Royal Named Special Teams Player of the Week

November 8th, 2011 - 6:13pm by Gray Caldwell

Eddie Royal’s 85-yard punt return for the go-ahead touchdown in Sunday’s 38-24 win against the Oakland Raiders earned the wide receiver AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for Week 9.

It’s the first such award for a Bronco this season.

Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway congratulated Royal on his Twitter account.

On Monday, Royal was quick to give credit to Quan Cosby, who he said has “been doing a great job for us” as a punt returner since joining the team just before Week 3.

But he said he always jokingly whispered to Special Teams Coordinator Jeff Rodgers to let him field a punt.

“Let me get back there, I still got it, let me make a play,” Royal smiled. “So when the game came down, I think there were five minutes left, he kind of looked at me and said, ‘Come on.’ I thought he was joking at first, and then he said, ‘Come on.’ I hopped up. It was a great play. The guys did a great job of blocking and it all worked out.”

Royal also earned the award in 2009, when he became the 11th player in NFL history to return a punt (71 yds.) and a kickoff (93 yds.) for a touchdown in the same game at San Diego. He also earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October.

i compare you alot to D. Jackson…..all this hard work is going to pay off compared to getting it all easy at first and not knowing how to get past adversity…you are the man.

Royal rocks … reason I don’t want him to ever leave the broncos. He is an overall great guy, well known with the fans, good character, great talent.

Lika Arianna I often compare him to desean too … similar weight, height and speed. Both went in the 2nd round in the same year (Royal before Desean). I hope Royal can do more PRs …. Just PRs … not KR or nothing … not that there is much KR left. He is a special talent … we have seen what he can do in the return and recieving game … all he needs is consistency and a staff and of course fans that believe in him. I pray this is the first of many. No more back sliding. Way to god Eddie.

os: Nice vid LAX, Always wondered about the wolverine weapon x thing now I know … man after watching that … I totally want that man to get a ring … with us. But we are so far from one. But he is still playing like a champ at 38 … something Lynch couldn’t do. Heck his words alone are worth a paycheck lol … hopefully he gets into coaching like rod woodson … so that if he doesn’t win a ring as a player he can at least win one as a coach. Man got passion, fire, intensity, character, humility, etc … man is a role model … Tebow-esk … man of God … but don’t catch as much flack as TT tho … prolly cuz he will knock you out LMAO.

    TRB

  7. alexanserg says:

congrats eddie. you definitely earned it.

  8. sndvl says:

TRB, love how you ended that “Probably cause he’ll knock you out”!

Well said! I have always been a Wolverine fan…knew that about Dawkins too. So when he signed here, I was stoked!!!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!

    Great job Royal!!
Do that again against the Chiefs!!
This game against the Chiefs will be the game to beat.
They just gotta! Broncos need to win the next couple of games
so they can throw off the AFC West. Hopefullly become 2nd or
even first place. Broncos have got a shot! Go Broncos!!

  14. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Congrats Eddie Royal!!! I love when the media has to eat thier words.

Before the game ESPNs segment entitled ‘Where You At?’ had Royal’s name on the list. After the game ‘The Blitz’ aired and during the highlight reel it showed Royal reeling in his TD pass “Where you at,” said Boom promptly followed by “There he is TJ,” Tom Jackson, the former Bronco chuckled.

The final highlight was Royal returning a punt for a TD “he-could-go-all-the-way!” Proclaimed Boomer. Classic baby, just classic… I loved every second of it and hope to see more!

I hope that that type of game can have more of an effect on how we utilize Royal, maybe getting him some plays in the open, some bubble screens, and the like. As sndvl alluded to; when Royal has a good game we usually get a W in the column.

    Mile High Salute!

