Still the Starter

December 13th, 2010 - 4:50pm by Eric Detweiler

On Monday, Interim Head Coach Eric Studesville said Kyle Orton will start Sunday in Oakland.

Studesville went on to say that he and the coaching staff would continue to examine a variety of factors to decide which mix of players across the roster will give his team the best chance to beat the Raiders.

“We’re going to look at everything today,” Studesville said. “We have two days to gameplan and look and talk as an organization about what we want to do. If that’s the direction that we decide to go and we feel is best for us, then we’ll make that decision. Right now, we still have to look at everything and get ready and go from there.”

Orton finished Sunday’s 44-13 loss in Arizona 19-of-41 passing for 166 yards with three interceptions. The quarterback, who threw 20 passing touchdowns in the team’s first 11 games, was held without a passing score for the second straight week.

After the loss, Orton took responsibility for the offense’s sluggish performance in recent weeks and vowed to improve in the Broncos’ final three games. But on Monday, Studesville defended the sixth-year veteran by pointing out the various factors that influence the passing attack, such as pass protection and route running.

“It’s 100 percent a team effort — to just put it solely on him I don’t think is 100 percent right,” Studesville said. “But again, we’re all going to take responsibility for what is happening. The last few weeks, we haven’t done those things.”

Studesville said 2010 first-round pick Tim Tebow is “in the equation” and would be prepared to start if the staff deems that he would give the team the best chance to win.

The interim head coach pointed to Tebow’s contributions on the field this season with four total touchdowns and his status as the backup quarterback for 11 of the team’s 12 games this season as indications of the rookie’s value to the team.

Tebow warmed up in the third quarter when Orton suffered a rib injury  but did not see game action. On Monday, the backup quarterback, who estimated he gets ”a handful” of practice reps with the first-team offense each week, said he will keep trying to get better on the practice field to make sure he’s ready if called upon on game day.

The former Heisman Trophy winner acknowledged that he’s heard fans chanting his name during games but remains focused on doing what he can to help the team.

“I think you just try to handle it as best as possible,” Tebow said of his popularity amongst fans. “I really appreciate the support and that people are behind me. That means a lot, so I just do whatever I’m asked to do.”

A day after making his NFL head coaching debut, Studesville said he owes it to the organization and “the integrity of the game” to put the best product on the field — whether it comes to making a change at quarterback or another position.

“We’re going to make the decision that’s best for us overall as an organization and as a team,” Studesville said. “I’m going to certainly look to the input from everyone from (Broncos President and Chief Executive Officer) Mr. (Pat) Bowlen on down to the coaches and all of us that have been around to make that evaluation, if that’s what we need to do.”

MCCARTHY TO IR, DAVIS JOINS ACTIVE ROSTER

Kyle McCarthy was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury, ending his rookie season, Studesville said on Monday morning. Later in the day, the team announced that wide receiver Britt Davis has been promoted from the practice squad to fill the roster spot.

McCarthy, a safety, was injured on a kickoff on the final play of the first half on Sunday in Arizona.

Davis originally signed with the team on Aug. 5 and finished the preseason with four catches for 63 yards. The Northern Illinois product was waived on Sept. 4 and signed to the Broncos practice squad a day later.

In other injury news, the interim head coach said he is hopeful that Darcel McBath will be able to return Sunday in Oakland after missing the last three games due to injury. McBath traveled to Arizona and worked out on the field pregame before he was ultimately declared inactive for the game.

Studesville also said he would need to see how rehab goes over the next few days for other injured players, such as Brian Dawkins and Matt Prater, before making judgements about their availability this week.

    3rd pick huh? Nice!

  2. strandoftds says:

At least the Texans had some fight in them until the end. They never gave up. They thought they where gonna win that game. You can`t say that about our Bronco`s this last game. No fight in them.

  3. milehighmagic88 says:

Yeah strand, I was just thinking I really wouldn’t mind having Kubiak run things. The Texans showed tonight that they never give up on their coach. That’s something we haven’t seen from our guys in a while.

  4. strandoftds says:

Ya 88, rather sad I`d say. Kyle Mccarthy put on IR today. Torn ACL. Signed WR Britt Davis.

