007; thanks for the news about the Jacksonville talks. Oddly, when there was talk about trading Cutler Jacksonville was the team that I thought we would deal him to for their number eight pick, therefore I think that you may be correct. If they do trade up who do you think they have targeted for the number 8 pick?

  8. archangel77 says:

Greatness007; I also agree with the New England connection. It will be interesting to see how long that lasts when players start disappearing off the draft boards that McDaniel’s and Xanders have targeted.

  9. Greatness007 says:

Sadly Sanchez. People think because I say there gonna get Sanchez means I like the move wrong. I know they would put DJ at inside, so Inside LB is locked up.Now they have so many hybrids there tryna coach up. So I don’t think they will go that high to get one. It’s a theory that we need a pass rushing NT, but in a 3-4 there suppose to just eat up blocks to let the LB’s rome. So to go that high it will be a QB. what else would there be and think of the money they would be paying that person. If Orackpo ( Ithink thats how you spell his name) he falls I’d love to get him.

  10. archangel77 says:

Greatness007, that is one of the smartest things that I have heard so far regarding this years draft. Sanchez is overrated and there simply is not enough tape on him to gauge whether he is the real deal or not. He reminds me off Matt Leinart. How overrated has that guy turned out to be. The USC QBs have an unbelievable amount of coaching support and player talent surrounding them which greatly skews their over all performance. I agree that Orakpo would be a great selection at that spot. The only reason that I didn’t have him at that spot was the idea that he will be gone by the time Cleveland drafts at #5 or Buffalo at #11. I really hope that Denver keeps both picks. The idea of being able to add an offensive and defensive weapon to this team in the first round is a rarity that Denver has not had.

  11. Greatness007 says:

I was thinking that Cleveland was gonna take Crabtree. The notion that he had a bad visit can be takin both ways. There are some in their building that didn’t like the fact that, when he came thre he asked for some water when he spoke to the coaches. When the water got their it was warm, so he spit it back in the bottle abd asked for a cold one. lol Silly huh? I think they might still draft him, but I think he would go there too. Buffalo just traded their left tackle. Their gonna replace him , my thinking is why not do it at 11. If KC don’t move they will pick Jackson. lol If they move they will move to a spot were they still can take Jackson. They just don’t wanna pay all that money for him.

  12. McDanielsDomain09 says:

i actually really like the idea of harvin at 18. the offense is well known for short passes and then having the wr get the extra yards. and thts harvin’s specialty. But im glad to hear mcdaniels say its unlikely tht theyll trade up for a qb. its good to hear. but it doesnt mean it wont happen hes knda known for saying one thing and doing another. hahha. but im really excited about tomorro. but well see

  13. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

We have that “harvin” ability in Marshall AND Royal… they both have good speed and good moves to catch those short passes and turn ‘em big…

  14. Greatness007 says:

I don’t think he’s(Harvin) tough enough to play that Wes W. position. That will be Eddie. 3rd WR will be Gaffney, 4th Stockley, and 5th Chad. We all know who #1 is. We need 1 outside LB for the weakside. We might coach one up, if that’s the case DE will be the pick. WE have 2 so don’t be surprise if they use the other on a RB or a Corner. That if they don’t use it to go to #8. Like I said before the Pats connection for the old days been giving each other steals. So don’t be surprise if it happens in our favor tomorrow!

  15. Eddie man says:

Did you guys hear about Stafford signing with the lions this is the contract information six-year deal with the Detroit Lions worth $41.7 million guaranteed but can be worth up to $78 million.

  16. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Harvin is a chronic addict who is less talented than Eddie Royal, so why would we want him? I like this Ron Brace from Boston College and I also think Maualuga is a really good player. I’m really interested to see Josh Barrett’s progression but we’ll see how everything goes. It’s almost here. Make wise decisons Mickey D and X Man and as always, GO BRONCOS!!!

  17. Broncobailey99 says:

Ok… I think if we had a deffense than HECK YEA!… LET”S GET REY MAULALUGA!… but he’s not a 3rd down LB (as stated on NFL Network and elsewhere in sports news)… If we get a LB, he better be ready to lead that D on ALL downs… Rey is a GREAT run stopper… not so great pass defender…

So if in the future if there is “the next rey malaluga” than yea, lets get him… but we don’t need his “limit-ness?” (made up word)

  18. lynch4prez says:

Its just an opinion that Rey Maualuga isnt a 3rd down LB, he hasnt played a down in the NFL, on 1st 2nd or 3rd down, I’ve seen stranger things happen.. look at last year, the ‘experts’ were laughing at our pick of Royal, whos laughing now??

