Series History: Broncos vs. Chiefs

December 29th, 2011 - 9:07am by Stuart Zaas

The Broncos host Kansas City this weekend for the 103rd regular-season meeting between the two divisional rivals.

Denver trails the all-time series 47-55, but is 32-19 against the Chiefs at home. The Broncos won the first meeting between the two clubs this season 17-10 at Kansas City.

The teams have met once in the postseason, with the Broncos coming out with a 14-10 victory in what Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway called his greatest memory from his time playing against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Notable performances against the Chiefs:

  • CB Champ Bailey: In 15 career games against Kansas City, Bailey has intercepted four passes and broken up a total of 14. In addition, he’s forced one fumble and registered a sack in last year’s game at Kansas City on Dec. 5.
  • DE Elvis Dumervil: Has totaled 6.5 sacks in eight career games vs. Kansas City, including one game where he finished with three sacks and one forced fumble against the Chiefs on Dec. 9, 2007.
  • CB Andre’ Goodman: Has intercepted passes in three of his five games against Kansas City. In addition to intercepting a pass, he also returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown at Kansas City on Dec. 6, 2009.
  • DE Jason Hunter: Returned a fumble 75 yards for a touchdown and posted one sack vs. Kansas City on Nov. 14, 2010.
  • LB Mario Haggan: Registered a career-high three sacks and forced the fumble that Hunter returned 75 yards for a touchdown vs. Kansas City on Nov. 14, 2010.
  • Denver-Kansas City Roster Connections
Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Chiefs courtesy of research done by Public Relations Intern Cydney Ricker:

  • Broncos punter Britton Colquitt and Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt are brothers, and are the first brothers to punt in the NFL at the same time since 1941 (George and Wes McAfee).
  • Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal played opposite Kansas City cornerback Brandon Flowers for three seasons at Virginia Tech (2005-07)
  • Chiefs running back Le’Ron McClain shared the backfield in Baltimore with Broncos running back Willis McGahee for four seasons (2007-10). Chiefs tackle Jared Gaither blocked for McGahee during that span.

Moore is turning out to be a big disapointment considering we took him with our top 2nd round pick. Elway said we had to get immediate contributors on all four of our top picks and so far only two out of four is what I see.

We need Dawkins back for this game…..

Hopefully Elway drafts better next year…

Are there in FA safties coming up this year?

Besides Reggie Nelson … I don’t think theres anyone worth our salt … but he may choose to return to bengals. TRB

    4. daddybronc says:

It isn’t that bad TRB! LOL Moore is needing to learn when to give a few yards and make certain as opposed to when to go all out and nail the ball carrier where he stands. He is making the mistake of thinking that ball carriers go down like they did in college. He is getting beat but tough runners. He is getting beat by guys like Tebow. Tebow needs to let Moore inspire him with some offline practice. LOL

    5. daddybronc says:

      ‘by tough runners’

well here we go…its our playoffs..it sounds like the players are saying all the right things, hope it translates to the field..i hope the players are not even thinking about the oakland game..we dont need to get in on someone elses loss. we need to show a strong effort, to show the world we deserve to be in the playoffs.. as usual, the disbelivers are out in force, and i have to be honest, i have my own doubts. we will face a team that has nothing to lose, and everything to gain.im sure they would like nothing better then to spoil our season.its going to take 100% focus teamwide. but i believe we have the leadership from all areas to pull out a win… den-27 kc-17 time to bronco up…good luck guys

      Three Mice

Three mice are sitting at a table in a pretty rough
neighborhood late at night trying to impress each other
      about how tough they are.

The first mouse turns to the second mouse and says, “When I
see a mousetrap, I lie on my back and set it off with my
foot. When the bar comes down, I catch it in my teeth, bench
press it twenty times to work up an appetite, and then make
      off with the cheese.”

The second mouse replies, “Yeah, well, when I see rat
poison, I collect as much as I can, take it home, grind it
up to a powder, and add it to my coffee each morning so I
can get going for the rest of the day.”

