Tebow Acknowledges Need to Improve

January 2nd, 2012 - 10:12am by Kenny Legan

Quarterback Tim Tebow is a big reason why the Broncos went 7-4 in their last 11 games to finish the season as AFC West champs.

However, his performance Sunday showed that the second-year quarterback still has a lot of growing up to do in the NFL.

“Well, obviously when you lose it’s just not good enough, and for me it wasn’t good enough,” Tebow said. “I just have to get better and learn from my great coaches and just come out next week and try to be a better quarterback, a better leader and be a better player.”

Tebow finished Sunday’s game with just six pass completions in 22 attempts for 60 yards and an interception. He also fumbled the ball on a third-down run in the red zone in the second quarter that ended the Broncos’ most promising drive.

“As a quarterback you’ve just got to find a way to put your team in the end zone,” Tebow said. “We had a nice drive going, and I fumbled — and that was very disappointing — just trying to fight for extra yards. And we had other opportunities we just couldn’t take advantage of. We’ve just got to find a way.”

But the Broncos still have plenty of confidence in their quarterback, and made sure to tell the second-year signal caller after the game.

“He’s not going to have a great game every week, so that’s our job to give him a pat on the back like, ‘Man don’t worry about it. That’s behind us. We’re in the playoffs. Start fresh come this week,’” Willis McGahee said.

Yeah TT, yesterdays loss was ALL on you. Hope you learned from it and don’t repeat it!

  2. jwscout says:

It would nice to see what a different OC could with all out offensive talent!

  3. baylinorcrush says:

    No sh#t, sherlock!

  4. Louisianabroncofan says:

Ya start fresh and come out next week and kick the crap out of the steelers- PLEASE

  5. seweatherman1 says:

Somebody needs to let Tebow know that he needs to get the fire back he displayed last year during those last 3 games and this year right after he took over. With each passing game, he is looking more and more lost.

Now it is down to you lose, you are done for the season. There is no next week. Bottom line…let’s get that swagger back and win some games.

  6. OrangeTsunami says:

    Attn Tebow:

while it is your right to pray on the sidelines and have strong beliefs, I think that it might be over done at this point.. It is coming to the point that we the fans are beginning to question your football convictions, at the expense of your other beliefs… Bronco fans want football to be your primary focus, and it seems as if it’s not been so that last few weeks…

  7. baylinorcrush says:

The good thing with Tebow is everybody is great, problem is then you have to go play a football game in real life….

  8. Louisianabroncofan says:

Ya know I hate the steelers SSSOOO much and to think about what they’re gonna do to us next week is depressing as it gets. Plus we gotta wait until the very last dang game to be smashed so it’ll be a long, brutal wait that will mess up the enjoyment of the other games. Dammit.

  9. baylinorcrush says:

Get ready for the yellow towels too, plenty of Bronco fans will sell their ticket for this one is my guess.

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

Hey Tebow, what’s with all the “WE” crap, the only one I saw that had a bad game yesterday was you!!!

BTW….kudos to Harris and Goody, they outplayed Champ yesterday!

  11. baylinorcrush says:

It’s funny because I always use a marker to highlight the opposing team on my score predictions sheets and this week I chose yellow for the Steelers! I bet there is going to be a crapload of yellow on my entry sheet, LOL.

  12. OrangeTsunami says:

Considering our season is not over, and we got into the playoffs, here’s my positive spin:

The Steelers beat the Browns 13-9, hardly impressive.. Not sure how bad, or if they needed the win at all, but it’s not like they are on some big roll or something..

Funny how we went from WAY too many bombs, to none (unless I missed one).. Seems like an over correction to me.. All I hear is you guys talk about being “balanced”, which is becoming comical at this point… Lol!

Hopefully you are setting up Pittsburg with this game film… One can only hope..

  13. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, all the above material was already in the quotables blog, just saying, definitely learning nothing new here.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

I could start a new contest:

How long will it be until the Tebow disciples show up on the blog again?

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Ok, enough fun, gotta eat lunch.

  16. S.D.Bronco30 says:

Nice to see I got a point and up to a big 5, I am happy with that, especially with the WOS earlier…thanks for the props bay!!

Stomach turning, that’s what yesterdays game was, but it has been beat to death already by everyone so no need for further comment from me. Not touching on QB conversation or anything. It will be really tough to beat the Steelers, they know the playoffs well and step up in them.

