The Broncos on Tuesday filled the roster spots vacated by placing Joe Mays and Dan Gronkowski on injured reserve.
The club added free agent tight end Daniel Coats and activated linebacker Lee Robinson from the practice squad.
Robinson spent the last eight weeks of the season on the team’s practice squad. The Alcorn State product saw time on the practice squads of Arizona and Tampa Bay in 2009.
Coats is a fourth-year player who totaled 30 receptions for 291 yards in 53 career games with the Cincinnati Bengals.

At least we will get to see some new faces on the field this weekend! Maybe even a little more Decker. Let’s hope Ayers is shaken all the rust off as well. Change is good! Especially when you get to play the Cardinals.
Yeah, I think the timing of the McD firing may have had something to do with easing Studesville into the job, can’t get much better than starting your HC interim career than against the Cards, it’s a big plus.
funny. i was thinking the same thing earlier today! rather fortuitous for studes i must say!
~Jingle Bells, Tebow sells, Orton played his way. Studesvilles got the wheel and BQ go-ot waived, hey~
Censored? Huh? Haha!!!!!!!! Oops. Sorry.
Yea, lets not get ahead of ourselves….There are no gimme games. And while rams are playing good football, there is ABSOLUTELY no reason we shouldnt have beaten em. So I think this hire/fire came RIGHT after we were mathematically out of the playoffs. Bowlen gave him the benefit of the doubt to possibly take us to playoffs, he didnt, plus everything that went on, this was just the time. Hope we beat the Cardinals, but we couldnt even beat the hapless 49ers….but that was under McD…I look forward to seeing this team play some inspired football for the next 4 weeks….All I wish is that Tebow could start…sigh….
I did watch the press conference live but I only found time now to comment on it. Here is what stuck out:
About what Studesville said, btw I am gonna call him Stud from now on to save my fingers:
-He will start Orton Sunday. Bummer but I can see why, start out with what’s familiar as it will be hard enough for him as is, but hopefully he will start Tebow soon after.
-He wants players to be happy to play AGAIN. Now that didn’t come as a shock to me but probably should to many here who kept telling us everything was fine and dandy between the players and McD. Yeah right….
-All coaches will retain their position and Mike McCoy will be calling the plays on O. Fine with me, I don’t really care who does what at this point, we all well know this is interim stuff in a long lost season and whoever is doing what at coaching now will have a very tough time being back next year.
-He also kept bringing up integrity and team, and what was different about it this time is he meant he was saying he has integrity and that’s what people would find out about him, unlike McD who only asked of others to have integrity but had none himself. Refreshing I thought.
And now much more importantly here is what stood out as far as what Ellis had to say:
-There was way too much authority given to McD and Ellis said he and Bowlen took the blame for it, and Ellis said they would review the entire organization ladder and will likely not do that again. Great.
-He also said McD essentially had final say in alll personel decision, and the new HC will most likely not be given personel decision power.
-He said Bowlen never has asked a coach to play a certain player and he wouldn’t start now, that includes Tebow.
-He said Elway has been with the organization for a while now in a consultant basis and they really don’t know now if it will go any further than that or not, but left the possibility open.
-About Xanders what he said was pretty telling, that he was told that he would remain on the job and would have to work his rear end off for the rest of the season and they would see where things are at at year end. Sounds to me the man will be gone, good.
-He said they really haven’t given any thoughts as to how and with who they would proceed with the interviewing process for any position as he said they have plenty of time to do so. Couldn’t agree more, no one would be hired until 4 or 5 weeks from now earliest, at least they did the hard part, cutting off ties with McD with two years remaining on his contract that it is reported Bowlen will pay in full.
No wonder McD left with such a big smile and thanked and praised everybody (except the fans)!!! Anyone here still feeling sorry for him??? LOL.
That’s all I got that was of some value to me in that conference.
point being they coulda sent in studeville against the rams as well…
Still not sold on Tebow. Want to see him play so we can put that argument to bed! Sign Champ too…
Having excoriated McD on here almost all season I too find it weird that he didn’t mention us in his final announcement.
Maybe he wasn’t aware of us!!
So Studesville says Orton is starting. Any views on our interim coach so far? Seems to me he is very personable and enthusiastic and will be a good motivator.
The other point is that in future the Head Coach will not have total control so I would interpret that as having a GM in charge of Football operations and he will have the ultimate control of player personnel.