    -Royalty

  15. Bronco_Turtle says:

I am very excited to see Von Doom get after Cassell this Sunday… Von consistently got hits on the quarterback in the second half by rushing the ‘A’ gap and this means really good things for the other defensive players like Doom and Ayers… I think Dawk will get a big hit and force a fumble as the natural response of the offense will be to have a back chip down, much like Green Bay used their back to chip out on Von in the second half. I also expect DMT to have a big game, Royal and Decker will draw most of the safety help and all big man has to do is ‘Run Forest Run’ then catch it! :o ) Furthermore, I heard tell that Jeebus and TT had another session and he (Jeebus) has devined another game plan that will keep us all smiling!

The VON TEBOW Era is upon us! Get your Cool-Aid right here folks cause I’m selling it by the gallon!!! ;o)

  16. Bronco_Turtle says:

PS PLEASE RE-SIGN EDDIE ROYAL TO A LONG TERM CONTRACT BEFORE SEASONS END!!! (cough cough duh)

  17. Bronco_Turtle says:

PS PS (I know he asked for a trade but it’s worth a shot if Tebow gets some W’s and ER gets some targets)

I hope #26 is feeling better, that was an Atwater type hit that I saw there only he forgot to add in a Raider…

I have seen many oppinions about Albert Haynesworth tonight here, some well written, others just the same Blah blah you hear on sportcenter… My feeling is, if you bring him knowing you will get the biggest, baddest, meanest DT in the Game for 6 snaps a game then you cut Unrien and you sign him with the understanding of him affecting the game on 6 snaps,… Mitch hasn’t and will not affect 6 NFL snaps in his entire career, I think the math is in our favor here (and I love Mitch, being from Wyoming and him playing in Laramie and all)… Just a thought, and I eagerly await your comments

  18. Bronco_Turtle says:

PS PS PS Good Night Broncoland!!!

    FTC!!!

  19. baylinorcrush says:

Nice to see Royal doing something again, it was long overdue, we need more of that Eddie.

And it makes total sense that when he does well we win because we have hardly won at all the last three season.

Time to reverse that trend, keep it going Eddie, we count on you for a long term steady production, not just a game here and there.

And totally disagree with Turtle, in a TEAM sport it’s not about how many snaps you can contribute but how your attitude is towards the team all year long, on and off the field and Haintworthit is a p*ss poor team player if I ever saw one bringing everyone around him down, a prima donna DT, who needs that! We didn’t stand for Marshall’s antics so let’s bring haintworth*hit to bring back the good old days, some of you guys are nuts with all due resepct. They say desperate times call for desperate measures but come on this is ridiculous and if EFX goes down that road I will be flabbergasted, they can’t be that stupid.

  20. collies10 says:

You know I am quietly optimistic with our team at the minute. Feel we saw Doom showing more of what he is capable. McGahee has been top class. Hats off to him he shows how you are meant to earn your paycheck, real pro. Tebow showing signs of improvement. Von has been outstanding and obviously only gonna get better.

We are settling into a new head coach, new defensive coach (again) and new starting quarterback. We have been close in all games bar detroit and greenbay who I personally think will produce the superbowl winner.

Need to beat Kansas this week and we have back to back wins. Alot of things to be happy about. The offensive line is young, producing the goods and Royal reemerging. If Morena and Thomas can contribute (big if) we are on track for a decent 2nd half of the season.

Keep the faith Bronco fans it is early days but we might be seeing the beginning of spring from are winter wilderness.

  21. collies10 says:

should say Decker producing the goods.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

    Legwold about our new O:

A long time ago a high school coach in Ohio, Tiger Ellison, scrawled what he called “The Lonesome Polecat” on a chalkboard, and the scrambling quarterback officially became a weapon.

Ellison’s idea, to overload the left side of the offensive line to give his passer more room to run or throw, evolved into the run-and-shoot offense as well as parts of the spread option offense that sits on the Broncos’ doorstep.

“We’re trying to put guys in position where they can succeed,” Broncos coach John Fox said. “It’s something he’s more comfortable with. He has a lot of confidence in it.”

Now comes the next step for the Broncos, the decision whether to do something few, if any, NFL teams have done with their most prized roster possession through the years — put their starting quarterback in a full-time option offense.