  5. socalbigbroncofan says:

The only reason i still watch the games is to see Tebow play. 3 games left still waiting to see him start. This is what i by the NFL ticket for to see the broncos lose every game what a wais of money. cant wait for this season to be over. trade some players, get some good draft picks, and get a whole new coaching staff and hopefully see Tebow start a fresh season. lets go BRONCOS 2011. oh yea i still want CHUCKY. CHUCKY, CHUCKY, CHUCKY. TEBOW, TEBOW, TEBOW. I say Chucky you say Tebow, ready CHUCKY……

  6. raidrhadr says:

Unfortunately our problem is we have some fighting, some not and some not good enough anyway if they did fight. That is the identity of a bad team….our team. Only fighting for next years roster spot or trade value. Leadership goes out the window.

  7. strandoftds says:

I`m with you Socalbigbroncofan. We`re in this together bro. TEBOW- CHUCKY!!

  8. milehighmagic88 says:

Yeah, what this team needs is two spend every draft pick for the next two or three years on guys who were great leaders on their teams in college. Then we can think about competing again.

  9. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Had alot of reading up to do. To BFE yea, Dennison just left this year. Didnt leave with kubiak. He was our Oline coach last year which was why we werent this bad but the power o is not his thing and he probably couldnt put of with mcdonald. Notice how the rungame in houston went from pedestrian to phenomenal this season…Rick Dennnison is why. If we get Kub back Dennison must come along.

Im glad to hear that they will prepare tebow for a starting role. Thats what I said in the last blog…that if they truly intend to start him for the home game…they need to start getting him real reps this weak. Wouldnt mind him in Oakland cuz I don’t think the kid can be “derailed” but Ill take him for the home games.

Houston sure put on a fight…I was rooting for the broncos south :-) lol

  10. milehighmagic88 says:

Or maybe that’s not it. Right now it seems like we have a lot of guys who are known as good leaders but no one is following. Maybe we need to draft guys who will follow the leaders… I don’t know… But something about our personnel has to change.

  11. strandoftds says:

Winners, we want winners. With winning attitudes.

  12. milehighmagic88 says:

That’s what we need! I couldn’t come up with it on my own. lol

  13. strandoftds says:

Everything I just said started with a W………. World Wide Web…….

  14. milehighmagic88 says:

    LOL

  15. 1nOnlyTRB says:

“Worst-case scenario, Tebow goes into Oakland and stinks up the joint. So what. They’ve stunk for weeks. Sticking with Orton at this point would be like spraying cologne on a wild boar. What’s the point?”

“I don’t care what Tebow does against the Raiders next week. It cannot be any worse than 59-14. No way.

    What if he wins?”

I would have started tebow a long time ago. people associate starting a rookie QB with giving up the season…But what if he wins…

That what i got from the vic lombardi article. Great article. Im glad its not only the fans this doesnt make sense too. For goodness sakes We spent 3 picks to get a first and he is probably the highest payed benched QB in the NFL right now lol

  16. strandoftds says:

Hey yall. Congrats to Peyton!! He got 1000 yards! Yahooo!!!

  17. milehighmagic88 says:

Yeah TRB, I don’t get why starting a rookie QB is still associated with giving up. If you look at the past few seasons, rookie QBs have been excellent. Times have changed. It’s time we get with the program.

  18. strandoftds says:

Maybe somethings wrong with the water in Denver.

  19. milehighmagic88 says:

Actually look at Cutler’s rookie season. He only played five games, but in my personal opinion that was his best season as a Bronco. He played with a ton of confidence and made very few mistakes.

Why not give Tebow the same chance?

  20. strandoftds says:

He will. When we`re at home against Houston. If they don`t start Tebow the stadium will be half full. Know what I mean. And the coaches know that.

  21. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah TRB,I was watching the Texans Offense and thinking to myself this is Denver South,we both were thinking the same thing bro!
But our Offense is totally different now,the Texans took the Offense we used to have and I wished we had it back.lol.

I’d like to see Kubiak and Dennison come back home if they get fired in Houston,we need to get back to the Bronco way around here!