Let’s not split hair on that, it’s a happy coincidence Stud’s first game is against the Cards, how about that, better?
Yeah we are definitely going the road of a legitimate GM up top, no way Bowlen would repeat that mistake twice.
Well if Orton is starting, he better play like his job depends on it. Oh wait, it does!
Or maybe Tebow is underprepared. The plot thickens!
It’s actually difficult to really come down hard on Bowlen for not hiring a genuine GM last year since he was used to have Shanny with all the powers for so long, but McD was a dangerous little man to give all these powers too as he soon found out, the Napoleon complex…
Thats cool with me bay, how it happened or when it did doesnt matter…just glad he did. I was just saying … and all i can say is what ellis said was a relief. I especially liked the part where they said he had final decisionon personel… I knew this, and when I blamed him for dumb stuff people where always like “stop blaming mcd, he doesnt make this decision, he is th head coach , blah blah blah blah” …. yeaaa right…
Sndvl,
I was a Tebow fan when he was in college and I just like the kid overall. Hard worker and a winner with great intangibles. Its hard to not root for the kid. Dunno if he is gonna be great (altho i believe he will) but if he isnt….he isnt…just another McD mistake but i would LOVE to see him play so that I know whats good going forward.
The only thing left I really care about this year is one way or another I need to know by season end if Tebow is the way to go or not, and only by starting him before season end will I get any shot at that, all the rest I really could care less, other than use as many rookies as possible for the same reason. Wins, losses, I don’t care about that anymore, I will just have fun watching this team with no McD on the sideline, that’s what really matters to me.
THANK YOU Mr.B.
so im thinkin the phone call McD was on as he was leaving dove valley was probably with belicheck and this is what he told McD…. “well done son. mission accomplished. bring it on home. there is no WAY they make the playoffs in the next 2 years!”
kinda funny, but kinda scary! could you imagine if he was rehired by the Pats next season? Conspiracy theories abound! lol
… also just a quick question…. if McCoy is calling offensive plays, Wink is calling defensive plays, and Burns (wait is he the special teams coach or just an assistant?) or who ever the special teams coach is, is calling the special teams plays… then what is Studes job? lmao jk …. a little. lol
Keep on buckin broncos (and fans)
OFFENSE WINS GAMES. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!
This was obviously a sudden but cumulative decision by Mr Bowlen because otherwise they would have more of a contingency plan for McD’s sacking in place. Fair enough the Stud’s in charge for the next 4 games but Mr Ellis didn’t appear to have much idea of what they should do next other than evaluate the situation etc etc.
Presumably this is just a fob off to the press because they must have some idea of the organisational structure needed. Well I hope so.
Stud said that he was sold on McD’s vision of the Broncos going forward. Funny how this was never communicated to the fans and we have no idea what this grand plan was. World domination by McD. That is the problem with putting too much power into one man’s hands.
I think that McD may have been waiting until next year to build the defense and in the meantime get by with veterans until then.
I hear you on all accounts rayjr26. I wondered the same thing everything u touched on.
If that was the case McDaniels was stupid. He had a very good offense when he came in…all he had to do was fix the D. He was brought in to win now, not in 3 years….if that was his plan it was very unwise…he woulda been better off building the d throught the draft (like his mentor) and by his third year they would be 2 year vets….
Time and time again the Stud said that the intention is to put the best product in front of the fans. The question is what is the best product.
I for one want to see Tebow play, and not just play but start. However once again we are being stymied by loyalty to players because of their stats, and Orton of course has great yardage this season. Unfortunately the stat that matters is that whilst he has made so many yards we have won so few games. So his efficiency level is in the toilet. Orton is McD’s man. He may be nice, but he is too nice and pretty much passionless with very little charisma. Not his fault, just the way he is.
What we need is a charismatic QB like Tebow. I just have a feeling that Tebow will be a great QB, and would improve our running game immensely. Vick proves how difficult it is to defend against dual threat QB’s and Tebow will be just that.
So Stud, my first piece of advice to you is go with Tebow, it really is Tebow time.
rayjr26- the way McD dismantled our organization, the thought crossed my mind as well…..time and time again.
Studseville just announced in a interview that OC Mike McCoy will call all plays on offense. Talk about trust. I like it.
Mr. B has spoken and I will support coach Stud and whoever the next coach is and not look back. I will always be cheering for victories. And I will be at the Cardinals game cheering on the Broncos Sunday. Go TEAM BRONCOS!