    38-10 Steelers

  17. Louisianabroncofan says:

    U get my prediction bay?

  18. shaztah says:

Not long Bay I am still here and I still believe whether you do or not.

  19. since1972 says:

For myself I have seen enough of TT everybody keeps saying he needs more experience then how do you explain guys like Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler and others coming into the league and playing well from the start. The fact is TT is just another Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell a kid who had success in college but will never succeed in the NFL.. official score pick for the Pittsburgh game: Steelers 24 Broncos 3. And Bay is right it will look like a home game for Pitt in the stands.

  20. armadillo_orton says:

Fans are so blind it makes me sick… Tebow gets the heat for a poorly coached game… The fans jump off the bandwagon because they know absolutely squat about football… Like I have said a millon times, our lame offensive plan has been figured out… And again you need good WR’s.. What happened to KC when BOWE went down???? Well we lost B. Lloyd…….. Have any of you “experts” watched the 49′ers this season? Alex Smith by dinking and dunking has led the team to a great season….. Our receivers are NOT creating seperation.. So enough with the freakin deep routes….. I SAID ENOUGH!!!!! More Matt Willis short…. Do any of you bandwagon fans remember how Tebow would throw the ball in the air to LLoyd & Gaffney and trust they would either make a play or bat the ball away… With our current Alligator armed receivers, Tebow has no confidence in the WR’s ability to bat the ball away… They would even reach out and grab it… They just make a cradle and wait for the ball to hit them in the chest… Heck I wish we would go out and get freakin Terrell Owens.. At least he fights for the ball… So when you have a group of lame receivers what do you do????? Yo use the TE’s more. Some of the best catches this season have come from the TE’s… You pass short to JJ and Magahee.. you throw quick slants off a three step drop…. Has FOX/McCoy ever heard of the three step drop???? And the Broncos have stopped using the zone option like they did against Oakland & KC….. They are not rolling Tebow out… They are not throwing to the short middle….. Everyone in America knows we are A. going to run, B. run, and C. Play action deep…. They pass out of max protection formations, where there is not even a RB or TE to check down to… Now the fans who have never watched film will not understand this… They just look at stats and forget about play design and play calling….. FOX is getting a free pass on the madness and I for won am getting sick of it… He has done this BS for years .. Remember he has never never never never had back to back winning seasons……… He has taken the life out of this team with his lack of agressive play calling….. He has taken the life out of Tebow… He has told Tebow the goal of every series of possessions is to KICK the ball.. Either by punt, or field goal/point after… This has been the mantra…. So tebow is not forcing it… Tebow needs better play calling…… Dust off last years Houston game.. The short passing game, and screens… DOES ANYONE EVEN REMEMBER THAT GAME PLAN??? Make a phone call right now to C. Buckhaulter, and Terrel Owens… I will be holding football 101 classes for the rest of you amatuer fans.. And my Tebow bandwagon bus will be waiting for the rest of you doubters after his next good game… NUMBER 1 , why are we in the playoffs????? Cause of TEBOW…..

  21. shaztah says:

My husband and Dad have taught me that supporting a team means you suffer through the rough times and rejoice in the good times and I think the same should be if you support a player. I am not jumping off the bandwagon because of 2 really bad games besides I was not on a wagon to begin with I just believe that he will be successful as a QB. Everyone can have their opinion but if people jump off the wagon because of the failures they were not fans anyway. That would be like a so called fan of Denver who stopped being a fan because of the team last year. I think it is great that the players are supporting him if anyone knows how hard he is working and how well he will progress it is them.

  22. OrangeTsunami says:

Personally, I’m not saying Tebow can’t do it, or saying we have to scrap the whole Tebow for QB idea for certain, but it’s time the kid gets some tough love… He is no different than anyone else that puts in a string a bad (borderline pitiful) performances… No one is exempt to fan critism, not even Tim Tebow….