  19. Greatness007 says:

We won’t get Ray. DJ and Andre are playing inside. So where you gonna put him outside were he never played? W e wont pick him!

  20. mc says:

I hope we don’t pick Sanchez. I think Orton will do just fine for now. I hope we get Michael Hamlin from Clemson or Rashad Johnson from Alabama in the first rd. Cause , all that Dawkins needs is a mind for molding :)

  21. Greatness007 says:

If this late news thats comming out is true. Jets will move to 8 to get Crabtree. From what they say.(Jets) Broncos have reports of looking at 18 for QB. It will be Freeman or Sanchez if still there. Sad isn’t it? Washington told their local paper they won’t draft Sanchez!

  22. Greatness007 says:

Josh Barret will be the mind!

  23. Torain ATV fan says:

Hey Greatness, I would have preffered the 8th pick for us, but if the Jets use for crabtree it is fine. They were scheduled to take defense. So that leaves an extra player on our board 2 select.

  24. bronco-blaze says:

ok im officaly freaking out. This morning NFL network slipped up and The broncos were on the headlines at the bottom near what it said DRAFT:TRADES and something streamed along about the broncos trading some 1 for a 2010..and something else..im freaking out here. The took it off *of course* after i realized it. But it was at the very start of draft coverage. Can some one else confirm or tell me who we traded..I cant wait in anticipation ! =-( i have to be at prom dinner during our picks!! Nooooo

  25. Torain ATV fan says:

have u guys seen Jay Glazer’s final mock. I dont agree with it, but damn would i love it to be true. Gives us Tyson Jackson at 12 and brian orapkp at 18. That would be great. But not realistic.

  26. lynch4prez says:

im getting so antsy, time is just crawling by, all i hope for is that we dont pick a QB with any of our 5 top 84 picks.. in my perfect world we get Raji at 12 and Maualuga at 18, a lot of nay-sayers for Maualuga but i have the strongest gut feeling that if SD gets him we’re gonna be hating the guy for years to come, i think he has the most upside than any player on defense.. just my opinion

  27. louisianabroncofan says:

actually the perfect 1st round would be raji and tyson jackson. we would have to move up to get raji and trade our #18 and 3rd round this year and 2nd next year and get jackson with 12. that would make us significantly better. a line with raji, jackson, and marcus thomas/dumerville. we have great OLB in woodyard and williams (who should stay outside) and some pretty good ILB.

  28. Torain ATV fan says:

I dont think we should draft a players to take him away from another team. Ray will be good, but we have other needs.

    Lousianabronco,

i agree raji and jackson would be the ideal picks, but doubt we can get both

  29. Torain ATV fan says:

unless maybe we trade to the 8 spot. and thats still wishful thinking, i believe.

  30. SuperBowlBoundBroncos says:

If Tyson and Raji are gone by 12, I think we get Robert Ayers at 12 and either Moreno or Cushing at 18.

  31. dbroncos6 says:

how great will it be if we are able to trade our number 12 pick an get mark sanchez then get rey maualuga with the 18 pick

  32. louisianabroncofan says:

wishful thinking for sure ATV. but man i hope it happens. i do not like the idea of getting moreno or cushing. our running backs are not enough of a need considering our D. ayers is one that i would only take if alot of our other wants are gone and i dont think they will be. he may not fit well in a 3-4 and thats too high of a pick to chance it. we do not need cushing. we have decent OLB’s, i dont think he’s a top 20 nfl talent, and again have more pressing needs. by the way moreno will be a great player and if we do get him i wont be upset in any way. i’m hoping to see william moore get picked by us and i dont care if its round 2 or 3 i would love to draft him. he’s gonna be a good safety for a long time and he’s flying WAY under the radar.

  33. louisianabroncofan says:

i say no way on sanchez. lets see how orton and simms do this year and take care of the D. sanchez is way way way overrated in my opinion. next years QB’s will be better and if this season we have bad QB play we can use our 2 first round picks to move up to get colt mccoy or sam bradford. but you never know mcdaniels may turn orton or simms into a really good QB in his system and until we do know we should not get a QB. lets go after all D this offseason. we’ll see how the O does and then know more next year. for all we know we may be great offensively next year with who we have. we know for sure we’re not gonna be great defensively with who we have.