    BFE

  22. milehighmagic88 says:

I just read an article by Bill Williamson on the ESPN AFC West Blog, and he mentioned that Bowlen and Co. aren’t necessarily anxious to play Tebow now because they like Orton for the moment and they are open to sticking with the plan of not starting him until 2012.

All I can say is are you kidding me?

That was McD’s plan. Are you telling me when we hire a new HC we’re still going to stick with McD’s plan? C’mon… Let the guy play and develop. I know Rivers and Rodgers benefited from waiting a couple years, but this situation is totally different. We need a spark right now! I don’t think waiting helps anyone in this case.

    Just my humble opinion, though.

  23. Yovi21 says:

AHHH this Tebow talk is killing me! I dont think he should necessarily start THIS WEEK, but I do think he should get live reps, at least 10 or 15. If Tebow says he is ready to go then he is ready to go! Bowlen, I am pleading to you once again. Tell stud, McCoy, or anyone who is important to START Tebow the last two weeks, Invesco might be empty come the 26th if you don’t, just a fair warning.

Raiders win this week 42-17! Orton will throw at least one pick, I can feel it! I am officially disgusted!
p.s. sorry about the negativity, I just can’t get past the fact that every time I think this season couldn’t get any worse or disappointing, by some miracle it does. Other than Tebow 2010 has been a crappy year to be a Broncos fan!

  24. calibronco15 says:

who do us fans have to talk to this is some b.s. we want tim out there on the field not kyle tim is our future and plus kyle is a second string back at best. am from cali and never been laughed at so bad for being a bronco fan till this season=( play tim keep us happy pat!!

  25. dcftcollins says:

    raiders 45

    broncos 14

  26. baylinorcrush says:

This is too big not to re-post, Coop just answered us all in his last blog and this is the bomb he planted on us:

I’ll create a rumor or just a educated guess. Maybe Elway goes a step farther and gets a group of investors together and buys the team. What would that look like. Frankly, anything John does with this team will be welcomed by me. In the dictionary, next to competitor is his picture.

And this is my ensuing comment response to him:

Coop, you sure got some big ones, coming on here telling us maybe Elway will get some investors and buy the team, WOW. That absolutely shocks me and pleases me at the same time that you can actually come on here and say stuff like that, I have all of a sudden gain ever more respect for you for speaking your mind to that extent and for the organization for allowing this much freedom of speech from one of their writers on this site.

Anyhow the shocking thing is so far I have never heard anywhere the notion that Bowlen would ever consider selling the whole team!!! Of course many have mentionned Elway buying a share and I have been pleading for a year now here for Bowlen do sell him one so he could get some needed cash, but that’s about it. Rather Denver sports writers are usually telling us Bowlen will never sell… But that??? Flabbergasted!

But when I think it over, with the fact Bowlen’s health is not very conducive to running such enterprise anymore with the reported short memory losses and the reported lack of interest by Bowlen’s children to take over the team, eventually what does that leave? Bowlen’s only other child to speak of, Elway, and he has money, and he knows people with money and he is Mr. Broncos, he loves the Broncos and he would love nothing more than to finish his working life with the Broncos, so here comes your “rumor or educated guess”!!!

Well, Coop, if that ever happens I will be the first one to say to everyone I heard it from Cooper first, that’s for sure!

  27. baylinorcrush says:

…for Bowlen to sell him one…

  28. oldsouthstander says:

Severalk problems with the “rumor” started by Coop:
    1) Phipps have right of first refusal on ANY Bronco stock that Bowlen sells. Bowlen tried to sell 5% to John shortrly after he retired and Phipps to them to court and won.
    2) John and a group of inverstors won’t work either. NFL rewq

  29. baylinorcrush says:

And Dave Krieger is adding his two bits talking about exactly what position is Elway going to hold:

Elway has been explicit that he doesn’t want to coach or be a general manager by the traditional definition — the combined talent scout/administrator who spends 12-hour days at the office, many of them breaking down video of one college player after another.

The job he really wants is owner. But unless Pat Bowlen has changed his mind about selling, that one’s not open.

    And the plot thickens, hahaha.

