Seven Broncos on H.O.F Preliminary List

September 19th, 2009 - 5:55pm by Kyle Sonneman

On Saturday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the 131 players, coaches and contributors who make up the preliminary list of modern-era nominees for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010.

Former Broncos’ Steve Atwater, Terrell Davis, Karl Mecklenburg, Michael Dean Perry, Dan Reeves, Shannon Sharpe and Louis Wright are among the names on the list.

From this preliminary list of modern-era nominees, Hall of Fame selectors will choose 25 candidates who will advance as semifinalist nominees. The list of 25 modern-era semifinalists will be announced on November 27.

The 25 modern-era semifinalists list will be reduced by a mail ballot to 15 modern-era finalists that will be announced on January 7.

The final list of nominees that will be considered for election will consist of the 15 modern-era finalists and the two previously announced senior nominees former Detroit Lions cornerback Dick LeBeau and former Denver Broncos running back Floyd Little. LeBeau and Little were selected this past August by the Hall of Fame’s Senior Selection Committee.

The Class of 2010 will be selected from the list of 17 finalists (15 modern-era and two senior nominees). The actual voting will be conducted at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee’s annual meeting, which will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2010 in South Florida the day before Super Bowl XLIV. The election results will be announced immediately afterwards.

While there is no set number for any class of enshrinees, the selection process by-laws provide that between four and seven new members will be selected.

I know typically we don’t get real consideration by the voters, this is an impressive list of Broncos. As Broncos fans we can truly appreciate their bodies of work and what they brought to the organization. This year’s total selection is full of legends here’s hoping the voters finally show us some respect.

Congratulations to all those named and good luck.

Go Broncos…Let’s win this one for Shannon and the others in the Ring.

are broncos will prob get screwed again since Rice and Smith are eligable but I hope a bronco can get in.

Michael Dean Perry???? As a Bronco???? Waste of a nomination.
Dan Reeves: Long overdue. Depends of which other coaches have been nominated.
Floyd Little: A very long shot. Just doesn’t have the numbers. Maybe the 50th anniversary of the founding of the AFL will sway enough votes to get Floyd over the hump.
Karl Mechlenberg: Never going to happen. Doesn’t have anywhere near the numbers of Randy and Randy got shafted.
Louis Wright: Very deserving. A long, long shot.
Shannon Sharpe: The fact that despite having every TE record in existance and didn’t make it on the first ballot shows what a farce the HOF is.
Steve Atwater: Very deserving, but, hopefully, he’ll get in in a few more years. Could make it this years if this years first time nominees are aren’t a strong group.
Terrell Davis: Biggest knock is shortness of his career. Hopefully the two SB rings and 2,000 yard season will offset this. Probably not.

The username says it all for me…. ATWATER!

    but Sharpe definitely
I hate Reeves but hes deserving
Davis and Mechlenberg are slim chances
I dont see Little or Wright ever getting the nod unfortunately

    Michael Dean?! Really?

Other than that, a great group of Broncos (and I’ll even root for M. D. Perry – just not at the expence of anyone else on this list). Jerry Rice is as big a no-brainer as there’s ever been, and Emmitt Smith in all likelihood will also be in. Hopefully, at least one or two of the five remaining possible slots can go towards addressing the shameful lack of Denver Broncos in the HoF.

I’m hopeful that the senior commitee attention will help Floyd Little finally get in – hopefully the fact that he has better numbers than several current Famers will get around.

Shannon damn well BETTER get in this time; held all the TE records til Gonzalez just passed him, basically redefined the position… The only consolation about his first ballot snub is that it seems to very difficult for receivers to make first ballot – Cris Carter’s waited at least two years, and Art Monk had to wait, what, seven??

I was pretty young when Louis Wright was playing, but I remember enough to know that he was great. Couch Reeves is a great coach and certainly deserves to be in (even if he chooses to go as a Falcon or something); Karl was also excellent, though Gradishar and Tom Jackson before him bode poorly. Terrell’s awesome talent and Super Bowl rings are worthy (though Sharpe’s three rings, on top of everything else, still didn’t get him in last year); brevity of career might always keep him out. Personally, I’d send Dennis Smith to the Hall before Atwater, but Steve was also a long-standing, intimidating defensive standout.

Here’s to hoping that as many of these deserving gentlemen will at last receive their Hall of Fame recognition as possible!

U guys dont think davis is good enough!!!! please!!!! thats lame….MVP, 2000 yard season, what 3 other 1500 yard seasons and barry sanders beat him out of alot of the rushing titles. Two superbowls, the main key in the first superbowl providing the balance Elway needed to get his superbowl ring. Nearly a 96.0 yards per game avg for his career, I think only 2 are better. 7-8 100 yard games in the playoffs. His average in the playoffs is over 100 yards per game..#1 spot all time. He on average had better stats then Curtis Martin thru there same points in there career, only a freak injury caused him to not keep those stats being how durable td was prior to the injury, and experts think CM will ge in the HOF for sure!!! TD at his hay day was step for step with Barry Sanders in his hay day!!! only Diff…SUPERBOWLS AND WINS!!! BS sure HOF..so lets get TD in cuz the stats dont lie!!!

  7. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

I think/hope that we get TD and Shannon in the HOF this year… If not!, then I think Shannon will get in, but then TD and Atwater will be in it next year… I think that’s how it should be… and I hope it..

Even though I think Atwater is already over due, I don’t see why they won’t wait another year (even though he should get in this year because he should have been already)

Oh, and by “this year” I just mean this next voting…

  8. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

Yeah Sharpe I think he is a sho in for the HOF. I would really like to see TD get in as well. He is one of only four backs in the history of the NFL to rush for over 2000 yards in a season, plus two superbowls and one MVP.

  9. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Let’s call them the Magnificent 7 and have them all enshrined. GO BRONCOS!!!

  10. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

BradJamesBroncoFan, haha They did say they HAVE to have 4 to 7 haha…

I think I’d pee my pants if that would happen… haha

  11. broncomvp24 says:

Sharp, Davis for sure. Atwater and Mek. I hope. I am too yound to remember seeing Mek or Atwater, but I remember hearing my mom and dad talk about them growing up… My mom pulled her hamstring jumoing so much when Davis helped Elway win the first SB and she will be so excited if TD makes it!

I watched the NFL network HOF special. It doesn’t look good for the Broncos.
Emmit Smith is a no brainer
Jerry Rice is a no brainer
Dick Le Beau should have been in a long time ago. His coaching skills will tip the scales and he’ll finally make it. Sorry Floyd, but the old timers rarely get one in and NEVER two.
Shannon Sharpe should have been in last time ,but he makes it this time.
Chris Cater would have made it last year except, according to the “experts”, “they” didn’t want number 2 all time receiver going in before number 1 all time treceiver.
A Hog will finally make it, either Russ Grimm or Joe Jacoby. Long overdue.
Either Art Modell, Paul Tabligue or Jack Kent Cooke will get in on the administrative side.
That’s seven, the maximum number allowed to be inducted each year.
For a Bronco in addition to Shannon to get in he’ll have to “upset” some very good choices.
Hopefully next year for TD, Atwater, etc.

  14. PhotoHoundAK says:

Atwater, TD, and Sharpe should definitely make it. Will they? Probably not, not the way the “voting” goes…

  15. PhotoHoundAK says:

    oldsouth – great breakdown.
