Series History: Broncos vs. Bills

December 22nd, 2011 - 9:37am by Stuart Zaas

On Sunday, the Broncos and Bills will meet for the 35th time in the regular season. Buffalo holds an 18-15-1 advantage in those games. The clubs are tied at 11 wins each in games played in Buffalo. Denver has won five of the past six games in the series.

The teams last squared off in Denver, with the Bills coming away with a 30-23 victory on Dec. 21, 2008. The Broncos won the last game that the two teams played in Buffalo by a score of 15-14 on Sept. 9 2007.

Denver and Buffalo have played once in the postseason, with the Bills defeating the Broncos 10-7 in the 1992 AFC Championship game.

Notable performances against the Bills:

  • S Brian Dawkins: Has registered an interception in each of the two games he’s played in against the Bills for his career. He also has one forced fumble and two tackles for a loss to go with 12 tackles.
  • CB Champ Bailey: Posted one sack to go with nine tackles and a forced fumble last time Denver played Buffalo (12/21/08).
  • DE Elvis Dumervil: Intercepted his first and only NFL pass against Buffalo on Sept. 9, 2007.
  • RB Willis McGahee: Topped the 100-yard rushing mark, finishing with 114 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown against the Bills, while playing with Baltimore (10/21/07).
  • Denver-Buffalo Roster Connections
Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Bills courtesy of research done by Public Relations Intern Cydney Ricker:

  • Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow threw to Buffalo wide receiver David Nelson at Florida, where the pair played on two National Championship teams together.
  • Denver linebacker Wesley Woodyard played at Kentucky with Buffalo wide receiver Stevie Johnson.
  • Bills linebacker Andra Davis played for Denver in 2009, and Buffalo Head Coach Chan Gailey coached in Denver during the 1985-90 seasons.
  • Broncos running back Willis McGahee (2003-06) and linebacker Mario Haggan (2003-07) spent time in Buffalo. Denver wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert and running backs coach Eric Studesville coached in Buffalo (2004-07).

All home made and really good, The old time recipes passed down from grandmas and great grandmas. SUPER AWESOME!!!!

    2. seweatherman1 says:

    4. seweatherman1 says:

Cherish these moments SD. I lost my mom three years ago, and I really miss those home made packages every year.

    5. millerqbkiller says:

i think yesterday i started a tell me about your life movement on our blog it was nice to here alot of our friends storys though. good stuff guys

    6. S.D.Bronco30 says:

Good point seweatherman1, leaving it until the last minute! I am happy to say I have all my shopping done, wrapped and under the tree. That is big for me, I am usually the last minute guy as well.

    7. seweatherman1 says:

Yea, I learned that shasz is only about 60 miles east of me. I didn’t realize I had somebody so close.

    8. millerqbkiller says:

sorry to here about your mom seweatherman. you are right though take nothing for granted life is short. god bless you bro

    9. seweatherman1 says:

Being homebound SD all the wife and I do now is shop online. I found that to be the best anyway, If you look you will get some great deals that way, and not near the hassle of dealing with some of the idiots in these stores.

    10. millerqbkiller says:

s.d.bronco was it you i saw yesterday say you were getting married soon?

    11. seweatherman1 says:

Thanks miller. Yep, I miss her and dad a lot at the holidays. It is good though thinking of all the good times we had.

    12. S.D.Bronco30 says:

I absolutely do seweatherman1, I lost my Dad when I was 11 just before Christmas and have missed him terribly since. Then in college I lost one of my closest friends right after Christmas. Also when I was in the hospital earlier this year I thought my number may soon be up. I know all too well that life is very precious and to cherish everyone and all you have because you never know when it will all be gone.

I agree miller, it has been great hearing peoples stories, would love to hear more from others as well, it lets us know each other better and makes us a stronger Bronco community!