The first mouse and the second mouse then turn to the third
      mouse.

The third mouse lets out a long sigh and says to the first
two, “I don’t have time for this. I’ve got a date with the
      cat.”

On another note… I did notice a concerted effort to get the TEs more involved in the passing game last week. How fantastic would that be to see our rookie Julius Thomas plucking some balls out of the air!!
If I could see Jeremiah Johnson and Julius Thomas ball out on the Chiefs, I would be a happy man!!!

Orton is way to stingy with interceptions to expect a pick; but I will take that too. You know this is gonna be Orton throwing to Goodman’s guy all day. Well… get ready Broncos!!!! This is your last game of the year, play like it!!

      Go Denver.

    12. daddybronc says:

007 – disagree that Orton is stingy in the INT category.

I agree that we could use more TE production. Anybody know anything about this new TE that is supposed to have Tebow experience. Is he going to play this week? Seems pre-mature if he does but it shows the mentality of EFX. They recognize the missing TE production and are not yet satisfied with the personnel.

I agree on the JJ and JT comments!

    13. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea maybe old orton was stingy with the INTs … 2011 orton however is a turnover machine.

Getting the TEs more involved would be awesome. Right after half time I believe on that drive we used our TEs alot and get a TD strike to fells I believe … and then we forgot our TEs existed again … very frustrating … It worked cuz they werent expecting it and kept them off balance but no … why use TEs when u can keep throwing Deep bombs. Complete opposite of McDs first year when all we did were short routes and Ds would jsut sit on them and dare us to go deep.

      TRB

    14. daddybronc says:

With as much variety as we are practicing we might as well just tell KC exactly what play we are calling next. And then we call it poor ‘execution’ when they stop us from doing what we want to do. Crazy!!!

    15. baylinorcrush says:

Ask armadillo about Fox game plans on O, LMAO!

    16. baylinorcrush says:

This is like a safety hospital ward:

The Broncos are once again practicing without veteran safety Brian Dawkins.

A neck injury has sidelined Dawkins for most — if not all — of the team’s last three games, and kept him out of practice twice this week. Dawkins has watched practice from the sidelines, in sneakers and without a helmet.

Head coach John Fox last weekend described Dawkins’ injury as a pinched nerve.

All other Denver players are participating in practice, including the two safeties who would play in Dawkins’ place on Sunday against Kansas City if Dawkins’ neck does not improve enough in time for the regular-season finale.

David Bruton, who could start at strong safety, has been limited in practice lately with an Achilles injury, while rookie Quinton Carter, the starter at free safety, missed the second half of last week’s game because of a bruise to his lower back.

    17. daddybronc says:

The secret to winning on Sunday is domination by the Broncos offensive line. They have to open holes for runs. The offensive attack has got to be diverse, unique, creative, and most of all – a little daring!!!

If the defense continues exactly as they have – we will be fine. It was not the defense that has allowed 40 pts. by anybody. (this is not to state that I am satisfied with our defense – it is adequate but injured and aging – that’s all.)

    18. baylinorcrush says:

You don’t have to look any further than what McCoy said just today about why Fox ball is so unimaginative and bland (other than the short adjusting to Tebow period they had this season):

It’s all about execution anyway, McCoy said.

“When I was at Carolina, we were in the same two-minute drill for five years, running the same six plays against the Falcons twice a year and Tampa Bay twice a year,” McCoy said. “We never changed those six plays.

” They always knew the signals, and this and that. And they never stopped us. It comes down to players making plays.”

      No kidding!

      LMAO!

    19. daddybronc says:

Our special teams going both ways needs to step up, as well!! I can’t figure out what has happened to ST. (And that is the arena of football I’ve coached and understand best. Christian HS level)

    20. baylinorcrush says:

Here is something for all the Tebow disciples:

      http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/2011/12/29/tim-tebow-marathon-florida-version-featured-on-cbs-sports-network/11502/

      I’ll pass.

