At the league’s annual meeting in New Orleans earlier this offseason, the owners passed a proposed rule change that moves kickoffs from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line.
Talking with Broncos TV, Special Teams Coordinator Jeff Rodgers said he knows how the rule will affect his kickoff and return teams, but the problem lies in figuring out how other teams will react to the change.
“You’re projecting a little bit when you’re watching tape,” he said. “As far as your opponent — how are they going to feel about it? There are some teams who aren’t going to take advantage of the fact that they can get more touchbacks — some teams are just going to kick it as high as they can and try to cover and get you inside the 20(-yard line) since their cover guys are 5 yards closer.”
Rodgers said that until games are played with the rule in place, there’s no way to tell for sure how teams will attack it.
“There’s still more things to think about and I’m sure that there are some things that will come up in the preseason that somebody will try,” he said. “That’s usually what happens with rule changes with regards to the kicking game. You’ve kind of got to scour the league and watch how everybody’s doing stuff so you can get a general sense of how your next opponent might try a certain thing.”

BLOG overload!!!!!! Hopefully this recent activity correlates to positive signs the season is close at hand.
Baylin, love the piece on the KC game. Not that I needed any validation, but McD was way in over his head with too much authority. Recipe for disaster. All I can say is thankfully he is gone and not Champ.
As for Moreno, his holdout clued me in. Time for him to step up or step out. Who woulda thought Brandon Marshall getting in his face a few years back was actually justified?!?! (TRB your vote doesn’t count, lol).
Still lovin this Colorado air! And I found an awesome blue and orange striped Chaps polo shirt for 8 bucks…
My strike continues
This is the best time of the year to be in Colorado, lucky dog!
Yeah Marshall had some foresight there but TRB will be between a rock and a hard place to back Marshall up since he still thinks Moreno is the bomb, LOL.
About the rule change it sounds just like the cba, still a total unknown, haha.
Btw, I want to publicly congratulate Gray on just getting married and it’s obvious he’s gotten some new found strength from his honeymoon since he’s is back posting new blogs just about daily, haha. Congrats!
Me I get my strength from the Leopard Lady, LOL.
Haha thank you baylinorcrush.
Good to be back in Denver. Not that I would mind being back in Aruba, either.
Blogs are coming on strong lately — we’ll have a post from Jim Saccomano this afternoon and another cheerleader blog this evening. Then look for another cheerleader calendar shoot update tomorrow, and Mike Rice will check in this weekend.
From the pics I have been seeing, I could get strength from any of them. Wish I was there!
Congrats to you Gray. Hope you have many, many years of bliss, not to mention a houdsefull of youngins!
Ah, marriage, everyone should try it a couple times. How old are you Gray, this is only your 1st? Trial and error, that’s my motto. One of my friends asked me “why don’t you just find a woman you don’t like and buy her a house.”LOL All kidding aside, my wife and I are still on our honeymoon and we’ve been together for 11+ years. May you be as happy 10 years from now as you are today. I’m warning you , it’s all down hill after that. LOL
Congratulations Gray! Best wishes to you.
Only one wife here and one is all I need… still going strong after 2 kids and 21 yrs of marriage.
That’s because you are about the easiest going guy I know here, congrats rbf1, I’m going on 16 years with mine, but she is not the first, nor the second, guys like imready and I really have to work hard at finding a woman who can put up with us, LOL.
I guess that I have all of you beat at something finally. This is my 4th and has been for for 29 wonderful years this coming Sept.. Wouldn’t trade her for anything in this world! Raised 4 great children and have 7 grandchildren so far.
Oh, and yes bay, I had to work real hard to find one to put up with me.
Sndvl, My vote totally does count … Altho I am always defending Marshall lol. I just always feel the need to because everyone always assumes the worst when it comes to Marshall.
Bay, are you really trying to compare my optimism for Moreno with my love for Marshall (pause) … Marshall will win everytime. For the record that year I wasn’t a fan of the Moreno pick (or Ayers) … I thought we were going D all the way like Cushings or orakpo … at least Ayers was D be not what I was expecting. The point is because I have faith that Moreno and Ayers will do better in this new regime, doesn’t mean I was a fan of their selection or in love with them now … It just proves how much faith I did not have in anything McDaniels lol. I still think Moreno might be good in a zone scheme, don’t care what woody says. And Ayers in a 4-3. Its optimism speaking. What I do appreciate from the woody mailbag is hearing that Josh admitted he made a mistake again lmfao. That guy was a drafting nightmare. TRB out….
Congrats to you Gray, marriage is a big blessing. And Thanks for all of your posts with some of the inside scoops.
Also. Congratulations Gray on your Nuptuals. Wish you and your wife all the best as you start a new family. TRB out…
Weatherman1, sometimes it takes a try or two until you finally find a GEM. And 7 grandchildren, you are one busy man. Life is grand!
Thanks bay – for the most part I am easy going. Try not to get to worked up anymore. Try to maintain an even strain….lol. Keep stress level down, although I still manage to get worked up at games.. j/k.
new blog.
Thanks everyone! And as strandoftds said, there’s a new blog up from Sacco — a pretty interesting story about Lyle Alzado boxing Muhammad Ali. I think the coolest part is that there were photos of it on AP.
life changes…