    13. millerqbkiller says:

going to my moms tonight to stay through christmas im stoked for the home cooking and festivities

    14. 1980nmbronco says:

Merry Christmas all from New Mexico! Here’s to the hope that we can add a Broncos win to the presents under the tree come Saturday! I can’t wait to see my son open his Tebow jersey, he is 7 and finally outgrew his old 47 Lynch jersey. There is no one in sports I’d rather he model his life after than number 15. (I didn’t comment, but that blog about Tim’s W15H was pretty inspiring.) So you all have a great Christmas and see(read) you after the weekend.

    15. S.D.Bronco30 says:

Sorry missed a couple of posts,

seweatherman1 I love to do most of my shopping online, so easy! and your right, great memories are what you hold on to, makes all the difference in the world!

    16. S.D.Bronco30 says:

Merry Christmas 1980, hope it is a great one!

    17. millerqbkiller says:

nice sd ya i got married last august and it is such a stressfull time preparing for it but when its all over its awsome i took my wife to maui for a week it was so much fun.

    18. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Ill get in on this, some regulars might already know half of this.

Originally from Nigeria. Came here in 97. Its funny, in 1991 I believe it was, my mom came to america for a conference in none other than denver colorado. During the superbowl season when we went. Saw so much blue and orange she was amazed by the level of fandom. So she brought me back some bronco stuff. But I don’t remember because I was 2 at the time. Fast forward to 98/99, in america, my bro is into football, I barely watch, but I watch the superbowl, My bro has taken a liking to the Falcons, so thx to good old sibling rivalry I root for the Broncos. Been a Bronco fan ever since. When my mom found out years later that I was a bronco fan, thats when she told me about 1991 … guess I was a Bronco fan long before I even knew what American Football was. 23yrs old, live in Maryland, grew up a stones throw from redskins stadium and now live 20 mins from ravens stadium, been blogging for at least 5 years. Barely any Bronco fans around here so this site is my solice lol. Yup … Thats about it.

      GO BRONCOS. Later Days, TRB

    19. royalbroncofan1 says:

Love the green chili from our neighboring state to the South… New Mexico!!

      Merry Christmas 1980nmbronco!!

    20. shaztah says:

I too enjoyed hearing everyone’s stories kinda make you realize that there are Bronco fans of all ages, races, sexes and locations. Yes seweatherman we are neighbors. Also, the reason I am moving is because Gainesville is where I stole my husband from. He has not been able to find a job in the small town that is Okeechobee so we are going to give it a shot in Gainesville. I am keeping the home that I own here as a just in case thing.

    21. millerqbkiller says:

my wife is making gingerbread houses with all her daycare kids today they look yummy. im trying not to be the how grinch stole candy off the daughters house.lol

    22. millerqbkiller says:

all i want for christmas is 6 more wins. and to be real greedy maybe a tebow jersey. lol

    23. S.D.Bronco30 says:

Good to learn more about you TRB, yep sounds like you were destind to be a Bronco fan!

miller- it is a bit stressful, but it is coming along very well. We have our church, reception site, photographer, DJ and caterer booked. We are keeping it pretty simple, taco bar for the reception! She has her dress and brides maids dresses as well. So we have a few things left but big stuff pretty much done. We want to go tropical for the honey moon and for a week but have not decided where yet.

    24. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

I suppose since others are sharing this Christmas time, I will too. Was born in Louisiana and moved to South Carolina when I was in high school. Graduated and went to college back in Louisiana (LSU ALL THE WAY!), joined the Air Force in 05 and got stationed in Minot, ND! Why not, Minot? Freezin’s the reason! Got married in 09. I agree with miller, it was a stressful time leading up to it, but afterwards its all gravy. I actually get Christmas with my wife and her family this year. Hopefully no more tours for me!

The question most people ask is: Why the heck are you a Broncos fan from Louisiana? Simple, my dad grew up in Colorado Springs and I grew up with him as a Broncos fan and decided I wanted to be like the old man. I wish he was still here. He died in 09 before I got married. Sure do miss him.

