Royal’s Special Night Earns Special Honor

October 20th, 2009 - 5:00pm by Chris Gentilviso

A pair of special teams touchdowns against San Diego has granted Eddie Royal his first career special teams honor.

Royal will be named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the Broncos learned on Tuesday, for his Week 6 performance in a 34-23 victory over the Chargers. His 235 total return yards set a franchise record.

The majority of those 235 yards came via that pair of blistering runs on the Chargers’ coverage teams. Royal became the second Bronco and 11th player in NFL history to record a kickoff return for a touchdown (93 yds. in first quarter) and a punt return for a touchdown (71 yds. in second quarter) in the same game. He is the sixth player to accomplish that feat since the 1970 NFL merger.

The last Bronco to accomplish that feat was wearing the same retro brown that Royal wore on Monday night. HB Al Frazier had a 90-yard kickoff return and 55-yard punt return for touchdowns against the Boston Patriots on Dec. 3, 1961.

Royal’s 93-yard kickoff return was the ninth one returned for a touchdown in club history, and first since CB Deltha O’Neal’s run on Oct. 1, 2000 against New England. His 71-yard punt return was the 28th returned for a score in franchise history, and first since WR Glenn Martinez’s 80-yard dash on Nov. 19, 2007 against Tennessee.

Royal is the 19th Bronco to win the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award since its inception in 1993. The last Bronco to earn the distinction was Matt Prater in Week 5 of the 2008 season.

Congrats to the Royal Man… he without a doubt earned this. He was spectacular to watch last night!!! He’s got so much more to give to the team beyond those 2 TDs… can’t wait to see what else he does this season. Enjoy a well-deserved week off!!

    Keep the faith Bronco Country…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  2. baylinorcrush says:

Congrats, Royal, these are the real awards, not the ones voted on by the fans multiple times… So far Bailey won it for the D, Orton for the O and now Royal for the ST completes the trifecta, AWESOME TEAM WORK!

In case you missed it this morning, here is a re-post of the game picks:

    Broncos 34 – Chargers 23

How did you measure up with your predictions?

This week, even so we had 29 guys making picks, no one got real close to the final score but four of you ought to feel pretty darn proud of how you evaluated the game with your picks.

    Best pick of the week:
    royalbroncofan1 34-17
6 points off final score, perfect Bronco score! Congrats.

3 way tie for second best picks of the week:
    D~J~C#24 30-20
    coachemup 31-27
    hometeam0074 27-23
All three 7 points off final score, not too shabby.

As far as the spread was concern, an honorable mention goes to the three following guys who got the 11 points perfect:
    rayjr26 24-13
    tjnartw 24-13
    southstands 27-16

Only one point off the spread with 10 points each:
    D~J~C#24 30-20
    dbroncos6 24-14
    PJBar357 27-17
    brian schneider 27-17
    TheRoyalBeast 27-17
    Marshall15law 27-17
    BroncoWildKansan 27-17

On the other end of the spectrum, we had three guys who obviously have a man crush on Orton, but their downfall was they had absolutely no respect for Rivers:
    Orange Crusher 38-0
    Broncomania56 35-6
    Ellismate#1fan 41-10

This week, the shame on you award goes to a guy who must live on a different planet, or at least on the other side of this one, LOL, because he picked the Chargers to WIN!!!!!!!:
    Ikiratuki 14-16 !!!!!!!

Next week, I’ll be keeping track of all picks made between Monday and Saturday. So if you pick BEFORE Monday, your pick will NOT be included here. I need my week off too, LOL.

  3. royalbroncofan1 says:

Congratulations Eddie Royal !!!!!!!! You were awesome last night kid !!!

  4. dbroncos6 says:

WAY TO GO ROYAL!!!!! BRONCOS 6-0!!!!!!!

  5. LONGTIMEBRONCOSFAN says:

GREAT JOB EDDIE YOU DA MAN

  6. Orange_Crusher says:

    Bay,

I wouldn’t call it a “man crush” but I have considered getting the #8 jersey latley….haha!

I felt like we would go in there and take retribution for the last game, and overall the Broncos did.

My score prediction on the other hand….. You had the part about not respecting Rivers correct. I am blinded by disgust with his behavior as a sportsman and want him to lose more than give respect for his ability. Good for my heart but bad for guessing scores..I guess..

I feel like the Broncos have an offensive explosion just waiting to burst out of the culdera and melt everything in site!! I’ll keep waiting and try to keep my spread between 3-10 like a good follower of your mighty COOL score gussing bronco extra-extravaganza!!!

obtw, I don’t see your score in the list you made? wuwt bro?