  23. since1972 says:

Okay let me get this straight if I criticize extremely poor player performance or suggest that we may need a better player at a certain position I’m now not a good and loyal fan. But if I rip the coaches and receivers I am not only a better fan I also then have superior knowledge than other fans. Well take off your rose colored glasses if you think the poor offensive performance of this team is everybody’s fault except TT

  24. TruBroncoFan says:

Amen Shaztah! I completely agree. I have been reading these message boards all season. It amazes me how so many people started off with Tebow praises and talking positively about his need to improve. Now all of a sudden, after a couple of bad games, these comments have this hint, well not so much hint, of venom behind them. Give the guy a break. As I recall, he is not the ONLY player on the field and the receivers have not been all that great lately. DT has been the biggest influence down the field. Coaching is also a part of any win or loss. To echo what a few people have said, the coaching seems to be trying to force Tebow out of is unconventional run game, which has been positive. Yes, he definitely needs to improve on the pass game, there’s no doubt in that. But, he’s a very young, very inexperienced quarterback and I am sure that with an off season to work on that with Elway, he will no doubt be ready to rock next season. And for those of you who named young quarterbacks that are ready right away, did any of them have the unconventional aggressive run game that Tebow did? He’s having to learn to change and adapt to the NFL game that obviously is very different from how he was able to be successful in FL. Besides, you can not fairly compare any one person’s strengths or successes to anothers. People are different and athletes are not an exception to that. If you all want to jump off the Tebow train, go ahead, but I for one would rather he be our QB than Orton or anyone else. There is something special in him and he has the best attitude towards himself self and improving his game. He is going to be great one day, whether he’s given the chance to stay in Denver or he goes elsewhere. Hopefully he stays in Denver. I am glad to see his teammates are still standing by him and encouraging him, even if some fans aren’t. But then again, that’s why they call it a band wagon…

  25. strandoftds says:

Well the Steelers are hurting bad, this will be a strang game I think.

  26. strandoftds says:

    new blog.

  27. Go_Broncos_6 says:

Let’s give the kid a break. Obviously he’s going through a rough patch in his season, but Tebow is the kind of guy that can pull himself out of it and get back to winning games. You’ve gotta give him some slack because he’s still young and still adjusting. And keep in mind, this is really only Tebow’s first year of playing real NFL football, so the fact he that he lead us this far is pretty remarkable. Screw the last three games, before all you charming bandwagon fans jump off the Tebow train, don’t forget that six game winning streak that made us play-off contenders and never would have happened if it weren’t for a certain young quarterback wearing the number 15.

  28. broncofan9137 says:

He says that he needs to improve after every game. I thought that he did improve after he had a good game of passing from the pocket, but he has gone down hill ever since that game. I don’t know if it is Tebows fault or the receivers are not making any effort to get open. Some times they were open & other times no effort to get open. Besides all that the Fox offense is out dated. His offense might have worked back in 60′s but not today. So I fill Fox has to go & get someone young that has some kind of imagination. Also we still need help on the defensive line. I was one of Tebows bigest fans but I fill he should have improved more than he has. Maybe they will give Adam Weber a chance next year. Elway don’t stop looking for a QB. Plus I don’t think the Broncos deserve to be in the playoffs.

  29. dbrew6 says:

So many Bronco fans are starting to sound like Cowboy fans. They win, the Cowboy jerseys and hats come out of the closet. They lose, the hats and jerseys go back in. You’re either for them, or against them, period. If anyone remembers at the start of the season, we were suppose to finish last in the division. Last I checked, we’re AFC West Champs with a current record of 0-0 heading into the playoffs. And I totally disagree with OrangeTsunami about Tim concentrating on football and stop praying on the sideline. Tim has earned more respect from players and fans, even Raider fans this year losing more games than Ben Roethlisberger by praying than by big Ben’s rape charges. Tim always keeps first and foremost, ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all the rest will be given unto thee.’ Tim knows where his devotion is, it’s with God first and football second. Even if he never wins a super bowl, he’s already a winner in my book. But somehow I can’t help but believe that God has great things in strore for him with football also.

OK Guys, we lost the final three ganes of the season. At the begining of October no one, I mean no one, gave a penny for a Broncos playoffs hope. But you know what? With Tebow as QB and as a leader of the team and with all the organization behind we won 6 consecutive games and at the end of the season and no matrer how uggle it could be we finally won the division and get to the Playoffs for the first time in six years. Ok, we lost to the Chiefs but anyway it was a season long effort and we will play at home against the Steelers. Let’s regorup as a tema and as Fans please. The Broncos need all our suppert and they deserve it, Come On! Go Broncos!!

