Showing His Smarts

October 14th, 2009 - 4:22pm by Chris Gentilviso

Few NFL quarterbacks can prosper without a strong system of support in place.

For Kyle Orton, recognizing that the Broncos offered that system took a matter of minutes.

“I thought that from day one, this was a great fit for me,” Orton said. “I had a lot of confidence when the trade happened. I was excited about the trade and excited for what I and we could do in this system.”

The “we” he was referring to was his relationship with Head Coach Josh McDaniels. Like Orton, McDaniels had few doubts regarding what his new quarterback was bringing to the table.

“Put on any film of Kyle Orton and you will see a smart football player that has always had a lot of responsibility at the line of scrimmage identifying the defense, getting his team into the right situations,” McDaniels said. “That is what we ask him to do here, and he has done a nice job of it.”

With that confidence in tow, the Broncos are seeing results on the field.

On August 14, Orton had a rocky preseason debut against the 49ers, finishing with three first-half interceptions. Some naysayers were born in the process, questioning him as he worked to learn a complicated offense.

Two months to the day, Orton addressed the media regarding his title as AFC Offensive Player of the Week. His 330 passing yards and two touchdowns against the Patriots yielded the first such honor of his career.

Orton called the award “the topping” to a special win, adding that the most gratifying part was seeing his productivity off the field emerge on the field.

“Just the excitement that we had after the win and all the hard work that we put into the week and all the preparation, it was certainly great to get the results that we did,” Orton said.

That preparation has not stopped since his first day in Denver. Traded to the Broncos on Thursday, April 2, Orton said his bond with his new playbook began the following morning and has lasted ever since.

Part of that process was eased along by his teammates, including Brandon Marshall, who were also learning a new offense. Through five games this season, Orton has connected with Marshall for a team-high 24 catches, 283 yards and four touchdowns.

“He’s doing a great job just throwing the ball,” Marshall said of Orton. “Just hats off to Kyle, man, but it all goes to how he prepares himself. He puts in a lot of work.”

Much of the motivation to put in that work has stemmed from McDaniels’ unwavering support. Orton said he’s never had a coach demonstrate such trust in his skills.

The result so far? Five wins in five games, with a continued emphasis on getting better.

“Just looking back, I’m happy that he stuck with me and had confidence in me,” Orton said. “That obviously does a lot for a quarterback.

Here are some more photos from the start of today’s session, including Correll Buckhalter, who was out on the practice field.

you would not be on any list (bad list) that i can think of. and like i said he would need to do it in a way not to start us, as fans, to srart disliking each other. after the super bowl win would be a good time
another thing he would have to do is find the name changers. like one was cutler something, he got on here after the trade and asked how to change his name. :0

  3. florio's_mom says:

Isn’t it funny how this team feels more relaxed and focused with Jay out? The atmosphere here is way better.

  4. eternalorangeandblue says:

  5. eternalorangeandblue says:

  6. texark-fan says:

is it jay out or mac in? or wining?

who cares it is working and working well.

  7. florio's_mom says:

    All of the above!

Shanny was stale. Jay was a baby. Losing sucked.

    Everything is fixed.

  8. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

Good to see Correll back on the field, ready for that 1-2 punch again. It looks like the team liked those throwbacks as much as I did, I hope they wear them more after this year, lovin the crazy socks.

San Diego should be a tough test, always is, can’t wait for the game.

    DOOOOOOOOM!!

  9. texark-fan says:

you know, during the bye week we always say i hope they can fix this or they need to fix that. this year it won’t be that way. what i am trying to say is there is no pressing thing to fix as in years past.

  10. florio's_mom says:

yeah. this is the most complete team i’ve seen in a while. We are playing all aspect of the game very well. Ofcourse there are some dumb mistakes we can fix. but who doesn;t have that?

It’s nice. last year it seemed like every game we felt pressured to score 40 points. This year, im confident im my team, even if we can only put 14-17 points offensively.

    Defense doesn’t win games.

    Offense doen’t win games.

    Special Teams doesn’t win games.

Complete whole team efforts win games.

    We have that now.

    *wins

Excellent points brian. I know some people didnt like the wild horses formation, but hey I did. Be cool if they threw it to Orton because he was wide open everytime, yeah it probably wouldnt get you a first down but it would get you pretty close and Orton could just run out of bounds. Then you can really open up the running lanes if they think Moreno(Buckhalter) will throw. Also you could add Moreno and Buckhalter to the mix really similar to the wild cat. Then depending on the defense, audible out and bring Orton back behind center in a shot gun formation with Buckhalter or Moreno in a receivers slot. Then you could still run the ball or throw it.

  13. brian_schneider says:

There are some that keep questioning our offense and scoring points. If your offense needs to score an excessive amount of points that means one of two things. 1) Your defense is not good 2) You’re just running up the score on the other team..*cough* Raiders/Giants game.
We don’t need to score massive amounts of points because our D is good. That’s what’s nice about playing as a TEAM. If everyone does their job you don’t need to score 40+ points a game.

  14. florio's_mom says:

All i want is one more point than the other team.

  15. Broncfalls says:

    1. Move the chains
    2. Exploit their weak D-Line and Run Defense
    3. Red Zone effectiveness!
    4. Keep Phillip off the field

    * then with #1 & #2 being accomplished, the defense is rested and BRINING IT! every down.

Ultimately this is going to force Phillip to take shots to a secondary that is ready for INT’s

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  16. SBXXXII..Iwzthr! says:

Can’t wait for the game this week. Is it Monday yet??

I just heard some pretty unbelievable stats about the defense…..In the last three games, the Broncos Defense has not allowed a third down conversion, that’s 18 downs they’ve faced. Out of all the games so far, in the second half, they’ve only allowed 2 third down conversions. AMAZING!!!! Can we start calling it the Orange Crush yet or what????

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  17. Shadronlee says:

Yeah it helps Jay cutler isnt throwing interceptions all game

  18. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

Shadronlee – Cutler is probably sitting in his Chicago apartment crying because he realizes he made the biggest mistake of his life. Cry baby could have been an absolute beast in McDaniels system with his ability. Oopsy.

    Do your thing Kyle.

  19. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

    Baby made a poopy…

  20. brian_schneider says:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! You guys crack me up.

  21. brian_schneider says:

I just listened to Rivers’ interview, and he sometimes sounds like an idiot.

  22. BroncoWildKansan says:

Sometimes…. Uh, Uhm, What do you mean by sometimes? Um, he always uh, sounds uhm, like an idiot……..

  23. Shadronlee says:

And old Mr. Shan is sitting there holding the tissues for cutler hoping to god he actually makes something of his career.

  24. Dynamicdave says:

texark-fan, there is only 2 people from this site who bashed the Broncos and the fans, both, which I mentioned in an earlier post. The Post and ESPN and NFL.com is where the majority of the bashers are. Some are media personalities. People are just taking what I’m going to do at the end of the year out of context. The people I will single out are not anybody that I’m trying to ‘turn anybody against.” These are fans who said we were morons, sheep, blind, idiotic, etc., and then ripped the players and team. Not exactly someone I think any of us would be sitting down and having lunch with. Besides, I’m not going to resort to name calling, I’m just going to point out how they were not only wrong, but insulting at the same time. To think about their picks and insults before they speak, nothing more.

  25. Dynamicdave says:

About Torain. I still think he’s a good back, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, he’s injury prone which is hurting his chances of playing in the NFL. If he could stay healthy, he could be a stud. He just can’t seem to do that.
