Russell Elected to CU Hall of Fame

July 12th, 2012 - 3:20pm by Gray Caldwell

Director of Player Personnel Matt Russell, a former first-team All-American and Butkus Award winner, has been elected to the University of Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame.

Thursday’s announcement makes Russell one of five Broncos who have been elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame of their respective alma maters, joining Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway (Stanford, 2002), Southwest Area Scout Cornell Green (Utah State, 1993), Director of Community Outreach Billy Thompson (Maryland State, 1984) and Pro Scout Dave Ziegler (John Carroll, 2010).

Russell, who is in his fourth season with the Broncos, was a four-year starter at Colorado (1993-96), finishing his collegiate career ranked first in school history in unassisted tackles (282) and second in total tackles (446). He received all-conference honors during each of his final two seasons with the Buffaloes, including a senior campaign in which he was a consensus first-team All-American and received the Butkus Award after posting a career-high 137 tackles.

The induction ceremony will take place on November 15.

What a freaking idiot…………regardless of what happened. Horn honking and cursing is one thing…………but they obviously took it to a completely different level and acted like a bunch of thugs. Doesn’t it go through your mind that actions such as this will most certainly have some serious repercussions? And this isn’t his first incident either, which will end up with some sort of disciplinary action from Goodell. He doesn’t need much to drop the hammer………..

Regardless if the charges are dropped, I think he’ll face a suspension……..probably the 2-3 game variety.

UGH!! So frustrated right now. It truly boggles my mind how these athletes can allow themselves to get in those situations.

  2. killerkod says:

The tattoo thing is not true. I think that was tweeted from a fake account cat…………at least that’s what LJ has said in a prior post.

  3. tlcat06 says:

    Ok, sounds good.

This is weird though. Apparently they found a gun in the other car too, so we’re they charged wi aggravated assault too?

  4. horsepower1 says:

Kod: I’m with you!! I am totally disgusted with this right now!! What do you think the last words from the organization and leaving the Bronco facility were??? Enjoy your time off and stay out of trouble!!!!! Why do these guys think they have to get involved even if someone throws something at your car. Who do you think loses in these situations??? I thought Dum-ervile would have learned from the first mistake. I have totally lost respect for this guy right now and he will have to do alot to repair the reputation of being a thud right now. These guys make way too much money to be stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. tlcat06 says:

Ok, never mind! I just keep getti more confused by the moment. Two guns, one in Dooms and one in his friends, but of course rumors that there was one in the other one too. So, I am absolutely confused and am going to stop trying to figure it out. This is so stupid! LOL

  6. tlcat06 says:

THIS is way more clear: http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=8170240

But I still don’t know what’s true, because nfl network says something different. So does the post.

  7. tlcat06 says:

Take that back, post says same thing as espn now and so does nfl network. Why lie to the police?

At least I like the Bears too… At least there is SOME good news today! Sheesh.

  8. OrangeTsunami says:

It doesn’t look good, anyway you slice it.. Hopefully Harvey Steinberg can work some magic here…

  9. killerkod says:

Yup, great news for bears fans today……….they really need Forte out there if they want to compete for the division championship.

Hey OT………..you’re right, it doesn’t look good at all. And as for the lawyers statement that Doom’s charges will be dropped……….that’s just media fodder……..and prob what a defendant’s lawyer is supposed to say anyways………lol

I’m pretty certain elway and bowlen are super PO’ed right now………and you can add me to that list!

  10. tlcat06 says:

Pick me… I’m on that list and so is Peyton Manning and the whole dang offense!

  11. S.D.Bronco30 says:

I hope Champ has texted or called him by now saying “are you freaking stupid man”? This is just plain stupid behavior. I love doom as a player but this is as dumb as it gets. Grow up!! Keep your noses clean. Most of society can manage to do it so it is not that hard.

  12. killerkod says:

I’d say Champ called him and said, “YOU ARE FREAKING STUPID MAN!”

  13. tlcat06 says:

What about Von? he better have said something too. ;-(

  14. killerkod says:

I’m sure every player in the organization feels like saying something………….and every fan too.