Hey Tebow Gator fans, don’t get to caught up in those reruns, we have a game Sunday, LOL.

    21. baylinorcrush says:

Low altitude and frozen ball is partly what happen on ST in Buffalo. No way it will be as bad as all KOs should be unreturnable out of the end zone.

    22. daddybronc says:

      Not me Bay –

Although it would be nice if McCoy sat and watched those games!! LOL

I can’t believe he said that! (Refering to Bay’s post above)

I still can’t figure why my previous post got moderated. I’ve changed a number of things and it still won’t post.

    23. baylinorcrush says:

      Legwold’s baby:

The collective Broncos media crew today honored Bailey for his professionalism off the field and in the locker room by naming Bailey the 2011 recipient of the Darrent Williams Good Guy Award.

The media votes annually for the player who, “handles the job with some professionalism, win or lose,” said the Denver Post’s Jeff Legwold, who coordinates the award for the Denver chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America.

“Anything with Darrent’s name on it is special to me, because everybody knows what kind of player he was and what type of guy he was, so thanks a lot,” Bailey said.

The PFWA started the award in 2007 as a way to honor Williams, the young Broncos cornerback who was murdered on Jan. 1, 2007 following a New Years Eve party downtown. Previous winners include John Lynch, Ebenezer Ekuban, Elvis Dumervil and Mario Haggan.

Bailey joked to us that it was unexpected, because he didn’t think he was too cooperative this year.

I can speak for the rest of the media crew by saying that certainly was not the case. Bailey was available for interviews after each game, win or lose, and we appreciate his honesty and candor about his own performance as well as that of the team. He spoke to the media scrum — all the television cameras and radio microphones — weekly, and always makes himself available to print reporters, a rarity for a player of his experience and stature.

As the longest-tenured Bronco, Bailey’s voice is a respected one in the locker room, but also in the Broncos community at large.

    24. daddybronc says:

I decided last game that I don’t like Willis as return man. Looked like he ‘parked it’ when tacklers arrive. With the same amount of space, Royal ran around it without slowing. I regret that there was not enough upside to Cosby.

    25. baylinorcrush says:

Did you have anybody’s handle in your post?

    26. daddybronc says:

Good Post Bay – Hola Champ!!!

    27. daddybronc says:

      No links – no handles.

I removed the money signs and references to specific taxes.

I was just joking about your question as to whether we work for the feds and giving my costs for being independent.

    28. baylinorcrush says:

      Too Anti-American then, LOL.

    29. daddybronc says:

How would it catch something like that – they have to have some built in ‘keys’ that it is looking for.

    30. ckbroncs says:

I am new to the forum, live in Green Bay Wisconsin and am a life long Bronco fan. I have listened to Packer fans from when the team sucked to when the beat the Patriots in the SuperBowl and believe me, they are the definition of fair weather fans. When the Broncos beat the Packers it was one of the best days of my life (my wife is puking now). Unfortunately, reading some of these posts reminds me of those Packer fans. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some of the comments sound like they are coming from non-Bronco fans. I don’t understand what is so scary about the chiefs. The have been playing bad football and losing other than the Packer game. I know the Packers were undefeated, but they were in the perfect situation to lose. Other than that, they are a bad football team. Orton is garbage and the Chiefs have lost 9 of 10 in Denver. I thought Denver would lose last week because they were in a perfect situation to lose. This week, I think Denver wins this week by double digits. I will always cheer for the Broncos win or lose, but I want a big win this week and a chance to watch some playoff football with the Broncos in them! GOOOOOOOOOO Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    31. baylinorcrush says:

When I have an important post I need posted and there is a problem I e-mail them and straighten it out, however this one doesn’t look important to me, LOL, so I definitely wouldn’t bother.

    32. daddybronc says:

Right – it would just be nice to understand the criteria so that I don’t violate it.
