Resting Before The Stretch Run

October 21st, 2009 - 3:29pm by Chris Gentilviso

For the next four days, the Broncos and football will have a chance to be separate entities.

After holding a film study on Wednesday morning, Head Coach Josh McDaniels released the players to embark on their bye-week break.

The team will have the time to rest and recuperate before resuming practice in preparation for the Ravens on Monday.

“We made some corrections today and talked about things we didn’t do very well in the game and tried to put that game behind us,” McDaniels said. “Now we’re moving on and the coaching staff’s going to do a few things here in the next few days and get ready for the next 10 weeks.”

Bye weeks don’t always occur at the same juncture. McDaniels said that he’s been a part of bye weeks where practice has been held, and ones where it hasn’t. He’s had bye weeks appear on the schedule as early as Week 2, and ones much later than Week 7.

Regardless of when the respite arrives, there is one key task at hand.

“You do really want to take a look at your football team and what you’ve done during the bye week, and then try to use that information to go forward and make some improvements and adjust things that need to be adjusted,” McDaniels said.

The Broncos will be an active part of that adjustment process on their own time. McDaniels had told the team prior to Wednesday that they would have some time off.

Despite a 6-0 start, Ronald Fields plans to use his break to target bigger goals.

“We’ve still got a lot more fighting to do,” Fields said. “This is just the beginning. It still doesn’t put us in the playoffs or anything like that, so we’ve got a lot to fight for.”

I like that the Broncos are getting some time off and getting some RR before the home stretch of the season. Up to this point nothing we have done matters, its all about how we play from here on out.

    Go Broncos!

  2. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

I just know our coaching staff will have us in the right direction during this bye week so all is well in Bronco Nation

  3. markymarkuss777 says:

Our players need to go and have a professional massage done, sit in a hot tub, eat some healthy foods and drinks, and then come back to practice on monday in tip top shape. Especially Dawkins, that scared me when he almost pulled a hamstring last game. Get the muscles worked out guys!

  4. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

HA!!!! I just heard something HILARIOUS, Richard Seymour just Garunteed the RAIDERS to go to the Playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Now thats a funny joke!!!

  5. theotheredge says:

Any updates on injuries? Is Haggan ok? How is Dawkins Hami? Jack Williams? Anyone else Im missing? Oh yeah, when is Larsen due back? I thought the shoulder injury was only supposed to keep him out 4-6 weeks?

  6. whitebronco#1 says:

    Peyton…22 (sorry, too long)…

Did you hear in how many years or decades is that going to happen? Maybe you didn’t got all the speech.

I don’t know what I’m going to do with my bye week. Maybe a short trip, maybe sleep all I can, or maybe (most probable) I’ll watch some games and I’ll cheer for the NFC teams… it would be nice if STL beat INDY and KC beat SD, but yeah, just wishful thinking.

    Go Broncooos!

  7. footballMANIAC says:

theotheredge- Dawkins and Haggan are fine; both returned to the game in the second half, which McDaniels wouldn’t do unless they were ok to play. Not sure on Williams, I think it was his ankle, and Larson should be back after the bye.

  8. Marshallman-15 says:

I haven’t been a football person for over 3 years, so that’s why I ask weird questions sometimes, but how long has it been since we won in Qualcomm?

Who else noticed how much of a difference Dawkins made on the field? When he went out, Phillip Rivers Cuomo went surprisingly good for a few minutes.

  9. florio's_mom says:

    LOL McD is a midget!!!

  10. baylinorcrush says:

MM 15, final game of the 2005 season, we won there 23-7.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

Depends how you look at it, you could say Marshall is a beast so McD looks pretty normal, maybe it’s because you look like Marshall that you call him a midget?

  12. tjnartw says:

I think that Seymore was meaning that they were going to buy tickets to a game or 2. LOL I typed this already and then tried to submit but then it told me to slow down because I was posting to fast. what is that all about? They must think I can type fast or something. LOL.

I’m watching the Falcons whip up on Cutler on NFL Network replay. I loved that game.

    GOOOOOOOOOO BRONCOS

  13. baylinorcrush says:

tjnartw, it usually says that when you’re trying to post while somebody else is in the process of posting, it can only process one post at a time.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

I don’t know about you guys but I’m sure glad this retro yellow/brown couple of weeks are behind us, love to see the website back in its regular blue and orange and will look forward to our regular road unis next Sunday.

