Russell Elected to CU Hall of Fame

July 12th, 2012 - 3:20pm by Gray Caldwell

Director of Player Personnel Matt Russell, a former first-team All-American and Butkus Award winner, has been elected to the University of Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame.

Thursday’s announcement makes Russell one of five Broncos who have been elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame of their respective alma maters, joining Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway (Stanford, 2002), Southwest Area Scout Cornell Green (Utah State, 1993), Director of Community Outreach Billy Thompson (Maryland State, 1984) and Pro Scout Dave Ziegler (John Carroll, 2010).

Russell, who is in his fourth season with the Broncos, was a four-year starter at Colorado (1993-96), finishing his collegiate career ranked first in school history in unassisted tackles (282) and second in total tackles (446). He received all-conference honors during each of his final two seasons with the Buffaloes, including a senior campaign in which he was a consensus first-team All-American and received the Butkus Award after posting a career-high 137 tackles.

The induction ceremony will take place on November 15.

Alot of fans must of cut off Dish and Direct TV, and said NO THANKS the last few years. Serves them right.

  11. budlightbronco says:

Doom is one of my favorite players on Defense (next to Champ) I love the guy,but he made a dumb mistake, seems like everytime we turn around it’s happening to a Bronco player, that sucks!!!!!!!!!

  12. strandoftds82 says:

They gotta learn to walk away and move on when something like that happens. Easier said than done I guess.

  13. budlightbronco says:

I think Directv is the only one that carries the Ticket now,Dish done ditched them, but yeah serves them right!

  14. budlightbronco says:

Yeah it’s awful hard to back down sometimes,I get road rage sometimes too,way too many dummies driving on the road, imo.

  16. strandoftds82 says:

I`ve come to the realization that everyday I`m gonna get cut off or tailgated, or whatever. Its expected. If you expect its going to happen at some point, its easier to let it go. Alot of selfish drivers out there.

  26. tlcat06 says:

Bud and Strand, I need an apology from him. Something fierce, even though I know it probably won’t happen. I know we all make mistakes, but come on man. It was ten days til camp.

    You enjoying your vacation Ticat06?

  31. horsepower1 says:

Hey cat ant Strand: What a crazy couple of days I feel better now that i vented though. I can’t believe that Dum allowed this to happen could have been avoided in my opinion.

  32. horsepower1 says:

Everyone makes mistakes and especially at that age so, he has one more professional chance before i write him off. I think he will come back strong after this situation.

  33. tlcat06 says:

I’m with strand! He’s old enough to know better.

Loving it. Don’t want to go home! But I have to. Worst flight ever getting here though. Plane took off in 68 mph winds when we left Casper and it was like a twenty minute roller coaster ride, guy next to me got me talking about football and I made it through, but I thought I was going to die almost screamed on the plane and everything. Not looking forward to flying tomorrow. ;-(

  34. horsepower1 says:

I pray for better days ahead…Goodnight Bronco Country!!!!

  35. horsepower1 says:

Have a safe trip home cat…talk with you later.

  36. killerkod says:

    Good Morning Gang!

I read an article in the DP this morning that states we’re the 3rd highest arrested team in the league since 2000, behind the Vikings and the Bengals………..WOW!

I didn’t realize we had such a horrible track record with players getting into trouble. Not something to be proud of to say the least.

I would really like to hear from Doom himself………….but I guess that won’t happen until the investigation is complete. I’m sure his lawyer has instructed him to just keep his mouth shut for the time being. But I think we as fans totally deserve an explanation of his actions.

I have a feeling Goodell will drop the hammer on doom, and I’m afraid of how many games he’ll decide on………..Could be as much as 5, but I’m hoping it’s 3, reduced to 2. If we’re lucky, it’ll only be 1 game, but if goodell’s track record stands pat……….he’ll def set some sort of example.

This is really NOT what we needed the week before training camp…………and you know the media will try hard to make it a distraction throughout. Hopefully they’ll be able to put it behind them.