  30. GiveMeKub says:

Are there any football fans on this thing? I mean people that actually watch the game with their heads and not just their hearts (which are confused anyway). Kyle Orton is second in the NFL in passing yards, tied for sixth in touchdown passes and eighth in passer rating. Yes, we’re losing, but there’s a lot more to it than Kyle Orton. If anybody on here thinks that Tim Tebow would have put up those kind of numbers you are either deranged or 15 years old or, possibly, both. Is that what it is…you’re all 15? Are there any adults around? And CHUCKY? Good grief. Shut up and start trying to ruin a different team.

  31. oldsouthstander says:

Two major problems with the “rumor” started by Coop:
    1) Phipps have right of first refusal on ANY Bronco stock that Bowlen sells. Bowlen tried to sell 5% to John shortrly after he retired and Phipps to them to court and won.
    2) John and a group of inverstors won’t work either. NFL requires ONE person be a majority owner. That means John would have to come up with about $400,000,000.00 on his own. He’s rich, but not that rich.

  32. stevecan2 says:

Not a bad game for me, Joe Flacco is my starting Fantasy FB QB1. I benched Orton 3 weeks ago.

  33. broncochick1 says:

I am a loyal fan and a season ticket holder and I have never seen such a horrible team wear the orange and blue. And now we are too chicken to play Tim Tebow…. This is the only glimmer of hope our team has this year. I don’t care if Tebow plays horrible, because I think Bronco fans are smart enough to know there will be growing pains. For the past 2 weeks I have been watching this trash on television to see if they will put Tebow in, yet all we see is Orton under-throwing balls or throwing INT’s. My question to the Broncos Organization is no matter how bad Tebow is could it be any worse than losing to the Arizona Cardinals 43-13??? Against a third string quarterback by the way.

I will be a fan until the end, but if Tebow isn’t starting by the Houston game I think I may spend some time with my family rather than watching the Broncos get killed by the Houston Texans with Orton on the field. In fact, I will even feel okay with it because I love Gary Kubiak so much. What a sad organization we have become Pat. Look at your watch Pat….. It’s Tebow time… This team needs a spark and fans need something to look forward to or Bronco Nation will suffer and in turn so will the Bronco Organization. I know I am going to think long and hard about my season ticket holder status this off-season. I work hard for my money and I’m not sure tickets for this team are worthy of my hard earned income.

  34. BeastFromEast92 says:

Well who woulda thunk it,McD is gone (thank God) Stud is the interim HC (poor choice, but justified) we are 3-10 (never thought it would get this bad) Tebow is the highest paid backup QB in the league (terrible waste of talent).

But look on the bright side,it can’t get any worse!
Elway is coming aboard to help!
A lot of names are being tossed around as the new HC and GM.

I have my choices, but it dosen’t really matter who I want,or any other fans want,it’s up to management who gets the jobs.

I don’t think Kubiak will be the next HC of the Broncos, but I sure would like it if Houston fires him,and he or Dennison came in and took over as OC,either one of them could return and instill the Broncos way of the zoneblocking that most of us agree we need.

I don’t really have a preference right at this time for DC,don’t really know who will be available, but management needs to take a long hard look before hiring one,we have been suffering for a long time on Defense (not counting the 6-0 run with Nolan). We need a good quality DC that can instill the knowledge of how a good Defense should be runned, seems like all the great Defensive teams (Steelers.Ravens,Jets) can lose their Defensive coaches and still not skip a beat, that’s because once the players learn how to dominate on Defense they remember how it’s done no matter who the DC is,that’s what we are missing.

Don’t get aggravated to much about the rest of this season,it’s like the blind leading the blind right now.Have patience (I know it’s hard). We will get back on track next season,it will take time to recooperate after what McD has done to this team, but as the best franchise in the NFL,we will not give up,and we will be on top once again!

  35. broncochick1 says:

Hey Steve maybe Shawn Mueler should look into buying the team.

  36. broncochick1 says:

    Oh wait….