“We’ll see,” Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal said.

“Whatever it takes,” McGahee said. “If that’s running the option, it’s running the option. Eventually we’ll have to get our passing game up and we will, I think.”

NFL teams have flirted with the option in the recent past — Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn in Atlanta or Vince Young and Chris Johnson with the Titans — but it was just spot duty.

The Broncos have pushed the envelope further.

“They don’t count that guy as a runner,” Fox said. “It’s kind of been done, but maybe not to the exact level we’re kind of at right now.”

“This is a what have you done for me lately league,” Fox said. “We’ve experimented, looked at things and tweaked things. We’re still a work in progress. We’re trying to figure out our football team. We made a change at that position and we’re in the process of that now.”

This was specially addressed to all the bloggers here who said Fox was setting up Tebow to fail, what a slap in the face you guys just got, you should be feeling foolish enough about all that to take a well needed sabbatical from the blog, goody then, LOL.

  23. BroncosRmyReligion says:

The best part about the Tebow to Royal TD is that if he hadn’t caught the ball, he would of got it in the facemask. Not like Orton to Royal who would throw it at his feet.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

Ror once I hope idiot La Canfora is right:

La Canfora expects Josh McDaniels to become the new head coach in KC after Haley is fired at the end of the year…..

    Yeaaaaahhhh! LMAO.

Will never happen though, they can’t be that stupid in KC, maybe he might be the new OC there but that would be as far as they would go, no one will give another shot at HC to McD specially after what he’s done with the Rams O this year, which is O, other than one game. What does that Canfora guy drink, BFE’s moonshine?

  25. baylinorcrush says:

    For once…

  26. collies10 says:

lmao at Bay, welome to winter KC

  27. baylinorcrush says:

I truly believe KC will be fine as long as Pioli stays there, they have acquired great talent through the last few drafts and their problem is they have suffered so many major injuries at their key positions it makes us look like the healthiest team in the land. I can see them probably needing to make a change at HC though, Haley is kind of a hot head, not like McD, but hot head none the less, uber arrogant, and I’ll tell you what, looking at how that team has been built, many coaches would be knocking at the Chiefs door for that job, unlike when they turned their backs to ours. All I’m saying is don’t dismiss the Chiefs for the future at all.

  28. collies10 says:

Hear what you are saying Bay. More aimed at Mcd being mentioned. How anyone would consider him a year after destroying us would be hard to fathom.

  29. baylinorcrush says:

Talking about the Chiefs, yesterday a blogger brought up the line scalp the Chiefs and now we have a brand new blogger who picked it up as his new handle, ScalptheChiefs. I think that’s grotesque and in very poor taste. I’m very surprised the blog administration would allow such slenderous handle even though I realize it’s all done in fun. Sometimes the line has to be drawn somewhere I would hope.

  30. killerkod says:

Should be an interesting game against the chiefs……….not sure which team will show up……….for them and our broncos. Plus, we always have a tough time playing in arrowhead. But hey, if the fins can go in there and come out with a victory, then damn it, so should we! lol

We really need to get our pass rush on and get after cassell…..cause that’s when he’s at his worst. Let’s hope TT’s passing keeps improving and he gets more comforatable in the pocket. Keeping the opposing D honest will lead to big plays both on the ground and in the air.

    Can’t wait!!

  31. killerkod says:

and any talk of picking up Hayneworth is redonkulous……..the guy is a bum and will prob never have a team pick him up.

  32. 4Eva-A-Bronco says:

Finally back from my specialization training. Bay I am not sure how things went while you under the knife, but it appears you are doing , well god bless you and will pray that you continue to recover well. As far as the Haynesworth which I read briefly about being a good acquisition, I firmly have to say HECK NO. Well we play the chiefs and I think it is going to be a hard fought game and will be won or lost solely by our defense. The reason, is that I think our offense will score points, but our defense plays well on spurts, and if the defense doesn’t stop the chiefs, I don’t think we will play well enough in a shootout, but heck maybe I’m wrong. I hope to see us come away with the win, to all I have missed blogging with you the past couple of days. Going to get some sleep, as I’m jet lagged, but will. Log more with you all later. Be safe 4Eva out.

