Broncos punter Britton Colquitt nearly turned in a historical outing on Sunday, finishing with an impressive stat line: six punts for a gross average of 55.8 yards and a net of 51.0 yards. Both his gross and net averages led the league’s punters in Week 2.
The 51-yard net average is the fourth highest single-game net average in NFL history by a player with at least six punts in a game, and the 55.8-yard single-game gross average ties for tenth all-time (min. 6 punts).
Had it not been for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against the Broncos that negated an 82-yard punt in the fourth quarter, Colquitt’s gross average would have been 60.0 and his net would have improved to 58.5 yards.
The 60.0-yard gross punting average would represent the highest for a single game in NFL history and the 58.5-yard net average would rank second in league annals.
Additionally, the 82-yard punt would have matched the seventh longest in NFL history.
Colquitt, who said that the 82-yard punt was the longest he’s ever unleashed in a game, knew he got all of the ball as soon as it left his foot.
“Once I felt it, you know you got a hold of it and it’s going to be whatever your max is,” Colquitt said. “It’s just like everything happened the right way.”
As it was, Colquitt’s efforts vs. Cincinnati were enough for Sports Illustrated’s Peter King to name him the NFL Special Teams Player of the Week in his weekly “Monday Morning Quarterback” Column.
“It wasn’t only the six punts for a 55.8-yard average, with an amazing 51.0-yard net. It was the fact that he had no bad punts,” King wrote. “How many times has a punter punted six times in a game, with the worst one being a 49-yarder? His punts traveled 57, 58, 59, 49, 57 and 55 yards in a 24-22 Denver win.”
“It always starts with the first one,” Colquitt said. “You want to start out the day with a good one. It just gives you confidence and as long as you keep hitting them good, you have that confidence for each one.”
Colquitt built momentum last year, which carried through the preseason and into the 2011 season. This preseason, Colquitt led the league with a 44.2-yard net punting average this preseason and ranked third with a gross average of 50.1 yards.
“I was a little worried and I was hoping that I didn’t peak too soon,” Colquitt said, laughing. “The preseason is really important, especially with kicking, because you’re not only playing a quarter or something like that. I think it’s really good practice and it gets you ready for the games so I just wanted to really work at it and be as consistent as I could and hopefully make it pour over into regular season practice and games.”
Since Week 12 of last season, Colquitt ranks third in the NFL with a gross average of 47.8 yards per punt. He finished last year tied for first in the league with six games with a 50+yard gross punting average.
Colquitt said he did not change much mechanically from a year ago, but used the offseason to focus on fundamentals.
“The steps are the biggest thing,” he said. “Keeping short steps enables the drop to usually be good. I got away from holding it a little higher – a lot of times you think you get a better punt or better hang time the higher you hold it, but the lower you hold it – you’re putting it down to your foot pretty much.”

Glad to have him back. Was mad when McDaniels cut him … just another thing the “boy wonder” knew nothing about.
He comes from the punting Colquitts. They are like the Manning of Punting and He is Peyton, Making his brother in KC Eli lol.
Wish that 82 yard punt stood. It was quite stellar. Give the guy the blocking he needs and he will boot it everytime. Hope he remains a Bronco for a long time.
Later days, TRB out…
I was broken hearted when they took away Britton Colquitt’s punt last week! You rarely see a guy CRUSH a punt like that! It was like when they took away Darrent Williams return for a SCORE, just because people were on the field!!! Why they got to call those DUMB penatlies???
GO BRONCOS!!!
Its kind of frustrating that I can’t find a Colquitt jersey anywhere
keep up the good job.
I think as long as our o-line plays like they did week 2 rather than week 1, and we can get a decent running game going. AND. As long as our defense doesn’t allow Chris Johnson to have a big game like our week 1 performance against McFadden, we win. Denver’s D will definitely have there work cut out for them this Sunday.
DENVER D WILL GET 3 SACKS 2 FOR DOCTOR DOOM AND MILLER HIGH LIFE.
24-17 BRONCOS
We just need to do what we did last year to CJ (only team to not give up a run of 10+ yards to him all year) and then we can walk away with a win.
Broncos 28
Titans 17
Watched Colquitt punt at UT in college, also watched his brother Dustin punt at UT,both guys are great at what they do,I didn’t like the move to get rid of Kern at the time, but am glad now we did,Britton Colquitt will make the Broncos a great punter for many years, glad to have him!!!
Also glad to see DJ,Doom,Moreno, and LLoyd back at practice, hope they all are able to play Sunday…wished Champ was back!
Titans 31
Broncos 20
hope I’m wrong!!!
BFE, you’ve been out.. we figured out the real reason why they won’t play TT…
Check out the Sept 20th 7:01pm post on the Elway Live blog…
TRB……a little story about the Punting Colquitts!
hope yall enjoy reading it:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/sports/football/14punters.html?ref=sports
OC……is this crap legit????
Not playing TT because of the messed up contracts is a BIG TIME BLUNDER,and ain’t kool man!!!
This was supposed to be a CHANGED team with EFX running the show!!!
So TT has to be held back another year, because of $$$$$$ that’s B.S.
Might just be me, but something seems rotten in Denmark. How is more fans are picking us to lose this season, with EFX; compared to the same time last season, with McD?
Oh, that’s right. It’s because Orton is starting.
GO BRONCOS! (not the Orton Broncos or Denver Tebows- DENVER BRONCOS)
Ah! I forgot this is Brittons blog.
Punters are such an integral part of the game. Hopefully he’s an asset for many years!
Doesn’t Mr. Kern still play for our opponents this week?
The reason I picked us to lose is we barely beat an average Cincy team at HOME,and the Titans clobbered the Ravens at Home last week,we are playing them at their house, where they beat us last year!!!
Orton starting might have a little something to do with it too!
Most of us are tired of average Orton taking us nowhere but the cellar dwellars that we are!
Time for a Spark…….from the Titanium spark plug (TEBOW)!!!
Even tho it might not happen this year,I’ll still Chant Tebow in my living room everytime Orton falls on his face or drops the ball.
Mike Horan, Tom Rouen, Micah Knorr, Todd Sauerbrun, Paul Ernster, and Brett Kern
How about Mitch Berger? Man, McD even botched the punters. That takes a special kind of person. Which is why I’m so amazed that there isn’t more optimism (and a little faith) in this new regime!
We won that game last year BFE! A late TD pass in the 4th from Orton to Bucky.
Last I checked, BFE, were 1-1. A long ways away from being a cellar dweller.
Which may just end up belonging to KC now that Charles is done for the year.
Well, I am predicting 6 wins, that’s mucho optimism from 4 last year in my book.
And I got caught up with all the predictions guys.
It’s a real tight race now, LOL, 22 have us beating the Titans, 21have us losing to the Titans.
BFE it’s true but not Elways or Fox’s fault, it’s more of a McXanders blundering contract crap on our team….
Not to mention that TT must be just plain not paying attention to signing a contract that will prohibit his playing time for three years… Tebow and Quinns agents are idiots… Escalator contracts for rookies are a guarantee that the team will bench your expensive butts if they can’t afford your potential sucess…. It financially undermines the ability of the HC to truthfully put the best team on the field..
But really there is nothing that Elway or Fox can do but play Orton and do damage controll until like the ninth game of the season when they can put TT in and not have to wory about racking up the extra 11mil in the 55% playing time escalator..
I think Tebow needs to restructure his contract immediately and get rid of the money escalators if he really wants to be a starting QB for my team. He already has more money then he could ever need… Unless he plans on saving the entire world of famine….? lol
Orton took all the millions left in the kitty and Tebow needs to sacrafice the Broncos future money if he plans on playing QB for us…jomho
RE-STRUCTURE YOUR CONTRACT TEBOW!!!!!!!!!
ILMSDB!!!!!!!!!!$$$$$$
Oh yeah sorry I was wrong we did win that game last year!
I keep thinking we lost it,Hell we lost so many!
Easy sndvl,if it wasn’t so easy to rile you up talking about Orton a lot of people might cut you some slack, and we might beat out KC for 3rd spot since Charles and Berry are both lost for the season!
Plus we still have 14 games to go and the schedule is getting ready to get VERY hard!!!
OC……sounds like a clusterf@*%!!!!!!
I guess we’ll have to wait till week 9 to see TT ???
man idk if I can wait that long!!!!
btw,I thought it was a freaking joke to line up TT at WR,I know we were short on WRs,but they could’ve lined up a RB or a DB!!!
I dont think the loss predictions have anything to do with Orton Sndvl …while many are anti Orton I dont think thats always the case. Last year many people were still believing that the 6-0 wasn’t a fluke and that we could do it again and that we were good enough. This year however, after suffering a 4-12 season … coming out on opening night and playing badly, mixed with the fact that we beat a sorry Cincy team with a rookie QB and WR combo that torched us and you will see why there isn’t much faith. Add the fact that our running game while successful last week is still questionable, the Olines struggling and the fact that TN is gaining steam after a win against Baltimore and not much faith again … not to mention our full team might not be on the field. At the end of the day … people just know what they see with thier eyes. Me on the other hand … I pick us to win everytime … I may not win the competition but I never make the wall of shame either. Later days, TRB…
We can lay some blame on Mr.Bowlen as far as the money goes too, afterall it belongs to him to do whatever he wants, his choice to save it,and lose now is his choice!!!
BFE,The thing is that its easy for QBs to line up at WR … because thats who they pass to … they understand what they want from the WR and need to know the pattern so for them its easily replicable. Mix that with the fact that Tebow and Quinn don’t get much reps and probably practice passing to one another with Tebow mostly willing to play WR because he is more athletic … add a dash of Tebow willing to do anything for the team and voila … Tebow at WR. Just like many white RBs are turned into FBs, many black QBs have often been turned into recievers in the NFL because they are usually very athletic and its a relatively easy transition from QB to WR if u have the physical skills because the QB needs to know what every player on the field is doing. They also probably didn’t wanna risk a DB or RB seeing as how we are not that deep there either and they may not know the pattern like a QB would. Im sure if a TE was available … He woulda been the one to be slotted it but as it happened our TE had gone down. TRB
But I do agree to save some money, because we do need to lock up Clady long term, and LLoyd for a few more years, ain’t certain how old he is,but with Thomas not being able to stay healthy and Royal kinda off his game,LLoyd is the real deal, him and Decker should be Broncos 4 life!
TRB,I hear ya dude, but after hearing all the Tebow chants,to line him up like that just seemed like rubbing it in that he wasn’t gonna play, why couldn’t they have lined up Quinn? was he hurt too?
Might just be me but lining up a 8 million dollar QB at WR isn’t very smart!
Tebow can ALWAYS make 10 million here and 10 milllion there on just endorsements alone…
He’s making a MAJOR mistake thinking about making all those Broncos 11 millions in escalators so he can give it to foreign orphans when it would be better spent on a chance to get on the field and succeed without holding the Broncos hostage for $11mil if he does well….
I personally don’t like Tebows money rich contract any more than Orto’s 9 million dollar medocrity…….
Lest I find solice in just knowing…why we continue the QQ…
ILMSDB!!!!!!$$$$$
for the record BFE they agree and they have zero intentions of ever doing it again lol. Desperate times.
Broncos-23
Titans-17
I will make my prediction and pray to be right. Broncos win it 24-20. Hope we bring the pressure.
OC…agreed TT dosen’t need the money,he needs to play,if that means restructuring his contract (if he can) thats what he needs to do!
TRB…that’s good to know,lol.
Broncos -17
Titans-14
I can’t believe how many people are picking the titans to win. They aren’t exactly the juggernauts of the league, and Hassleback wasn’t even that great in his prime. Solid? Sure.
It will be a close game, but I saw like 10 people predicting a double digit win for Tennessee. I’ll be extremely surprised if either team wins by more than a td.
Denver 19-17 Tennessee!
Anyone know if Sharper came in for a workout? second, this game is going to be somewhat low scoring and Denver might struggle with the Titans Def line, i see it Titans 19-13 or right in that area.
btw, awesome home stand finish Rockiers 0 – 7
Tough game to predict … which Bronco team(s) (off/def/st) will show … seems we’re too thin at a lot of positions to really dominate, we’d have to win late in a squeaker … but – TN “could” win big … if they get a double digit lead, we’re done … sooooo –
Broncos 26 – Titans 22 …
You know what has really gotten me the past 2 years … the use of Royal minus the fact that he is now hurt … I wish we would stretch the field more with him. Sure he is speedy and could kill in the slot but if anyone remmembers his rookie campaign … he had alot of deep balls ala Desean Jackson, Mike Wallace, Insert raider receivers name here … point is he got big time speed and big time talent and we could use him as a burner more … but I guess first we have to establish the run so that we can catch safeties cheating … something we havent been able to do for the past 2 years. TRB
Based on recent Orton history I have a difficult time predicting any offensive redzone touchdowns. I think we will get one defensive pick for a touchdown. I think we can count on Decker to run in a long yardage pass. Our run game will be completely stuffed and there will not be any rushing touchdowns. Approx. 70 yards total on the ground. Orton will pass for around 320 yards and get us into the redzone three times from which Prater will kick 3 Field Goals. Broncos 23.
This offensive performance requires one offensive lineman to dominate and the others hold their own especially against the rush, in spite of their inexperience. I don’t expect the line to look foolish like they did against the Raiders. It will require tightends to be reading the coverage well, pick up the rush, and create a good pockets for Orton to throw from. This is what I expect to happen.
If Mays and Woodyard are able to continue shutting down the running game. Broncos could pull off a Win. But I don’t think so. I think the Titans get in the Redzone often and Hassleback will find wide open receivers. The focus of the Bronco defense will shift in the second half to stopping the pass attack and the Titans will run it in. Titans score 4 touch downs. The 2 in the first half will be passing touchdowns the two in the second half will bee rushing touch downs. Titans – 28
Broncos will win time of possession battle, and will exceed Titan production by more than 100 yards. Broncos offense will look efficient and adequate but boring except for Decker going long. (Replace with Lloyd – if he plays) The defense will look like it is dominating by limiting the run in the first half, but it will give up a lot of yards to screens and short yardage plays. Watch Mays and Woodyard and Dawk – they are worth the price of admission. Count on a slightly above average number of QB sacks – say 4 in this game. Bronco punter will keep Tenn. starting deep in their own territory, or else this could get ugly.
You can count on it – Broncs 23- Titans 28
This is fun this week but from here on out it gets ugly. Not looking forward to Broncs meeting Green Bay.
agree TRB – watching Royal rookie season was great particularly his first game against the raiders. Unfortunately he seems to get injured often and this has been setting him back.
I guess many of us are picking Tennesee as they played well last week, let’s hope there is a letdown after their impressive win over the ravens.
I think Chris Harris owes Colquitt big time. Here’s what I don’t ge they don’t even let you run out of bounds and stay out of bounds in college, do they? So as far as it being a “rookie mistake” I don’t buy that.
McD went with Mitch “Cheese” Berger at punter and he sucked…I could punt it further than him.
I love you see ya out there booming punts Colquitt, but I’d rather not see you at all having to punt.
Like I said the other day teams bring in people for work outs all the time, and Sharper left town without signing for the blogger above who asked:
We already knew about Darren Sharper, Quan Cosby and John Nalbone being at Dove Valley for work outs on Tuesday. Cosby, a wide receiver and punt returner, was signed to the active roster, and Nalbone was re-signed to the practice squad.
Five other players also got a look from the Broncos yesterday: DT Marcus Harrison; tight ends Dan Hardy and Martell Webb; and running backs Thomas Clayton, Anthony Elzy and Jalen Parmele.
Harrison played for the Bears from 2008-2010. Clayton is veteran who most recently was in Seattle, but also spent time in New England, Cleveland and San Francisco. Parmele was with the Ravens from 2008-2010, and played in 16 games — all on special teams — last year.
Former first round draft pick Demaryius Thomas has dealt with more injuries in just over a year in the NFL than many players go through in a several seasons. First was a broken foot, then a re-aggravation of the foot injury. There was also an ankle injury and a concussion during his rookie year.
Then there was the torn Achilles during the 2011 offseason. And just when Thomas was set to return to the field early — he broke his little finger on his left hand. The finger injury will keep him out up for four to six weeks, he said. He is already about two weeks into that recovery period. That could put him on track to return at after the Broncos bye week, for Week 7 at Miami on Oct. 23, or the following week home against Detroit on Oct. 30.
“I’m so anxious,” Thomas said Wednesday.
And so are we! LOL.
I saw the Tebow dog and pony show continued in Week 2. Just another move that makes me question motives. Add the contract issues and it just makes my blood boil. I can’t help it or stop it from ticking me off. No matter how much “team” mentality, etc.
Does anyone realize how hard of a pill it will be to swallow, looking forward to, Tebow’s exit from Denver, listening to the analysts and anti-Tebow fans telling me, “I told you he was not good enough to be a starting QB” when I have a good idea that he will never have been given an actual opportunity to succeed in Denver. Why can’t other people see this coming? I can take the truth, but to have never seen him in a postilion to actually prove whether or not he can do it. We may never truly know, but that won’t stop the ant-Tebow crowd whether or not he plays enough.
As far as Orton succeeding. We all know what it will take for him, and here he is at QB1 without those tools at his dispense. He is the QB1 of the Denver Broncos and no matter feast or fathom a lot of folks are ok with it. Knowing, that he doesn’t have the tools needed. I just do not get it. And the franchise is not going to build anything around Orton. So again, nothing to look forward to.
If Kyle is good enough for a deep playoff run, then sign him long term, give him what he wants and build a team that he can be successful with.
But being told an open competition in camp and pre season, we are again being lied to about how they feel about our QB’s. Blood boils even more now.
Woody voicing all my opinions of Moreno, on those of killerkod amongst few others:
let’s talk Moreno… again. When he camp to camp and talked about losing weight, and all the media (except someone close to my wallet) gushed all over him, my thought was, and I wrote it here, “What’s new?”
Moreno wasn’t a good No. 1 draft pick. He hasn’t been a special running back. He has been hurt (and, now, once more) and inconsistent and isn’t a long gainer as a runner, and doesn’t hit the hole hard and quick enough, and isn’t a quality blocker, and you get the idea.
According to my insiders, the Broncos regretted that draft decision. (As, I’m sure, McMistake regretted practically all his personal draft picks. And how is it going in St. Louis after another loss, Josh, your 19th in your last 24 games as a coach?) And Moreno wasn’t a particularly swell fellow. (I’ll give all of you my cellphone number, and explain that in private.)
Moreno is a third-down back. He will get yards as a receiver. Needs some space to start with. In two previous seasons, Moreno caught 65 passes for 585 yards (9.0-yard average) and five touchdowns.
The solution is simple. McGahee, who had 101 yards against the Bengals, on first and second and fourth downs and inside the 10, and Noshow Moreno (when he’s healthy) on third downs.
Great shape, right, hahaha
#1 back, right, hahahaha
#11 player picked in that draft, what a joke!
Acting like a clown and a fool all the time, at practice and on the field after doing meaningless things in the scope of things, I guess it rubs off on his play, a lot about football has to do with personality and he falls way short in that department, grow some Moreno and leave the kiddy stuff at home for a while, maybe that would do you good because your approach isn’t working, just saying.
And Woody concludes:
As I think we all know, Moreno is a short-termer even though he signed a five-year contract worth $16.7 million ($13.135 million guaranteed) with a possible $6.3 million in incentives. (How’s that working out, Knowshon?)
I think this will be the last year we see him here.
Please, be right. Thank you.
Woody always has a way with words.Straight-forward! I like that. Say it like it is and move on.
I left out poor Brady Quinn. Brought over here and told he was competing with KO for QB1. Obviously another lie. So the carry over from the McD atrocity continues in that sense.
Woody on Tebow:
I know that John Fox is not a big believer in Tebow. He was sort of on the fence when he got here and has fallen toward the anti-Tebow side since training camp.
I know that John Elway has told me on three separate occasions that he believes in Tebow, but that Tebow still has to become a complete quarterback. I know that Elway could possibly not be telling me the truth. Everybody else in football lies. I have chosen to believe John because I’ve known him since 1983, and I believe he told me the truth probably 90 percent of the time, on or off the record.
One of the main reasons that I became the first and only columnist or any media person to push for John’s return to the organization in the summer of 2010, and then, as the head of football operations before McDaniels was fired, was because I believe John to be an honorable, honest man. He assured me before training camp that he still had faith in Tebow. Maybe training camp or Fox or offensive coordinator Mike McCoy changed his mind.
I don’t honestly know how Pat Bowlen and Brian Xanders feel, deep down, about Tebow. Pat has shown no inclination to ever talk about the quarterback situation. He has turned over the operation, and In John He Trusts.
Xanders was, or was not, involved in the drafting of Tebow. Xanders has never told us who he was in favor of drafting, and he has distanced himself, smartly, away from McDaniels. But so many of those draft choices made while Xanders was GM-in-name-only have turned out awful. It’d be nice if he said I was in favor of X (no pun intended, but not Y and Z, or Tebow and Moreno, but not Richard Quinn and Alphonso Smith). But that’s his choice not to talk about his choices.
I know that some people in the organization don’t believe in Tebow for a moment, and I know of people in the organization who totally believe in Tebow. It’s as divided at Dove Valley as it is in the community, but the persons who make the decisions have decided not to play him this year, or if and when Kyle Orton falters and the team is actually dismissed from playoff contention, or never at all.
I don’t think (emphasis on “think”) that the Broncos are planning to trade Tebow, although I’ve heard from someone that I trust that they did discuss possibly trading him, and there was very little interest, or none at all, just as there was very little interest (Miami) in Orton.
And John Elway and John Fox did decide, whatever the revisionist history is now, to trade away Orton and let Tebow and Brady Quinn compete for the No. 1 job. That’s a fact.
I sincerely believe that if the Broncos’ EFX don’t think Tebow can play, trade him before the NFL’s Oct. 25 trading deadline.
They are responsible for this mess, not Tebow, not booing and chanting fans, not me. The Broncos begged season-ticket holders to renew. How did they do it? By promoting Tebow in their literature to the season-ticket holders. They didn’t promote Orton. They didn’t mention him because they knew the Broncos would have lost a third of their season-ticket holders if they screamed: “Buy Your Season Tickets. See Orton.”
They caused this mess by trying to trade Orton. If Elway and Fox want to distance themselves from Tebow, then trade him. Do him a favor. Do everyone here a favor. Then, all three quarterbacks will be gone at the end of the season, and they can tank all the games this season and draft Andrew Luck. We know Elway loves him. He has said that Andrew is the closest thing he has seen to himself as a college quarterback.
Obviously for respect to Mr Bowlen Woody has chosen not to go the $$$$ way, which is the real truth of the matter as we found out a couple days ago, and I can understand that, he makes a living covering the Broncos, I don’t, so I was free to talk about it.

Forgot to delete the bottom DP stuff, sorry.
I remember a long while ago I said “It may turn out that Moreno is more of a compliment to McGahee.” I got bot punched in the mouth. LOL!
I think McGahee earned the starting role and even when Moreno gets healthy, McGahee should start. I think baylinorcrush said that first…but I agree.
This is the year Moreno has to prove himself. I backed his signing, and even though he has failed thus far, he was the #1 back in the draft. Not exactly a reach as was, Thomas over Bryant and Tebow 2 rounds ahead of his time, etc.
Yet, going into the third year, he was looking good, and now hurt again. It doesn’t look too promising for him. And indeed if this year turns out to be a bust, well goodbye.
But honestly, bashing the pick, what was McD thinking drafting the #1 running back in 2009. dumb arse
