Sperry Joins Squad

Sperry

The Broncos were awarded tight end Kory Sperry off waivers from Miami on Tuesday. The team also waived Tyler Polumbus and officially released Akin Ayodele.

Sperry, a Colorado native who played collegiately at Colorado State, notched three catches for 31 yards and a touchdown in eight games, including one start, as a rookie with the Dolphins last season. Miami released the 6-foot-4, 238-pound tight end yesterday.

Polumbus played 31 games, including eight starts, the past two seasons with the Broncos. The former college free agent from Colorado filled in for Ryan Harris last season when the tackle missed eight games due to injury.

Ayodele signed with the Broncos in April, hoping to crack the rotation at linebacker in his ninth NFL season. On Tuesday, McDaniels said the team was releasing Ayodele now to give him a chance to catch on with another team.

ayodele looked good last 2 games but they probably didn’t want to keep him on special teams and he wasnt going to start. mario haggen looked good last season.

  2. My Blood Is Orange says:

ayodele thats too bad looked like he had some energy on the field. looks like coach might like worrel williams potential. he looked get off on clean breaks on blitz’ on some highlights i saw

The writing was on the wall for giant Polumbus after his poor showings coming in for Harris last year, guess he didn’t show enough improvement this off season, so here goes a guy with Colorado ties, in comes a guy with more Colorado ties, one team’s reject is another’s treasure, haha. Makes you wonder if this is all based on McD having no confidence on yet another one of his draft pics of last year, Richard Quinn. It certainly is not a decision based on either Graham or Branson, just saying. Last year draft gets worse the further we go along….

i meant “he looked good, he got off on clean breaks on blitz’

WOW! another tight end and releasing Tyler! I am getting really concerned about our O-line. I have been in a holding pattern till now; waiting to see how things pan out. We have serious passing game if we can get an O-line to anchor us. I know this is not something new, but what can be done about it? Who is out there that can come in and play? And when are we going to feel good about the run game? And was it just me or did we get no pressure really from the defense in these last two games? Lots or concern here; but I am still super excited and looking forward to the next match up.

  6. hometeam007 says:

Baylin, agreed. Last year’s draft is looking pretty bad. If we can just salvage Moreno/ Ayers, maybe not all is lost.
Makes you wonder about McDaniels/ Xanders approach to players. They were so excited about these guys they moved up to get them.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

Agreed, 2010 is the year of the O line, have said that all off season, they go we go, they don’t we’re done and out, that simple.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, I don’t know what McD has got going with Miami, but the number of players we have gotten from them since he got here is just ridiculous, even more than from the Pats

  9. hometeam007 says:

Right. I was wondering if it had something to do with the conditioning of the players in that climate combined with the Parcels talent pool.

  10. Bones1965 says:

I remeber a game Sperry had against the Buffs and he was the best player on the field. I hope he can stick as a practice squad guy.

  11. hometeam007 says:

well, what does the O-line look like at the start of regular season?
    Clady
    Kuper
    Walton
    Beadles/ Hochstein
    Harris

So we need help at center, because Hochstein can help at RG. The rest of this line should be stellar. What gives?

  12. hometeam007 says:

Ok, switch the guards and they have Hochstein helping at Center which I think is a mistake. But at the start of the season Batiste gets moved to the interior. and he should thrive inside. Right?

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Talking about conditioning down there with the climate, that’s pretty much what we will be up against on the first game in Jacksonville. I guess Parcells has assembled extra talent down there, but maybe McD just has some inside guys he knows pretty well in Miami from his days in the AFC East division, either way it’s kind of eerie. 31 teams to pick from, and Miami keeps popping up.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

The current depth chart of the O line:

LT Ryan Clady D’Anthony Batiste Zane Beadles
LG Zane Beadles Seth Olsen Eric Olsen
    C J.D. Walton Russ Hochstein
RG Chris Kuper D’Anthony Batiste Stanley Daniels
    RT Ryan Harris Paul Duncan

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Interesting to see Beadles as third team at left tackle and first team at left guard. And Batiste second team both left tackle and right guard, both sides and different position, pretty wild.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/442476-new-england-patriots-logan-mankins-willing-to-sit-out-season

Check out Logan Mankins! What are the chances we can do a deal here?

  17. baylinorcrush says:

All of a sudden with Polumbus out we are short at right tackle, only two deep.

  18. baylinorcrush says:

Many of us here wanted Logan in free agency, I included, but it’s all about money with him, to get him you are going to have to fork out a ton, sure would help our O line instantly though, doubt Bowlen is ready to fork that over now, he has forked over a lot lately and it’s a bit late to be spending that kind of money I would think.

  19. hometeam007 says:

Ok, on another note, what if our three amigos at running back actually decide to show up this year? Each of them at their best could make this better than earth, wind and fire..

  20. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Still think we should splurged for Pouncey, or at least Iaupati. But lets give our young guys a shot I supposed. Plus Pounceys brother is coming out next year I believe, and He is supposed to be a good Oline man as well.

Anyway, glad to have sperry on board. Plain and simple. He is a recieving TE. some measure him at 6’4 but Ive seen some say 6’5 and even 6’6. Put bluntly, He is taller than Branson. And I hear he has pretty good straight line speed and soft hands. Quinn will inherit Graham as the blocker, but Sperry or Branson is required to replace Shefflers TE production. Nice Add. Hope it works out.

And yes, 2009 was a bad draft year, from tradign a first round pick for a 2nd pick. to drafting phonzy, to drafting a blocking TE in the second round. Only silver linings are Darcel McBath and Bruton aint bad at all. And Moreno who I think is good but needs a line and maybe Ayers shows up this year….

  21. baylinorcrush says:

Vance Johnson, Ricky Nattiel and Mark Jackson wouldn’t go for it, LOL.

  22. Orange_Crusher says:

Maybe this year we will start off slow and Finish Strong for a change….?

how bout start off strong and finish strong

  24. krballer says:

polumbus didn’t perform well during his time here. i don’t know what some of you are watching, but in that last preseason game, i noticed ayodele was a bit slow to react (e.g. rb takes handoff and about to turn the corner but it takes ayodele a second for it to register and move his legs). rewatch the game play by play.

  25. krballer says:

i tried singling out worrell williams but he was out of picture view a lot of the time. i believe he was in zone coverage a lot with a few blitzes thrown in (which were picked up pretty well by detroit)

  26. sndvl says:

Ok! Get healthy is #1 on my list. Check
#2-stop the run. Good test on Sunday.
    #3- Stay healthy. Very important
#4- STOP THE RUN. That’s key
#5- Beat the effin Raiders in MILE HIGH
This losing 2 of 3, had it not been for a timely timeout, can not continue. Must not continue. Circle the date. Highlight it. We must put a stop to this chicanery. This is our house.

  29. Manny 01 says:

come on denver!!! Be healthy for the beginning of the season!!

  30. hometeam007 says:

Now that we have Clady and Kuper back, Are we agreed that the weakest part of the O-line is center? If so, I am reading that Jason Spitz (packers) and Justin Hartwig (steelers) could be up for trade. I think it would be a wise move to increase depth at that position and give J.D. a chance to mature.

  31. Ohio says:

    Clady
    Kuper
    Walton
    Beadles/ Hochstein
    Harris

Can somebody tell me what is so wrong with this O-line? I like all these guys……I’m not one bit concerned with the O-line. I’m more concerned with our running game. We need a pass catching, route running tight end (who’s going to step here) and I’ve yet to see us generate any sort of pass rush in the 2 games we’ve played. Stafford had all day to throw as did Palmer. Maybe we are holding back on our blitz packages for the regular season????? I want to see the D get after the Steelers QB’s on Sunday night!

  32. hometeam007 says:

I can easily agree with you on the defense pass rush, it is not even noticeable, however I think they are playing conservative in the pre-season. The O-line had an awful game against Detroit, do you feel otherwise?
