Record-Setting Day Brings AFC Award

December 15th, 2009 - 4:37pm by Gray Caldwell

Broncos TV

For his record-breaking performance against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 14, Brandon Marshall will be named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week. It is the second time in his career he has earned the award.

His 21 receptions set a new NFL single-game mark, and gave him 86 on the year. Marshall set another NFL record in the game, recording the most 10-plus-catch games — eight — in a player’s first four seasons in NFL history.

He now owns two of the top four single-game receiving totals in league history — he caught 18 passes in last season’s home opener against San Diego. He also earned the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award after that performance.

His 21 catches against the Colts went for 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns, upping his season totals to 1,008 and 9, respectively. This is Marshall’s third consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season.

Marshall’s award represents the fifth time a Broncos player has won the weekly honor this season, joining Champ Bailey, Kyle Orton, Eddie Royal and Matt Prater.

This week, the Oakland Raiders head to INVESCO Field at Mile High. Earlier this season, Marshall caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown against the division rival.

Marsh is a beast I mean how many people though he was gon break this record Again(Franchise Record) when we had Orton

  2. gary bronc says:

Hey but something I really want to talk about is, Tony Scheffler. I feel like we need a balance TE that can run block, pass block, and of course run good routes. When you look at our team right now, we pretty much have our ducks lined in a row because the run game, pass game, pass rush everything is a least solid right now. And i didn’t even mention our explosive special teams. So I feel like the difference is our ability to make those short gains, especially on 3rd downs and Scheffler can provide that relief for us if he can only be a every down TE. I think havin that TE was the difference maker in last weeks lost against the Colts where Dallas Clark had two TD’s.

SO if Scheffler could turn into that type of player than we could really be unstoppable because he definitely has the speed to stretch the field, provide good match ups and make big plays. PLEASE let me know what yall think about that

    GO BRONC’S!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Deify_you says:

I think best thing to do on short yardage situations is line up wide with 4 receivers in a shotgun formations. Then let Orton decide after seeing the defense if he wants to run or throw.

  4. tnalen66 says:

Congats to the beast. Sign the beast. Yet he might not make the pro bowl.

  5. icefire7 says:

Marshall definitely deserves this award and he also deserves to have a new contract. Denver needs to keep this guy as he makes the QB better, regardless of who that is.

  6. broncofan2639 says:

gary bronc: I think Scheffler is already that type of TE but Mcd is to damn blind to see it. We need to get the TE’s more involved in the game plan. Something has to happen, because we seem to have the same game plan every week & defenses already know what we are going to do.

  7. broncofan2639 says:

As far as records &/or awards go. The hell with them unless you win. If you don’t win then they don’t mean a damn thing.

  8. USC#1 says:

Brandon is the beast. And we fed him all day. But, he seems to be the only one that showed up for us. Where were our other receivers? Did I miss something? I agree we need to do something else on those 3rd and 4th and short besides handing it off to KM. Why not a screen? Why didn’t we try with Brandon on those short down yards? Just a thought? I believe he could easily have gone with at least 5 more receptions. The game is over and the good thing is that we play the raiders at home this week. Just wanted to do a shout out to my bronco country from LA. A shout out from the new kid. We should have no problem with the Raiders.

  9. USC#1 says:

A slow night yeah? Oh well. I will have to check in later to see if I’m still the only one on here.

  10. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Congrats again Marshall well deserved.

Baylin, I know you will be on here eventually. Saw the NFL replay of the game…see what u were talking about…cant believe MxcD went for it on 4th down twice with the run, that hasnt worked all year and even worse, wasnt working at all that game period. And to make matters worse…on the two point conversion…he runs again…unbelievable…what is this? lack of trust in your QB?

Speaking of the QB, Orton doesnt scan the field enough, he does a great job of getting rid of the ball but on that one drive with the field goal, i think stokely was open in the endzone and Orton threw it away instead…first time ive ever seen stokely mad lol

  11. Spelling says:

Over the past few weeks I felt impressed with Denver’s ability to share the offensive attack across the receivers and backs. Then Brandon picks up 21 catches the next game.
It’s just a small annoying thing that bothered me about the Indianapolis loss.

And yes, I’m followin’ you, TRB. ^
It seemed to me that Orton didn’t scan the field on some, if not most, of his throws to BMarsh. But whatever. I’m putting my faith in Coach McD and the staff and the team’s executions and decisions.

My above topics aside, congrats to Brandon on the record!

  12. Tyx31 says:

First post gang. How does champ win the AFC player of the week? He must have written a typo

  13. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Let’s go to Scheffler more often. The guy is awesome and if circumstances prove propitious enough for us, he’ll gash the Raiders like a Quincenera pinata!

  14. broncos20 says:

    Tyx31,
I think Champ won the award after the Cowboys game. He alone stopped the last drive..

Lets lock up Marshall please Pat..most teams would die to have a player like him…

  15. Broncofaninkc1 says:

McD is no way a mastermind that Shanny is. How can you take a top three offense last year to a sub par offense this year. We have more talent this year but he is not using them. Royal is having a bad year do to McD and Orton. I don’t know if I have seen Orton throw a strike to Royal on the run all year. He is always diving or reaching for the ball. McD’s play calling is very suspect as well. Throw the damn ball to Scheffler and run Hillis more.

  16. BRONCOBAILEY99 says:

    PAY THE MAN!!

  17. alexanserg says:

I’m a scheffler fan myself, but before howling for him too much remember that he dropped a few crucial passes in the colts game. Pretty sure that he had more drops than receptions, which is never a good thing. But then he didn’t get thrown at much.

  18. alexanserg says:

But I’m with y’all saying we should hurry up about signing BM for an extension. His value is just going up as they wait.

  19. bobcat82 says:

am i one of the few that does not understand if you are going for it on 4th and 1 and the defense has 9 guy’s in the box call a time out or opt out of the play and take a 1 step drop and hit ur recievers let them make a play or better yet fake the run and use a pump fake for a quick double move and go deep indy did that on fourth down to clark, and all I ever here Mcd talk about is a 1 . 2 punch at running back but when buck went down other than 1 series hillis was never back there KM was gassed and on the 4th and 3rd in short down he had no leg drive and I remember when we were close to the goal we would use a full back out of the back field to score or get crucial downs hell even new england used vrabel for just that any how i agree with you all the play calling is suspect and orton is to locked on to a reciever to many weapons not to use them

  20. brian_schneider says:

When Marshall wasn’t getting the ball everyone was complaining. Now he’s getting the ball and everyone is complaining that we’re not using our other weapons. We’re not the Colts and we can’t give everyone 30+ touches like Manning does. Some guys are going to get a lot of touches or looks one game and maybe one or two or none the next. Just the way it is, in a pefect world everyone would get the same amout of looks and touches and whatever. If they ain’t open you can’t force it in there, you do that and you throw ints in the red zone and everyone complains about that. I watched every single one of Marshalls catches, and there were only a few times that Orton kind of forced it in there. But then he throws it incomplete somewhere else and everyone gets mad that he didnt’ throw it to the BEAST. Everyone’s complaining that we dont’ do this or dont’ do that ONLY, ONLY after a loss. If we’d of won not one would be complaining that Scheffler or whoever isn’t getting more involved. I really don’t care who gets the ball as long as we win.

    Go Broncos!!!!

  21. Gonzo777 says:

GO Brandon He is an awesome Player Orton Did Good Also But Brandon Has Class when he gave that ball to the fan with Brandons jersey was an all out terrific so Brandon if you read this Dave says right on man go for 25 catches you Beat T.O and that says alot I know there was controversy but your an all Pro We all Have Skeletons in our Closets So lets not Judge the man Another where is Hillis On those Short Yardage Spots Hillis runs Like a PitBull To RAW Meat But Brandon your the Dawg AfC PLAyer OF the right on

  22. SuperiorBroncoFan says:

I agree with brian…people need to stop complaining about things that we didn’t do or didn’t do well. Look at all the potential we have in all areas of our team. I’m not saying i agree with all of McDainels calls, but he has been doing pretty well all year. At the beginning of the year everybody was saying the Broncos were going to be horrible, fighting for the bottom of the AFC West…look at us now. # 3 overall Defence after last years less than wonderful experience. Our offence is moving the ball…we just need to punch it in when we get into the redzone. But we were down 21-0 to the colts in the second quarter…most teams would have gave up and it would have been a blow out, not us. We held Manning to under 250! Even though we lost, we know that we can beat the best. Have faith people!!! we are 8-5 with winalbe games left. Lets fly under the rader again and take the playoff by storm.
    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  23. broncos504 says:

pay the man now not late !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. killerkod says:

But isn’t that the whole point of the blog? Isn’t this the place to come and give praise when deserved and vent frustrations when our team loses?

If I’m ever being critical, it’s not to be disloyal…..it’s cause I want my team to win and when that doesn’t happen, then I think criticism is warranted. They are a professional team with professional athletes and when they do not perform to the standards that not just we as fans have, but the standards it takes to be a champion in this league, then hell ya, I’m gonna be critical.

I don’t want to be complacent and have the attitude that, “oh, they tried their hardest but darn we didn’t win….maybe next time” The whole objective of a professional team in any sport is to win. People lose their jobs when teams don’t win. Teams lose the interest of bandwagon fans when they don’t win.

I will be a die-hard bronco fan until the day I die…….win or lose, championships or no championships. But that sure as hell doesn’t mean I don’t have the right to come on this blog and state my opinions on both wins and losses, even if it is sometimes negative. We all have the right to be critical of our team and have our own opinions on our team’s performance.

Anyways, just a little rant to get through my humpday here at the office.

Looking forward to watching our boys smash the Faders and get closer to locking down a playoff spot. And if they don’t, I’ll be on here Monday morning being critical! haha

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  25. Deify_you says:

Tom Cable announced 2 hours ago that Charlie Frye would get the start on Sunday.

  26. Samoanbronco says:

Broncofaninkc1 – What you need to realise is that (a) This is McDaniels first year as a HC and Shanny was in his 13th year as HC (Broncos) not to mention his tenure as HC with the Raiders and OC with the SF and DEN. The tutilage he recieved over those years made him the coach he turned out to be. (b) Cutler was a bulk of the reason why we had such a high powered offence. When he was throwing bombs and lasers to Marshall, Royal and the rest of them they were racking up the numbers. In addition to that our running game was appalling.

McDaniels will need time to shape this team up and so far IMO I think he’s off to a great start.

  27. beefdirkus says:

Mc D will have to go deep in the vault to find game tape on Charlie Frye. lol. It is sad that Charlie Frye is a better option than their number 1 pick Jamarcus Russell.
Broncos need to come out with an attitude and not take the Raiders lightly.

Also- it looks like the Broncos will be Cutler fans this weekend. It would be nice to see the Bears beat the Ravens and get a bigger lead in the wildcard race.

  28. florio's_mom says:

    ******BREAKING NEWS*****

JaMarcus Russel WILL start Sunday after he ate Charlie Frye earlier this morning. He thought Charlie Frye was a French Fry.

  29. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Im with you Brian Shneider,

Dunno why some are complaining that he is getting too many catches…Its not like he was thrown to all the time and NEVER CAUGHT IT…he caught it, got yards after the catch and 12 first downs single handedly, he moved the chains single handedly…and if he is the open reciever go to him thats how the pass game works…so he is the open receiver and he is your top receiver = throw him the ball.

Gaff got in on the action too…and when peopel flock brandon Marshall other people get opportunities, just like last year after his 18 catch game in week 2 against SD….he was on lock the rest of the season and thats why royal was torching like crazy. not to mention our QB isnt a gunslinger like Cutler was so we cant have everyoen torching.

my biggest concern was after buckhalter got hurt they made Moreno the every down back…the kid is too young…lets not wareout his knees when we got a bruiser like hillis in the back ground that can take some touches off him to give him fresh legs

  30. Deify_you says:

Yeah we need the Bengals to beat Chargers, Bears to beat Ravens, Titans to beat Dolphins, Falcons to beat Jets, and lastly Colts to beat Jags. Bengals and Chargers is the most important game on Sunday besides our own.

  31. monodono says:

WHO CARES ABOUT AWARDS AND RECORDS WHEN YOU LOSE?

  32. killerkod says:

I don’t care about what the other teams do. I just want our boys to take care of business on their own.

  33. eternalorangeandblue says:

My question is, can someone other than number 15 show up on offense? Where is Eddie Royal, TScheff, BStokes. McDaniels in the pre season never stopped blabbering about how much these guys were going to be a huge part of the offensive attack. Well its week 15 now and they still havnt shown up. whats the problem why cant we get the ball to these guys more often I dont understand. Its not they are just being shut down by opposing Defenses or something.

  34. gary bronc says:

I just feel like Scheffler and Hillis were so explosive last year for us but McD doesn’t realize it. And Royal hasn’t been getting the receptions that he should be getting but maybe it’s a mix of McD’s style and Orton’s inability to be a gunslinger, not that we need that type of guy but he does need to be a little more aggresive. All I’m saying is that we put ourselves in the best position to win when we can effectively use all of our good players even when we’re just putting them in for the threat of a run or pass.

On a side note, I know we’re far from it especially since we’re playoff contenders but I still say we get a QB first round.

  35. 2Bailey4 says:

Gary Bronc, Gotta correct you on one thing, Dallas Clark had 3 TD’s against us last week, but that’s beside the point. EternalOrange&Blue, how can you say that the others have not stepped up? Wasn’t it BStokes last sec catch in week 1 to win us the game, and B Marsh has really only had like 4 great games so far this season. E Royal had that huge game against SD a few weeks back. We won the game because of him. I blame Orton for our other receivers sub par performance this season. It is not B Marsh fault he gets the catches he does. Orton throws him the ball I would rather him catch it and get the stats then drop it and screw the team over. Come on now think about it.

As for the playoffs, all we need is to win at least 2 of the last 3 to get in. We already have the best record of all the Wild Card teams this year. As long as do that we will make the post season and will more than likely play the Bengals or Patriots in the first round. Doesn’t matter what the other teams do. We are in control of our own playoff destiny this year just like last. Only this year we won’t blow it.

If anyone disagrees with me about any part of this please comment me about it. I would love to discuss this with anyone. I bleed Orange & Blue.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. TheRoyalBeast says:

    nobody does monodono,

not even brandon marshall who said he woulda traded some of those catches for a victory

but the fact of the matter is he did break the record, congratulations are in order…sucks that we lost because it is our main focus…but what should we do? punish the man for doing his job well? We give him his kudos and we move on, cant live in the past….Oaklands on the menu and they wont roll over….if we start poorly like we did against IND they could pull off an upset.
