A pair of special teams touchdowns against San Diego has granted Eddie Royal his first career special teams honor.
Royal will be named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the Broncos learned on Tuesday, for his Week 6 performance in a 34-23 victory over the Chargers. His 235 total return yards set a franchise record.
The majority of those 235 yards came via that pair of blistering runs on the Chargers’ coverage teams. Royal became the second Bronco and 11th player in NFL history to record a kickoff return for a touchdown (93 yds. in first quarter) and a punt return for a touchdown (71 yds. in second quarter) in the same game. He is the sixth player to accomplish that feat since the 1970 NFL merger.
The last Bronco to accomplish that feat was wearing the same retro brown that Royal wore on Monday night. HB Al Frazier had a 90-yard kickoff return and 55-yard punt return for touchdowns against the Boston Patriots on Dec. 3, 1961.
Royal’s 93-yard kickoff return was the ninth one returned for a touchdown in club history, and first since CB Deltha O’Neal’s run on Oct. 1, 2000 against New England. His 71-yard punt return was the 28th returned for a score in franchise history, and first since WR Glenn Martinez’s 80-yard dash on Nov. 19, 2007 against Tennessee.
Royal is the 19th Bronco to win the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award since its inception in 1993. The last Bronco to earn the distinction was Matt Prater in Week 5 of the 2008 season.

I always liked Rick U. I also liked the M & M connection – Morton and Moses. Every once in a while I think about the song from Jon Keyworth “Make Those Miracles Happen”.
Football maniac Royal was 2nd round but Marshall was 4th Round.
I watched an interview with Rod Smith and he was talking about Brandon M. and how he reached out to Brandon M. He also talked about Royal and said that Royal still comes to him for advise.
I really like this Bronco team and I think they will be even more special than they are now. During preseason I thought 10-6 but now I don’t see them any less than 12 wins and maybe as many as 14.
I think it’s safe to say we are all hoping for Eddie to rack up some receiving TD’s, etc, but his play on Monday Night was nothing short of amazing….and I’m sure people will say this too, but I called the first runback and before the second one I was like “forget offense, we will just use Eddie all night and see if Rivers can keep up!” and the next thing you know, he’s in the endzone again!
Beating San Diego , to me, is bigger than beating any other team in this league for the Broncos…..playoffs here we come….with a HEAD OF STEAM!
I watched the game with my mother-in-law and it was still tight at the time and I remarked at the time about how tight of a game it was. She said yea but I wish they would get a couple fumbles and it wasn’t but maybe two plays later that they got that first fumble while sacking Rivers. I agree that beating the Chargers was the biggest game and win so far. I think it was DJ Williams that remarked that it was like getting a monkey off their back.
yeh, back before preseason it thought that a 10-6 record this season was a real probability. Now (don’t want to jinx anything but) I’m thinking that maybe 12-4 or 13-3 is a real possibility.
just need to take it one game at a time and trust in the team effort. I can tell you one thing though, watching Cutler play and throwing the ball for 30 or 40 yds. at a time had my gut in an uproar everytime because I was worried that the ball would get picked off. Now watching K.O. I don’t feel any of those bad feelings because You can just about see everything on the tv developing.
I understand that some of you like the long passes for gainers but us old people just can’t put up with the upset stomachs as much as we used to. LOL
GGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBRONCOS
tjnartw, good point about not being so nervous about INT’S watching Orton throw. I can use it, the ticker is probably not as strong as it used to be given I had to watch everyone of Elway’s 47 fourth quarter comebacks (NFL record). LOL. Not that I didn’t enjoy the end result of everyone of them, but it sure drove me to near insanity and heart attacks many times over, I am sure all the old fans out here would attest to that.
Alzado, lately, it seems I read quite a few posts about guys watching the game with their mother-in-law. What’s up with that? LOL.
I’ve had three in my life and like most guys, they would be just about the last persons I would want to share watching one of my Bronco game with. Are you kidding me!?!?!? LOL. Nothing personal, I just think it doesn’t sound right, watching the game with my mother-in-law. I would not fess up to it had I ever done it, ahahah. To top it all off, yours anticipates the plays (fumbles)!!! LOL. Sorry man couldn’t resist, it was right here in front of me….
Congrats Eddie Monster!! (tuning to halloween season). Keep them coming.
And maybe after the next game we could say to bandwagons: “eat raven” instead of “eat crow”…
Go Broncooos!
Glad we have a bye week. Hope the boys get a little break and get some bruises healed up. Too bad the Ravens are on bye week with us, but it will make for a great match up on 11/01/09.
broncosfreak30, as far as I can tell, they are. They are heavy material, not cheap cloth. It has the NFL emblem on the front of the v neck. Just ask them. I had a question for them and they got right back to me the same day.

Well, I thought I was all done with that spyware. I already had very low memory/ram and I’m low on virtual memory. That program ate a bunch of my memory. I keep getting kicked out of sites. I think it removed some of my registry, as well. If I could ever by the Grace of God, be allowed 5 minutes with these punks who do this stuff, it would take me less then 30 seconds to see to it that he/she/it never used those fingers again. I’m going to talk to the CEO of Fan Huddle and let him know I should be at full strength by Friday. Going to buy more memory.
With all of this talk about Rick Upchurch, I have to share my experience with him. I got his autograph in St. George, Utah several years back and he was really gregarious and kind. He took plenty of time for me and it appears that Eddie Royal is his heir apparent. Hopefully, Rick U., currently of Mesquite, Nev. can earn his rightful place in the Hall of Fame. GO BRONCOS!!!
Thanks DynamicDave…
That was very helpful, i ordered three, and one for my girlfriend, and three for my uncle! He gave me 37 a piece for them which is INSANE! I dont know why I am getting more, I already have about 10. Haha, but you can NEVER have enough Bronco jerseys! I think everyone would agree with me in this chat room!