  15. S.D.Bronco30 says:

That’s probably more accurate kod. That’s what I would tell him.

  16. DenverOrange says:

Well I read that Doom’s lawyer thanks all charges against Doom will be dropped so fingers crossed :(

  17. horsepower1 says:

Here is the police report. No charges have been filed as of yet and one thing i think we can count on is that Dum-ervil will be suspended for unknown amount of games. Time to move on Bronco Country!!! Who will step up to fill the shoes???

    Go BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Wolfevonn??????

  18. Orange_Crusher says:

I had no idea that if you just show someone your gun that it is considered “aggravated assault with a deadly weapon”?

If this is the case then I think the Police, Sheriffs and the Hypo’s are aggravatingly assaulting people every time they step out in public….lol

I mean really, what if a cowboy with a rifle in his window mount flips you off in traffic, is that aggravated assault?

It sounds to me like the guy in the Impala jump out of his car and threw something at Dooms car and was the aggressor so Elvis just showed the guy his gun to let him know to back off and end the confrontation, and it worked!

It’s highly likely that showing the guy the gun actually averted a physical conflict. Police use that tactic all the time…. jomho

  19. Orange_Crusher says:

    Well, I found this in Florida assult Laws;

Assault is defined as “an intentional threat by word, or act that seeks to physically harm another, coupled with an apparent ability to do so, which creates a well-founded fear in such other person that such violence is imminent.”

An Aggravated Assault is “is an assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

    On the other hand I also found this;

An assault may be categorized as aggravated if you threw an object, even if you didn’t come close to or intent to hit the other person.

Wich I think means that Ramirez (The Impala driver) could also be held to the same aggravated assault charge because he got out of his car and threw something at Elvis car.

  20. ScalptheChiefs says:

WOW this story is more ridiculous then I intially thought… really Doom? someone cuts you off a honking of the horn is vaild but to get out of your car and threaten a woman with your friend with a gun?? What a tough guy… This jus really irritates me because doom was one of my fav players… from what I understand alcohol was not a factor here and he jus lost it… COME ON MAN!!! your a professional football player… man up and act like one….

  21. ScalptheChiefs says:

Maybe we should have drafted Lumpkin lol

  22. horsepower1 says:

OC: I agree that Elvis may have been the one who was taunted in this situation. I do not know all the facts and i was not there but It seems like the guy may have cut off Elvis and words were exchanged then the couple in front of them threw something at the car. This is how it all started and it the physical aggression could have been taken to another level if both vehicles had guns. It is hard not to react in these kind of situations but if i knew i had a gun in the car and that i am a high profile person. I would have avoided any confrontation and only pulled that gun out if me or my familys lives were being threatened. If you have a loaded gun and you pull it out…you better intend on using it. I just think this could have all been avoided if Elvis takes down the license plate and pursues the situation legally…worse case scenario he files and insurance claim. Bottom line he does not hurt his team or get anyone else with him hurt.

  23. Orange_Crusher says:

Well instead of guns I think everyone should just carry around a pair of boxing gloves in their glove compartment.

Then when there is a road rage conflict you can put on the gloves and duke it out like gentlemen… And gentlewomen..

We could really use more roadside entertainment in this country anyways. Watching people texting and driving like idiots is getting old….

Not to mention that the glove compartment will actually be used for gloves!.. LOL

Maybe they should sell a gangster version of the Range Rover with a small gun safe instead of a glove compartment..

Out here in Wyoming we just get bumper stickers that say “I have a gun”. That way we don’t have to go through all the trouble of getting out of the car and pulling our shirts up….lol

  24. ScalptheChiefs says:

HAHAHA OC i love it!! New for 2013 Range Rover ED edition! With dual gun safes under the back seat!! Ill start saving my pennies for Doom’s new vehicle myself!!

  25. horsepower1 says:

OC: I’m glad you found that in the Florida laws. That explains why Elvis’s lawyer believes the charges will be dropped. Question is how will the Commish handle it.

  26. Orange_Crusher says:

Actually I think the Range Rover “ED” edition would come with a glove box full of viagra…..LOL

  27. horsepower1 says:

Hilarious!! Instead of going to jail the police sell tickets to watch road rage boxing matches coming to a stadium near you!!!