This move definitely got fans back on Mr B’s side…like you I am ready to fall in love with this team all over again. we have suffered and lost alot in the last year and a half, but whats done is done and im ready to move on and forget. With the end of the McDaniels era, comes the end of thinking of what we lost…just looking forward to the future and I have the utmost confiidence that after this coaching mistake, it wont happen again and I am really looking forward to the next season.
How on Gods Blue and Orange Earth does anyone think that Tebow is ready to start this year????
Josh never showed him the system, other than to teach him a swamp play here and there…
As far as I’ve read, Tebow has been running the scout team and is in no way ready to play in McD/McCoys system!
DO NOT THROW TEBOW TO THE WOLVES THIS WEEK OR NEXT OR EVEN THE REST OF THE YEAR!
We know what we paid and what the kid did in college! That is enough insight and investment for us to hold off on throwing the kid in the fire!
Let TT start next year when he’s had all off season and pre-season to learn the new coaches system!!!!!!!!!
Lets see what BQ has to offer and/or let Orton complete the season that was spent on him in the SYSTEM he knows soo well….
After the last game of this season, we need to begin to BUILD THIS TEAM AROUND TEBOW!
We must hire a coach that wants to believe in going forward with Tebow.
WE “us fans” bought the jerseys and made TT the most popular player and we expect to see our guy have a FAIR chance to succeede as our Bronco QB of the future. Not to see him get thrown to the wolves at the end of a miserable season using a system he will never need to know.
ILMSDB!
SAVE TEBOW!!!!!!!!! for next year/coach/system.
Since the Arizona game is supposed to be the easiest game left on the schedule, wouldn’t it be the perfect time to start Tebow?
LMAO @ Bay’s 4:58 post.
SIGN CHAMP!!!!!!!
I need to know if Tebow is going to be the franchise QB we traded 3 draft picks to get,how will we know if we don’t play him.We can’t get rid of Orton and rely on a QB with no experience, and don’t even know if he can cut the mustard or not.I think Orton has to go,but who will replace him if Tebow flops,I guess we can trade for one, cause Quinn ain’t the answer either.
I never left Mr B’s side….
I’ve always enjoyed being a fan with a team who’s owner is also the greatest fan of a team we mutually love.
Mr Bronco has never let me down…
I really thought Josh was going to be a great coach at one time also. We live and we learn.
bay, I really dug your perspective and insight you gave on your 4:47pm post.. nice!
I knew MR.B would do the right thing, that’s why he is and always will be the best owner in the NFL,cause he cares about us,the fans, thanks MR.B.
I really like this guy. I just get a good vibe from him. One thing that i did take away though from his predd confrence was that he said that everyone including TT will be evaluated. The only way to evaluate players is to play them. He knows that this season is gone just like everyone else does. I would look for Tebow the day after Christmas at home against the Texans to be his first game and have him play the last 2 home games
OC…buddy you just made me shed a little orange and Blue tear…
BFE, I don’t think it would be fair to throw TT out there with no training and try to judge him on that performance. Thats not fair, you cant get an accurate assesment of his tallent if he is not prepared well in this system. McD said it himself, that he hasen’t even thought about getting Tebow into this system….
It’s just not a fair assesment of this kid and would be totally unfair of us to judge weither he can succeed in the future if he can somehow be Superman Sunday…..
It is not fair on this kid to say play him now and I will decide if he is good enough for us next year in a completely different system with a completely different coach. jomho
Cant believe honestly oh well good Luck McDaniels I will still be a fan (unless you come back and play against us lol). I dont agree with this decision but oh well I hope it works out for the best.
GO BRONCOS
OC,what do we do with Orton, not knowing if Tebow can do the job(i’m sure he can tho) we don’t wanna be without a legitimate QB,I do see your point tho!
Quinn is a big bust,so if we trade Orton,Tebow will have to play,I guess we will have to wait and see if everything pans out,IDK.
The next HC might wanna keep Orton, the only way I’d keep him is in a backup role, and he’s worth more to trade!
I’m pretty sure McD will go back to zoneblocking,so it will take a lot of the load off Tebow.I’d like to see some kind of spread Offense like Tebow ran in Florida, maybe we will get a good OC that can utilize Tebow’s talent. With Moreno and Lendale White both playing next year with zoneblocking, lookout!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!!
GRUDEN LOVES TEBOW!
I think we already own Orton and Tebow for next year but BQ is history.
