Taking His Talents to Television

June 24th, 2011 - 5:11pm by Gray Caldwell

A Bronco is headed back to London.

Nick Ferguson, who played in Denver from 2003-07, has been chosen to serve as a studio analyst for Sky Sports — based in London — for a Sunday slate of NFL games.

He and former NFL linebacker Rocky Boiman earned the position with their performance at the league’s annual Broadcast Boot Camp in New Jersey.

“This an extraordinary opportunity for me to continue my broadcasting education, especially on Sky Sports in Europe where I won a World Bowl,” said Ferguson, who spent the 1998 season with the Rhein Fire in NFL Europa.

The broadcast boot camp, which ran from June 20-23, included tape study, editing, show preparation, radio production, control room operation, studio preparation, production meetings, field reporting and game preparations.

The players taped segements as studio and game analysts and took part in a networking session with television executives.

Since it began in 2007, the camp has helped 36 players earn broadcasting jobs down the road. Ferguson and Boiman are the first to earn broadcasting jobs directly as a result of their performance at the camp.

FOX Sports’ Curt Menefee said in a release that it’s a great opportunity for the two former players to “get right into the field.”

It’s unclear the exact date Ferguson will take on his assignment with Sky Sports, but it will be determined closer to the kickoff of the 2011 season.

Ferguson joins a handful of other former Broncos who have taken on broadcasting careers, including Tom Jackson and Mark Schlereth with ESPN and Shannon Sharpe with CBS.

Back to the subject of this blog:

Safety Nick Ferguson was originally signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 1996. He played college football at Georgia Tech.

He has also been a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Rhein Fire, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos in his career.

    That’s a mouthful!

Happy to see he might finally find some job where he is truly appreciated. Always thought we might have something special in him, but even so he was given a shot for 5 years (2003-2007) it just never truly materialized even so his numbers were respectable. Total tackles in those five years, 76, 34, 79, 36 and 55, and a total of one sack, 6 INTs, 4 forced fumbles and 2 recovered in those 5 years.

Hamza Abdullah ended up replacing him and then Abdullha was let go when we signed Vernon Fox, looking back we were way better off with Ferguson all along, LOL.

Sal Paolantonio went on the radio and said he thinks the Eagles want players, not draft picks, in return for Kevin Kolb. This lends credence to the idea that they could get someone like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from the Cardinals in a Kolb deal — something that’s been speculated since the Cardinals (who needed a quarterback, not a cornerback) selected Patrick Peterson in the draft.

This post serves two purposes, one to remind folks that Orton to the Cardinals is only their plan B, and two it gives the long list of PP fans here something nostalgic to look back on, LOL.

Whenever it starts, free agency this year is going to be the most exciting one ever, that gets me pumped up as much as the season itself, no joke.

I mean we are going to find out what we have been wondering for 6 months: Orton traded or not and to what team and for what, how many DTs do we bring in and which ones, will DeAngelo re-unite with Fox, what else will we bring in to get that running game going that Fox is so fond of, more RBs, or just FBs, or both? etc, etc….

Invaluable info about our team and where it’s heading will be revealed all within that first week or two of FA!!!!!

    ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!

Don’t blink at anytime in that time frame or you’ll miss something BIG, guaranteed!

  16. 3rdGeneration says:

Bay, I agree. Once a deal gets done there’s going to be a firestorm of trades and free agent pick ups. It’ll be more difficult to follow then BFE and Strands conversation above. No time in history has the the NFL had so much time to think about everything they want to do for so long. I’m equally excited for it. Here’s to hoping the ball gets rolling soon. By the way, it’d be cool if this blog allowed you to attach pictures to messages.

  17. Bro says:

Im with bay on this one, once a deal gets done i will not leave the television and the computer! Lets do good work John’s!

  18. strandoftds says:

Yes, A deal gets done and I`m glued to my TV as well. I`m ready for this firestorm and have been since the first week of march. Lets get this thing going already.

  19. strandoftds says:

BFE, I`ll see ya tonight. LOL! Just kidding yall.