  7. RockyMts69 says:

Eddie Royal deserves more than a Special Honor. Denver should give him a key to the city! :) Watching him score those two touchdowns was poetry in motion! It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

And being at the game made it all more special. From the whole team right down to the Denver fans, it was a great night to be in San Diego!

I can honestly say that it was a ‘Rocky Mountain High in San Diego’!

  8. baylinorcrush says:

OC, you always have a great way with words to make us visualize what’s in your mind, “an offensive explosion just waiting to burst out of the culdera and melt everything in site!”. I really enjoy reading your posts, flamboyant, nutty and hard core Bronco stuff. Anyway, what in the heck are you babbling about on the last sentence, who is obtw, wuwt bro? You lost me there, generation gap?

  9. Orange_Crusher says:

Uhh…okay I’m not sure what “gussing bronco” is? My finger is fat and I think I meant to type “guessing”….lol

  10. baylinorcrush says:

Rocky, that had to be a fabulous road game to see. By experience, I usually find road games a lot less fulfilling than home games because of the crowd thing, but I can see where this game transcended that. The best road game I ever saw was in 2000 in New orleans when we beat the Saints 38-23 and Mike Anderson broke the rookie running back record with 251 yards! I never saw anything like that, rookie or regular player. It was quoted as a “Stampede” in the local newspapers the next day.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

OC, keeping the spread between 3 and 10 won’t always get you there, as you remember the Raiders 20 point spread. I bet the first time you give a conservative score, one of the team will blow out the other, ahahahah.

  12. Orange_Crusher says:

    Bay,

    Sorry for the abbreviations…

obtw = oh, by the way
wuwt = whats up with that…bro

I totally enjoy reading you stuff and the way your keeping track of and writing about the scores and such!! Way cool Man!

    Bronc On! Bay!

  13. baylinorcrush says:

OC, you’re giving me inspiration here, I might be able to turn my #6 jersey into a #8 jersey with just a little white paint… Yes, don’t lose your cool over it, I still have that dumb jersey in my closet. Told you I’m too cheap to toss it and definitely not brave enough like you to burn it, LOL.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

OC, way to rub it in, you know darn well why my pick is not anywhere on the list, it was a boring pick that fell in the middle of the range and had no business being recognized (27-14). At least I didn’t do so bad that I got recognized at the bad end of the picks like someone I know, ahahahah. Seriously, I had 29 guys picking so I don’t write all of them down, too boring, I just go with the better overall and the closest to the spread then I go to the bottom of the bunch with picks like yours, LOL.

  15. RockyMts69 says:

Hey there Bay! That game was one of the best I have seen in a looooong time. As far as the ‘crowd thing’. I think San Diego has a great fan base. I mean where we were sitting, and even on the train back to Old Town, we never ran into any problems what so ever. Most people in SD are there for the same reason…, to enjoy the game. Granted you will always one or two knuckle heads, but that’s at any game. I’ve seen worse at my seven year old daughters soccer games! :)

  16. tjnartw says:

Congrats to Eddie.U da Man. And way to go Broncos with the great TEAM effort. When I watched the press conferences on the NFL Network last night it looked like Rivers now knows his place. 3.5 games behind the West Division Leaders.

And thanks for noticing my prediction and the honorable mention (baylinorcrush) lol. I’ve not been very good with the score predictions but I’m very confident in what this team can do. Gods, I can’t wait for November 1st. lol

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. baylinorcrush says:

Rocky, what I meant is the home crowd does all the screaming for your own team, to where on away games, it’s not as fun because the crowd noise goes against you, so when your team does well, you don’t get the same excitement because it’s dead quite. The only stadium where I was a bit concern for me and my wife was the new Dolphins stadium, pretty tough crowd there, that cuban blood runs pretty hot, never been at the Raiders and don’t think I want to, LOL.

  18. RockyMts69 says:

I have a good story to share with all of you. From where I was sitting, there was quite a few Denver fans in my section, and the in surrounding sections as well. As the game started to wind down, the Denver fans started chanting “LET’S GO BRONCOS!!!” and “6-0 HERE WE GO!”. At one point we got so loud that a couple of players and staff heard us, turned around and gave us that look like we were out of our minds! It was either that, or they were thinking that they were at home game for a minute! To see the expressions on their faces was priceless!

  19. RockyMts69 says:

Bay, I would’nt go into a Raiders game if the tickets were free and I had body gaurds! :)

  20. baylinorcrush says:

It’s weird to think that we will not have lost a single game in both September and October, next game being Nov. 1st as tjnartw just said.

  21. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

Yeah Royal!!!! Congrats buddy, and well deserved. Lets hope we can see more of that in weeks to come.

