Success on Short Calendar

September 2nd, 2009 - 3:46pm by Chris Gentilviso

With only three days wedged between the Bears and Cardinals preseason contests, Head Coach Josh McDaniels knew this week represented a test for how well his team could grasp its normal workload.

At the conclusion of Wednesday’s walkthrough, McDaniels rated that test as a success.

“We crammed everything we could cram into two days,” McDaniels said. “You kind of see what your guys are capable of learning real fast because there are some new little things that we have to do based on what they do. Our guys adapted well to it in the last two days.”

Those adaptations included naming items to improve on in Thursday night’s contest. McDaniels cited no penalties and no turnovers as goals for his offense, while shoring up the two-minute drill performance as an expectation for his defense.

“There are a lot of little things like that that we are looking forward to trying to improve upon and get better at,” McDaniels said. “We will see which ones come up tomorrow night.”

Separate sides of the ball aside, the goal for the entire roster is to pick up its first win of the exhibition season. While every team has a different approach to its final preseason game, McDaniels’ approach does not involve abandoning his starters.

“Our guys are going to play,” he said. “(The starters) are not going to play into the second half or anything like that, but there are some things that we want to do better than what we have done.”

Eleven-year veteran Brandon Stokley said he hadn’t been told otherwise, and feels that minutes are no issue – as long as the team is continuing its track toward being ready for the Sept. 13 opener at Cincinnati.

“Gonna expect to play the whole game and then we’ll see,” Stokley said. “I haven’t been told anything yet so go in with the mindset of playing the whole game and then go from there.

That mindset may especially apply to Tom Brandstater. When asked how long the rookie would play, McDaniels replied: “He will play a long time.”

I have never been to a Bronco game.

    It’s on my bucket list

  2. Dynamicdave says:

rkymtnhigh, always a good idea to bring some high powered binoculars. helps if your in the south stands or high up. Such a blast to be at the game.

  3. rkymtnhigh says:

If you guys wanna see a great up and comming cornerback, check out Kyle Wilson from Boise State tonight on ESPN.(Durring commercials of course.) He will probably go in the firts round next year.

  4. whitebronco#1 says:

Me neither… a must do before I’m gone.

  5. rkymtnhigh says:

ok mabey not first round. I am a little biased.

I’ve been to 2 Broncos’ game, and despite their terrific Mile High record, they lost both. The first was against Pittsburgh in mid-80′s, the second was a Xmas gift from my mom. I had to come home early to make the game (I live in Dallas now), so she had to tell me about it. It was the first Jacksonville-Denver playoff game. To add insult to injury, I lost my wallet at the game, including all my money, credit cards and ID!

After that game, I decided I was bad luck, and haven’t even attempted to see them in person again. :(

  7. dlmyers says:

Hey all you haters, seems like you all think that Coach McDaniels traded Cutler! hum

Just reported by Vic Lombardi, Brandon put out an olive branch to Rod Smith and they are working together this week.

My hope for tonights game is Tommy B. shows promise, defense continues their very good developement, and nobody gets hurt.

  8. Dynamicdave says:

I’ve been to a few games at Invesco since I’ve lived in Vegas. Since my mom passed, though, and I take care of my elderly father, it’s just not possible. I can go to the Broncos bar, though, that way I’m only gone for about 4 hours. I just make sure my dads meal is ready for him. I would bring him to the bar/game but he is not into all the noise and “rah rah” atmosphere (plus he doesn’t drink). When I get to be his age (God willing), I will still be gung-ho Broncos and living the moment. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. charlton county bronco says:

excited about the game tonight…i live in ga so i watch the games on either channelsurfing.net or tvpc.com…looking foward to seeing some more of brandstater tonight…

  10. rkymtnhigh says:

I hear i’ts next to impossible to get tickets though. Mile high has been sold out for every game for how many years now?

  11. Dynamicdave says:

Hey Dan, missed you at the Chicago/Denver game. I went down to the bar and watched it. Not going for tonights game. When should I expect you to pop in down there? Let me know.

  12. charlton county bronco says:

i’ve only been to 1 broncos game and that was in jacksonville, but i did have press pass/sideline pass which was cool…got to catch up with champ…gotta’ find a way to make it to a home game

  13. Dynamicdave says:

No, you can still get tickets, just need to know where to look.

kgallant46, man, that IS bad luck. I lost my wallet and ID about 3 years ago. Not fun. Had about $600 in the wallet. SS card, license. I had to change everything. Even my bank accounts to be safe.

  14. broncos9/9 says:

charlton county bronco : how can i watch the game from NY?

  15. rkymtnhigh says:

Dynamicdave, I used to live in Vegas. It was a long time ago though.

Where is this bronco bar? Sounds like an awesome place.

  16. brian_schneider says:

I have only been to 2 games. 1 when I was about 8 yrs. old when Elway was playing and then this last game against the Bears. I’ll admit it, my wife and I were one of the many “Boo Birds”

  17. charlton county bronco says:

9/9: check out channelsurfing.net…they put up links there, and also when the regular season starts, go to tvpc.com and click live tv, pick a channel, but watch the comment boards…someone will put up a link every few minutes that when you copy and paste it to your address bar it will stream the game to your windows media player, but be quick, those links expire after about a minute

  18. rkymtnhigh says:

    charlton county bronco,

Being on the sidelines of a home Bronco Game is gotta be like you have died and gone to heaven.