  34. JaZzyFrIzZlE says:

who of the first round talents, are considered “smart, teachable, and versatile” as far as defense goes? those were some of the things coach is looking for in who ever he drafts. I think cushing at 18 would be a great pick and jackson/raji at 12 would be very sweet.

  35. SuperBowlBoundBroncos says:

I agree with you louisianabroncofan, we should not get Sanchez, even though I like his talent. Hopefully, we can get Tyson or Raji with our 12 pick and then draft Ayers, Maybin, or Moreno at 18. I think that would be our best case scenario.

  36. Torain ATV fan says:

lousiana i agree we dont need RB nor cushing, especially not Ray.

  37. Torain ATV fan says:

that being said if Coach McDaniels defensive draft board is taken away 1st rd., i believe he is capable of trading a RB in the 1st

  38. Torain ATV fan says:

What do you guys think of this scenario. We trade the 1st and 3rd rd pick we got from Chi Town for Anquan Boldin. Therefore the trade from cutler, would be anquan and next years first. Just a thought.

  39. Torain ATV fan says:

we would have marshall and royal on the outside, and anquan on the slot.

  40. Torain ATV fan says:

    Superbowlbound,

I too like the idea of maybin if the top guys are gone.

  41. thatdude807 says:

Almost that time DENVERPOST said broncos have RAJI, TYSON JACKSON, & R.AYERS ranked in that order

  42. fanzforsanchez says:

The real fans here in co closest to the team know that if the broncos can get sanchez the teamm should immediately draft him.Now cumon broncos get him and solidify the position. We all know that kyle orton and chris simms are not the quarterbacks this team can count on.

  43. louisianabroncofan says:

i dont like it torain. again the last thing we need are recievers. maybe if we were okay on D and bmarsh was out 8 gms or something i would say anquan is too good to pass up on if given the chance but our D is so bad we have no choice but to go right after it and only it. dont forget we have brandon stokely and jabar gaffney on our team so we’re gonna be just fine. we do kinda need a punt and kickoff returner since eddie royal needs to be just a reciever now that he’s so good. i think we need to get derrick williams out of penn state in the third round to take care of that. i think he’s one of those that could be a better pro than college player and if he turns out to be a great returner it would help us out a bunch. i also dont think anquan would be too exited about coming to a team with a clear #1 and #2 already on the roster. i only would like a trade this year if it was to get bj raji in the top 10. and then like i said i would only give up the 18 not the twelve and maybe a third this year and a second next year. so again the only player in this draft worth trading up for is raji, other than him theres not much we just would have to have. two of the best positions in this years draft are WR and OT both of wich we have covered. so lets just get what we can and go kick some charger a@* next year and all will be well.

  44. dbroncos6 says:

hey wat if josh freeman is there at 18 do we take him or no?

  45. Torain ATV fan says:

hey fanforsanchez, u could be right. But i believe there is more talent at QB next year. so y not try and get 2 great defenders and hope kyle can get the job done. Which by the way i believe he can, we have 2 many weapons at our disposal that it would be difficult for him NOT To SUCEED. Just one opinion from a guy in el paso, who goes 2 home games every year. theres people who live in colorado but dont go to that many games. so loyalty comes from everywhere for bronco fans not just colorado.

  46. Torain ATV fan says:

your right lousiana. i was just bored, so thinking of what 2 talk about be 4 the draft starts. time is going slowly.

  47. louisianabroncofan says:

no fanzforsanchez we do not know that orton and simms are not the QB we need any more than we know that sanchez is. in mcdaniels system smart QB’s with decent decision making ability fourish and orton fits that bill very well. i think you are absolutely wrong about us needing sanchez wether your in colorado or canada. we need a whole heck of alot of help on defense, thats what we need. and i’m telling you sanchez is overratted. we just havent seen enough of him to know if he will be a good nfl qaurterback. no one has. smack.

  48. Torain ATV fan says:

im with u on the kicking a@@ part of the chargers.

  49. louisianabroncofan says:

i heard that atv. time is crawlin man.

  50. Torain ATV fan says:

too slow. i will tell u this those, imglad draft is today because i am tiredof hearing people say take ray, take ray, take ray, take ray.