  15. tjnartw says:

TSM Baylinorcrush, I guess I’ll have to watch it from now on and not post when someone else is posting at the same time. LOL The Broncos areon right after the Falcons-Bears Game. I know, I know, I watched it on Monday Night but it’s been so long since Denver beat the Chargers that I just have to watch it again.

Does any one know how many picks Cutler has thrown this season compared to t.d.s? I think it’s just about tied. I have a bet with a coworker that he’ll have more picks than t.d.s this year.

Ok, I’m ready to post, give me room. LOL GO BRONCOS

  16. baylinorcrush says:

    Cutler so far 10 TD’s 7 INT’s

  17. baylinorcrush says:

    Orton 9 TD’s 1 INT(hail mary)

  18. tjnartw says:

thanks, Baylinorcrush, now answer me this. would anyone know if an onside kick ball has to touch the ground before it is considered a live ball. One source that I’ve talked to says that it is a live ball no matter if it hits the ground or not, another source says it has to hit the ground first or the other team has all rights to the ball.

  19. tjnartw says:

Did anyone else notice how fast David Bruton is? I watched both of Eddie’s returns again tonight and Bruton actually catches up with Eddie and makes it look easy.

  20. beastlybroncs says:

An onside kick does not have to touch the ground to be a live ball.

  21. beastlybroncs says:

As long as it travels 10 yards.

  22. beastlybroncs says:

I cant wait to see our defense go up against the ravens defense.go broncos

  23. baylinorcrush says:

We saw in pre-season Bruton will be someone to reckon with when his time comes. Bruton the brute.
Yeah beastly is correct all it takes is for the ball to travel 10 yards, it doesn’t matter if it rolls there or it’s on the fly.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

The guy who thinks it has to hit the ground is just confusing the fact that most kickers will make it hit the ground real early so the ball flight becomes unpredictable and harder for the opposite team to come up with it clean. Therefore as it’s what we see most the time, he assumed it has to hit the ground to be a legal onside kick, but no.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

I can’t believe my trivia question earlier today didn’t trigger any reaction, I mean any time I bring it up, people are usually very surprised. You tell me, Rick Upchurch dating Condolezza Rice back in the 70′s when he was a Bronco is not mind boggling?

  26. baylinorcrush says:

You can see this is the bye week, even the bloggers took it off, LOL.

  27. florio's_mom says:

I stood right next to McD at training camp. I’m 5’5. i was taller than him. lol

  28. baylinorcrush says:

florio, maybe you where standing on a step next to him, he is listed at 5’10″, 160 lbs.

  29. Wildman347 says:

baylinorcrush; Condolezza Rice said he was not Intellectual enough for her. I think it worked out for the best, she is a (expletive deleted) and he is a really cool guy. Not to mention his wife was alot of fun to be around also.
I saddens me that I have to rant again about this but…
IT IS NOT BRONCOS NATION…. That is a Raider thing!
This Is BRONCOS COUNTRY. I drives me insane when I read it.
    Sorry for the pout.

    This is Broncos Country!!!

  30. c$prings_rai$ed says:

baylinocrush……….your’e a funny dude!!!!!!!!!!!! I read yalls posts all the time, at least for the past year and occasionally speak my mind but have recently stopped for getting kicked off the blogs????

Anyway I am extatic (not sure if I spelled that right?) and amazed of how good our broncos are doing. With all the changes I thought we would be either really good or really bad and Mcdaniels would be looking for another job after the season. This is just a great feeling, my pops made me a diehard, been watching these boys since I was a baby (only 26 now) and I have a feeling that our generation is going to have some history to speak about along with our 97′ 98′ talk . Gotta give love to the original BRONCOS of our time.

Balimore…..Baltimore??? I have been living in bmore for the past 6 yrs. now and haven’t been back home to Csprings since (it’s really actually depressing) just recently got DirectTV so I have been watching the ravens play for the past few seasons.

This is going to be a tough matchup but I am very confident we can pull out another W….if we don’t I swear I won’t hear the end of it at the office.

COME ON BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!! SMASH UP DEM PURPLE CROWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. c$prings_rai$ed says:

Wildman347 you know that’s probably just a bandwagon faider fan!!! If your’e a true BRONCS fan you know this is absolutley 100% BRONCOS COUNRTY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean unless you have never been to CO just look at the landscape!!!!