  20. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I agree bay. I think it will be either very exciting or dull depending on how much time we have for free agency. If its not time enough …. no one will wanna rush into any deals or trades i would think. I mean they have had time to think it over in many scenarios but with such a small window they might not wanna make rash decisions. Altho I am of the same mindset as you that it will be very exciting….instead of months of free agency acquisitions we will be bombarded with news of acquisitions back to back to back in a short period of time. Lotta questions will be answered. yes orton, no orton. yes deangelo, no deangelo. yes meban

  21. imready says:

As of right now, the only one who’s got a job is Nick Ferguson. LOL I don’t think I’m going to get all worked up yet about free agency. The one curiosity I can afford during the situation it will John Elway and John Fox being affiliated with the Denver Broncos have any effect on the Broncos ability to sigh free agents. The the shenanigans that went on the last two years certainly didn’t encourage players to sign here. With a champion like John Elway at the helm I’d like to think that players would love to come to Denver and play for one of the greatest players of all time. If that’s the case, we get better, faster.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, since they want to force every team to spend the majority of their cap moneys in a new cba, I believe there will be a lot of players acquistions mainly by lowly teams like us, plus add the fact that whoever is brought in won’t be at anymore of a disadvantage as far as being team ready than anyone else currently on a team like ours who has nearly an all new management and coaching saff and I see us having a lot of acquisitions.

But probably not many trades since we don’t have that many worthy players to spare except Orton, plus since I believe that a team should be rebuilt through the draft, just like the Triumvirate does, they will be hard pressed to trade draft picks for players.

But if I look at it for the special off season this is, there is no better opportunity than this year than to rebuild some through FA because the fact is that if the new cba is agreed upon along the guidelines it has now there will be a tremendous pool of players added to the mix with 4 and 5 year players becoming unrestricted FA and therefore available just for money without any draft picks needed.

And a) you must spend your cap money, b) you won’t have to pay your rookies as much with a rookie wage scale and c) if we trade Orton we free up 9 mil cap money for this year and the end result is we have a plethora of money we NEED to spend, hence it all equals to mucho FAs coming our way!

Anyhow that’s how I see it in my crystal ball, and not only that, but in my business mind of mine, haha, hope I’m right.

Bottom line is even so there are guidelines to success in life there are always exceptions to the rules and this to me looks like THE year to better ourselves through FA if there ever was one.

I’d like to personally apologize for going too far and talking about my wife’s family Friday Night,I didn’t realize it until the next morning,I shouldn’t drink and post at the same time.Strand and I have a good time talking about Football and Rock-n-Roll sometimes on Friday Night, but I got a little too personal, and I’m sorry for using the Denver Broncos blog for the wrong reasons.

    BFE

  24. baylinorcrush says:

Good thing I came up with some material of my own for the blog today since the DP has but one stupid AP article about what a Buffalo safety thinks of the lockout and that article re-hashes everything about the cba proposal that’s already been said here by us almost a week ago I think.

Watch some DP writer getting ahold of some of my thoughts above and expand on that train of thought in one of their articles next week, the only unknown is which writer.

Like Little says, there are only three kinds of people; the ones who make it happen, the ones who watch it happen and the ones who wonder what happened. The DP writers are the only ones who fall outside of either category since they watch what happens to make it happen, LMAO…
At least they are one step ahead of wondering what happened, haha.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

Hopefully your wife won’t get ahold of that discussion, LOL.

  26. BeastFromEast92 says:

    LOL.

  27. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah I need to quit posting on Friday nights, posting and drinking don’t mix.I like shooting the breeze with strand, but I sometimes drink too much and post things I shouldn’t and I apologize to Broncos Country, and it won’t happen again, this is a football blog, not a chat room.
I will still post, just not while drinking too much.

  28. BeastFromEast92 says:

Now about FA………..How long til we get rid of Orton???LOL.

  29. BeastFromEast92 says:

If we can aquire a couple of DTs,a FB, and an experienced backup QB in FA,that would be wonderful.I hope Orton and Quinn are both gone, like you said it will free up money and Roster spots.

  30. BeastFromEast92 says:

Alright time to take the dogs out,in the pouring rain…GEESH!!!

  31. strandoftds says:

Bay, I enjoyed your 6:41 A.M. post this morning. Heck, it`s better than the DP. I guess thats because your a die hard Denver Broncos fan and the good stuff just over flows. What you just posted got me pumped is all. Come on FA!!

  32. strandoftds says:

BFE, I hope Orton is gone within a week of FA.

  33. strandoftds says:

And how about the possibility of signing RB DeAngelo Williams, I`d be for it.

  34. strandoftds says:

BFE, if I drank as much as you for just one night I`d be in a coma. lol.

  35. strandoftds says:

There saying that by mid July that a deal could be agreed upon and signe Nows thats encouraging.

  36. strandoftds says:

Of course we all know that but hopefully it`s not going to be any later than july 15. We`ve waited long enough.

  37. strandoftds says:

Question: So doe`s this mean that if all of the rules they have set in place for the new CBA come into affect, that there will be no so thing as restricted FA anymore? In other words no more losing draft picks for a paticular player? If so, I`m for it.

  38. strandoftds says:

ooops, no such thing as FA anymore?

  39. baylinorcrush says:

Players with 4 years or more would be unrestricted FA, players with less than 4 years would be restricted FA. You’re just dreaming is all, LOL, nothing wrong with dreaming though…

  40. baylinorcrush says:

Strand, this is the previous cba rules:

Restricted free agents (RFAs) are players who have three or more accrued seasons of service and whose contracts have expired.

Unrestricted free agents are players who have completed six or more accrued seasons of service and whose contracts have expired.

In other words, the new cba could have players qualify as RFAs with maybe as little as two years of service and UFAs only having to complete four years of service. But maybe they’ll keep the RFAs at three years service minimum, nobody knows right now that I know of, we’ll have to see.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

Since I haven’t heard anything about RFAs they might just keep it at three years though.

  42. BeastFromEast92 says:

If they pass that rule players will be jumping ship like never before, but since we use FA a lot, might not be too bad for us,unless we start losing players too.
In other words teams that have less talent and use FA to fill a lot of needs will benefit, but teams that have a lot of talented high dollar players will have a hard time holding onto their players.6 years 4 years, not that much difference tho I guess.

  43. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah strand,I would love to see DeAngelo Williams in the Orange and Blue!
Moreno,Williams, and White would be an awesome backfield!

  44. strandoftds says:

    LMAO!

  45. strandoftds says:

Bay, sounds good to me. For whatever reason I thought that the league would do away with restricted as a whole. I don`t mind restricted FA, but it`s a bummer when your team has to give up a draft pick for a player. A double edged sword, so to speak, so it works both ways. I can live with it.

  46. strandoftds says:

The two noteable names we will lose is Thomas and Harris if the CBA falls into place as planned. I know that there are more Bronco`s that will be restricted FA`s but they are the two guys that are gamers that I like.

  47. strandoftds says:

BFE, cool set of RB`s if we do snag him.

  48. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea that makes sense bay. I really hope we are agressive in FA. This team needs help fast. And good help. Not over the heal help. And a 4 year unrestricted free agent is usually just like 26 so for once i would be all for FA if we can get relatively young talent. We could get set up very fast. For example if we land both Deangelo Williams and Mebane and trade Orton for a pick or something. That alone would make my FA for 2011. TRB out…

  49. baylinorcrush says:

I was thinking about what imready said above on Saturday pm:

“The one curiosity I can afford during the situation it will John Elway and John Fox being affiliated with the Denver Broncos have any effect on the Broncos ability to sigh free agents. With a champion like John Elway at the helm I’d like to think that players would love to come to Denver and play for one of the greatest players of all time.”

Not that it was a question, but I’ll take a stab at that, haha. I personally don’t see how having Elway as a VP, a position which he has never held in the NFL, or any other for that matter other than QB, can have any draw power for players to want to come play here (the Fox Factor is a little different and I’ll expand on that below).

But let’s face it, overall the only thing that will bring players here is the money.

We will have to pay UFAs good money to attract them here because we are a bottom of the barrel team, no escaping that. Players who are ususally willing to take less to play somewhere is because they feel they would have a chance at a championship, and we are no way anywhere giving that impression to anyone in the NFL right now. That is the fact we must live with going into this FA, be ready to open your pocket book if you want to lend anybody.

However in our case there may be one exception, and it’s not because of Elway, it’s because of Fox. Some of Fox’s old players may be willing to take less money to play here simply because they like the man, he is a “good guy” as reported by every player I’ve heard from and for the sake of reuniting I can see them taking a little less money to get that good report with their old coach once again, so I’ll cross my fingers on DeAngelo, and we’ll probably land a couple other Panthers also.

The Fox Factor, that’s a new one and I kind of like it, hopefully it will come to fruition and I can use it here for years to come.