  19. 07elway says:

I’ve been to quite a few games. Was able to go to more when I still lived in CO, we went to alot of games at Mile High. Miss that stadium! And I’ve been to one game since Invesco was built. Got the royal treatment at that game… whew!!! haha It’s alot of fun being at the games, you can feel the energy. Crazy but fun. And at least the Bronco fans are civilized… Chiefs fans seriously need therapy. Chew out their own team no matter what, can’t really blame them though… they’re almost as bad as the Raiders. lol

  20. tnalen66 says:

I have been to 2 games at the old mile high both wins (pittsburg and cinciny) and i have been to 4 games in the metro dome agaist the vikes.2w 2 ls. I live in ND so a drive to MN is not that long. I would love to go to a game in the new stadium.

  21. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

Yes, where is this Broncos bar, I’m going to be in Vegas this coming May.

Stoked for the game tonight, thinking about bailing out of class early to BBQ for the game. My guess is Knowshon won’t take the field tonight, any news on his status for this game?

  22. Dynamicdave says:

    broncos9/9, http://www.tvunetworks.com/

rkymtnhigh, Four Mile Bar on Boulder Hwy. Small but fun. Don’t have to wait an hour to get a drink. Pitchers are $4.75 during Bronco games and a free shot of schnapps for every broncos TD. Free pizza and wings during halftime. I’ve been going there 8 years plus. I am going to talk to the fans about bringing pot luck, like we used to (our answer to tailgate party’s). People kind of fell out of it last year. I’m going to try to get everyone to do it during the Denver/Traiters game. We may not be at Invesco, but we bring a little bit of home with us to Vegas.

  23. Dynamicdave says:

McD said Moreno is game ready if needed but that they really don’t want to use him. They want him to rest up for the following Sunday game.

  24. charlton county bronco says:

they need to be careful with knowshon tonight…a lot of the links on that channelsurfing.net go to the tvunetworks so both are reliable…

  25. Dynamicdave says:

As I mentioned, McD said he probably won’t play him tonight. he doesn’t want him to aggravate anything. Then he has 10 days more to rest the sprain. He will be full strength on opening day.

  26. broncos9/9 says:

charlton county bronco: thanks guys really wanna see this game tonight wish I still lived in denver

  27. Dynamicdave says:

mad_orange_devil_27, shoot me an email at dynamicdave8 at the Y and when you come into town, just let me know. I’ll meet up with you there. May is a looong ways off, though.

  28. rkymtnhigh says:

Should be a great matchup tonight with fitzgerald and champ.

If fitzgerald does catch it. his head better be on a swivel cause you know whats comming.

  29. brian_schneider says:

what channel do you look for in the tvunetworks.com site to get the Broncos game?

  30. 07elway says:

Grrr, my comment is “awaiting moderation”. Here we go… again.

  31. 07elway says:

In case it never posts… this is what I said earlier.

32. tav true bronco says:

I live n hamilton,OH imma be at the cincy game week 1

  33. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

Dynamicdave – will do. I need the time, saving up $$$.

  34. Dynamicdave says:

tav true bronco, lucky dog. Scream loud enough so we can hear you from Las Vegas, ha, ha.

07elway, don’t you just hate when that happens. If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a hundred times, “Stop using foul language and this wouldn’t happen!” Ha, ha, (jk)

MOD27, good enough. Save the money but don’t throw it all away on the machines. Buy souvenirs, etc.. Also, always tip your bartenders and waitresses, ha, ha.

  35. 07elway says:

That was funny Dave. Cause you know me… me and foul mouth. Yeah watch out, I’m trouble! haha

  36. broncs55 says:

DD – what if the bartenders and waitresses aren’t hot enough? Some of them I wouldnt let eat out of the dog’s bowl lol

  37. giggle stick says:

there is a lotta talent on B.S.U. watch kellen moore QB too

  38. eeerockski says:

My wife and I have been to 2 Denver games. Both vs. SD as we live in southern california. Unfortunately we lost both but they were both very close. I got to see Portis in his prime, baby! Him vs. LT was a great matchup I’ll never forget.

  39. cutlersucks8 says:

Broncos want Harris, LB from Jets for Marshall interesting

  40. broncs55 says:

eeerockski: remember, it takes a good line to make a good running back. The line the Broncos have had and San Diego has had has improved the running game. My grandmother, when she was alive could run through the holes these lines are able to make!

  41. Broncfalls says:

Speaking of dog bowls…..anyone seen Oaklands cheerleaders? YIKES!

I think I’d rather see Al Davis in bloomers :)

NOW THE CHEERLEADERS IN DENVER…..UH YEAH…..YOU KNOW WHEN GOD CREATED THEM HE WAS SIMPLY SHOWING OFF! lol :)

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  42. eeerockski says:

b55: For sure. But you can’t tell me both of them in their prime weren’t phenominal. I also saw McCaffrey stretch out for a huge bomb and make the catch. Aww the memories.

  43. broncs55 says:

sure they were fun to watch, but I’m more of a Davis fan myself. Heck, I’d even go as far to say I liked Emmit Smith play in Dallas as well, even though I hate the cowboys. Their cheerleaders are more fun to watch though!

  44. florio's_mom says:

I have a feeling that Brandstater is gunna do great tonight!

  45. broncs55 says:

Yeah, I have that feeling too, but whether he does good or not I will not care. I want to see some progress from last week. A win is always nice, even if in the preseason, but correcting problems is far more important right now before the regular season hits, not the overall scoreboard.

If the Lions would have concentrated on fixing their problems last year instead of winning a preseason game, they would have done better.

It’s simple really, good teams focus on fixing problems, if they win they win and if they lose – who cares? Bad teams win try to give their players hope by winning some preseason games.

  46. The_Ink says:

Last and most definitely least….Bob Slowik’s autograph. lol

  48. kgallant46 says:
