With their 53-man roster in hand, and a regular season opener with the Cincinnati Bengals next up on their calendar, the Broncos put in a full practice on Tuesday at Dove Valley.
Here are some quick hits from the session:
That full roster included three quarterbacks: Kyle Orton, Chris Simms and Tom Brandstater. Each actively participated in the opening drills.

Joining Knowshon Moreno in an orange jersey reserved for players recovering from injury was Jabar Gaffney. Gaffney missed the final preseason game against the Cardinals, but was catching balls in several drills run by wide receivers coach Adam Gase.

Besides catching balls, the wide receivers partook in 1-on-1 drills with the cornerbacks. The receivers worked on their first step, while the defensive backs looked to stop them in their tracks within the first five yards of legal contact.

In the final two preseason games, Brian Dawkins recorded six tackles and two passes defensed — with a large wrap on his injured hand. On Tuesday, Dawkins practiced without any wrap in his way.

New numbers: With roster cutdowns complete, several players switched up their uniforms. The rundown on the regular 53-man roster includes Russ Hochstein (71), Le Kevin Smith (97) and newcomer Vonnie Holliday (99)., who was on the field Tuesday. Players switching numbers on the practice squad are Tony Carter (25), D.J. Johnson (29), Braxton Kelley (52) and Everette Pedescleaux (93).
Here are some more photos from the session.

so I was playing Madden and if you listen to Collinsworth he says that BMarsh reminds him of a young T.O I thought it was funny because of everything that Marshall has done this off season.
They’ve always called him Baby TO cuz of his size and skills not to mention he is just a flat out entertainer….We never thought the negative side of TO was also in Marshall. Madden just trying to add some realism of what announcers would say lol.
Marshall isnt a bad guy and hopefully the negatives that followed TOs whole career wont happen to marshall. Like I said, this has been a wild offseason and its brought out the worst in people on both sides of the feuds but with the regular season about to start….and with things on the line…I think we are all just ready to move on and get back to good ol football…..ESPN has been more like TNT (we know drama lol) this off season.
Marshallman-15, ha, ha, no. Don Henley’s song is one I use often when it comes to explaining the media. Besides, that’s a song from my era. Easy to remember and assimilate into a situation.
I’m glad we kept Loyd and what a catch he made to prove why we kept him.
Sorry LLoyd (miss spelling).
Yea…lets hope him and orton still have some risidual chi town chemistry lol
broncos20: Isn’t Cedric Benson, the former Bears RB, who got hurt against us a couple of years ago in ’07? He found new life with the Bengals.
At any rate, you’re right about Stacey Andrews. First round pick Andre Smith was hurt first week after he finally signed with them.
They also have converted DT Jason Shirley playing OT now.
Not sure if he is ready to start. I know they’re featuring the Bengals this year on “Hard Knocks”. They have some big lineman in Cincy but they did give up 30 sacks last year, three times the amount they gave up the year before. The O line struggled with running game and have not averaged above 3.7 yards a carry since ’05. Carson Palmer is a pocket passer and he likes to play an up-tempo game.
Here’s a listing of the Bengals O line:
LT Andre Whitworth 6-7 330 lbs
LG Nate Livings 6-5 335 lbs
C Kyle Cook 6-3 306 lbs
RG Bobbie Williams 6-4 345 lbs
RT Anthony Collins 6-5 317 lbs or Andre Smith 6-4 332 lbs.
Last year all of the critics were putting down the Broncos before the season started, and then we came out looking strong. I think we’re going to surprise alot of people again this year too, and I know we’ll finish with stronger heart than we did last year (individual games and the season).
One of those critics, Michael Fabiano, had this entry in one of his fantasy blogs:
I need to start two running backs in Week 1. Steve Slaton is a lock, but I’m not sure who to start from Larry Johnson, Cedric Benson and Jamal Lewis. Thanks! — S. Buchholz, Rapid City, S.D.
M.F.: Based on the matchups, I like Benson ahead of Johnson and Lewis. Johnson is on the road against the Ravens, while Lewis faces the Vikings at home. Benson, on the other hand, has a home game against a Broncos defense that will be this season’s NFL version of swiss cheese. Denver was ranked 27th against the run in 2008, and the unit didn’t improve much in the offseason. I wouldn’t expect Benson to put up huge numbers, but he’s definitely a viable starting option this weekend.
Swiss cheese??? Yeah right. There’s other teams out there that are worse off than we are (we can ALWAYS count on OAK for that). Besides, we’ve got Dawkins back in the huddle to get things straight.
GO BRONCOS!
Finally, a new blog.
Go Lulu!
I think Moreno won’t play this sunday for security reasons, and Marshall will play just in a few plays.
I think we’ll get this W in Cincy, but sure it’ll be hard. Not only their D is quite better than last year, also Palmer seems at full.
And that comment from Fabiano… I always try to keep cool with the media BS, but this one did pissed me off bad! Swiss Cheese?… yeah, sure, like if it was about his brains! That’s cheese!… so now I see why he’s the FANTASY “expert”. He lives in that world.
Go Broncooos!
What about ray malaluga is he going to play?
It’s nice to have Orton back and it’s obvious McDaniels plans to have him start at the Natti. There have been lots of stupid Bengals fans talking junk about what they’ll do to us, both on message boards and on national radio, such as Jim Rome’s radio show. I give Cincy fans fair warning, you cheer for the Bengals, therefore you suck. In any case, let’s play our game and all will be well. GO BRONCOS!!!
maybe the whole marshall thing was a scam??? u know how ne did things..maybe they were hustlin the league…playin possum with brandon…watch him have 19 catches…3 tds..lol..yeah..i hope he is ready…i really did like him….but he will never be a Rod smith..or mcCaffery..team players..
The swiss cheese one was bad but the biggest insult is when anyone says broncos Pukes laughs thats just not cool.
Hey DD,
that was some good rythm..certainly sticks in my head..lol..you should make a chant for the fans for home games..ahah..
royalbroncofan1,
yeah, it is Benson. I was just angered reading up his(Fabiano’s) posts.Fool!!. We’ll see who’s the fool come the last turn of the season.
and thanks for their O-line info, those are some huge bodies indeed. I think Doom will call their numbers out..yeah!!
hey to all the Madden people
Im in my 1st year Franchise with the Broncos. Its week 8 and im playing thr Ravens. I am 6-0 so far. Orton is 107-151 with 1380 yards, 16 TD and 3 INTs with a rating of 126.2 Moreno has 554 yards on 97 rushes and 6 TDs. Our leading reciever is Royal with 38 Receptions for 435 yards and 7 TDs. (BTW, Brandon Marshall has 35 receptions for 353 yards and 5 TDs =]) Brian Dawkins is leading in tackles with 19. Darrell Reid leads in Sacks with 8 and Champ Bailey leads in INTS with 3
Our Defense has only allowed 201 yards rushing and lead the NFL in INTS with 11.
Oh and for the people who think Im playing on Rookie, iM actually playing on All-Pro. Working my way up to All-Madden.
Knowshon27…. the answer to your question about rey malaluga (or however you spell it) is he is starting at OLB.
dlmyers
“I really hope that Rod Smith did some good with Brandon when they practiced together last week.”
While I wish it was true that Rod and Brandon were together last week, I find it had to believe it’s true and nobody on any network said a word about it. Just where did you get this tidbit from? Got pictures? Don’t mean to badmouth you, but there’s so many unsubstantiated rumors floating around about BM and the Bronco that unless it’s an offical press release from the Broncos, I find anything said hard to believe.
Marsh you’re a youngster if you don’t recognize those words and instantly the melody. The money line is now +205 I will take the Broncos to win
oldsouthstander,
Actually he is right about Marshall meeting with Rod. It was not a practice but they just held a conversation. None of them spoke with the media following that conversation. I happened to read about it last week but lost the link. I think Marshall attended Rod Smith’s induction ceremony into a certain football hall of fame (forgot what the name of it was) and after held a conversation with Rod.
Now thats a funny face from Coach Gase! lol………im sorry it just jumped out at me
The_Ink
I was thinking the same thing as I came across the picture. Lol
oldsouthstander, I also had read that Rod and Brandon hooked up about a week ago. dlmyers was speaking from what we all read. Same as BB19, I can’t recall the links that I got it from, but I read it on more then one article. It was shortly after his suspension.
I found the link. http://cbs4denver.com/sports/nfl.denver.broncos.2.1160551.html
Didn’t mean for the words to spread out like that. The link caused it.
Dont worry Brandon Bailey, you’ll work your way up to All Madden.. Use dot be a Madden fiend back in the days but I barely played 08 and didnt play 09 at all so im like a year removed…Just got Madden 10 2 days ago but i refuse to play on anything less than all madden lol…..still living in the flory days lol,,,,Just make sure you do them Broncos proud lol
I represent the Broncos proud TheRoyalBeast, been a Broncos fan since my days in the womb. lol
My Defense is #1 in the league in INTs. I just played Week 8 and Week 9. Week 8 was against the Ravens(38-3 W) and Week 9 was against the Steelers (38-7 W) The Steelers were undefeated before i played them and they scored their only touchdown with 1:22 left in the 4th Qtr so I almost had the shutout.
TheRoyalBeast,
Yeah working my way to All-Madden. I have had Madden 2010 since the day it came out. I tried to make the jump from Pro to All-Madden but got discouraged after seeing Tom Brady kill the Broncos defense so I went to All-Pro to sharpen up my skills before trying All-Madden again.
DD
Thanks for the link. Interesting how Pukes, et al never said a word about this. Guess they believe that old adage that only bad news sells. I caught just a few minutes of an ESPN special and Clayton was standing up for the Broncos and said that they were a lot better than people were giving them credit for. He pointed out that we have one of, if the best, offensive lines in pro ball. I don’t know or really care what their record will be this year. All I want to see is the way the Broncos were, except for the last few years, a highly competitive team that you knew was going to fight you tooth and nail every second of the game.
Does anyone know is KNOWSHON MORENO is going to play?
IBAILEY_24:
KnoMo was wearing an orange practice jersey yesterday, meaning he was out there practicing but no one could hit him.
The fact that he is practicing tells me he will probably play, but be limited for his first game. He may even start, but they will rotate him out frequently so that they do not aggravate his injury.
This is all speculation, however. No one knows if he will play except for the coach. And he is not telling anyone!
ANYONE AGREES THAT HOLLIDAY WILL BOOST UP OUR D-LINE!!!
HOLLIDAY + D-LINE = DUMERVIL IN PALMERS FACE ALL NIGHT
I really hope that Brandon Marshal knows what he’s doing out there. I hope that he’s focused enough to play the game right.
IBAILEY_24
I think that Doom would be in Palmer’s face even if Holliday wasn’t on the team.
But, Holliday does add some good pressure and veteran leadership, so I think it’s a good signing. Now, where will he play, because i heard somewhere that he would play DE and NT.
DoomervilRocks92, no, he will only play DE. Fields and Baker and Thomas are the NT.
He is too small for NT. He is only 285.
Oh, I thought he was more like 300. my bad. I wish Baker was higher on the depth chart. He did really well in preseason.
I think we are going to have a great defense this year. WE have a GREAT secondary, good linebackers, and a decent line. We will dominate this year.
Dynamicdave don’t forget the
kick ‘em when thier up
kick ‘em when thier down part….the media does that too. I don’t think it will be hard to remember who bashed the Broncos ’cause that was just about everyone…including Shannon Sharpe. I have seen us ranked between 27 and 30 in power rankings. All I have to say is SSSHHHH! Don’t tell anyone we might be good…then we sneak up on teams and the media and PUNCH ‘EM IN THE MOUTH Bam!!!! As I said in an earlier post
all I have to say about that is get ready to eat your words. This team is going to surprise people. We do have a tough schedule but I promise that we will be better than the Raiders and the Chiefs.
Broncos20: Screw Fabiano. Any one of us could do some research and then give our OPINION. We do it right here. What has he really done ever except write his thoughts….nothing. He’s a joke. I don’t go to him for fantasy advice. We’re gonna win in Cincy!!
GO BRONCOS!!!! South Stands Forever! The Orange Crush Lives!
nice to see real fans in here today i agree on the D and look for hills and gram to open big holes, for whoever runs the ball sun. the run will be key for us this year but D wins championships so lets go broncos … 1 last thing to philly ty for dawkins…
I was reading you guys game predictions here, and the obvious thing is almost no one seems to be thinking we will score more than 20 points. Wow! What a difference a year makes. Last year we had to score nearly 40 points in order to win. I much rather win with 20 or less than having to score 40. Defense is what wins championships and I truly believe we are rebuilding ourselves one eventually. For that reason alone PB made the right choice when he let Shanahan go, and McD made the right choice when he hired Nolan to coach our D. Agressive D is the way to go these days, the game has gotten way to fast for the wait and see approach we used to use on D. However, I’d like to think that our offense can score a few more points than folks are giving us credit for. After all, we have never seen our O in action yet (the pre-season offense is a downsized version of what we’re capable of).
In retrospect, we might be surprised to find out this year that our O will perform much better than expected, and our D wont be quite as good as we think. All that for the simple fact that our O has been good for awhile now but our D has been atrocious for much longer than that. It’ s about the learning curve.
As far as making a pick for the game, even so I have never had such a hard time analizing a game before, considering I know close to nothing about our team in a game situation, I say BRONCOS WIN 24-20. Therefore with the 4&1/2 point spread, the Bengals would be the smart money pick. Just my opinion.
GO——-BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that we can get by not scoring as many points because our D will not allow the other team to score as much. Last season the best defense was a good offense. This season a good defense is a good defense.
After re-reading previous posts, I found just 3 or 4 picks higher than 20 for the Broncos, the highest being 27.
brian, I still think we can make it the best D is a good O.
Even so it will be nice to have some safeties out there for a change, if you know what I mean. Definitely the most improved part of our D before we even play a game.
Point at hand, Barrett was our best S last year, now he is #5 and last on this roster. Also a great improvement, Goodman instead of Bly opposite of Bailey. Only problem I see is Bailey has lost a step and will be the one being thrown more ball at by season’s end than Goodman. But we’re in good shape there with Alphonso Smith as Bailey’s back up. Before year end, my guess is most everyone we’ll be glad we traded our #1 for him.
What about: Bruton is a brute! Pretty catchy, I think. That guy is also a great back up to have for Dawkins, another guy who won’t be good forever. Looking at things, I think depth will be the difference for us this year. You have to go back a ways to find a roster of 53, where anyone cut would be a shame.
Love to talk to myself on these early mornings. LOL. That’s what happens when you’re an old man, up early, in bed by ten.
The 27 would have been my pick, 27-17. As for game management, the O needs to run the clock with long drives. The D needs to 3 and out the Bungles as much as possible. Simple recipe that most teams use. Now it’s time to put it to use and make it work. Or as Larry the Cable Guy says, “git ‘er dun.”
I thought I’d go for the record, 5 posts in a row…ahahahahah.
DDave, you messed up my record, darn.
I disagree. I don’t think it’s fair to say Bailey has lost a step? Too early to say that.
