The Broncos on Tuesday waived safety Roderick Rogers, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.
Rogers, a second-year player from the University of Wisconsin, saw time in Denver’s last three games, starting in the team’s most recent loss to the Oakland Raiders. In the three games, he posted six tackles on defense along with two special-teams stops. He spent the first nine weeks of the season on the Broncos practice squad before he was signed to their active roster on Nov. 4.

as long as your cutting people let me ask you this,is calvin lowery still on the roster
So who are they gonna bring in to fill the void?
oh, and that might just be what josh barret needed. One week he gets signed to the active roster, and on the other they release a safety that just started a game? I hope he makes the most of his oportunity if it really presents itself. God knows how much we need a hard hitting safety back there!
One down, Three to go……
why your at it release lowry and manuel. let mccree and barrett start the rest of the yr. i dont care if barrett is a rookie we need a hard hitting safety. hes prolly better than whatever else we got.
heck lets give the job to barrett for the rest of the year i think he can get the job done. lets get healthy and play the rest of the season with a purpose i still believe in coach shanny and the broncos. go broncos
oh come on guys Woodyard at SS and there is noone on the roster that fits the FS bill !
i agree give the job to barrett the rest of the yr. and yeah woody at ss would be good.. lb core when healthy. dj webster winborn and woody and barrett at safeties.
Dudes, I totally agree…even if we hang on to win the AFC Worst, I really BELIEVE we’d be better served by investing in youth. By this I mean putting Woodyard (rec’d UK scholarship as safety) and Josh Barrett as our starting Safties…Woodyard @SS (4.5 speed), and Barrett @ FS (4.37speed). It would give us a great preview this year as to next year’s needs analysis. Do we really need to invest in a safety in the 1st 2 rounds, or focus on other key areas (LB,DT,DE,RB)? Any thoughts?
How about Lb D.J. Larsen, and Winborn
Be it via the draft or free agency, the Broncos defense will never be a dominating defense until they get a dominating DT. With a dominating DT, the ends are harder to control because the other teams offense has to shade towards the DT. With the ends freed up the pass rush is significantly better, the run defense is better and the other team has less time to throw the ball. The less time the other team has to throw the ball, the tighter the Corners and safties can play. This highly increases the likelyhood of interceptions. I hope Shanny takes a long, hard look at the best free agent DT. It’s highly unlikely that a rookie dominating DT will still be around when the Broncos draft, probably somewhwere in the 15th to 20th pick. But then, who’d have ever thought that Clady would still be around at number 12 (11?) this year?
PS If you want to see what a dominating DT can do, just watch the Jets DT the Sunday. He totally clogs up the middle on running plays and bull rushes very, very effectively on passing plays.
I agree with all of you that Woodyard and Barrett could be a great combination at safety. When it comes to the LB’s, I agree with 47rocksurworld.
As oldsouthstander said, most of our problems on defense will go away if we get a dominating DT. DT is the one position that can turn everything around for us on defense, especially if Woodyard and Barrett work out at safety.
GO BRONCOS!!!!
“Well golly I think we shud…xyz”
Woodyard’s not a safety, fools. No matter how good you happen to think he would be. You understand it’s an ENTIRELY different position, right?? An ENTIRELY different responsibility, right?? You understand this is PROFESSIONAL sports, right?? You understand your opinion is tiny and irrelevant, RIGHT??
U can stick to the blogging/b*tching and the coaches will do what they ARE PAID TO DO. Or maybe just sit back and enjoy the bumpy ride with the rest of us.
BTW what’s up with everyone’s boner for Barrett? He was burned in PS way more than any other player that I saw. Not saying he’s bad just green. Obviously he still has some issues or he would have been on the team w/ the rest of the rookies who are stepping up.
Oldsouthstander,
Couldn’t of said it better myself. Keep in mind we traded Holland, Colbert, and Foxworth all for mid draft picks. If we use some of our later picks to trade for a better pick. This season is not over but some experienced youth and some young talent could mean elite football status for the mile high.
i think we should try to get a DT and safety as our first and second picks
Shany screwed up big-time by cutting Hamza Abdullah, he could’ve been solid for us, and what’s the deal with guys going from starter to cut? I don’t understand the logic in that at all, but while we are in the cuttin’ mood get rid of Lowry, he’s slow as my grammy and he can’t form tackle, always goes for the big hit and gets faced.
Even if the Broncos do not win the division this year, I would love to see the young players getting time in the games. Experience is the best teacher and most of the young players have played well. The letdown against the Faiders was classic Broncos, as I believe they will give the Jets all they can handle. The Chargers, or Stumblers, seem to have as many problems as the Broncos and they face a harder schedule. All the experience by the rookies will pay off next year.