That leaves the next coach with an expected starter in Tebow and a solid backup in Orton.
jomho
It’s funny OC because as you know you spent the whole first part of the year saying we ABSOLUTELY HAD TO START TEBOW right away because that’s what we did with Elway and look how it turned out, and you even had the home game against the Raiders as the date you projected Tebow would start….. and then as time went by you pulled a 180 and started saying please don’t play Tebow now, Josh will ruin him, and now Josh is gone and you still don’t want to see your boy Tebow…. I mean I know we can all change our minds but man are you good at it, like you used to call yourself the Joshkateer, he was the man and he was gonna get us to the promise land and then, 180, Josh must go, and it was really nice of you to come clean and say how wrong you were when you changed your mind but it’s just that when you say stuff like that I have to take it with a grain of salt because it’s impossible to know how you will think later on, like what if in the off season we get a coach who prefers Orton over trying Tebow, then all we will have done is wasted a chance at seeing what Tebow can actually do as a starter now, this is THE BEST OPPORTUNITY BAR NONE, unlike you I think we can only be smarter and more knowledgeable about Tebow for the future if we start him now, and Brady Quinn, please if he starts I will have to cancel my membership, LOL. It’s all cool, to each his own, whatever makes us tick but I had to say something since not wanting to play Tebow this year is to me as much out there as thinking that McD was the real deal. Plus on the other blog you just disagreed with me about Elway not being legitimate GM material yet, I just had to get back at you, LOL.
wouldnt say fans left his side but many were questioning if he was losing his sanity in old age, or if he was even behind anything anymore with his health issues.
As far as tebow goes…start him…i still believe in it. We wont evaluate him SOLELY on this year. He is a rookie starting for the first time, whether u are an expert in the system or not their will be some growing pains…I just wanna see his decision making skills and how he reads defenses and the simple stuff. When u sink a first rounder in a QB…4 or less games inst enough to say ok he wont work out but its enough to EVALUATE where to move forward from. We need to see him against NFL level competition…not that preseason crap we already saw. I still say start him. Just me however…either way like i said, I am really excited about next season…never liked McD and Im glad he is gone…
And now you say something nice about me, LOL. Ok, I therefore retract the previous post, haha.
I agree, we should try to build this team this off season, and probably the one after that too, to fit the strengths of Tebow because he IS the future until he shows that he can’t play. Personally though, i think he will be a star
Sorry but if Tebow isn’t coached to start after all this time then how long will it take. A lot of other rookie QB’s have had a baptism of fire this season so why not Tebow?
I have faith in Tebow and a lot of people are waiting with baited breath for him to be given a chance.
Playing football has only a relatively short lifespan and if Tebow is as good as I hope he is it would be criminal for him not to get as many games as possible. The Broncos signed him to play not to sit on a bench as back up.
TEBOW TIME!
I agree with TRBs assessment starting Tebow. We know what we have in Orton. He’s hit his ceiling. Not a bad thing at all in my opinion. But this is Tebow talk. Lol.
It should also be mentioned that Tebow is a lefty. Wouldn’t it make sense for Moreno to ‘feel’ some game time handoffs from the lefty? How about the WRs? You have to think the trajectory on the spiral is different with a lefty? O-line? Weakside is now on the right. Right? It would not be a bad thing to get film? Let Tebow break it down? How about evaluating his throwing motion? How the unit operates when blitzing. I may be wrong, but it’s such an overlooked fact that he’s a lefty.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still an Orton fan. And he is stand up character. I think he would welcome the competition. Haha!
Give Tebow some time. Let the new coach sort it out….GO BRONCOS!!!
Has Denver ever had a lefty QB?
Another thing I look forward to a blogger on the DP reminded me of, call me old fashion if you want but I hope Studs comes out on the field looking sharp leading our team, no more hoodies, dress well, look sharp, feel sharp, play sharpe! Seems like it would be a good way to start.
Ya in Shannys early days as Hc. I forgot his name. He broke a leg playing baskerball of all things. Shanny cut him after that.
Ok well, if I had to guess what they are doing, I’d say they are going to give Tebow an increase in playing time over the next 2 road games and we will start him come December 26th against Houston and their last ranked pass D haha. I think that they want Tebow to be in a non-hostile environment for his first start, not only that, but I believe they think it will be better for attendance purposes and just him in general. I honestly don’t mind that idea, but if Tebow has no starts come the end of the season I will be even more disappointed in this season than I already am!