  37. tlcat06 says:

Can I just say that I couldn’t be more happy that Dez Bryant and Marshawn Lynch got arrested too? LOL pathetic I know, but seriously, 8 days til camp and these people are being just so stupid. Take the focus off Dumervil!

Kod, that number is a little off because some of those guys aren’t Broncos anymore or weren’t Broncos anymore when they got arrested.

  38. tlcat06 says:

Kod, 2 or 3 games would be better than the 6 or 8 I was thinking initially, but now that it’s not as bad as I thought, even though it’s bad, I think you’re right. Well know more after August 13th.

  39. killerkod says:

ahhhhhhhhh, okay, thanks for that clarification. It doesn’t state that an lets a reader assume that the players were on the roster when arrested.

Seems as though we hear more about NFL players being arrested than any other professional sport. What is up with that? What boggles my mind is the amount of DUI charges there are with NFL players…………when they can easily afford a cab or a limo or a driver at least.

  40. killerkod says:

I’d say Dez and Lynch will be suspended as well………….as they are both repeat offenders. Had to be disheartening to fans of those teams as well.

  41. millertime2 says:

Ive lost alot of respect for Dume, howhttp://projects.washingtonpost.com/nfl/crimewatch/ can someone be soooo stupid is beyond me, but were not the only team, you hear about Dez every off season.

  42. horsepower1 says:

Kod, I think football players must have too much time on their hands. The teams that do not make the playoffs have about 6 months before their surrounded by football again.

Theirs nothing wrong with going out with your buddies and having a few beers or maybe going out on a date with a lovely young lady. But these three things seem to have trouble written all over it when it comes to professional athletes. I guess you could say that alcohol with too much money, going to the club with your buddies and girls falling at your feet would be trouble for anyone. lol

  43. millertime2 says:

According to the list that I posted, our, worst yr was 07. Dont know where that other Article got its numbers from. Compare the charges with other teams, Stupid in my mind.

  44. millertime2 says:

I dont know, where, these guys get their figures. But I counted from the list that I put up their, it only goes back six yrs but we only had 8 arrest, dont get me wrong im not trying to sugar coat it, but dont make it seem like this team is just completely out of control. That would mean from 2000 to 2006 we had 26 arrest, to me that sounds like alittle exageration.

  45. millertime2 says:

Cat im with you thou, Dume, should of already been, in the public eye making his apology, he owes all of his Bronco Fans that much, if not get rid of him.

  46. ScalptheChiefs says:

HOLY **** guys I jus finished booking my trip to DENVER!!! WOOOO second time ill be making it out there, im going to see my avs oct 27th then the 28th broncos vs saints!! Can not wait, super pumped I hope to see some of you guys there!

  47. ScalptheChiefs says:

I have never watched a primetime football game live before!! holy pumped lol

  48. killerkod says:

I officially hate you right now Scalp! LMAO

JK bud………………that’s great news and while I don’t hate you, I’m EXTREMELY envious! Thought a trip would be in the cards this year but our little girl has sucked us dry of any fun funds! lol But I’ll be certain to make it happen next year. Should be a good ole fashioned shoot-out with Breese and THE NECK!

  49. Tide Bronco says:

Hey Miller, I’m not sure where the confusion comes in, but the article plainly states that it is an “unofficial list” maintained by the San Diego Union-Tribune. However, the list of Broncos players under “The List” goes all the way back to 2000, and plainly lists 35 players that were CURRENT Broncos AT THE TIME of the their arrest. See the link taken from the DP article below:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnuBuPSvtMSGdHBybU9zNE9OTHhoNWVmbHIydFktQWc#gid=0

Seriously though, does any of this “third worst on the list” stuff really matter? Things have changed. Coaches and players have moved on. Nothing is the same as it was in 2000, 2007, or even LAST year. Buncha bunk about nothing, if you ask me. Some of these guys are going to continue to get in trouble from now until the end of time, and besides bellyaching about it, there’s not much any of us can do to change it. It’s just the environment a lot of these guys grew up in, and it’s the only way they know to handle things.
