Russell Elected to CU Hall of Fame

July 12th, 2012 - 3:20pm by Gray Caldwell

Director of Player Personnel Matt Russell, a former first-team All-American and Butkus Award winner, has been elected to the University of Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame.

Thursday’s announcement makes Russell one of five Broncos who have been elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame of their respective alma maters, joining Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway (Stanford, 2002), Southwest Area Scout Cornell Green (Utah State, 1993), Director of Community Outreach Billy Thompson (Maryland State, 1984) and Pro Scout Dave Ziegler (John Carroll, 2010).

Russell, who is in his fourth season with the Broncos, was a four-year starter at Colorado (1993-96), finishing his collegiate career ranked first in school history in unassisted tackles (282) and second in total tackles (446). He received all-conference honors during each of his final two seasons with the Buffaloes, including a senior campaign in which he was a consensus first-team All-American and received the Butkus Award after posting a career-high 137 tackles.

The induction ceremony will take place on November 15.

Thanks for the link Tide! Nice to see you chiming in every once and a while…….hope things are well. The blog will be picking up very soon once training camp officially opens!

Tide, I’m with you. We’ve had a lot of changes since 2000 so it’s kind of bogus to put that number out there like we’re a bunch of criminals. Sheesh. We had been doin okay until Sunday!

Scalp! That’s awesome! I’m trying to get tickets to the Texans game… I want to see Rod Smiths induction to the Ring of Fame.

Dez like assaulted his mother or something? That’s crazy!!

  3. Tide Bronco says:

Just for clarification….I’m talking about the violence, fighting, and confrontation over things. Some of these guys grow up with it in their homes and neighborhoods. The other day I was in Walmart, and there was a mother with four small children in the checkout line. She was cursing those little ones like nobody’s business, and slapping them around, making them scream and cry, because they were asking for a candy bars, etc., in the rack by the register. I shuddered to think what happened in their home, away from the stares of other shoppers. Even my 7 year old granddaughter, who was with me, was shocked. I said to her (my granddaughter), in a voice loud enough for the woman with the children to hear….”Aren’t you glad you don’t have a mean mother like that who slaps you and curses you, when you ask for something?” And she said yes, she was very glad she didn’t. But those kids have probably heard it all their lives and maybe don’t realize that other mothers aren’t like that, who knows?

My point is, I rarely ever go to Wal-mart and not see a mother behaving in the same manner to small children, and even babies. And yes, I’ve sometimes said things to the mothers, and even had to get someone to call security when one was slapping a toddler around, but after they get home, that’s the most bothersome part to me.

Off my soapbox now, but when children are not taught manners, or how to be polite without knocking someone’s head off and cursing them out, the only thing they know is aggression and violence. Even among NFL football players, there is a huge difference in those with a “good” upbringing and a bad” one.

Tide, That list is completely different then mine OUCH! the other list didnt show have that stuff and players, they should of never posted that list and article at all. But your rt, these guys are never going to quit getting in trouble your rt.

  5. Tide Bronco says:

No problem, Miller. It’s the highlighted link by the Broncos, called “the list.” That’s the link I posted, after I clicked on it.

  6. Tide Bronco says:

Thanks, KK. I always read and stay caught up, but there hasn’t been much I’ve wanted to comment on lately. Maybe when TC starts, you guys will have to put up with me a little bit more.

  7. millertime2 says:

Tide, with ya on the Wal-Mart thing, heck not only Walmart, But, just about anywhere you go its that way anymore. Its just the manners thing, these kids have none at all. And the way that they yell at each other is crazy, Theirs not a day that goes by that I dont tell my Wife, Kids and Mother that I love them hence we all live fairely close and talk on a daily basis. I dont think some of these kids, get the same love that most of us had.

  8. killerkod says:

Well Tide………..hopefully you’ll comment on OC/killerkod Country Music Masterpiece! hahaha

Hoping to finish it off tonight or tomorrow evening and have it posted this week! LOL

  9. killerkod says:

It all starts from home……….and it’s very cyclical. How people were raised affects how they raise their kids and so on…………which is sad but true. Hard to know anything else when that’s all you’ve grown up with.

I thank my lucky stars I had the upbringing I’ve had and I’ll be sure to pass the same type of upbringing to my daughter………..

  10. Tide Bronco says:

KK, I LOVED your rap song about “The Neck!” And yes, I did comment on it, but I’m not sure you saw it. I was one of the first ones to do so, if I remember correctly.

If your country song is half as good, it will be amazing! I’m not what you would call a fan of either genre, but you really came through big time with OC’s lyrics. Maybe Turtle will chime in when you post his lyrics to your country melody. Really looking forward to it!

And yes, you are so right…it does all start at home, but here in Alabama, we have way too many children having babies just to get the welfare checks. It’s very sad, and frustrating at the same time. My daughter taught middle school here for several years before finally getting back to elementary school, and it was startling the number of 12, 13, 14 year olds that were pregnant during the school year, some even by their own family members. I’m not a racist person at all, but it’s a fact of life down here, and very sad.

  11. killerkod says:

Oh yes, I saw your comment from before…………I just meant I hope it gives you a reason to make another post in this sloooooooooooooooooow time of year before TC!

wow, babies having babies…………so, so sad.

  12. tlcat06 says:

Kod and Tide… I agree about the Walmart thing. Honestly, teaching has changed in the short seven years that I’ve taught and kids are very different from when I grew up and I’m only 29. I think everyone should have to take a parenting course when they find out they’re pregnant… I think a lot of young girls and boys have no idea how to be a mom or dad. It’s actually quite sad when you think about it. Everyone just wants to give the kids contraception and let them go at it and I don’t think that’s the answer. I think kids need to be educated about how parenting is a life long thing, not a way to get welfare money.