    BRONCO$ COUNTRY 4 LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  32. florio's_mom says:

Are you kidding me?!? I heard he was 5’7. I was standing right next him and not on a hill.

Man, i gotta be famous so some one will give a couple more inches.

    florio’s_mom: 6’1?????

  33. beastlybroncs says:

Im not much of a ron jaworski fan but i loved it monday night when he kept saying FEED THE BEAST,FEED THE BEAST.I love it. 6-0 BABY. GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. beastlybroncs says:

My 13 year old son is a huge Champ Bailey fan.He plays left corner on his junior high team. His # you guessed it 24.he has 7 picks this year and one of them was a pick six.He loves the phrase FEED THE BEAST.

  35. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

I thought Rasheed Wallace’s guarantees about the Pistons winning in the NBA playoffs were stupid until I heard Richard Seymour’s take about the Faiders. Please, Richard, Ryan Clady OWNED you as you had to resort to pulling his dreads like a punk. The Broncos are only going to improve and we will matter once the postseason starts. Watch out for us NFL, here we come. GO BRONCOS!!!

  36. broncosfreak30 says:

It is soo funny if you watch the speech that McDaniels gives about the bye week. Go to the very end of it and he talks about how our boys and the gay bolts were out on the field up in each others faces before the game. He also talked about how it was the same way with Oakland. I love how he simply put it, “Its the AFC West, were not supposed to like Oakland, San Diego, or Kansas City, I see nothing wrong with it, its football.”
I am so glad that McD is our Man!!!
    Represent those Denver Broncos Baby!!

    GOOOO BROOONNNCCOOOSSS!!

  37. denpowerhouse says:

With the Broncos being 6-0 now after monday night in SD, what i find more hilarious then Richard Seymour saying the raiders are going to the play-offs, is our own sports writers in denver not picking the broncos to win in SD. I really dont think they have a clue what kind of team the broncos really are. Then after they win another game, they ( our sports writers ) then turn around and write why the broncos won. WHATS UP WITH THAT ? Well here is some facts for our next game. After a bye week the broncos are 15-5 / .750 tied 3rd best in the league. They have won 5 of there last 6 games after a bye week. So our next game should be a good one. One more thing, the look on phil rivers face of SD after the game on monday night, PRICELESS. GO BRONCOS— 7-0 LOOKS GOOD TO ME.

  38. brian_schneider says:

It is really nice to not have the injury bug bite us too much this season. (knock on wood) It seems that we have a bit more toughness to our guys and one thing is the conditioning. Our guys seem to play at a high level throughout the entire game and not get too winded.
Hope the players take some personal time too, but at the same time remain focused. I think they will, they have so far and I’m sure the staff will make sure that their ready to go after the bye.
I’m still at a crossroad..I have BMarsh & Baltimore D on my FF-Team. Man this could be a rough week for me.

  39. baylinorcrush says:

denpowerhouse, with all due respect, the fact that we won 5 of the last 6 games after a bye week means absolutely diddly as you know as well as I it was under the Shanahan regime. If we do win, it will be because of how McD prepares for it which is a complete flip flop from how Shanny prepared for it. Same for the 15-5 after the bye week record, Shanny accounts for 14 of those games. So all your facts about our next game are out the window in my opinion. Stats are ok for killing time, but to use these stats in particular for a crytsal ball on the next game is just plain… whatever, you get my drift.

  40. BroncoWildKansan says:

Yeah using stats is hard with our team this year. I mean if Josh had been the head coach for the last 10 years then they would fly, but until then it is very hard to compare our team to any previouse Broncos Team. You would be better at looking at Belicheks Stats and compairing them to Josh than the previouse Broncos. If you do that it is an even more impresive record. Something like 82% after the Bye. I guess we shall see what happens in a week and a half. What I like is that the guys are getting a much deserved week of rest close to the middle of the season. We still have 10 out of 16 games left to play. We can’t write anyone out of the race yet. I can’t be more proud of our boys at 6-0, but their is still a lot of football to play. For a while there we talked about a lot of us blogers who either were in the military or are in the military, and the reason I brought this up early in the season was because I really liked the way Josh was making “The Broncos Team one UNIT.” (Complimentry Football) Call it what ever you want, but watching Coach McD miced shows how he runs his games like a General in the Trenches with his men. He fights for calls, seeks explanations on strange calls, rips into someones a$$ when they don’t take care of their job and rewards the TEAM when they come out on top. Call it a Man Crush, but I like this Coach and the “Team he Built”

  41. Broncfalls says:

    Go Broncos!