  37. baylinorcrush says:

givemekub, what kind of a morning are you having??? I don’t see anyone here who has ever said Tebow would of put up the numbers Orton has, all I hear is since the season is lost some fans want to find out how Tebow can perform under real game time as a starter, like the ultimate preseason game experience, at least that’s what I want. And I’m not 15, I’m 56 and I might be deranged, but that would be debatable, so what exactly are you? Mr. Know it all, 35 year old yuppie?

  38. broncochick1 says:

Also for all the Orton backers I would like you to think of a few key points.

    1. We drafted Tebow in the first round and we gave up multiple picks to do so. Shouldn’t we act like it was a decent pick and give him a chance.

    2. We are 3-10 and we are looking at a top 5 pick. Has anyone heard of Andrew Luck??? He is a great Stanford Quarterback (remember the last Stanford Quarterback we had????) The kid has only completed 70% of his passes this year in a pro-style offense. Maybe it would be wise to see if Tebow can play or not before we pass on a franchise quarterback.

    3. Tebow is arguably the most popular player in the NFL and we are not playing him for a guy who had a QB rating of 27 against the Arizona Cardinals. I could have a QB rating of 27 against the Cardinals.

    4. Back to my original point….. Could it get any worse than last week with Tebow starting at QB?

  39. stevecan2 says:

Hmmm, interesting point brought up. A real fan watches their team with their heads and not their hearts.

Any how, I watch with both. Kyle Orton is my QB, There comes a point in time however, that when he no longer can get things done, then it is what it is. He has played horrible the last two games. Not even taking into account what some of the anti-Orton fans have pointed out, using my head it is obvious. He has over used his arm and fatigue is obvious. Let Orton start and when and if he is unable to perform, then sit him. His career is not over, the season is done. Stop the bleeding. Let him recuperate. Bring in a fresh arm and let’s re ignite our offense.

  40. baylinorcrush says:

I’m chewing, still not getting any flavor out of it though, haha.

  41. stevecan2 says:

    * and a pair of fresh legs. A QB that is capable of scrambling and possibly even running for a first down on a blown 3rd and long pass play.

  42. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway point being made is we have all sorts here, all genders, all ages, all professions, all races, and we don’t belittle anyone because of their make up, we just are all here as Bronco fans and contribute to the best of our abilities, however different they may be. There is is absolutely no call for ever coming on here and insulting the blog as a whole in the demeaning way you did, that sir is a very childish thing to do and I don’t respect it one bit, specially coming from an artist, I would of thought you guys have better vision of things than most. Hopefully this was just a first time faux pas and we can move on to constructive things from now on.

  43. GiveMeKub says:

Oh, gosh. I’m sorry. I was just joking around. Really.

Eek. I don’t want to run away tail between my legs, but I was really just messing around. You know…what do they call it…jawing.

Apologies to one and all. Seriously. I guess my tone was out of line. Thanks for setting me straight. The blogs I normally post on are sort of more rough and tumble, I guess. But do know that it was absolutely not intended to offend.

    Well, this is embarrassing…

    Um.

    Happy Holidays…?

  44. baylinorcrush says:

It’s all cool, I just have to stand up when someone calls all of us deranged 15 year olds, glad to see you understand that now.

  45. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    Balylin,

Im surprised you dignified givemekubs asinine rant with a response because I sure as heck wasn’t gonna. And now he has just revealed he was just trying to stir stuff up. For a person asking if the posters are 15, that sure was immature….

Nice response however. Woulda liked more about how ortons numbers lie but well dont lol. TRB out…

  46. stevecan2 says:

“the blogs I normally post on are sort of more rough and tumble,”

I post on political blogs…. It is rough for me too, to come here to Bronco Country and realize I am amongst friends, and that the need to be on the constant offensive is not necessary.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, you know I don’t shut up easy, LOL.

  48. 1nOnlyTRB says:

aww darn it … he makes an apology before I get my post out sigh … well lets all pretend i posted before his apology lol. TRB out..

  49. GiveMeKub says:

Sorry all. This will be the last time I post. It’s not very fun. Go Broncs, anyway.

  50. 1nOnlyTRB says:

haha I know you don’t. And usually I woulda responded but that post was just so straight out of left field, that I ignored it and kept on reading other posts lol