  33. strandoftds says:

I`m sure Fox and McCoy will put together a good game plan this week. There starting to utilize Tims strengths. I liked what I saw against the raiders. Win or lose this coming sunday, I`ll be happy if the coaches use what works best for Tim Tebow. Thats all I ask, and I think they will.

  34. strandoftds says:

    Prediction; Broncos win 24-23.

  35. strandoftds says:

Oh, and by the way, congrats to Eddie Royal. I know it`s there in him to be productive. The coaches should put him in the game plan more. My only knock on Eddie is that he`s been injured the last two years. I believe in him though.

  36. killerkod says:

I think he can still be a beast in the slot………..let’s hope he can get it going and the coaches use him properly.

Was it just me or was DT completely invisible last game? Will he show up this weekend?

  37. Orange27CRUSHER says:

I have to say I have not liked Eddie Royal as a WR the last two years, but I have always liked him as a RETURNER!!! GOOD JOB EDDIE!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!! 8)

  38. savinghyrule says:

It’s not impossible for us to win in Arrowhead. We did it two years ago, right?

  39. baylinorcrush says:

We killed them at KC in 2009 44-13.

  40. sndvl says:

They put it to us in our house to end that season too.

  41. sndvl says:

I’d like to chime in on Haintworthit. In a word- no. For all obvious reasons. But I do agree with TRB. And every person is capable of redemption. If EFX were to make the unlikely decision to claim him, guys like Champ, Dawkins, Elvis and Uncle Woodrow could get in his head. Be a positive influence. (the thin air in Denver might mellow him out a bit as well). Its not as he has a high price tag, won’t cost us a draft pick. Best thing is, if it weren’t a good fit, then he could be cut.
Afterall Fox is a ‘players coach’ and we run the 4-3.
Not to mention- i’d have to think he would love the chance to play against the Pats in a few weeks…
    I know it’s unlikely. It’s a low risk/high reward type of thing

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  42. baylinorcrush says:

And we lost 6-10 at KC last year.

  43. baylinorcrush says:

If TRB and sndvl had their ways we would be running an asylum around here, LOL.

  44. savinghyrule says:

Why are people nervous about the NE game? We’ve had their number for years now, even when we had a worse team than we have now. Obviously we can’t overlook them – they are the Pats after all – but still, I just wonder why some of you have that game singled out.

  45. sndvl says:

Lol baylin. Good thing we don’t have our way kddn

Savinghyrule, NE is the measuring stick in the AFC…you’re right though. We do match up well against them.

  46. baylinorcrush says:

I’m worried about every single game at this point in our franchise, there is not one game on the schedule that is an easy game to me, Miami game rings a bell?

  47. baylinorcrush says:

What we did against the Patriots before Fox isn’t as good a measuring stick as this:

John Fox went 1-2 against the Patriots as the Panthers’ head coach, including a 32-29 loss in Super Bowl XXXVIII following the 2003 season. Carolina earned a measure of revenge with a 27-17 win at Bank of America Stadium in Week 2 of the 2005 season, but the Patriots defeated Carolina 20-10 in Week 14 of the 2009 season when Laurence Maroney (!) ran for 94 yards on 22 carries — 20 more yards than he gained in his brief Broncos career.

  48. baylinorcrush says:

    Stupid Baloney!!

  49. savinghyrule says:

Haha yeah I give every game an equal level of concern for sure. This is the NFL after all, where the phrase “Any Given Sunday” actually does ring true. I was just curious at the seemingly extra attention the NE game was getting is all. Not necessarily from this board, but by Broncos fans in general.

It’s funny how you remember random things. I distinctly remember beating NE in their house a few years back with Brian Griese.