I’m usually not agreeable but Woody at SS would scare the pants off anybody in his territory. He is fast, can tackle and hits like a mack truck. Go Broncos!
Rogers has done a heck of a job thus far. Plenty of others could be cut in his place. AND he just started. Why not cut McCree or Manuel or Lowry? All three haven’t done much.
I like your post Colorado69…..looking at the glass half-full…
I too am puzzled by the Rodgers cut..I though it would be either Manuel or Lowry..
booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
MAN WE CANT EVEN BEAT THE RAIDERS AT HOME DOES IT REALLY MATTER ARE D’S A JOKE!!! WE BETTER TRY SOMETHING ELSE BECAUSE THE GUYS THAT WE HAVE ARE NOT GOOD AT ALL!!! NO PASS RUSH CANT STOP THE RUN!! CANT DEFEND AGAINST THS PASS!!! AND ARE OFFENCE CANT SCORE!! SO WHATS THAT SPELL (WE SUCK)
We should have kept Lynch? But since our “resident genius” and his “AWESOME” defensive coordinator didn’t why not have hard hitting Larsen there? On kick off coverage he knocked peoples helmets off. Reminds me of John Lynch. Lynch was never superfast but he did the job. Larsens not superfast but he could do it. Everyone is awed by speed. Well this isn’t a track meet or Tatum Bell would be a Super star and not sent to Detriot, cut and sit at the Sprint store selling Palm Centro cell phones. Jerry Rice was timed at his peak running a 4.5 forty? The game is played between the lines. That’s my 2 cents. The comment about the DT from oldsouthstander was right on. Did you notice when we had good DT’s we almost went to the superbowl and champ was getting 10 picks a season. 2005 ring a bell? Broncofan99 was right about cutting Lowery. That guy always gets RUN OVER? These turkeys aren’t John Lynch, Steve Atwater or even Austin Powers? Lol hey at least he had his MOJO! Lol
In 2005 our DTs were only slightly better than what we have now, the difference was in our Mike LB with AL being an absolute monster and John Lynch playing one of his best years on record that year he had half the teams sacks in 2005. Teams fear of Lynch and AL blitzing caused alot of picks that year as well as the fact that D-Will was one of the few corners good enough to be opposite Champ. Teams couldn’t pick on us in the passing game Champ and Will made them pay. No gents next years first round pick for Denver should and will be James Laurenitis out of Ohio State, this guysw skills are good enough to have been draftable his junior year instead he stayed to get smarter at the game and tune up a few things for this year. Second pick should be a RB for one simple reason we can not pass to win John bless his soul tried for years and got darn close but never got the big one until Terrell Davis could run the rock away from teams. Third pick should be a DT that is big somewhere around 6-4 330 or 340 that can clog up the middle while our smaller pass rushing DT Marcus Thomas shoots the gap. As far as getting a safety is concerned look for one in FA this is a position that few can play first year there just might be the fix in some of the cast offs or can’t pay ums. Until these things happen we are just a doormat for any team in the playoffs and that just saying that ol Shanny keeps his word.
kris jenkins is gonna kill us sunday lol.
Maybe this could be the beginning of many moves for getting a safety in the draft?
Good news, must be Barratt starting now and lets face it, even if he plays average for the rest of the season that will be an improvement on Manuel and Lowry!! He has a chance to cement his place not just for the end of this season but for many years to come.
Agree abouit Jenkins, he is exactly the sort of guy we MUST get a top DT or MLB early in this years draft.
couple points here:
1. why are a lot of you already giving up on the season, last time i checked we’re still 1st in the division, sure we got embarrassed last week but were still on top and still have room to improve, have faith, a lot of you are starting so sound like raider/cowboy/eagle fans (get rid of ___, we suck, blah blah)
2. obviously our biggest need to address in the draft is a safety, i disagree with getting a DT or MLB, because we have Larsen, he’s only played 2 games as a starter, give the guy time to prove something, and DT’s take time to develop, look at Dorsey and Ellis, both top 10 picks, both making little to no effect on their team this year.. give Thomas more time and see who we can get in free agency
well denver270 the team might “stink” but you cant spell. were ok guys still two games up
look i totaly agree that they couldve cut acouple different players b4 cutting rogers.but what i want to know is when is everyone going to stop blameing the players for everything[i know its there job and they have been playing most of there lives]and start looking at the coaches[and by this i mean slowik]our offense is good and next year will be great our d on the other hand is almost always out there looking confused and completely lost.they take bad angles to ball carriers or just plain outa position to me thats a coaching problem and untill that gets fixed we can only hope to finish tyhe season at 8-8 or more likely 9-7.