Man I can’t wait til’ the Monday Night Game against the Steelers. I got two tickets to that game and have been waiting oh so patiently for it to come. But first things first we gotta take care of those Ravens. Their stellar D V.S. our SUPER STELLAR D….HA….stupid bye week

  22. MadDawgMac says:

    Awesome Eddie,

In 2 weeks you could be the 12 man to do it also:)

  23. BroncoOrdie0730 says:

Just have to stop in here and give props to Eddie, the guys just exploded up the field and i believe he was only grazed by one hand on both of those run backs! i came out of my chairs yelling “GO ROYAL GO”!!! over and over until he reached the endzone. My girlfriend got up and left the room, (it’s her first football season with me, guess this will make us or break us) lol
i’d love to see Royal do it a few more times this year!
Great Job Eddie and a well deserved award for you.
    GO BRONCOS!!

  24. footballMANIAC says:

It’s easy to forget that special teams was the initial reason we drafted Royal. It kind of went on the back burner after the season he had last year, though. It turns out that we got both an excellent reciever and a dangerous returner in Royal. Congrats! On a side note, I find it interesting that both of our starting recievers (Marshall and Royal) were drafted in the 2nd round. A possible correlation? Is it just me, or does it seem like 1st round recievers rarely turn out as all they are hyped to be? Remember Lelie? A prime example, along with Heywards-Bey, it seems. Lastly, have I ever mentioned how much I hate Rivers? I’ll admit he’s a pretty good quarterback (you have to be to have his stats with the Chargers offensive line), but he’s also an arrogant punk who is way too full of himself and needs to somehow be humbled. I hate his attitude, and I’d hate him even if he were on the Broncos. Heck, I even know Chargers fans who don’t like him!

  25. paulbedichek says:

Great job Eddie!! Class act.You guys remember Rick Upchurch wasn’t the reciever Eddie is though.Great game team effort.Great to give Rivers the defeatI know he is a trash talker.I have to say though he really is an outstanding QB doesn’t throw too many pics and he couldn’t escape his DOOM!!Kudos to our hero KO great game the guy just wants to win.TY Kyle.

  26. broncosfreak30 says:

Yea, this game was an excellent game on all aspects of the ball. We DEFINITELY increased our special teams. Our Defense held their own like they always do in the second half. And of course our Offense was outstanding. I love how McDaniels is coming out each week and doing something a little different so teams cant predict whats going to happen! I mean Tony Sheffler, 101 yards, what a GREAT team and GREAT team effort to get our 6th win.

    GOOO BRONNNCCCOOOSSS!!

  27. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Eddie Royal is my favorite Bronco and has been since he came in at Week 1 at Oakland last season and made MeAngelo Hall look really foolish. In any case, we have too many weapons for defenses to account for and our defense is lights out (with all due respect to Shawne Merroidhead in San Diego). This season is ours for the taking. Let’s keep up our winning ways. GO BRONCOS!!!

  28. Wildman347 says:

paulbedichek: “You guys remember Rick Upchurch”
One of the best return guys of his era! On top of that he is a class act!
I got to spend my birthday with him at a sports bar in Las Vegas last year durring the Raiders season opener last year. The owner of the bar bet him a $500 bottle on the game and we got to partake in it with him.
Got autographs the whole night was so awsome!
Any way, Stellar performance Eddie! I am stoked for the rest of the season!

    This is BRONCOS COUNTRY!!!

  29. JElway_fan7 says:

    EDDIE ROYAL, YOU DA MAN!!!!!!

  30. Myke says:

I had so much fun jumping up & down along the aisles of Qualcomm Stadium as Eddie Royal ran back those 2 returns for TDs that I accidentally broke my girlfriend’s finger nail in the process. It’s ok it was all worth it as she’s a Chargers fan. Let’s keep it up boys, the promise land is on the horizon that you can now start smelling it…next stop is smelling it! LOL

    GO BRONCOS!!

  31. broncosfreak30 says:

    Dang baylinorcrush…

Dave never got on tonight I am guessing, I posted a comment on his blog on fanhuddle.com and he didnt respond so I guess he was busy today. Haha, I thought I could get ahold of him today because me, you, him, and 07elway always seem to be on about every day! O well, hopefully I will talk to him about the jerseys tomorrow or something!

  32. TheRoyalBeast says:

lmao…like we all didnt see this coming… what he did has only happened 11 times ever. congratulations Eddie. well deserved. Thats what you call the Royal Treatment.

Baylin, you’ve got a knack for this. sure you are not a bookie in real life? J/K lol

Disclaimer: It was a joke denverbroncos.com, there is no illegal betting ring going on under your noses, we have too much respect for yall to do that lol.

  33. TheRoyalBeast says:

wow, awaiting moderation?!?!? never seen that before….once again, just kidding.