    25. Atwater4HOF says:

We don’t match up great with Buffalo. Another pass heavy offense and our secondary is less than stellar right now. Hopefully bad weather forces this to be a pound it out game in which I think we have the advantage.

Great to see almost everyone listed as probable this week with the exception of Bruton and Dawkins as Questionable but participated in practice.

      **SCORE PREDICTION***

      Denver 20
      Buffalo 16

    26. Atwater4HOF says:

Nice TRB I’m about 25 minutes away from M&T. Definitely a shortage of Broncos fans amongst all the Ravens, Skins, Steelers, Eagles territories.

I was born in Denver and me and my sister decided if we get a home playoff game this year that we are both Denver bound to see our first live Broncos game in Denver.

I saw the Broncos play at Pittsburgh back in I think 96 or 97 in an absolute blizzard. Yancy Thigpen tore up our secondary and we lost by 7 if I remember correctly.

    27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Long time no see cody, if theres something we all know is u like LSU … we might have missed out on PP but maybe we will get the honey badger or the other dude (I think his name is clairborne) … I hear they are pretty good.

      HOF,

Good thing rodgers throws alot of INTs and we got like the 3rd best past rush in the NFL. Also good thing they are ranked 29 against the run and we are ranked … well 1 lol

      TRB

    28. 1nOnlyTRB says:

HOF another MD resident … for some reason I feel like i knew that already maybe you told me. cool stuff!

      TRB

    29. Atwater4HOF says:

Very true, as long as McGahee is healthy we should control the game. He seems to have trouble staying healthy for 4 quarters of late. I’d love for our secondary to come up with some INT’s we’ve definitely struggled in that department the past few years.

Yes not many Broncos fans in MD that’s for sure. Unfortunate that the Broncos are televised only when they play the Skins, Ravens, or Steelers.

    30. BeastFromEast92 says:

      *score prediction*

      Broncos 23
      Bills 17

We should be able to run the rock down their throats, just worried about our secondary, hope Dawk plays!

    31. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

Claiborne and The Honey Badger are both great CBs. Matheiu can even play safety. They both have great awareness, great hands, great instincts. Matheiu has a knack for finding the ball. He is the type of defender that takes chances, so he will get beat occasionally but he makes up for it with forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, and INTs. Oh and he can return punts too. Claiborne isnt too shabby at returning kickoffs either.

Youtube Tyrann Matheiu Punt Return and watch the 92 yarder against Arkansas and the 62 yarder against Georgia

If you watch the Tyrann Mathieu honey badger video it says alot. He is only a sophomore though. Claiborne is a junior and many believe he will go pro. I am not too sure on that. I think he stays for another year for a second championship!

    32. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

BFE knows about the Honey Badger!

    33. BeastFromEast92 says:

      YEP!

    34. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

If I could pull 3 players for the LSU team this year and make them Broncos it would be:

      Eric Reid – Safety
      Tyrann Mathieu – DB
      Brad Wing – Punter

    35. BeastFromEast92 says:

If Claiborne stays in school I’d like to draft Kirkpatrick from Alabama or Gilmore from South Carolina!

      Both are solid CBs,imo!

    36. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

I guess that depends on whether we draft in the early 20s or early 30s!

If Claiborne goes pro, I think he will be a top 10 pick and I am not sure we can afford to trade up.

    37. WieminCA says:

Last night my wife baked cookies and goodies till there was no more room on the counter … too bad for me – I had to give up sugar … but the aroma was intoxicating … now she passes the stuff out to everyone else … oh, well … also – she’s NOT a football fan – but she sat w/ me for the last half hour of the Pats game – she should have done it for one of the earlier ones, when they came back and won … lots of old memories of games vs. Buffalo … hope we can kick a$% on Saturday … last night I pulled up the temp in Buffalo and it was 43 deg – here (in So Calif) at my place it was 38 deg at the same time … what’s going on here?? … each season takes on a life of it’s own, doesn’t it … injuries, winning streaks and losing streaks … the game is so much mental, in addition to physical, and the ball takes lots of funny bounces, and each game has little ebbs and flows, and turnovers … it’s that uncertainty that we love (when we’re winning) that ANY GIVEN SUNDAY!!!