We are running McDaniel off that is y McCoy is off coach

  33. FLBroncoGator says:

armadillo, thanks for the smartest post I’ve seen yet. BroncoGus, I said Tebow would take us to the playoffs if not the Superbowl this year from day one. I also said, from day one, that John Fox was our biggest obstacle to overcome and he still is. Broncos504, you are 150% correct. McD would be 1000% better than either McCoy or Fox. He just shouldn’t have had free reign over the draft with zero experience. That was the front office’s mistake. Nobody else. And again…if Willis wouldn’t have DROPPED Tebow’s perfect bomb, and Fox wouldn’t have chosen to NOT put points on the board in the first half, we stood every chance to win the game.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

The defender put a hand between Willis hands from behind and pushed the ball out, lame try Tebow disciple, LOL..

  35. FLBroncoGator says:

Bay, it hit him dead in the numbers and he had BOTH hands on it. Make up some more excuses. You pull it into your chest and fight for it.

  36. 1ArabianKnight says:

If there ever was a Miracle Season for the Broncos, this certainly would be it! I don’t know and can’t say God favors any team over the other, but I can say He favors those Who Believe in Him. Whether you are a person of Religious affiliation doesn’t matter. However, if you are a Fan of the Underdog and those Who go Against All Odds, now is the time to experience Hope and Belief, and maybe, just maybe…come to realize what Faith is. Mind you, Faith and Religion are not associated, and I say that for those who may not know the difference. With that being said, I Have Faith this Team will Find Themselves..and Believe they are Resilient enough to Go All The Way! I believe He is continuing to make examples in many ways. After all, His Ways…ARE NOT our ways! I believe the Broncos will FIND A WAY during these Playoffs!

  37. CZSharon says:

With a 7 win 4 loss record so many of you want to get another quarter back. Blows my mind. I wonder how you would respond after coming in and winning games and playing passionately with zest and having the management and coaches not only Not giving praises, but saying they aren’t really behind you and still want another quarterback. You play your heart out and come up with wins and you are played down by the management and coaches. You are not shown support; at least not publicly. In the beginning it was obvious that you were put in as QB to fall flat on your face and prove the management and coaches correct in their assessment. Low and behold, you keep coming in with fire and proving them wrong. Would you keep your passion and will and fire lit when you are getting nothing to feed your fire and passion. You are hearing no or few kind words of support from your coaches and management. The brain is the most important organ in the body to create and achieve wins If you have the physical ability. To believe in someone and Know that they Will Succeed no matter what, puts and keeps the fire & passion in their brain to make the win so. And their fire, passion and positivity lights everyone around them. I know that you have seen this. Just think how you feel when you are being encouraged……… Now think how you feel when you are being discouraged.

  38. nativeelwayfan says:

Some good points on here. We all wish the team was doing better.

Bottom line is that the offense is anemic and Tebow looks scared and confused (yes, he had a good streak going but look who those games were against. Should have won those games handily rather than relying on Prater). I am also fully aware that there is a whole team of guys who should have played better yesterday (except for Mcgahee and most of the D). I just cannot get past the fact that, as the supposed leader of the team, Tebow does not have the requisite skill set to be a championship caliber quarterback in the NFL. Heck, he’s been in the NFL for 2 years and he still looks like a 10 year old girl when he throws the ball. As amazing as Elway was, I’m not convinced that a summer of tutelage will miraculously help Tebow become a pro-caliber quarterback.

Now that we know Denver will have the 21st pick in the draft, it makes sense for Denver to take a quarterback. Given the insane depth at this position, it is totally within reason to expect for a quality qb to be available (such as Keenum, Moore, or even Weeden). Using a player with proven PASSING ability and keeping Tebow as a change-of-pace makes way more sense than relying on the Option for next year.

    Just thoughts. Go Broncos!

  39. baylinorcrush says:

I like the way you think newbie.

  40. CZSharon says:

I agree with dbrew6; Tim Tebow IS a winner in just about every area I have ever seen. Not only a winner in Life but in football too. God has great plans for him…. I believe also that he will be a great football player. Give him your trust and support, and I have not doubt that Tim Tebow will not let you down. And I am an FSU grad.

  41. nativeelwayfan says:

CZShsaron, I agree that Tebow is a great guy and may even be a “winner” (unless you look at the last three games, which may prove otherwise), but I have a hard time agreeing that God would have any greater “plans for him” than any other qb in the league. And, he still can’t throw the ball worth crap.

  42. CZSharon says:

nativeelwayfan, In order to have completed passes, you have to have receivers catching them. Do you know of any winners who have not lost any games? Don’t you think that in the losing, you are learning skills to help you stay a winner?