Take a break and rest up, it’s almost time for the final push!

On a side note: With no Bronco football to watch, if you want to watch a game with good story lines check out the BEARS vs. BENGALS!

I live outside of Chicago and Ocho Cinco is BLOWING UP! his twitter page. It’s been hilarious. It’s one of the top story lines in Chicago. Furthermore, you have Cedric Benson who was cut by Chicago because he was “not productive” as they called it.

In the meantime, Chicago sports radio is trying to make every excuse possible on how this is still a playoff calliber team.

Lastly, as I was driving listening to this sports radio, a caller called in and called himself an “Orton-onian”! Priceless!

    Rest up boys!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  42. brian_schneider says:

Interesting how two “not productive” “not franshise” “not good” players come out of Chicago and go to different teams and become successful. Hmm with Knox taking over Hester’s return duties, and taking some of his receptions away, Hester is going to want out.

  43. tnalen66 says:

The Bears got 2 wins cuz the other teams kickers misses multible kicks other wise they would be 1-4.(Lions at home). I hope Cincy kickes their butts.Remember we get their 1st rounder.

  44. bill II says:

Hey! Anyone out there know what color uniform the Broncos will be wearing when we play the Ravens??????????? HaHa.

  45. beastlybroncs says:

I hope chicago loses every game they play.It makes for a higher pick for us next year.

  46. denpowerhouse says:

baylinorcruch, with all due respect i was just looking at stats from the broncos as a whole and yes i was just killing time, so sorry guy’s . Let me be a little more clear on what i ment if you dont mind. The stats that i was talking about still stands in my opinion for the simple reason is, 1, yes shanny accounts for those, and yes one thing clear is shanny and mcd are quite different coaches as well as the broncos ( then and now ) but when you look at stats , you have to look at everything, playing early, late, playing on the east coast, west coast, playing games in the nfc vs afc. When josh mcd was with the PATS, they dident win every game as i dont think the broncos will win every game. ( i would like to see it happen ) but not a chance . Getting back to stats, even Mcd looks at stats from old games to get ready for up comming games. So i dont think i was looking to deep in my crytsal ball ( lol ) when i was bringing up stats . Hope i did not afend anyone . just killing time. GO BRONCOS.

  47. royalbroncofan1 says:

Sorry I missed your trivia question baylinor ! I knew the answer.

Hey I’ve got one – Who was the last player to score a TD on ST before Royal last Monday?

  48. footballMANIAC says:

royalbroncofan1- Wasn’t it Sproles? I know that Hester was the one before that (against Denver).

  49. baylinorcrush says:

denpowerhouse, of course no offense taken, I was just mentionning those stats had no correlations to next Sunday’s game, that’s all. Now, all the stats that the Ravens have put up this year will be worth looking at closely because they will have a direct impact on how McD will incorporate them into his preparation for the game, but what Shanny did in the past after the bye week, McD may or may not know about it, but he certainly wouldn’t care a thing about it. Remember, he is his own man and has learned everything from Belichick as he always says and I can assure you he wouldn’t look at what Shanny did in order to learn anything about how to run his football team. So here we go again, you where stating stats that are totally irrelevant. You are just killing time with stats as you say, but you could kill your time more efficiently picking better stats to get to your conclusion that next game should be a good one. By the way, I wasn’t sarcastic about the with all due respect thing, it is simply my way to tell you I strongly disagree with something you said, but I don’t think you’re a bad person for it. I’m just pointing out to your misguided information, what you do with it is up to you. This is what I’ll always do here, speak my mind about what I believe about our Broncos, it will not always be right for everyone, if ever, but I’m not here to win a popularity contest, so be ready to hear from me from time to time when something sticks out like a sore thumb. And I expect the same in return from all the bloggers who wish to do so. That’s what grown ups do in this world, discuss things so we all learn from eachother, otherwise if somebody’s education was solely his own point of view, we would all be in a serious quagmire.

  50. baylinorcrush says:

No, I bet he means the last Bronco to score one.