    38. royalbroncofan1 says:

      Bills – 23
      Broncos – 20

“This makes no sense, other than I believe in Christmas miracles for the city of Buffalo, I feel Ryan Fitzpatrick is better than he’s shown in the last two months … and I’d love to see the Broncos and Chiefs have a brawl to the death in Week 17 for the AFC West’s playoff berth”.

      Source: Peter King SI

Sounds like King is feeling sorry for the Bills. Also letting it be known he’d love to see Kyle Orton vs. Tim Tebow for season ending drama.

King is now resorting to being a “drama queen”…..lol!!

    39. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I prefer clairbornes build to honey badgers but he does play big. Kinda reminds me of brent grimes from the falcons. Risk taker in deed. I did watch the honey badger video.

I hear alot about kirk patrick but for somereason I dont think he is that good. I personallydon’t see it. Like his hieght but he comes across as lanky to me. Never watched him play tho. Mayeb I just got a thing against the Tide. I don’t watch much college football but I prefer LSU lol

      TRB

    40. 1nOnlyTRB says:

There can still be drama at the end of the season between Orton V Tebow … that doesn’t mean it has to be for who goes to the playoffs. I’d rather we lock it up this week and then enjoy the drama with nothing really on the line next week lol. But KC does us good if the win … and if we beat Buff its over. So … KC can win this week but so should we please and then have fun with Orton next week. I mean … who woulda thunk that this is how it would end. That Orton would end up as a chief. Like seriously the way this season is progressing like a movie I wouldn’t be suprised if we lost and chiefs won and it came down to wk 17 … its like someones pulling the strings. And if it does happen (especially if we make it to SB and win) THERE WILL be a movie no question about it lol. TRB

    41. seweatherman1 says:

The one thing that everyone is forgetting about Orton is this. He is the same in KC that he was here. He is good between the 20′s, but in the ‘red zone’ he sucks. They have to resport to field goals. That is one big thing in our favor.

    42. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

Weatherman – I am also looking forward to Cement Shoes picking himself up off the ground repeatedly because you know DJ Von Doom and co. will be HUNGRY!

    43. royalbroncofan1 says:

I hear you TRB… rather see it get done this weekend.

    44. seweatherman1 says:

Oh my DJ Von DOOM & Co. are going to give him a New Year gift he will never forget! They are going to make him wish he stayed out with his little hurt finger.

    45. WieminCA says:

Orton does get a red-zone “bad rap” … even against GB, he made a couple of long pass plays that took them down to the 1 or 2, then the play-calling got very conservative, and they settled fort FGs … not totally his fault … but – the one thing Tebow does have is the innate ability to pick the right hole when HE runs … not many other QBs have that … it definitely is a drawback for Orton – but the play calling should emphasize HIS attributes, like play-action dumpoffs …

    46. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Forget QBs … not many RBs have that. Tebow TD run (I believe the first one) agaisnt the pats last week was one of th ebest runs ive ever seen … especially from the QB position. Spun him off and just found the hole. Great run indeed. Precisely why many of us wanted him to start. He is a redzone gift from the football gods lol.

      TRB

    47. daddybronc says:

Has anybody seen a weather report for Buffalo for Sat.? Weatherman?

    48. BeastFromEast92 says:

TRB…I like LSU better than Bama too,but you gotta go with the talent dude, not where he comes from, lol.

      Claiborne 6th
      Kirkpatrick Alabama 8th
      Janoris Jenkins North Carolina 17th

    49. royalbroncofan1 says:

When Zane Beadles pulls from the Guard position and leads the way…. it’s money!!

    50. BeastFromEast92 says:

      Alfonso Dennard Nebraska 23rd