  43. CZSharon says:

And nativeelwayfan, a person has to be open to receiving info on God’s plans for them. Sometimes they are smacked in the face before they know. Positive thinking in life will get you so much further than negative thinking. People who think negatively are losers. Well for heaven’s sake; they are thinking they lost before they start. Annnnnd guess what they get? Yes, the brain is powerful; think positively and you give yourself a great chance to win. Fall down, but pick right up and go again for the win. People who want to fly off the existing team’s cheerleading wagon. (yes, I was a cheerleader) force the team to do it all with out them. Yes, that can be done; but so much more difficult. Why be a fair weather fan? And that means to each and every player on the team. Why not think positive and put Real support behind the team? Just possibly you Might contribute to their win.

  44. CZSharon says:

And again nativeelwayfan, please read my comment above yours saying the offense and Tebow are anemic, etc. And read through your same comment and tell me that you are supporting and thinking positively. Saying Tim Tebow doesn’t have the requisite skills to be a championship caliber NFL quarterback is in no way supportive to the Denver Broncos. I beg to differ; Tim Tebow Does have those skills. And do you think that is a positive statement on your part? How well do you do when you are hearing you will Not be this and you Can’t do that???? How well do you do when you hear encouraging words about yourself and what you can do? No other person is different, in that regard, as you or me or anyone else. Give me encouragement and I will do my best to make you proud; bet you are the same.

  45. jsbear says:

Maybe if the coaching staff gave him more credit, including Mr. Elway, he could concentrate and play better. Everything was fine when he was winning, but now they want to throw him under the bus. Get a clue Mr. Fox you can’t go on TV and put a player down, and expect him not to be negatively effected by it.

  46. jarbronco says:

I still believe in Tebow being a great qb of the future. The chances for this team to make the playoffs was ridiculously low to start with. The team was stripped of all it’s best talent. I think it’s a failure of the wr’s as much as a failure of the qb at this point. Lets hope for a good showing against a much more talented team in Pitt. then really put all efforts into upgrading the team overall talent. Imagine throwing a great INSIDE pass rusher to a healthy Von and Doom show next year. The defense has been playing a level or 2 above their talent, it’s been great to see. I don’t think we have much of a chance to go far in the playoffs, but like I said, NOBODY expected us to be in the playoffs at all. Go Broncos!

  47. tlcat06 says:

I read all these, and have for the majority of the season and then thought… ReAlly? WOW! What a bunch of haters! I was at the game yesterday… He was not allowed to throw the ball once on 1st down. NOT ONCE! He was not allowed to throw a screen pass. HASN’T for the past three games! When it was a throwing down I knew it because of the formation. I am not a defensive coordinator, but come on!!! The play calling was ridiculous and did not SHOW trust or belief in any ability at all. If he would’ve kept the ball just one of the times McGahee ran it he would’ve ran in for a td. He needs to get better, but if they play that conservatively, he is NEVER going to get better. I’d almost rather he go somewhere that will actually try to believe in him than stay here! Stupid fans who like him when he wins and hate him when he loses, you piss me off. Be happy that we are even in the playoffs after starting 1-4. Greedy people!

believe and win or lose be proud of this ridiculous season! GEEZ!

  48. Champ_Fan says:

armadillo_orton I could not agree more, I am not huge bronco fan but it is even painful for me to watch what John Fox and his way to conservative play calling, his run for the first two downs until thier faced with 3rd and 10+ then wants his cold, young quarterback to throw to these young cold recievers. I by no means think that Tebow is the best quarterback out there but you do have to give him credit for having to learn how to be an NFL quarterback on the fly, also everyone including the media, especially the media need to quit concerning themselves so much with his beleifs, I’m sure there are players out there that have crazy supersticous rituals that they do but get no media coverage. If the Broncos want to have any type of chance in the playoffs they need to let Tebow throw, start the game off with a deep throw, whether its completed of not it will have the defense second guessing thier stratagy or start off with a bunch of quick slants to warm up the throwing game, some type of actual balanced offense, not just run for the majority of the game then expect a young quarterback to come from benind with no rythm in the passing game and win (then blame everything on Tebow like its his fault). in conclussion armadillo_orton I could not agree with you more and its refreshing to hear someone that realizes that the biggest mistakes in Denver are the plays that are being called.

  49. baylinorcrush says:

    Ridiculous season?