  13. tlcat06 says:

Kod, when is your song gonna be ready? Tomorrow? As a one week til TC thing?

  14. tlcat06 says:

Matt Williamson is my favorite person right now. Read that laaaast sentence:

I’m hoping tomorrow cat……….If my daughter will allow me the time to finish it, I’ll get it done! It’ll be this week FOR SURE!

oops my bad Cat!! it was you who posted that article… :D

  18. budlightbronco says:

tlc, hope you enjoyed your trip to Tennessee,it’s a great place!

Am I the only one that didn’t know that Dez Bryant was arrested for grabbing his MOTHER by the hair on her head and ripping her shirt and slapping her in the face with his hat….man he is a PUNK,and I hope he goes to jail,NFL Network reports he could get as much as a year in jail,I HOPE HE GETS THE MAX…HE IS A PIECE OF TRASH!!!!!!!

  19. budlightbronco says:

Looking forward to hearing your new song kod!

  20. Tide Bronco says:

Yes, Dez is a punk. Always has been, probably always will be, BUT, his mother is a crack user/dealer, and has been in and out of jail on more than one occasion, and his father was a pimp. No wonder he’s messed up. There’s no telling what kind of “mother” she was to him, or even is now. Doesn’t make it right that he attacked her, but you reap what you sow. She raised him, and obviously, not very well. It all goes back to what we were discussing this morning. Sad.

So no DOOM are D will drop like it did the last time he missed the whole season. I cannot understand how stupid these players are.

  25. tlcat06 says:

I am in Denver, which means 1. I am almost home and 2. I am surrounded by Peyton Manning apparel, yes, even in the airport! LOL YAY!

So, I wore my Manning shirt home today, mostly because I hate to fly and it immediately makes me feel safe. Stupid, I know, but it’s the honest truth. So in TN the united airlines attendant notices and comments on it and then I get to Chicago and an airline employee shouts out “Hey I love your Manning shirt” as he drives by… It’s awesome. Not going to lie. I wear Broncos shirts almost on a daily basis when I am not working and I have never had so many comments. There’s a lot of love for this guy out there! LOL

    We Got Peyton!
    Tap your cleats three times!
    This ain’t no dream!

  26. tlcat06 says:

What Dez did was awful. And I don’t think he will be ale to get out of legal trouble like it seems Dumervil will.

  27. killerkod says:

    Morning Everyone!

The little rugrat was not overly cooperative last night…………..combined with housework, I didn’t get much of a chance to finish the song……………aiming for tonight to get it done and will post it tomorrow, which will be fitting as training camp will officially be only 1 week away! A little treat heading into the final week of Broncos off-season!

Interesting article in the DP about Doom. Different witnesses story and potential finger printing on the guns……..seems like there’s a few loopholes that a high priced lawyer like Steinberg can use to get the charges dropped.

But regardless of the outcome of the legal stuff, I’m pretty sure he’ll be suspended. I’d much rather a suspension than to see him go to jail for a few years………..

cat…………….you could probably write a book telling stories of interactions cause of your Broncos gear……..lol Love it!

  28. killerkod says:

and that billboard about Doom’s guns is hilarious!

  29. tlcat06 says:

    ;-( about this http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_21098052/terms-block-clady-deal

Laughing @ the billboard! I hope those guys keep it up all season lonG! Too funny!!!

  30. tlcat06 says:

Kod, my mom thinks I wear it to get attention and I said “how is that possible? I always wear Bronco stuff and no one ever says ANYTHING!” but still, everyone thinks you’re from Denver if you’re wearing that stuff, which makes no sense. I’ve never asked a Packer fan if their from Wisconsin. LOL

  31. tlcat06 says:

The more I think about it the more I think this strategy with Clady is a good decision by the Broncos. He obviously wants more money than we think he’s worth right now, so he can prove to us this season he’s worth it and then we can get a deal done before he’s a free agent. Or tag him like we did Prater and get a deal done that way. We’ll see how it plays out I guess…

  32. killerkod says:

I know one thing………..we can’t let Clady walk. His position is invaluable and pretty much the second most important position on the field as he protects the most important position. Let’s hope that they still might get a deal done. And if not, he’ll def be franchised next year and I’m sure they’ll work out a longterm deal then. We need to keep him in a Broncos uniform as long as we can.

Football is such a non-existant sport here in my small town that people don’t even know what team is on the hat I wear all the time.

  33. tlcat06 says:

Kod, that’s crazy. Unimaginable to me that people wouldn’t know what team you’re sporting… Now when I wear my 1960s gear some people confuse it for the Wyoming Cowboys be because of the colors and design, but that’s about it.

I agree with you! We have to keep him. I’m hoping they can get something figured out by next week!!! But if not, you have to think they’ll get it figured out… They did with Champ.

  34. killerkod says:

Whenever I see someone sporting Broncos gear, no matter where I am in the province, I have to talk to them cause it’s such a rare occurance. It’s happened three times in the last 25 years. lol But it was a great feeling knowing there are others out there on my island!

  35. killerkod says:

Just to put in in perspective, my province only has 483,000 people, with 200,000 of those living in our capital city. We’re fairly big geographically but pretty spread out and not big population wise.

  36. raidrhadr says:

kk I went through that while I was in the military. Seeing all the other teams fans all the time. raiders, Pats Cowboys etc…So happy I am back home now where our fans are everywhere.

  37. raidrhadr says:

Keep it strong wherever you are. Broncos Country is going to reach farther this year again since we have PFM.

  38. budlightbronco says:

R8R H8R,Glad to hear from you again, and glad to have you back my friend…(B.F.E.).