  34. monodono says:

    Good Job Eddie ! ! !
I remmember Rick Upchurch Wildman347, and when Eddie Royal scored twice on His returns I automatically tried to think who did it before, for The Broncos and I thought it was Upchurch. Never in a million years would I have guessed Al Frazier.
paulbedichek, Upchurch was a pretty good reciever in His day.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  35. baylinorcrush says:

broncosfreak30, unfortunately I saw yesterday that DDave was dealing with a virus on his computer that was keeping him out of action for now, even on his website.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

Talking of Upchurch, a little trivia, does anyone know who he was dating while he was a Bronco?

  37. baylinorcrush says:

In 1970, he dated Condolezza Rice who was attending the University of Denver, no joke…

  38. baylinorcrush says:

I meant in 1970′s, he wasn’t a Bronco until 75, my first year as a Bronco fan.

  39. brian_schneider says:

    Congrats Royal!!!

  40. broncoryan says:

Congrats to Royal! This was a slam dunk of a decision with her performance money. Now the guys get a well deserved week off!

Chargers are on the decline and they know it…..Kansas City might not appear to be so but they will be on the rise in the next couple years. San Diego will be riding the bottom of the AFC West with Oakland sometime soon. Gates is getting old…..LT looks pathetic…..and Rivers is outrageously overrated. Hey….Rivers even said it himself in his press conference, they will “find a way somehow to get into January play”. Already checked yourself out of the division that quickly? Broncos are a different team and they know it.

  41. broncoryan says:

where I said money…..it should have been monDAY…..price I pay for hurrying!

  42. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

Not only is he an awesome football player but he’s an awesome person. Very happy for him. Cheers all around.

    Great job Eddie.

  43. broncoryan says:

    mad_orange_devil_27,

Thats what is so nice about Eddie, he has a lot more class then most of these guys out there playing pro ball. He does what he has to do for the TEAM….not for self

  44. brian_schneider says:

The cool thing is when he first came in to the league he soaked up everything that Rod Smith was handing out. When Rod would come to the complex Royal would pick his brain. Royal has done a lot of things right to get where he is. Glad he finally got some recognition.

  45. broncosfreak30 says:

    Yea baylinorcrush,

Thats what I read on his post on that. That really sucks whenever you get a gay virus on your computer i can definitely relate. Well hopefully he’ll be back on and running soon! I know how bad it drives me crazy whenever I am unable to get on here and read everything!

  46. broncos20 says:

that was a memorable game…a thousand THANKS to Royal for giving us that excitment and congratulations.

although that was memorable, it was River’s face during the second half of the game that I found priceless…lol..
first half, after he scored that TD pass, you could see his demeaning behavior towards the Broncos, shouting, fist-pumping, walking around their sideline with that smurck, thinking he was still playing against that kid(cutlass) or whatever his name was..i wanted somebody to hurt him so bad..lol
during the second, thank God to Nolan and McDaniels for making the adjustments, his face was priceless: almost confused, frustated…realizing he was outplayed by Orton…that was pricelss..

rest up Broncos…unfortunate that this BYE week might take some of the edges of our momentum….but we all belief we’ll take out the Ravens.

  47. Atwater4Hof says:

I’ve been away for awhile, college work finally started kicking in… but I am still in absolute shock with how this season has started. For the first quarter I thought Rivers was going to carve us up for 450 yards and 3 or 4 TDs, especially after B-Dawk went down. In the past, we would respond to weak pass defense by dropping more men into coverage, this year we respond by blitzing and playing bump and run on the outside. I love it. Mcbean, Peterson, and Fields are the most underrated group of D-linemen in football and have allowed Doom and Williams to roam free.

Absolutely love this team, historically we have struggled vs Baltimore so hopefully this is the year we turn the tables on them. This bye week will be nice to get Dawkins, Bucky, Fields, and Larsen nursed back to health to be at full strength in the next 2 games against Balt. and Pitt

  48. Dynamicdave says:

The jerseys are nice jerseys. I own 2 of them. They are quality made. Free shipping in North America.

I just got back online. My computer got hit by a malicious anti spyware program. It tries to trick you into believing that your system is under attack. Couldn’t shut it down. It messed with my files etc.. I was working on it while the SD/Denver game was on. It took me about 36 straight hours of going through my files and folders, etc. Got it all.

  49. broncosfreak30 says:

Are the jerseys the officially authentic thing from the NFL??

  50. broncosfreak30 says:

I think we need this bye week. The Ravens are no joke of a team and I feel comfortable knowing that we will be able to prepare for them for two whole weeks! The momentum will not be lost or go down, our boys have all the momentum in the world and has all of the negativity and unfaithfulness riding on their shoulders from all the espn and football analysts trying to put them down before the season even started. They are here to prove a point and they are going to prove it.
The season is ours for the taking!
    GOOO BRRROOONNNCOOOSSS!!