  28. WieminCA says:

This happened in Florida?? … w/ their laws, enough said …

  29. alex4serg says:

Man I am just way more stressed about this than I perhaps should be. But everything was looking up. The stars were all aligned for what was sure to be an awesome season. Doom was a huge part of that, what with the Von Doom action.

Hopefully this is just a hiccup, and even if he does have to miss some games, Hunter played excellently last year at DE when he had to step up for a few games. But man! It kind of seems like the bubble has burst way to soon.

  30. strandoftds82 says:

What a mess! This might take some time to iron out. And if the charges are dropped, Goodell can still suspend Doom. Real smart!

  31. budlightbronco says:

I carry a gun and have had a permit for some time now,and have never ever pulled it on anyone, that is STUPID,the only time I will ever pull it out is if I intend to fire it,nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doom,a dumb move on your part dude, you may have set up back a little,as hard as this team is trying to pull together for a championship run,and you pull a dumb stunt like this…C’MON MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. footballMANIAC says:

I was under the impression that Doom didn’t actually pull gun, his shirt just happened to ride up and expose it. Regardless, why the heck are you carrying a gun anyway? I live in Montana, and even here (most) people don’t (usually) carry pistols around with them (though most trucks probably have a gun on the gun rack or in the console… which has led to some misunderstandings with cops or schools).

Anyway, to switch topics, does anyone else fail to see why Lance Ball ever made the team? I preferred Jeremiah Johnson over him, and it sounds like Hillman is an upgraded Johnson. If there are only three HBs on the squad, I’d prefer Moreno to be the third one if he can reach his potential, or Johnson otherwise. Why do they like Ball?

  33. footballMANIAC says:

Oops, forgot a “the”. Pull *the* gun.

  34. tlcat06 says:

He didn’t have a gun at all!

    http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_21085119/elvis-dumervil-arrest-miami-road-rage

And he wasn’t driving his car so he can say he didn’t know there was a gun in the car, which is WHY his lawyer thinks everything will be dropped. Sheesh. I have read four different stories today that are all different! LOL is it Miami police or the media that is screwing this up?

I like Lance Ball, but I’m with you. Jeremiah Johnson is better and Hillman is going to outshine them all (ok, I’m biased). IDK why they like Ball. He must’ve shown them something that we haven’t seen.

  35. FTR says:

Maybe–Just Maybe Dom got pissed and slipped on a McDonlds bag when he got out of his car–then a dog ran between his legs and he fell towards a pawn shop next to the victory secrects shop where he crashed into a by stander who just bought the gun and a TV from the pawn shop– aka said by stander held onto the TV but the gun flew through the open window of Dom’s land Rovever! Landing in his open glove box! Just Joking!

Just have to tell you that I went to Walgreens with my sister today and had to get a postcard for one of my students back home. She studied Tennessee for her state report so I thought I’d take the ten seconds to send her a postcard. Anyway, I had my niece dressed up in her Champ Bailey jersey and the lady goes “So, y’all are from Denver?” and I said “No, I’m from Wyoming and my niece is from Tennessee” and she goes “But she’s wearing a Broncos jersey” and I said “Yeah! Wyoming is Broncos Country.” I think she thought I was a little crazy! LOL Go Broncos!!!!

my sister gets it because she lets me buy My niece anything Broncos I want. And shes a Broncos fan. My niece has a little Manning shirt (-; it was the lady at Walgreens that was confused. My bro in law was a Bronco fan growin up because Tennessee didnt have a team. Funny conversation with him this week. My sis asked me why Peyton didnt choose Tennessee and he said he was happy because Peyton is all washed up and broken and the Broncos are gonna be all sad about it and I had an opportunity to explain to him all I’ve learned due to Tebowmania and all he said after was “I wish we played the Broncos this year” and that my niece can go for the Broncos as long as they aren’t playing the Titans. LOL I am still going to convince her… But I have to wait until she’s older than two! LOL

  40. FTR says:

    LOL @ Cat
Two is a good time to begin!
