Over the past few weeks, the Denver Broncos have made their intentions clear: they are going to run the football. A lot.
So while Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan may be known for his multiple personnel groupings and aggressive blitzes geared towards rattling quarterbacks, he knows it won’t matter if his team can’t limit the Denver rushing attack Thursday night.
“This week is going to be about stopping the run,” Ryan said in a conference call earlier today. “I think that’s going to be the main priority. Obviously, going against Denver their priority is to run the football, and you have to be able to stop it.
“You don’t have to worry about playing pass defense or rushing the passer because they won’t throw it. I think that’s the number one challenge this week.”
Last week in Kansas City the Broncos ran the ball 55 times for 244 yards and quarterback Tim Tebow attempted only eight passes en route to a 17-10 victory.
Some call it “winning ugly”. Ryan isn’t one of them.
“Nobody cares,” he said. “You don’t have to apologize for winning.”
In fact, Ryan appreciated the Broncos run-heavy style.
“I think this past game was really interesting,” Ryan said. “(Tim Tebow) only put the ball up in the air eight times, but that’s really all they needed to. They were able to move the football really effectively on the ground.
“The 55 rushing attempts I think any football fan, true football fan, appreciates that kind of style of play.”
Head Coach John Fox said Monday he would like to develop more balance offensively, but there was no need to steer away from the run game vs. the Chiefs.
And when Tebow needed a crucial third-down completion he hit wide receiver Eric Decker, a player Ryan called “underrated,” in stride for a 56-yard score.
“He only completed two balls, but one of them was right on the money for a touchdown,” Ryan said. “A difference in that game.”
Overall, Ryan said he’s been impressed with what Tebow has brought to the Denver offense.
“It might not be as pretty as some of these other guys standing back there, but he gives you so much more,” Ryan said of Tebow. “He’s a guy that can run; he’s a guy that improvises, and you have to stay on your coverage.”

Take a realistic look at our offense and the NFL and tell me you can’t succeed pounding the rock and be champions. The NFL is built to pass the ball , that is a great advantage to a team with an exceptional power running game. Defenses are built to stop the pass, not the run. Many top flight running backs aren’t even selected in the first round anymore. I like this going against conventional thinking stuff, teams aren’t built to stop the run anymore. The question is , are the Broncos built well enough to be the premier running team in the NFL? If it ain’t , I don’t think it will take much to get there. The O-line gets better every week, we need another beast in the backfield with Willis, We definately got a system. Reminds me of the good days with Shanny, just plug in an RB if someone goes down and watch him run for 100+. Running the rock is exciting football and puts fear in the hearts of opposing defenses. Can’t wait till Thursday, I don’t think the Jets have an answer for our running attack or our pass rush! Go Broncos!
I saw “crybaby” in Bearsville overthrow a receiver by 30 feet this week, and I’m thinking….LOL
I don’t think I’ve enjoyed watching the Broncos since Elway retired with the exceptions of a few of Plummer’s games – I think I am way too emotionally involved. I tend to enjoy other games where I have no emotional investment.
And then…all the sudden I am having more fun with football than I have in years!!!
Just preparing myself to help you Bronco faithfuls to survive the remaining bumps the Broncos must surmount.
Tebow has 7 games under his belt….7…last I checked thats not even half a season yet, he is still basically a rookie with no offseason practice, I dont think anyone really thought he would bring us to the playoffs his first full season let alone a half season, Cutler didnt even do that…orton hasnt done it in 2 plus seasons…most of us just wanna give the kid a chance and see if he can develope into our future…Orton evidently cant.
ok… i just need to say that all the folks on here who are talking about playoffs, and even SB (LMAO!!!!!!) are just delusional. Are we a better team than we have been? ABSOLUTELY!! Are we a threat to go deep into the playoffs? HARDLY!! There are teams out there who actually CAN stop the run! my guess is if we make the playoffs we will quickly be eliminated. But hey… thats a start!!
Go Broncos
What’s up with this stuff about Tebow being on a better team? Last I check he is playing with the exact same roster Orton had.
And as to the idea that our record would be the same if Orton were never benched. LOL
That is obtuse for a whole bunch of reasons, but you need look no further than the chargers game to see how ridiculous that is. Compare the first half of that game (with Orton starting) to the second half (with Tebow running the O). You will see the difference a Tebow makes.
Ray – I don’t think too many are expressing much more than optimism and wishful thinking. Until we get through a few of these AFC East games – frankly – we don’t have a clue as to what we have yet.
Right now the Broncos are reinventing themselves every week – I pity those who fail to enjoy the process.
I think more play action passes on third and longs. This running on 3rd and 7′s every time isn’t gonna work. Gotta take more shots here and there, this guy can throw the ball for chris sakes they act like he has no arms.
On the other hand, sizzla – everyone passes on third and long – how much more fun is this to do something different!!!
Well played my friend. Well played.
Believe me, being way up in Wyoming, there are some times when I have had to deal with a lot of abuse (being such a staunch Denver fan). Tebow has really given me some upmanship with these last two wins. I predicted the general play of those games to some friends (who are not bronco fans and definitely not Tebow fans). I was certain that Denver would surprise the football world against the Raiders and Chiefs.
I have also struggled a bit with this forum, and I am thankful that no one has whacked me for my mistakes as a contributor. I jumped on this site recently because, as Bayless said, “you have never seen a quarterback like Tebow”. I have played the game just a little and watched it very carefully, and fully agree with Bayless.
I’ll take the Bronco’s by barely three. The best thing about Denver and the Broncs this season is that they get better every game. It wouldn’t surprise me if all of a sudden Denver opened up with some screen passes and crossing patterns just at the right time. It just didn’t make sense to make that step against Raiders or Chiefs, but our team has shown an ability to make just enough change, at the right time, to get the job done. I realize we are big underdogs, but that is part of what makes me such a loyal Denver fan.
Loving Tebow Time
9-7 and I don’t care what anybody sez, The Broncos right now are getting better in every faze of the game, offense, defense, special teams and it seems almost magical that number 87 is terrorizing safeties again….shades of Eddie Mac…Ayres, Elvis, Von, DJ,Mays, Marcus,Goodman,Champ,Carter, and Weapon X Is it me or does this at least sound like a legendary D? I’ve seen flashes of greatness last year and this year and I for one believe….yes I have been hitting the cool aid but so what! Go Broncos ground and pound the J E T S…9-7 9-7 9-7 wins the west!!!
Oh and not to forget Woodyard, oh yeah you know the man cane lay some wood on ya! GO BRONCOS!! ORANGE AND BLUE TO BEAT ON YOU!!!
The Broncos will have to play their best and not turn the ball over in order to win. Go Broncos! Make some noise at the stadium, Bronco fans!
