Broncos punter Britton Colquitt nearly turned in a historical outing on Sunday, finishing with an impressive stat line: six punts for a gross average of 55.8 yards and a net of 51.0 yards. Both his gross and net averages led the league’s punters in Week 2.
The 51-yard net average is the fourth highest single-game net average in NFL history by a player with at least six punts in a game, and the 55.8-yard single-game gross average ties for tenth all-time (min. 6 punts).
Had it not been for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against the Broncos that negated an 82-yard punt in the fourth quarter, Colquitt’s gross average would have been 60.0 and his net would have improved to 58.5 yards.
The 60.0-yard gross punting average would represent the highest for a single game in NFL history and the 58.5-yard net average would rank second in league annals.
Additionally, the 82-yard punt would have matched the seventh longest in NFL history.
Colquitt, who said that the 82-yard punt was the longest he’s ever unleashed in a game, knew he got all of the ball as soon as it left his foot.
“Once I felt it, you know you got a hold of it and it’s going to be whatever your max is,” Colquitt said. “It’s just like everything happened the right way.”
As it was, Colquitt’s efforts vs. Cincinnati were enough for Sports Illustrated’s Peter King to name him the NFL Special Teams Player of the Week in his weekly “Monday Morning Quarterback” Column.
“It wasn’t only the six punts for a 55.8-yard average, with an amazing 51.0-yard net. It was the fact that he had no bad punts,” King wrote. “How many times has a punter punted six times in a game, with the worst one being a 49-yarder? His punts traveled 57, 58, 59, 49, 57 and 55 yards in a 24-22 Denver win.”
“It always starts with the first one,” Colquitt said. “You want to start out the day with a good one. It just gives you confidence and as long as you keep hitting them good, you have that confidence for each one.”
Colquitt built momentum last year, which carried through the preseason and into the 2011 season. This preseason, Colquitt led the league with a 44.2-yard net punting average this preseason and ranked third with a gross average of 50.1 yards.
“I was a little worried and I was hoping that I didn’t peak too soon,” Colquitt said, laughing. “The preseason is really important, especially with kicking, because you’re not only playing a quarter or something like that. I think it’s really good practice and it gets you ready for the games so I just wanted to really work at it and be as consistent as I could and hopefully make it pour over into regular season practice and games.”
Since Week 12 of last season, Colquitt ranks third in the NFL with a gross average of 47.8 yards per punt. He finished last year tied for first in the league with six games with a 50+yard gross punting average.
Colquitt said he did not change much mechanically from a year ago, but used the offseason to focus on fundamentals.
“The steps are the biggest thing,” he said. “Keeping short steps enables the drop to usually be good. I got away from holding it a little higher – a lot of times you think you get a better punt or better hang time the higher you hold it, but the lower you hold it – you’re putting it down to your foot pretty much.”

And my last thought on Moreno, other than being disappointed in his fail status. All the Orton fans, who can’t stop from bashing the O-line for everything that fails about Kyle Orton. I really hope you give Moreno a pass. He is trying to run through that same O-line.
I honestly believe the next two McD draft pics to be gone are Moreno and Thomas. Both can’t stay healthy enough to be productive, and when Moreno is healthy he’s not as productive as we need him to be.

O.C. you were talking about TT and his contract. I was thinking (which is most dangerous at times) when these kids come out of college and this agent flops these big numbers in front of them, most of them start thinking of all the stuff (houses, cars, etc.) they can buy. All the agent is thinking about is his percentage of that contract. In TT case however, he is looking at these numbers on this contract about so much for taking the team to the playoff and sb. He says “I can do this within 3 years.” He is thinking of the kids he will be able to help, along with all of the other charities he has established or supports. He doesn’t think however about getting sidelined and not even given the chance to play to show he can do this.
I don’t know if his contract is re-negotiable at this point or not, but I figure that if he finds out that this is the reason he is not playing, he may force the agent to get some stipulations removed from the contract. Otherwise, he is going to be riding the pine for at least 7 more games this season and 8 next season. Not a good outlook.
One other thing, he can make those millions on doing all of those endorsements, but you remember how he was raked over the coals about the t-shirt add?
Do you think we’ll put the franchise tag on Orton? I mean they weren’t willing to just release Orton to save money, probably because they wanted something return for him. However the other hand Orton is not worth the franchise tag and he’ll probably just walk after this season. So basically we are paying him to play for us for one season and it looks like we’ll have similar results as last season? If it truely was about money why didn’t they just release Orton and save that $9 mill

I do believe that they owed that money regardless. Just waving or trading a player does not end contract requirements.
Weatherman, inaccurate, if Tebow plays less than 55% this year he could play all next year and the escalator not be put in motion as his contract states that the escalator goes in motion if he plays for more than 55% of the season for at least TWO seasons between 2010 and 2012, just trying to keep things straight before everybopdy goes in different directions with this.
Those whole releases Orton stuff was nothing more than a smokescreen and build this QQ more frenzy. Like bay said, after the $$$$$$$$ part of all this came to light, all of the pieces have suddenly started to make a lot of sense. The only reason they put him in last week as a receiver was to appease the fans. Makes sense. He was on the field. Orton never entertained throwing him the ball to start with.
Brian because 5.5 mil of Orton’s 9 mil contract is guaranteed, so they would of had to eaten that up.

I’m slowly relinquishing the fact that we may never get to watch Tebow start in Denver. Here’s what I think will happen, we’ll lose this rode game after another sloppy perforamance. Fox will say “well we’re 1/2 the league that didn’t win their week 3 game, one game doesn’t make the season.” He’ll keep saying that until week 17 keeping Orton the starter.

bay, I will be the first to fully admit that I know nothing about all this contract stuff. When I was growing up my dad taught me that the only contract a man needs is a handshake. We all know that this world is nothing like that in this day and age.

Even if we truly now have a money only approach in Denver, it will stay in Denver. Newer stadium, long term contract with Sports Authority. No reason to move the Broncos, financially.

Now read this part of Tebow’s contract carefully:
Value of Tebow’s contract doubles from $11.25 million (including one-time playing time bonus) to $22.5 million if he reaches multiple thresholds, including:
55 percent playing time in two of his first three seasons, 2010-12, or 70 percent playing time in 2013.
The Broncos make the playoffs, he reaches certain QB ranking thresholds, and receives unspecified honors.
Meaning if he starts even as late as in 2013 and the Broncos make the playoffs and he achieves a couple of unspecified personal goals, he would be doubling his contract to 22.5 mil.
And I think that’s what Newton contract is, 22 mil for 4 years, so if hypothetically we could get Luck next year, for about that same 22 mil we would get him for 4 years (2012, 13, 14 and 15), while Tebow’s 22.5 mil potential contract would only be two years worth (2012 and 2013). Like getting Luck for half price!
Sorry about all those numbers, as a business owner most of my working life I can’t help myself, haha. And obviously they are working overtime in the organization with all those numbers too, LOL.

I know money is everything in the NFL, but the face of the franchise must only be worth $11.25 million to them to not start Tebow, that’s what they’re saving if they don’t let him reach those incentives.

You know, to those who can’t understand all those escalators that the agents put in for their clients, back BEFORE the new CBA it made real good sense, if a player was turning out to be great he would be paid great money and still be cheaper than signing up a top draft choice, but now with the NEW CBA, it has completely demolished the whole reasoning for those escalators because top draft choices are so much cheaper with the rookie wage scale, so in essence these escalators have now become the enemy #1 of the players who have them on their contract, i.e. Tebow, but they didn’t know that when their agents wrote the contracts and signed them!!!!!
Unlucky for them, the saying is timing is everything, certailny was in this case.

gentlemen, My blast was mainly written for the suits that work for the broncos that are reviewing this blog.. I want them to know that fans are angry.. I personally don’t think Tebow’s contract is the factor. Based on FOX’s 9 plus year history as a coach, it is crystal clear that he does not like srambling QB’s. His stomach gets upset everytime a QB freelances and doesn’t throw the ball away. He would prefer for his QB to take a sack (ORTON) and limit possible turnover potential. He’s not wired for a QB running outside the pocket.. The fact is Elway should have known that before hiring the guy… We are stuck with FOX and I guarantee this is going to go down in flames. The AFC is getting tougher by the day. Houston is moving up.. Tenn is moving forward… Even Buffalo is playing ball.. We are in the back of the line, and with a coach that is unwilling to take any risks, we are in big big big trouble. Get used to it. Remember WADE PHILLIPS… Looks like ELway found his clone..

I for one, like a QB that can do it from outside the pocket. THe game is evolving, hell why can’t we get some bootlegs back in Denver, remember those. And I recall a certain play action, sort of bootleg goting for a 52 yd td last week. This philosophy from only pocket passing is past it’s effectiveness in todays league.
Pfft. Any QB with prefect protection can do it from the pocket. Even Tebow. So the fact that that is all he wants from a QB is not all that swell.
