Sports Authority Field a CONCACAF Gold Cup Host

January 23rd, 2013 - 11:27am by Gray Caldwell

This summer, Sports Authority Field at Mile High will host another form of football.

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Football Association (CONCACAF) announced Wednesday that the Broncos’ home stadium is one of 13 venues that will welcome the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup from July 7-28, 2013.

“We would like to thank all cities and venues in the United States for their interest in our Confederation’s Gold Cup and congratulate the ones that have been selected to host its 2013 edition.” CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb said in a statement. “CONCACAF is looking forward to a successful tournament, working in close partnership with both stadium and local authorities, while expanding the reach of our competition to a larger number of fans in more locations throughout the United States.”

It’s the first time the region’s premier national team tournament will visit Sports Authority Field, in addition to seven other new venues.

In 2011, the tournament drew more than 600,000 fans through 13 match days, including nine sell-outs.

In alphabetical order, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and the United States have already qualified for the tournament. The final spot will be decided in a match between Guatemala and Panama.

Taking place every two years, the Gold Cup has established itself as the region’s most popular national team tournament, routinely drawing capacity crowds and millions of viewers across the region. Featuring the best players from the confederation, the tournament includes the top 12-nations in the region.

Other host cities include Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Hartford, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Portland, Salt Lake City and Seattle.

Eifert is pretty good but I think he would be long gone before we have a shot at him and we really should focus on the DT and MLB spots before we start looking at luxuries like Eifert that aren’t necessary.

Lol Tide. I like Lacy a lot. Would love to have him in Denver. Im just not on the RB in the 1st round side of things.

Speaking of which Tide. I have been waiting to see you on here because I wanted to ask your thoughts about Nico Johnson. I havnt seen or heard much about him and could use a Bama fans opinion on him.

RH I agree we need a DT. But I think we could really use a player with Eiferts ability. I like the TEs we have but to me none of them can do what Eifert can.

From the NFL rumors going around it sounds like NE and Denver are looking at any possibility for a DB. DRC Reed Revis to name a few.

Funny you asked about Nico, AB. Just read an article about him down at the Senior Bowl yesterday. He was pretty darn productive for Bama, but didn’t start many games last season….5 or 6 I think, but he played in all of them best I can remember. Great kid, hard worker, and I really hope he has a nice pro career. Sometimes it’s hard to know how things will turn out for some of these guys due to circumstances and opportunities, but I wish him well. I don’t think it will take too much to coach him up in the pros.

Thanks Tide. Nice article. He seems to be a good kid and keeps his head on straight. Projected 3-4 rounder I believe. I wouldnt mind taking him if we dont talk a MLB sooner. From what little I have seen over the last 20 or so minutes I like a lot of what ive seen. Will need coached up but all incoming rookies do.

  8. BroncosYeoMan says:

he is a great run defender from what I just watched .

  9. Tide Bronco says:

BYM, if you’re referring to Nico Johnson, he really is! And pass rusher, too. His NFL idol is Ray Lewis, and that’s who he wants to pattern his football career after. Lofty goal. Hope he gets close. The ON FIELD part of it, that is. Plus, he’s a huge Ravens fans, and having for Bama greats, Courtney Upshaw and Mount Cody playing for them now only intensifies it. Hope he plays well in the game Saturday.

You can’t convince me that if we’d had Revis in the AFC Championship game we would’ve won. We beat ourselves.
